Whether you’re an all-out juicing aficionado, or a beginner looking to find their way into the alluring and trendy world that is juicing; these recipes are tried and true for adding a pep in your step, aiding detoxification, and giving you an ethereal glow. Juicing can seem intimidating, but I am here to tell you to throw your hesitations out the window. Once you start, you’ll be wondering why didn’t become a juice making fiend sooner.

Juicing at home is a wonderful and cost efficient way to feel your best. When you drink a juice, all of the nutrients from the fruits and vegetables are immediately absorbed into your bloodstream because your body doesn’t have to break down the fiber; this means that the beautiful benefits of these nutrients will quickly be reflected in both your energy levels and that healthy glow I was mentioning.

Let me start by breaking down the juice vs. smoothie debate. My stance on this matter is best expressed by a few commonly used phrases: ‘the more the merrier!’, ‘the best of both worlds’, and ‘why can’t we all just get along?’. When I tell people I made a juice, they reprimand me that I won’t get my fiber this way; when I tell people I’m drinking a smoothie, they warn me about the oxidation of nutrients when heated up via blending. You can’t win! Here’s what I think: you should drink both smoothies and juices because they both have amazing health benefits. I love using my cold press juicer for a quick, straight-to-the-bloodstream nutrient boost and an almost immediate sensation of natural energy. I love smoothies for a more filling and fibrous snack or meal replacement- the options are endless.

I don’t do juice cleanses (I’m not knocking them, I just haven’t done one myself yet), but rather I drink juices in addition to eating healthy meals. You can drink these juices as a part of a juice cleanse, or in conjunction with healthy meals for a delicious and detoxifying experience – the choice is all yours.

LA Bite of the Month: Gluten-Free Muffins from Huckleberry

Here's the trouble. Huckleberry cafe is smack dab between my home and office. So each morning it's a conscious choice whether or not I'll stop for bone broth or a cuppa Huckleberry brew and one of these life-alteringly delicious muffins.

This is the kind of recipe that especially excites us to run. These are the foods we're really eating out there in the concrete jungle of L.A. and want the whole world to have access to! Chef Zoe Nathan's gluten-free muffins are the kind of health food we hope the future is made of. They're better than any traditionally made goodies we've ever tried, made with cleaner ingredients, and better for our bodies. 

We're thrilled to have Huckleberry's gluten-free flour mix recipe and their gluten-free muffin recipe. For more of Zoe, check out our shoot at home with her making pancakes here! 

If you like to bake gluten-free, whip up a big batch of this flour mix and keep it on hand. It lasts forever. You can use a store-bought gluten-free flour mix if you must, but your pastry will not taste nearly as good. I cannot stress enough what a difference this mix makes in both flavor and texture. If you don’t like the graininess of the cornmeal, you can always omit it and use a little more of the oat flour or potato starch.

There is nothing I hate more than a gummy pastry. For that reason I don’t like most gluten-free pastries out there, and I find it especially challenging to find a delicious gluten-free and vegan pastry. But once I realized you don’t have to use xanthan gum to make one of those said pastries hold together, I got hooked on the challenge of making this stuff actually taste good. This was the first gluten-free and vegan recipe I made that I really liked. And honestly, sometimes I prefer it to the white flour, butter-heavy devils I usually make.

People always want to know what I'm eating. I talk a lot about cutting sugar and processed carbs and eating real, whole, fresh foods, but everyone wants to know if I walk the walk! The truth is that I have to. I have about ten jobs, two kids, a dog, a team, weeks of travel at a time... the list goes on and on. In order to keep up with this lifestyle, maintaining optimal health becomes a top priority. Here’s a typical day of eating for me...

When I can, I’ll also make some time for movement in the morning. I love to go on long bike rides with my son or start up a game of basketball before a long day, and after I work out, I usually enjoy my whole-food protein shake.

Pilates 101: 9 Essential Reformer Moves For Your Best Body Ever

Core-chiseling,muscle-elongating, body-shaping.... There's nothing quite like a good Pilates routine. And our team is into it for 2016!

Andrea Speir's new Santa Monica studio, Speir Pilates, is the ultimate studio as far as we're concerned. We recently visited Andrea for her reformer-based Pilates class and experienced a killer workout with results we could feel from day one.

A few members of our team recently purchased reformers (see our pick!) to use at home. To make sure we know what we're doing with all of our flying limbs, we plan on hitting up Andrea's gorgeous new studio periodically to stay in good form!  Below Andrea is walking us through the nine essential reformer moves she uses to give her clients the chiseled, elongated Pilates bods the reformer is known to create - in just 30 minutes a session. Here's Andrea on the reformer and how to use it!

