Baked Donuts + Vegan Ice Cream: Healthier Dessert Spots From LA To NYC

We don't always indulge in the sweet stuff, but when dessert is called for, we're looking for healthier dessert spots like these gems. From baked donuts to soft serve made of green juice, these treats - and the cute shops that house them - are definitely Chalkboard-approved and provide the perfect way to indulge.

What's the point of a slice of cake or giant cookie if it leaves us feeling totally bleh afterward?

There certainly aren't as many healthy dessert spots as there are traditional ones, but we're grateful they are slowly becoming easier to find. Here are a few of our tried-and-true faves in LA and NYC. Whether you're looking to pick up something to bring along to your next social gathering or a cute spot to cozy up and sink your teeth into something sweet, peek through our favorite healthier dessert spots below...

Los Angeles

Fonuts | Fonuts serves us baked (not fried), often vegan and gluten-free donuts we just can't quit. They're cakey and flavorful, and come in both big and mini sizes (literally, the cutest). The brand's West Hollywood location just relaunched and we couldn't be happier. What's more thrilling than a box of a dozen donuts? Win a box of your own on Instagram today!

Sweet Laurel Bakery | The queen of grain, gluten, dairy and refined sugar-free baking, Laurel Gallucci, has finally opened her first IRL cafe. Sweet Laurel serves the clean, gut-friendly baked goods, we've been loving for years inside the all-pink Palisades cafe - including cake by the slice that you just shouldn't miss. Learn all about what they're serving up here.

Amazebowls | What started out as a food truck slinging the prettiest acai bowls in toen, Amazebowls has evolved into a destination for sweet, fruit-based smoothie bowls. They have two store fronts -- on in DTLA's Art's district and one in Venice. They use high quality, pure ingredients, no dairy an no creepy add ins. They shared a sweet recipe with us a few years back -- check it out here (they're kind of really gorgeous).

Pressed Juicery Freeze | Available in both LA and NYC, Pressed Juicery's Freeze is one of the best clean solutions for sweet tooth cravings we've tried - and apparently people from coast to coast agree. Just the mention of the vegan-friendly soft-serve gives every wellness-lover we know that heart-eyed emoji look. Freeze is made with pure whole food ingredients -- vanilla, for example, only contains almonds, dates, sea salt and little else! Top off your swirl with fresh berries, almond butter and other superfoods for the ultimate sundae that won't leave you feeling sugared out. Discover our team's fave ways to top our Freeze here.

New York

by chloe cookieby CHLOE | by CHLOE is a plant-based vegan restaurant chain that originated in New York (although there's now one on the eastside of LA too!). Their claim to fame is creating delicious, accessible vegan dishes and desserts that don't feel, well, vegan. If you're looking for a cupcake, cinnamon roll or chunk of coffee cake that doesn't contain dairy or eggs -- and doesn't turn-off more traditional sweettooths -- by CHLOE is the place to go. Their giant chocolate chip cookie is one of IG's faves.

hu kitchen cookie sandwichHu Kitchen | We've been in love with Hu Kitchen's paleo, vegan-friendly natural chocolate bars since our first bite -- they're some of the best on the market. Hu Kitchen's brick and mortar in NYC features a beverage bar, bakery, marketplace, hot foods bar and their glorious 'mashbar' which allows you to make epic natural food sundaes with bases like chia pudding, taro pudding and cashew cream! Clean, thoughtfully sourced ingredients are #1 priority.

Erin McKenna Bakery |
In the same vein as our beloved Sweet Laurel above, Erin Mckenna's bakery (formerly Babycakes NYC) is the local go-to for healthier desserts. Everything on her menu of clean donuts, cookies and cakes has us drooling from the Left Coast -- and is grain, gluten, egg, dairy and refined sugar-free (as well as kosher).

matcha soft serveCha Cha Matcha | While you'll find plenty of not-so-healthy treats at this cute NYC spot, you'll find a few superfood gems as well. We love their coconut matcha power bowls topped with fresh seasonal fruit, and their coconut milk matcha latte for a  little boost that's perfect for when you need a hit of sweetness but don't necessarily want to scarf down another dessert.

How to Make Stuffed Dates: 3 Ways To Make The Clean Raw Treat

The sexiest desserts are also the simplest to make. No, it's not an oozy lava or layer cake, one of our all-time favorites when it comes to chic treats are stuffed dates.

These super healthy, raw and modern munchies are the ultimate afternoon pick-me-up or healthy sweet party food. They're bite-sized and basic in the best way -- making them only requires a couple of ingredients you might already have on hand. Best of all, they're all-natural, packed with essential nutrients, and without a stitch of refined-sugar in sight.

We were recently reminded of our love for stuffed dates from Christine Tusher, the healthy lifestyle blogger behind Culture Kitty. Then we fall upon the photo up top from The First Mess and all bets were off. Below, we're sharing three easy ideas that will help you make stuffed dates at home right away!

Bourbon Vanilla + Coconut yogurt | Tusher's recipe (above) involves stuffing the pitted date with one heaping teaspoon of coconut yogurt (she uses Living Cultures Superfood's Bourbon Vanilla coconut yogurt) and topping with Altereco Seeds + Salt Dark Chocolate Coconut Bites. The Altereco bites are one of our faves!

