9 Ways To Get More Energy That Have Nothing To Do With Sleep

Sleep matters. Like, a lot. But these ideas from certified holistic nutritionist, Kristin Dahl, have nothing to do with getting a full eight hours. Most of us could use more energy and are overlooking these easy opportunities to get pumped up.

Here are nine ways to nurture our systems daily for more energy and head-to-toe balance - especially during that extra energy-draining time of the month. Be sure to click through the links for recipes and more info on each point...

9 Natural Ways To Get More Energy

Due to excess stress, environmental toxins and endocrine disruptors, most of us experience hormonal imbalances intermittently throughout our lifetimes. As we age, our overburdened systems no longer tolerate the high-sugar, low-protein, minimal-sleep, high-toxin lifestyle of our youth. We begin to require regularity in all areas of our life to nourish and balance our constitution in order to thrive vibrantly like we once did effortlessly.

There are several remedies and tools that work to re-regulate our body systems to increase energy, reduce PMS symptoms, boost libido and enhance fertility. As each of us is unique, we all require slightly different protocols to re-align and heal. Even so, the following considerations can offer radical transformation for most...

01. Support the Lymph System

The lymphatic system is a complicated network of fluid-filled nodes, vessels, glands and organs that are present throughout the body. Although we may not see or feel it, the lymphatic system is a key detoxification pathway. It cleanses toxins and protects us against harmful invaders. It works by carrying toxins away from the tissues and into the bloodstream, where it can be filtered by two of the body’s main detoxification organs: the liver and kidneys.

Support lymphatic detoxification by properly hydrating throughout the day, exercising daily, dry brushing, rebounding, getting regular massages and using breathwork techniques or practicing breath-focused forms of yoga.

It’s also imperative that we keep our detoxification pathways clean by cleansing seasonally with whole foods, focused self-care routines, spiritual practice and stress reduction.

02. Simply Eat More Protein

Start every day with healthy fats and proteins. Think blueberry-based smoothie with protein powder and coconut mct oil + cinnamon, or eggs and greens + avocado. Include protein at every meal and never go longer than three hours without eating. Eat well-balanced snacks by combining crunchy foods with healthy fats and protein-rich foods like hummus, pesto, guacamole, hard-boiled eggs and nuts, paired with crunchy veggies.

Reach for foods low on the glycemic index. These foods convert slowly to energy in the bloodstream, helping you feel more balanced. Low-GI foods include low-sugar fruits (like berries), low-starch vegetables, nuts and seeds... and protein-rich foods. Consume more complete proteins like quinoa, buckwheat, amaranth, spinach, tempeh, coconut yogurt, eggs, hemp seeds, goji berries, chia seeds and most protein powders. When combined, the following foods make complete proteins: beans and rice, nuts and grains (oatmeal with nuts), nuts and beans, lentils and rice.

03. Drink More Water

When you hydrate properly, extra salt leaves your body in your urine and will help stop swelling and bloating that can both be uncomfortable and drain our energy. Adequate water intake also ensures that you will be hydrated, eliminating regularly and supporting the regulation of all body systems so they don't have to work harder than they need to. Shoot for half your body weight in ounces daily!

04. Reduce Caffeine Intake

Caffeine can cause blood-sugar fluctuations and stress the adrenals. It is also highly stimulating to the nervous system and overconsumption increases cortisol and adrenalin production. Eliminating/reducing your intake will help to alleviate general pain, menstral cramps, reduce internal stress and decrease overall body tension. This will also give your adrenals a chance to rebalance and heal. Try this around your cycle and you will notice a dramatic shift.

05. Increase Fiber

High-fiber foods like whole grains, legumes, cruciferous vegetables and low-sugar fruits will help the body to effectively eliminate excessive hormones from the intestines and liver, particularly estrogen.  Cruciferous vegetables are high in indole-3 carbinol, which supports liver detoxification. These food sources are also loaded with protein and B vitamins to nourish the endocrine system and support the adrenals.