The reformer is a bed-like piece of equipment that will help you find your proper posture and safely, efficiently and effectively change the health and look of your body. The Pilates reformer has been used by physical therapist for years for its amazing therapeutic benefits and also by Hollywood elite because of its incredibly chiseling results.

The method of Joseph Pilates is to begin with your body in this basic position, then build and tone it all the way to your standing position so you can walk out of your session proud, tall and strong.

Here are my nine moves recommended for the Chalkboard girls as they embrace those at-home reformers! This combination will provide a balanced and effective workout in 30 minutes or less.

Spring Zing: Shaved Zucchini + Mint Salad With Olive Crumble

We're obsessed with all things spiralized (you may have noticed,) especially fresh zucchini. This farmer's market haul of fresh zucchini and squash was finely julienned by one of our favorite vegan chefs, Meredith Baird, author of Coconut Kitchen, during our Easter cooking class and luncheon with Jenni Kayne. Get all the Easter-ready recipes and gorgeous design details in today's feature here.

Meredith swears that these delicate veggie ribbons make for quick and easy work with a classic mandoline slicer and we're willing to give it a go just to create this unique spring salad. We're also in love with the idea of these cured olive crumbles that lend a perfect, salty punch to the salad and could, no doubt, be added to just about anything. The olives are dried low-and-slow in the oven and pulsed to bits to create this healthy condiment we're sure to find a million uses for!

Rosemary and wine have been partners for centuries. Archaeological evidence suggests that the ancient Egyptians infused wine with rosemary. In Banckes’ Herbal of 1525, the author suggests that rosemary can “keep the wine from all sourness and evill savours.” Also, rosemary has long been associated with memory, from the ancient Greek scholars who wore sprigs of the herb to improve concentration during exams to the early modern English who used it as a symbol of remembrance at weddings and funerals. And it’s not all superstition, either: scientists have found that the smell of rosemary can increase memory by 75 percent. I can’t promise that my Rosemary Wine will boost your memory—but I can tell you it makes a nice little aperitif, and that it’s lovely as part of a white sangria.

The Ultimate Vegan Easter Lunch with Jenni Kayne and Meredith Baird

Easter eats are all about capturing the fresh, magical lightness of the spring season. To prep for the upcoming holiday (and restock our recipe arsenal with some plant-based goodness) we gathered in Jenni Kayne's kitchen for another fun and healthy cooking class.We've co-hosted quite a few ladies lunches with Ms. Kayne, but this time, joined by Meredith Baird - author of our recent cookbook obsession Coconut Kitchen - we found ourselves falling head over heels for just one ingredient: coconuts. Meredith crafted an incredible, healthy lunch based on her plant-based, dairy-free ideals and the star of the show showed up in all it's forms. We're now hooked on coconut bacon, yogurt and rose-infused cream!

Our class and meal started off with a bright and nourishing asparagus soup, followed by gluten-free turmeric tigernut toasts topped with a luscious spring pea puree. A shaved zucchini salad (see the recipe here) provided a pop of raw freshness, and savory spice-roasted carrots were the perfect vessel for - we'll say it again - Meredith's coconut bacon, people. We finished up with a delicate rose and coconut cream dessert that you definitely won't want to miss - watch this space tomorrow.

To compliment the charm and lightness of our meal, the table was dressed with Jenni’s personal white linen napkins and cutlery, gorgeous Materia Lumina ceramic bowls and plates, and this stunning floral centerpiece from Gold Spell Design (I mean.) Tiny homemade egg nests wrangled in the Easter feels, and guests got to take home Meredith's own coconut body balm, which was wrapped in linen and sealed with twine for a touch of crafty elegance.

A Stunning DIY That’ll Take Your Spring Dinners To The Next Level

A pop of color and a brush of texture is sometimes all you need to transform a space from bland to beautiful. No one knows this better than flower-guru, Julie Michaels of Ariella Flowers. Her new book, The Flower Workshop, shares 50 gorgeous DIY flower projects, including hanging arrangements (like these marigold curtains) that add a touch of whimsical sophistication to a gathering, without sucking up valuable surface space! Kick your creativity into full-bloom with this crafty DIY fern chandelier, perfect for adding a touch of earthy elegance to your next gathering.