Hemp seeds + Cashew Cream |This stuffed date recipe (here and shown below) comes from one of our holiday cooking classes with Jenni Kayne. The texture of raw cashew cream, crunchy hemp seeds, a bit of pepper and the dates themselves is to die for and worthy of any holiday party spread -- or just a dreamy afternoon snack.

Cashew butter + dark Chocolate | Nut butter is the quickest and simplest way to stuff a date. Another version from Tusher, slice a dried date in half and remove the pit. Fill with a tesapoon of cashew butter and top with Altereco Super Blackout dark chocolate.

What are your simple hacks for treats that nourish?

Crystal of The Month: Pyrite To Manifest Intention + Attract Abundance

It seems like a lifetime ago that we were in bathing suits rolling around on the beach under the summer sun. We're back full-swing into making plans and getting things done. As life speeds up, we're welcoming any extra positive reminders to motivate our hard work and ambition. Pretty pyrite is the perfect addition to your desk space.

Pyrite's vibrant and protective energy is just right for our seasonal mood, and its pretty gold-like look makes it a luxe gift that's infused with meaning. Pro crystal healer and founder of Energy Muse, Heather Askinose, is breaking it down for our Crystal Of The Month series...

What you should know: Though the nickname for this stone is fool’s gold, this crystal will have you feeling anything but foolish. Pyrite’s reflective quality has long been thought to reflect negative energy back to those who send it, as it's stone of truth and protection. That’s why ancient civilizations often wore it as a protective shield. The high-quality forms of the stone that mostly come from Spain are especially prized — they are known to develop into perfect cubes atop a matrix.

pyrite crystalHow It Heals: Pyrite is mostly thought of as a stone of abundance, but it does much more. The way pyrite guides you to attract more wealth and prosperity in your life is through encouraging introspection. Pyrite mirrors back to you things that you may have been trying to ignore. But this confrontation helps you to challenge your own negative tendencies. Through doing so, you can create new habits that are more in line with what you are trying to manifest.

Pyrite helps you to break through self-limiting behaviors and beliefs so that you radiate vibrant golden energy. When you put out an abundant energy, you attract that energy back to you. Working with pyrite stimulates a cycle of positive returns. It starts with encouraging positive thoughts, which turn into positive actions, which bring in opportunities and inspire more positive thoughts. The additional protective qualities of the pyrite will reflect away negative energy; your transformation will continue to see increasingly positive results.

Where to Keep It: Keep pyrite on your desk. It will inspire you to stay focused on the golden horizons that lie ahead. If your work feels stagnant or like it lacks risks, just being able to look down at that reminder of the abundance within you can usher in the inspiration you need to challenge old habits.

How to Use It: If you’re looking to attract more prosperity in your work or business, then you’ll want to use pyrite. To manifest your intention, write it on the back of a business card. Then set the card on your desk face up, placing a small pyrite stone on top of it. For those who are looking to spark a wealth of vibrancy into every area of their lives, I’d recommend wearing a pyrite on the right wrist — your energetic output on is on the right side of your body. It’s through the right side that you spread your energy out into the world. By wearing pyrite on your right wrist, you can exude the energy of abundance. I always say: Put out the energy that you want to bring in.

The Hormone Facial: How To Manage Skincare Throughout Your Cycle

Did you bad skin day turn into a bad skin week, despite your attempts to keep your complexion calm and contained? Hormonal fluctuations might be at the heart of it. We asked LA-based holistic aesthetician, Hayley Wood aka Therapeutic Skin Coach, to talk to us about how to manage skincare when our hormonal cycles are wreaking havoc. From understanding the four major phases our bodies experience each month to ultra-soothing products to get you back to a balanced state...

There are many phrases in both the skincare and beauty industry that we’ve heard over and over again — phrases and ideas that we are conditioned to believe. Even to the point that we may not realize a trend's true meaning. The most popular phrase that comes to mind? Anti-aging. So, are we meant to age backward? Or not age at all? And the problem is that holistic facialists like myself need to continuously re-educate clients on proper definitions.

Are hormones and skin connected?

One of the most common conversations I have with new clients is about hormonal cycles. Most often it's how to detach misconceptions around the phrase hormonal skin condition. Think about it: We are all hormonal. We all have a hormonal reproductive system and an endocrine system. An ever-changing environment, daily product use and irregular food consumption may all lead to constant hormonal fluctuation.

However, blanketing all skin conditions with the term hormonal feels a little misleading. The majority of us are not connected with the true functions in our systems. Thus doing so can also be dismissive of the real messaging our skin is communicating with us — especially when experiencing a skin imbalance. Our skin is extremely responsive to our hormones. It is the first to reflect a hormonal imbalance and the happiest when hormones are in balance.

How does my hormone cycle affect skin health?

I want to talk about how I teach my female clients to better understand their hormone cycle and how it correlates to skin health. This mindful teaching is not one that I’ve always felt eloquent in. But since I began skincare work in 2006, it's one that I’ve been forced to pay attention to. There is a huge gap in our general knowledge on how to become more in-tune with monthly cycles.

Many clients experience conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis, infertility and irregular periods, so it became clear to me that the least I can do is help women understand the skin’s response to imbalance. It isn’t punishment for being a woman, but rather an important communication tool indicating how to support overall health.

My collaboration with Sonäge Skincare and their Fertility Facial is so much more than just a trendy new facial. It is an opportunity for women to better understand their cycles while finding harmony with their hormones. The Sonäge Fertility Facial emphasizes the importance of preventative measures to maintain a strengthened immunity. I don't want your skin working overtime. I want to see self-care, rest, mindful nutrition, stress-management, self-compassion and choosing ingredients that are safe for long-term health.

It’s important to acknowledge that we are constantly evolving. Our bodies naturally experience slight daily shifts during our 28-31 day hormone cycle. And, we also shift seasonally as the environment changes. Eventually, our cells renew completely every seven or so years. Hence, nothing is permanent. This can feel like a relief when your immunity, or even your self-esteem, lowers. This is good news! There is always an opportunity to start implementing new holistic health habits so that your future self can enjoy the long-term benefits.

Tell me more about my hormone cycle...In order to break down the basics of our menstrual cycle, it’s important to look at the four phases we have and the importance of each one.

The follicular phase starts on the first day of menstruation (yes, you’re in two of your phases at once for at least four to five days). During this phase, the pituitary gland communicates to specific hormones to start producing egg cells in the ovaries again. The follicular phase is often 13 days long and rebuilds energy levels after shedding the uterine lining. For the most part, women don’t seem to experience too much of a fluctuation in their skin during this time unless they are incredibly depleted in certain vitamins and minerals, or have not been experiencing a lot of PMS symptoms caused by excess stress.

This is often the result of excess cortisol, adrenal fatigue and/or even thyroid imbalance if stress isn’t managed daily. The results of these imbalances also have a more lasting effect on the skin, which may be classified as a hormonal imbalance. But skin is often not fixed solely with birth control or topical care. This work is a little deeper to dive into, but once it’s addressed, the skin does a great job responding accordingly. Typically, the follicular phase is one in which we start to feel better and more energized, so our skin reflects this shift beautifully.

The number one takeaway of this stage is to help the skin feel supported. We can do this by adding vitamin-rich and hydrating ingredients that encourage the skin’s natural ability to regenerate. I suggest the Sonage High Impact Vitamin C serum, Laurel Whole Plant Organics Antioxidant Serum or Odacite’s Blueberry Jasmine Serum. Over-treating skin with harsh actives (such as AHAs and retinol) could deplete your skin more. In other words, think about feeding your skin instead of stripping it.

The ovulation phase starts once your menstrual and follicular phases are over. This is often the fourteenth day of your cycle. The now mature egg cell is prepared to be released from the ovary to the fallopian tube. Once the pituitary gland communicates this function, the body will secrete the hormone needed for ovulation. This is also the opportunity to conceive or the signal to avoid intercourse. Most standard birth control pills are created to trick the body into skipping this step to prevent pregnancy. At this time the body tends to peak in hormone levels, as well temperature, which can be associated with breakouts during the next phase of our cycle.

On a skin level, the reason you may experience imbalance is because of actions taken in this stage — eating non-supportive foods, overextending without proper stress management, ignoring the overall body temperature or little-to-no rest/reset time. All of these habits can trigger overcompensation by our skin for detoxification. It will work on one or more of its primary functions as a filter to shed excess waste, a barrier to protect from environmental triggers and regulation of body temperature. The skin will start to feel stressed when working on all of these functions at once.

The ovulation phase is not always when we can physically see an imbalance, but it is the perfect time to set yourself up for skin success. Take preventative action to avoid skin stress. Add a gentle, calming mask to your routine that will balance the primary functions of your skin. I recommend the Sonage Tulsi Soothing Tri Clay Mask or the MV Skincare Signature Mineral Mask. Or, if you tend to become excessively oily and are prone to congestion, the Sonage Pom Crush Detox Mask is a great way to naturally break down the excess build-up so your skin doesn’t overdo it.

The luteal phase starts right after ovulation and is typically when many feel the most intense skin shift. Hormone levels peak and immediately drop to help prepare the shedding of the uterine lining if conception didn’t take place. Along with monitoring overall nutrition to make sure the body feels supported during this stage, it is also a time when brain activity can feel sluggish. The need for an afternoon nap may feel exceptionally strong.

Because we don’t live in a culture where our schedules are designed to optimize time and focus per phase of our menstrual cycle, it can feel like we are all overcompensating. We opt for the quick fix to help us stay alert and present. This can mean more caffeine or an increase in stimulating foods. If the body is feeling slow or sluggish, this can mean that our overall system needs more rest.

The best piece of advice I give my clients is to try to get more rest. Otherwise skin cells may deplete from their overall radiance. Go to bed early. Avoid excess blue light which can trigger hyperpigmentation. If our hormones are not supported (since all of our cells have different circadian rhythms) when we’re pushing ourselves too much, add hydration to your cells. This can help your overall appearance and energy. I recommend Sonage NMF hyaluronic serum, Osea Malibu’s Hyaluronic Sea serum or a fatty acid rich product like the De Mamiel Pregnancy Oil. These could be the perfect addition to your daily routine to rejuvenate tired skin.

What can I do during menstruation to support skin health?