A playful addition to any party, this chandelier is decorated with plumosa and leatherleaf ferns, inexpensive varieties that can remain out of water for a long time - up to two days - which makes them suitable for this kind of arrangement. Each orchid stem can be set into an individual tube of water, but these flowers will also last for a day or two without drinking. This circular brass chandelier was discovered at a flea market, but since you cover it in ferns, any round structure might do, even two 24- or 30-inch round wire wreath forms wired together for greater depth. This wreath was suspended over the outdoor table using a metal pole fastened to two adjoining buildings, but depending on your location, you may have to use other methods.

Commonly recognized as a bonding hormone new mothers produce, we can thank oxytocin for helping usher in awesome orgasms. Not only has oxytocin been observed to play a role in sexual arousal for women and men, it has also been reported to play a significant role in wound healing by reducing the inflammatory response.

When oxytocin levels are in good shape your self-confidence may be up, or you may find yourself feeling more connected to others.

If you experience food sensitivities and allergies, autoimmune issues or systemic candida (an overgrowth of yeast), poor oxytocin levels could be contributing - and messing with your emotions.

The good news is that certain foods may trigger oxytocin release. Studies even suggest that the scent of certain foods may help its release. The First Five Steps: What to Do if You Have Hypothyroidism

WHETHER YOU HAVE no symptoms whatsoever or struggle with low energy and losing weight, more and more people are dealing with symptoms connected to poor thyroid health and hypothyroidism. This important gland is responsible for regulating our metabolism and energy level, though it's efficiency may silently decline due to poor lifestyle choices. What to do? 

Amie Valpone, author of Eating Clean, overcame hypothyroidism and a slew of other health issues from adrenal fatigue to candida that had negatively impacted her health for years. This month Amie is sharing tips she’s collected on her road to recovery for what to do when one is first diagnosed with one of these debilitating imbalances. Eight years ago I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and was put on Synthroid, a thyroid-regulating drug to help my thyroid function. Hypothyroidism is low thyroid function, which affects close to 20 million Americans. The interesting part about my diagnosis is that I had zero symptoms. I was thin, I was high energy, I had a fast metabolism, etc. Hypothyroidism is known as ‘a silent epidemic’ according to my integrative- and functional-medicine doctors.

Your thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in your neck right below your Adam’s apple. It’s what controls your energy and metabolism. Something you may not realize is that every cell is your body has thyroid hormone receptors, which is why our thyroid has so much power over our health. The reality is that if your thyroid isn’t working well, nothing in your body will work. Sadly, it took me years to figure this out. Our thyroid is complicated and what works for one person, may not work for another. We are all very different. I felt like a guinea pig for 10 years trying to get my thyroid to function normally.

Many of my clients and readers suffer for years without addressing the underlying causes of what’s going on in their body and what is causing their thyroid to underperform. Western medicine’s approach to hypothyroidsm was to give me a drug - but I wasn’t going to spend the rest of my life on a drug. I knew there was a better way and I learned how to get my thyroid (and my entire body) working for me, instead of against me. It took many years to heal after a decade of chronic illness, however, I can say today that my hypothyroidism is healed.

How did I do it? I realized that the thyroid is not always the problem of hypothyroidism. It’s often rooted in a screwed-up immune system, but many doctors do not test for the antibodies that show autoimmune activity in our bodies. That’s where functional medicine comes into play. It’s important to understand the underlying imbalance in your body and what is causing your thyroid to be suppressed. Medication is a Band-Aid approach and it’s not helping solve any problems or helping your body heal. As much as you don’t want to hear that, it’s true. Trust me, eight years ago I wanted a drug and a quick fix. Now, I simply want to heal when my body is imbalanced. I now understand how to keep my immune system working optimally and how to eat right for my thyroid health.

The biggest culprits for thyroid patients? Gluten and soy! Those are the two biggies that can negatively affect your thyroid, which is why they are next on our list.

Remove Gluten and Soy. Gluten is a major cause of Hashimoto’s, which is an autoimmune attack on your thyroid. The molecular composition of our thyroid tissue is very similar to that of gluten, which is what causes the problem in many people. Removing gluten can help relieve many of your unwanted thyroid symptoms. Soy is also a problem with thyroid health. When I cut out dairy, I ate tofu and soy sauce for years and it negatively affected my hormones and thyroid function. My doctors made it very clear to me that soy can disrupt normal thyroid function by not allowing our body to use iodine, which disrupts the conversion from our T4 thyroid hormone to our T3 thyroid hormone. Moreover, the phytoestrogens in soy proteins have been shown to inhibit thyroid peroxidase. Conventional soy is also a top GMO food, which is another reason to avoid it!