During menstruation, it’s really valuable to simplify your care and allow your skin to do what it does best: self heal. I suggest a simple rinse solution like the Josh Rosebrook Hydrating Accelerator (which is rich in aloe, healing herbs and natural astringents like lavender and witch hazel). It will help balance the skin during menstruation. Using this product indicates to the skin that you trust its functions and gives it the space to reset.

What is most important during all the cycle phases is to make sure you are connecting your whole body. The primary reason we experience skin imbalance directly connects to a blockage in the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is essential for eliminating excess dermal waste and stagnant proteins in the skin. If this system is blocked due to stress, tension or a lowered immunity in our body, it will cause build-up or blockages on the skin. This will present in the form of breakouts, wrinkles, inflammation or even hyperpigmentation. A good practice of at-home gua sha and overall lymphatic system support (like a rebounder routine and/or dry brushing) will make a big difference for glowing and vibrant skin throughout each phase of your cycle.

What about holistic skin and cycle care?

So many of my clients love the concept of cycle syncing skincare, but they’re often discouraged if they experience irregular or absent cycles. This is when I encourage outside resources to support an individual’s case. As frustrating as a blemished face can feel, it’s often the last of your worries if hormones are needing deeper support. Connecting with an acupuncturist, naturopath and/or a holistic nutritionist can help nourish areas of your system that need the most support. A holistic esthetician can encourage the lymphatic system to eliminate excess waste. This will all help the skin come back to its optimal potential for radiance.

Once you feel supported and begin to recognize your cycle phases, as well as how it often fluctuates, you should feel empowered to navigate some of the most intense and beautiful hormonal transitions in life, such as pregnancy and post-natal. This is also why conscious skincare companies, like Sonage Skincare, have created pregnancy safe and immunity supporting facials to help you feel encouraged during this process.

At the end of the day, all your skin is doing is evolving with you throughout the cycles and seasons of life. An appreciation of how your skin communicates with you will help you navigate all those changes through the lens of love. Choose the right self-care routine to best support you.

Scary Stuff: Why You Should Avoid Endocrine Disruptors At All Costs

Hormonal imbalance is at the root of so many modern health issues. And hormonal health isn't an easy thing to decode; nor is knowing when and where you're getting thrown off balance. Endocrine disruptors are present in everything from beauty products to packaging -- but prying them out of your life is simpler than it seems.

We recently met the amazing Jasmine Scalesciani, the super-holistic founder of Olio Maestro and Hairprint. The Italian-born founder has always been a fan of botanicals as a way to heal, and her line of deeply detoxifying teas and oils -- and restorative non-toxic hair treatments -- had us thoroughly impressed. Her deep knowledge of healthy detoxification is the real deal. Below, she's sharing all about endocrine disruptors: what they are, where they hide, and why it's crucial to avoid exposure...

Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that can interfere with endocrine (or hormone) systems at certain doses. These disruptions can cause cancerous tumors, birth defects, and other developmental disorders. Any system in the body controlled by hormones can be derailed by hormone disruptors.

Endocrine disruptors are literally everywhere; ubiquitous to modern living. That receipt you touched as you thanked the cashier at the grocery store? That probably contains an endocrine disruptor. The pretty body wash you love lathering with? Endocrine disruptor. The new car seat? That probably contains an endocrine disruptor too. And the water bottle you just drank from? Yup. Endocrine disruptor.

What’s a girl to do? Let’s look at what these buggers are, where they are found and what we can do about them Endocrine System 101

The endocrine system is the collection of glands that release hormones that regulate metabolism, regulate our growth and development, tissue functions, sexual function, our reproductive system, and also our sleep, mood, among many other things. Once released, the hormones act like mini-chemical messengers. They travel around the body, hook-up to target receptors of specific cells, and just like that, produce cellular changes we can often feel.

The glands that make up the endocrine system are:the pituitary gland, the thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries and testicles.

The endocrine system is powerful in that it affects almost every organ and cell in the body. Every gland in the system secretes distinctive hormones for singular purposes. The thyroid hormone for example impacts a host of vital body functions such as skin and lymph detoxification, metabolism and weight, temperature regulation, fertility and digestion.

Let’s Look At Where These Endocrine Disruptive Compounds Are Commonly Found And Why We Should Try To Avoid Them:

ED’s in our environment are harmful because they can mimic hormones, our own hormones, and sneakily bind to our own receptor sites and elicit blown up responses. Stronger responses to those we would naturally have.

Some of these over-blown responses might look like:Triggers in inflammation, altering metabolism, stimulating obesity and stubborn fat storage, signaling glucose uptake, increasing or decreasing appetite, oxidative stress i.e. faster aging

As I used to tell my clients in my nutrition practice, it’s not so much that any one dose of ED exposure will negative affect you (the body is resilient after all), it’s more likely that the potential “cocktail effect” of dozens of compounds that the body is subjected to day in and day out, is what disrupts your body’s proper function over time.