Avoid Eating Too Many Raw Goitrogen Veggies. Foods such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, radishes, peanuts, watercress, and Brussels sprouts are delicious, however, it’s important to not eat too many of these veggies in their raw form because they can interfere with your thyroid function. Cooking them is another story; I cook many of these veggies each week in my home, however, as much as I love eating these veggies raw, I have to be careful not to eat too many because it can negatively affect my thyroid.

Eat More Healthy Fat. I cannot stress enough how important healthy fats are for your thyroid and entire endocrine system. Fat feeds your hormones! Many of my female clients fear fat and they end up with endocrine and thyroid problems including hair loss, dry skin, fatigue, loss of libido and more later in life. It’s important to choose healthy fats that are anti-inflammatory such as avocados, almonds, walnuts, extra-virgin olive oil, ground flaxseeds and chia seeds.

Keep Your Gut Healthy. 80% of our immune system is in our gut, so if your gut isn’t in tip-top shape, you’re going to see health issues pop up throughout your life in unexplainable manifestations such as acne, weight gain, arthritis, depression and autoimmune disease. Many people don’t realize there is a huge connection between gut health and symptoms as minor as acne or headaches, but if you think about how much of your immune system is in your gut, then it’s clear to see why the focus on gut health is so important. Work with your functional medicine doctor to determine what strain of probiotics are best for you and how you can increase your good gut flora.

What Happens When You Add That Sugar-Free Packet To Your Coffee?

We visit our favorite coffee shop and order the usual: coffee with almond milk, no sugar. Instead, we reach for two packets of calorie-free sugar substitute. Good choice, right? Think again. In terms of long-term health, it's possible that this small-seeming choice in sweetener comes with side effects.

Zero calorie sweeteners with no sugar may seem like a no-brainer food swap. In fact, switching to calorie and sugar-free sweeteners is a growing trend all over the world. As many of us are aware, sugar itself can lead to some serious health issues as well, from diabetes to obesity and high blood pressure. It’s no wonder many of us are making a switch to these alternatives, but is it the right call?

The Growing Sugar-free Trend

According to the New York Times, 11% of food items on American supermarkets shelves will be labelled as reduced sugar this year. That’s a pretty large number in the grand scheme of things. What hasn’t changed, however, is America’s sweet tooth. This reduction in sugar does not mean these products are becoming any less sweet. In order to cut the calories that come along with table sugar or high fructose corn syrup, some sort of substitution for sweetener must be made.

The demand for artificial sweeteners is growing and they are popping up in everything: diet drinks and sodas, desserts, savory foods and breads, energy bars, gums, sugar-free teas, chocolates, yogurts, creamers - even toothpastes, mouthwash and vitamins.

There are 5 artificial sweeteners approved for consumption - acesulfame, aspartame, neotame, saccharin (which many countries have actually banned,) and sucralose.

Cause for Concern?

If there are questions on the safety of sweeteners, then why then are they on the market at all? As we pointed out in a past article on sucralose, the issue stems from the fact that most artificial sweeteners are tested on lab rats, not humans. Rats are given such high dosages daily that the FDA has deduced we as humans would never consume the same quantities and so would never experience the same symptoms shown in laboratory rats. That being said, the artificial products produced in a lab and meant for humans to consume regularly do cause wide-ranging health issues in these rats and give us, personally, a cause for some concern. The fact of the matter is, we don’t know enough about these artificial sweeteners and their long term effects on the body to rule out any potential issues.

What we do know is that in studies done on lab rats, symptoms experienced include a wide range of issues including shrunken thymus glands, enlarged livers, kidney disorders, cancers and infertility.

The short term studies that have been conducted on humans have shown a much smaller spectrum of symptoms ranging from digestive disturbances, bloating, and weight gain to mood-related symptoms from anxiety, depression and mania. 

Over the years the makers of sweeteners keep track of data from their users. Try This: Easy Roasted Veggies With Pumpkin Seed Pesto

We've been accused of eating like rabbits in the past, but these roasted root veggies are anything but bunny food. Find yourself the freshest, just-pulled-from-the-dirt carrots you can get your hands on and try this simple recipe from Claire Thomas of The Kitchy Kitchen! Add a pop of flavor and the skin and immune boosting properties of zinc with this simple and delicious dish... 

Roasted veggies could be a whole meal for me. The sugars caramelize, the textures becomes tender, the flavors intensify and deepen - perfection. A huge part of cooking is finding balance in flavors, and sometimes that means adding a pop of contrast. With these round, deep flavors, a punctuation of brightness is a welcome addition. Pumpkin-seed pesto is a slight twist on the classic and adds a lovely bright note to this dish. So eat it as a meal, or serve it as a side, either way, it’s one of my favorites for any season.