12 Most Common Endocrine Disruptors

With industrialization, more chemicals are produced. These chemicals make their way into the environment. As a result EDs are:

PCBs - Found in pesticides.
Dioxins - Found in meat and tampons. Learn More
UV Filters - Found in sunscreens and cosmetics.
Triclosan - Found in personal care products and anti-microbial products. Learn More
Perchlorate - Found in by-product of aerospace, weapon, and pharmaceutical industries. Also found in drinking water and fireworks.
Parabens - Found in a very wide range of products. Often in deodorants. In clothes in polyester fabrics. Learn More
BHA and BHT - Found in foods and gum as preservative. Learn More
Pesticides - Found in food, water, soil and air.
BPA (bisphenol A) - Found in plastics, food packaging, the lining of many food/beverage containers.
Flame retardants – Found in plastics, paint, furniture, electronics, and food.
Perfluorinated chemicals - Found in some food packaging, in non-stick coating of cookware. Learn More
Phthalates - Found in plastics, food packaging, cosmetics, cleaning agents. If a product has the word “fragrance” or “parfum” it probably has phthalates. Learn More

With the wide variety of EDs coming into our lungs, skin, and organs, effects might be cumulative and hard to isolate.

So What Can We Do?

8 Ways To Self Soothe When Your Anxiety Is Out of Control

You can't heal in the same environment that made you sick -- the same goes for our headspace. In order to grow, you have to change, and that often starts with building up a toolbox of soothing and supportive resources. When you're anxious, the last thing you want someone to tell you is to calm down, but it's exactly what needs to happen.

As the nature of anxiety tends to be future-oriented, the best way to quell it is to bring yourself back to the here an now. But when you're on the brink of a panic attack or just can't get out of your head, it's essential to have a few self-soothing tools in your back pocket. Managing your own anxiety needs a holistic approach combined with other modalities such as talk therapy, balanced nutrition and active attempts to reduce daily stress. The tips ahead are perfect for when you need an instant fix so you can figure out what's really going on.

Think of these as emotional supplements -- they're not going to cure everything but they are going to work in a gentle but effective manner to get you out of your own way so you can get to the heart of healing your anxiety. Whether you're constantly quelling feelings of anxiety, just have the occasional bout, or are just really sensitive and need to learn how to self-soothe, these actionable techniques will help you manage anxiety now and later down the line...

8 Ways To Self-Soothe

Breathwork | Inhale slowly for 4 seconds, hold for 7, exhale for 8, repeat 10 times. One of our favorite ways to do this is by laying down on your back. Place your hands over your belly (skin to skin) and breathe into them -- so much so that your hands rise as your belly does. Have your knees bent and knocked together. Consciously focus on the bottom of your feet. Breathwork pro, Ashley Neese showed us this technique to help us feel grounded down in a second.

Gentle yoga | You don't have to go into a class, you can take one at home from online studios like Gaia. Focus mostly on your breathing, and just go through the poses. Be in your body. This will bring you out of your head and make you feel more grounded.

Gratitude journaling | Write a list of things you're thankful for. It's nearly impossible to remain overwhelmed by anxiety when you're filling up with grateful feelings. Write down 5 things you're grateful for and why. You could even tape it to a mirror or something to remind yourself. Write a new list tomorrow -- suddenly you have a whole inventory of things that deserve more of your attention than anxiety.

Grounding | There's a practice called 'grounding' which, for those who are unfamiliar, is literally just walking in nature barefoot. Put your phone on silent and find somewhere to be in nature, even if it's just a local park or something low key, and focus on finding something beautiful. It's a thing.

Read out loud | This is a great way to manage anxiety in the moment. It brings you fully into the present and fills your brain with words and sounds and activity that isn't related to your anxiety.

Body scan meditation | Find one on YouTube or use a meditation app on your phone -- here are a few of our team's faves. You could do this first as kind of a grounding appetizer before doing something else from this list.

5,4,3,2,1 | There's a grounding/ journaling technique called 5,4,3,2,1 that's really good at bribing you into the present. Here's how to do it:

+ Write down 5 things you can see (look around the room or out the window)
+ Write down 4 things you can feel (the softness of your skin, the itchiness of your sweater, the smoothness of a chair etc)
+Write 3 things you can hear (traffic, birds whatever)
+Write 2 things you can smell
+Write 1 good thing about yourself. Take a deep breath and read over your answers.

Get Smart With Supplements | Get some nervous system-soothing adaptogens like reishi or pure full-spectrum hemp CBD and take it daily to soften your stress response and reduce cortisol, the stress hormone. Learn more about which (functional medicine doctor-approved) natural supplements are the best at helping to manage anxiety here.

Here’s How To Make Super-Hydrating Omega-Rich Flax Tea

Last year when we invited Jasmine Hemsley to co-host one of our fave beauty events, we nabbed a sneak peek at her brand new Ayurvedic cookbook -- which finally launched in the States last month! Jasmine and her sister Melissa have paved the way for wellness to blossom into mainstream culture in the UK. Their healthy blogs, cookbooks and cafe support the idea that cooking should be fun, ingredients should be whole, and that the food we eat should make you feel good.

Jasmine is a pro when it comes to integrating Ayurvedic principles into daily life. The Ayurvedic philosophy is an adaptive one, but it can seem totally foreign and overwhelming to someone who doesn't have a foundation. Jasmine's book gives a well-rounded education in addition to recipes from soups to salmon dinner to this simple yet highly-functional flax tea...

Normally we hear about flaxseeds because they are packed full of omega-3 essential fats; not so well known is that flax tea is also therapeutic and very hydrating. Water around our cells is like oil in an engine; without it, they can’t function properly. Even if you have a great diet, your body can’t take advantage of it if you are dehydrated. The answer is to drink more, but if you are stressed your body can be like a badly watered hanging basket. The water just goes straight through, hardly touching the sides! Flax tea helps because it is slightly gelatinous — this soothes and relaxes the colon, and allows it to absorb more water.

Enso Is A Pretty Pice of Tech That’s Helping Us Share Love

When someone you love is far away -- be it a best friend, a lover or a parent -- it's the little things that matter most. Whether it's with a long distance relationship or with someone you lose, the simple act of sharing your heartbeat can create a profound sense of connection. A tiny new piece of tech, Enso heartbeat recorder, is making it possible.

Most of us experience our heartbeats when we're running or when we're anxious. Really tapping into and listening to the rhythm of our own heart when it's in a calm state is such an intimate and grounding way to feel connected to our selves or to others. What was originally designed as a meditative tool to enhance self-connection, Enso has evolved into a way to share a sense of love and connection to the people around you, or those far away, and carry them with you. Nicole Richie recently called it "The most incredible creation that has ever existed" -- we won't argue.

What is it? Enso is a simple and elegant device made with natural materials that can measure your heartbeat, and pulses with subtle feedback to the beat of your heart. You can feel your own heartbeat -- an intimately soothing experience much like that of meditating -- or you can record it and give it to a loved one, wherever they are. Save the heartbeat of someone you love, or share your heartbeat in real time via the app.

Where did it come from? The idea came to founder Rebecca Goldman after she had a profound experience connecting to her own heartbeat during meditation: "I was sitting there meditating and I really felt my heartbeat as this reminder that I was present; I exist, I matter. Up to that point in my life, I really lived mostly in my head and wasn't really connected to my body and this whole kind of integrated thing that we all are. Paying attention to my own heartbeat brought me back to this recognition that I need to take care of myself and of my heart."

How does it work? The Enso heartbeat device has a sensor at the bottom that reads the pulse of your palms -- a similar technology to the Apple Watch. As you hold it in your hand, it senses your heartbeat in real time and it pulses with your heartbeat in real time. At the same time, the light will grow and change colors based on your heart rate. The lights also guide you to breathe at your own calming rate. It creates an instantaneous connection back to your heart; and back to your body. It connects to an app that allows you to store the heartbeat of anyone who holds it and play it back any time.

Where can you buy it? Enso is available here.

Creepy Or Nah: What’s The Deal With Human Probiotics?

No humans were harmed in the making of human probiotics. The concept may sound creepy to the uninitiated, but a human-sourced probiotic is the most natural kind of superfood with benefits that outlast plant or dairy-derived strains.

The term "human probiotics" landed on many of our radars for the first time when The Coconut Cult did. The LA-based vegan yogurt brand, which is available in high-end health food stores up and down the coast, has established a cult-level following amongst the in-the-know wellness crowd. Their dairy-free yogurt is made from fermented coconut, and acts more like a supplement than a breakfast staple -- it's super-powered by 800 billion highly active probiotics that The Coconut Cult ferments into every quart, including 15 strains of human probiotics.

We chatted with Coconut Cult's founder all about the brand in this fascinating Facebook Live. There are many different categories of probiotics; there are the more traditional dairy or plant strains but then there are also human probiotics -- a more evolved bacteria strain that is more adapted to our immune systems and designed to stay in our system longer. In a good way.

What are human probiotics? According to The Coconut Cult, "human strain probiotics are derived from the human gut. But the original culture was acquired 30 years ago, and the strains have been purified in labs so that they are completely safe, carrying no harmful residue as just the strains themselves have survived. We use the best available super probiotics in our coconut yogurts".

How Are They Different? Dairy probiotics are good and soothing, but your body doesn't know what to do with that bacteria because it doesn't naturally grow in the body. It's meant for the cow. It's good for you and it benefits in your body but it's not meant to stay around. Human probiotics, when they're eaten by a human colonate, create little colonies of good gut flora and stick around. This affects overall well being - the immune system, skin, energy levels and hormones.

What Are the Benefits? In addition to offering all the expected benefits of probiotics -- gut health, digestion, immunity, inflammation, and recovery from eating something you're allergic to -- human probiotics have a long-term impact. So...what do you think about human-sourced probiotics — would you or wouldn't you?

Try This Simple + Delicious Yoga Flow Sequence At Home

A little yoga can go a long way. We love this simple yoga flow sequence from Aussie-born plant-based yoga and health coach, Claire Grieve, who thinks that yoga should be - above all - fun!

These playful poses will give your muscles a delicious stretch, send oxygen and energy coursing throughout your body, and maybe even yield a lit-from-within glow. Not everyone has time to drop into a studio every week, but that shouldn't stop you from building up your personal yoga practice at home. Clear a space, light up some palo santo, and give yourself the treat of this sweet, flowing sequence...

This sequence will get your heart pumping and the oxygen flowing. It will help you bring a new vitality to your day. I like to start my morning with an energizing yoga flow to get my day started on a high note. You can also use this flow as a midday pick-me-up. Refresh with a green juice after your flow, and you will have pure, vibrant energy that will surpass that from a cup of coffee.

As you move through the poses, be sure to focus on maintaining deep, rhythmic inhalations and exhalations to receive the full benefits of this yoga flow sequence.

Dolphin Pose

Yoga Flow sequence dolphin pose

This pose energizes the body by circulating fresh blood to the head and heart.

How to: Starting on your hands and knees, bring your forearms to the ground and your shoulders directly over your elbows and hands. Face your fingers forwards. Tuck your toes and lift your hips and belly towards the sky. Relax your head and neck.

Knee To Nose

Yoga Flow sequence knee to nose pose

This pose has all of the strengthening benefits of a plank pose and also digs deeper into your abdomen, helping to tone muscles that you may not be hitting when you do crunches.

How to: Starting from a Downward Dog Split, shift your shoulders over your wrists and draw your knee into your nose. Try to kiss your knee — this motion will activate your core.

Crescent Lunge

Yoga Flow sequence crescent pose

This pose can help you strengthen your lower body (quadriceps, glutes) while lengthening your hip and spine muscles. As you sit deeper into the pose, lift your arms, lengthening them up to the ceiling and beyond.

How to: Begin in Downward Facing Dog. Step you right foot between your hands with your knee aligned over the ankle at 90 degrees. Your back leg will be strong and straight, your hips will be square. Inhale raising your torso and sweeping your arms up to the sky. Relax your shoulders, tuck your tailbone and engage your core to balance.

Crescent Lunge With A Twist

Yoga Flow sequence crescent lunge with twist pose

Adding a twist to your lunge is like giving your internal organs a mini massage. This move can help stimulate your systems, adding a detoxifying quality to the pose. Twists also help to lengthen and strengthen the muscles along your spine.

How to: Starting from Crescent Lunge, place your hands in prayer at heart center and gently twist the torso open towards the right leg. Hook your left elbow over your right knee, using it as lever to open your torso. To take the twist deeper, reach your right arm towards the sky, gazing up towards your fingertips. Hold this pose for five breaths. Repeat this pose equally on both sides.

Warrior Three

Yoga Flow sequence warrior three pose

This is the ultimate lengthening pose. In order to balance in this challenging pose, you must extend throughout your entire body, especially in the muscles that extend along your spine. This movement helps to clear energy blockages and opens up the body for a flow of revitalized energy.

How to: Square your hips and start in Crescent Lunge. Engage the core as you begin to lean forward. Keep extending your arms parallel and actively reach as you lift your back leg. Flex your foot as if pressing into an imaginary wall. Extend through your whole body and keep your gaze a few feet in front of you. Remember to breathe. Hold this pose for 30 seconds.

Crow Pose

Yoga Flow sequence crow pose

Practicing crow pose is an effective way to tone your upper arm muscles and core. Holding this pose for up to 60 seconds can help you tone your trapezius, deltoids, triceps, biceps and more. Plus, in order to balance you really need to engage your abs.

How to: Bend your knees and lower down into a squat. Place your hands on the ground, shoulder width apart with your fingers spread wide. Keeping your feet close together, place your knees on your upper arms. Keep your gaze forward as you activate your core and begin to lean forward lifting one foot at a time toward your buttocks. Touch your toes together, draw your belly in, breathe and hold for 30 - 60 seconds.

Goddess Squat

Yoga Flow sequence goddess pose

This is a fiery, strengthening pose that energizes the whole body. It promotes balance, concentration and focus while lengthening the spine. It also stimulates oxygen and blood flow to increase vitality.

How to: Start in Mountain Pose. Step your feet wide and point your toes to the corner of your mat. As you exhale, bend your knees over your toes coming into a squat. Your thighs should be parallel to the floor. Extend your arms to the side. Your elbows will be in line with your shoulders, palms facing out at a 90 degree angle. Tuck your tailbone and engage your core. Hold this pose for 10 breaths.

Chair Pose

Yoga Flow sequence chair pose

This is an amazing pose for strength and energy. Your feet are grounded firmly into the earth, but you are energetically reaching through your hands. By lengthening your upper body and opening up your chest and heart, you can tone your triceps, deltoids, abs, spine muscles, glutes, hamstrings and lower legs.

How to: Inhale and raise your arms up to the sky, allowing your shoulders to relax away from your ears. As you exhale, start to bend your knees and lower your hips down as if you are sitting in a chair. Sit down even lower, shift your weight into your heels as you lengthen your lower back. Lift up through your heart. Hold for up to one minute.

Boat Pose

Yoga Flow sequence boast pose

Strengthening your core is the most important component of lengthening your muscles. If your core is strong, it allows you to lengthen your limbs making them appear longer and leaner. Boat pose is a great posture to use as an instant pick-me-up!

How to: Begin seated, feet and hands on the floor. Inhale, on the exhale, activate your core lifting your legs up into a 45 degree angle and extend your arms straight out in front of you. Balance on your sit bones keeping your spine straight and your chest lifted. Hold for 10 breaths and release.

Bow Pose

Yoga Flow sequence bow pose

This pose will open up the entire front body, increase back flexibility and stimulate your internal organs. This encourages new energy to move throughout the body.

How to: Lie flat on your stomach. Grab the outsides of your ankle and kick them away from your body. Your chest will lift off the ground like the bow in a bow and arrow.

In My Skin: UNPACKING THE POTENT PRACTICE OF EMBODIMENT MEDITATION

What is embodiment? We came across this mindfulness concept through the wise and magical aesthetician-slash-healer, Sadie Adams, founder of celeb-adored Take Care Mind + Body. Essentially, embodiment meditation is an internally generated performance-enhancing drug.

According to Sadie, "We tend to pay more attention to the information in our heads than the information in our bodies. Embodiment meditation is a practice to learn the language of the body and to translate that information to a language our brains better understand."

Embodiment is a mindful state or way of being that emboldens intuition and amplifies our consciousness - a heightened way of perceiving our own sensory experiences. The practice helps us to tap into all the information coded into our nervous systems through years of experience and stimuli. Though it may be a crossover into the more spiritual side of wellness, embodiment's impact is very physical, visceral and impactful.

Curious to dive deep, we asked Sadie to share some insights on her own practice and experience as a facilitator. Discover the depth of mindfulness embodiment mediation can offer, and how to start integrating this practice into your daily life...

What is Embodiment?

To help break down the concept, Sadie directed us to Liam McAuliffe, a healer and meditation expert and has a masters in psychology. This is his explanation of embodiment:

In embodiment meditation, we apply meditative focus to specific physiological sensations, locations, and processes in our bodies. This allows us to cultivate and refine an interface between our cognitive and physiological awarenesses that’s more comprehensive than if we were to exclusively focus on the breath or recite mantras as is done in traditional practices.

Mindfulness breath practice is aimed at understanding the nature of the mind and reducing our emotional reactivity to our thoughts. The goal of mantra practice is to interrupt our habitual thought patterns while activating subtle energy centers. Though both can produce powerful physical sensations, the difference between the embodiment and these meditative practices is in the way embodiment meditation relocates the area of meditative focus from the processes of the mind to the interface between our minds and bodies.

What Is Embodiment Really About?Embodiment is about becoming more deeply present and aware of sensory information. All of the feelings that influence our thinking and physical actions are stored in our bodies. As such, our bodies contain an innate intelligence that is often out of reach to our surface consciousness.

We tend to pay more attention to the information in our heads than the information in our bodies. Embodiment meditation is a practice to learn the language of the body and to translate that information to a language our brains better understand. Embodiment deepens our capacity for presence, receptivity, and compassionate exchange with all of reality.

How Does Embodiment Enhance Mindfulness?Embodiment helps us tap into the nuanced sensory experience of living in our bodies. It helps us distinguish the difference between our defenses and the true, unadulterated essence of our identity.

We have patterns and we have preferences, and everything we do enhances our personality and sense of self -- modern society encourages identification with these qualities and influences. It dilutes the connection we have to our own intuition. What happens if we step outside of the roles - and traumas - we identify with, and just allow those things to be part of our evolving, or processing?

Embodiment is like giving a container to ourselves to have an experience of ourselves. We're so identified with our personality. By creating space to explore how we exist in the world and in our bodies, we tap more deeply into the current moment and experience a sense of autonomy in exploring it. It is the purest form of presence.

How Can It Help Us Process Trauma?

We get so attached to our coping mechanisms, to the point that sometimes we block ourselves off completely from accessing the root of our pain. But if we can get into the place where not just reacting to that raw vulnerability, but becoming aware of how it is represented in our physical body then we can actually begin processing trauma without having to talk about it.

Embodiement allows us to sit in meditation where we're actually allowing some of that emotional intensity to process out of the nervous system -- literally move through the synaptic space, arrive at our conscious awareness and, when faced without the defense of fear, eventually fall away. The body starts to become more able to be present, and the influence of trauma is revealed without threat so we're able to approach it and actually deal.

Mindfulness is all about learning to sit comfortably with yourself as sensations rise and fall away. Because of trauma, our capacity becomes limited - the body can only feel certain sensations. Embodiment can increase our capacity to be sensitive but also grounded, so we're not getting lost in the sensitivity to those traumas.

How Can It Ease Stress + Anxiety?A lot of stress and anxiety comes from not being present, from the influence of unprocessed thoughts, feelings and emotions, and from the possibility of loss. So many people are stressed out about being safe when the reality of the situation is we can't ever really be totally 'safe'. When we become grounded then we're able to leverage the higher intellect and consciousness - it can come through and actually override some of these fear-based principles that are running the show.

What Does It Feel To Be 'Embodied'?It's like a knowing, like a lack of needing, like a consciousness of the moment experienced from the part of self that doesn't need to be validated to be real and transformative. The energetic quality of embodiment is calm and comprehensive. It feels peaceful, even when we feel vulnerable or out of control. There's not a right or wrong way to do it.

It changed the way that I work. It changed the way that I moved. It changed the way that I communicated movement. It changed the way that I related to my loved ones. It changed the way I related to myself and gravity and space, my healing process, bless you, and again, how I learn and integrate information because I was doing it from my intellect before. It wasn't right or wrong and there was nothing wrong with that process. It's just that there was so much more available otherwise. Even if you think you know yourself really well there's always more information to perceive and more work to explore.

Just like meditation, anyone can choose to become more embodied, but to learn more about embodiment
meditation, find Sadie and her studio practice. Join a meditation practice with Sadie here.