06. Cut Processed Sugar

Cravings for sweets trend upward when you're tired, under stress or have PMS, but cookies, sweets and processed foods will send your blood-sugar levels on a roller coaster ride. When you have a blood-sugar crash later on, you’ll feel tired and irritable. Limiting your sugar supply sets the stage for steadier moods and stable blood sugar. Around your cycle especially, load up on sweet potatoes, which offer a natural source of sweetness and are high in antioxidants and fiber. Eat more avocados and bananas - both are rich in potassium, which plays a huge role in keeping mood swings in check. This important mineral also helps to reduce fluid retention and decrease bloating. Lack of adequate potassium can lead to muscle cramping, which is possibly the worst symptom of all. In addition, B6 may improve mood, irritability and breast tenderness.

07. Reduce Processed Salt

Too much processed salt increases fluid retention, creating excess bloating and fatigue. Processed foods such as canned soups and packaged snacks are especially high in sodium as well, so avoid them whenever possible. Be sure to reduce salt the week before your cycle and be sure you are using low-sodium, mineral-rich Himalayan salt.

08. Use Herbal Supports

Use ashwaganda as an adoptogenic hormone balancer - it works to heal adrenals, rebalance hormones and support restorative sleep. Ashwaganda is best in tincture form.

Add in turmeric to help reduce energy-draining inflammation.

Drink chamomile tea, as it contains properties that relieve muscle spasms and may therefore help reduce the severity of menstrual cramps. In addition, chamomile also reduces tension that may lead to anxiety and irritability.

Red raspberry leaf tea remineralizes the body, is high in B vitamins and tones the uterus, relieving menstrual cramping. Drinking milk thistle and dandelion tea throughout the month also helps to keep the liver clean, enhances digestion and supports blood-sugar regulation.

09. Increase your mineral intake

Consume magnesium-rich foods; vital for regulating hundreds of functions in the body, magnesium plays an important role in preventing mood swings and irritability, poor sleep, headaches, bloating and fluid retention. Add more magnesium-rich foods to your diet, such as pumpkin seeds, dark leafy greens, figs and bananas.

Increase iron-rich foods before and during your menses to replace what you’ve lost each month and to avoid anemia. High sources of iron include: beet root, spinach, dark leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, lentils, chickpeas, navy beans, kidney beans, olives and nettle tea. Blackstrap molasses also contains 3.5 mg of iron per tablespoon, and has been used in folk medicine as a "blood builder" for centuries.

Magic in Madness: Learn To Love Mercury Retrograde

In the words of T Swift, "haters gonna hate, hate, hate" but we think mercury retrograde deserves a chance to shake it off and start over. Famously feared for technological disasters, communication blunders and general life-madness, Mercury retrograde can also be a beautiful opportunity to switch gears and grow.

Mercury goes retrograde three times this year, and we plan on taking a more positive approach: Feng Shui expert, Dana Claudet, is breaking it down and sharing a few practical tips to make this upcoming merc retro more, er, palatable...

What is Mercury Retrograde?

Mercury retrograde is the term given to the three times a year that the Earth, in its orbit, passes by the slower moving planet Mercury. As this happens, Mercury seems to be moving backward in its orbit. The same happens when the Earth passes Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Pluto, Mars, Neptune and Uranus - they appear to move backward, “in retrograde.”

Its reputation: It’s no secret that Mercury retrograde has a life-scrambling reputation! In astrology, it’s the planet that rules communication and transportation among other important things. Modern-day astrological interpretations of Mercury retrograde include tech problems like computer crashes, flights being cancelled and being advised to avoid signing contracts or starting new things, at all costs.

But we’re talking about more than two months out of every a year, and I don’t feel that anyone should be in fear or anticipating the worst for even a day -- and two-plus months is extreme, you know? Awesome astrologers like the Astro Twins point out often that there’s almost always some sort of major planetary retrograde happening that affects us… and there’s no reason to focus on the negative.

Merc Retro's deeper meaning: Communication and transportation - how we move through our days and connect to our lives - are in the spotlight. If these things are symbolically slowing down, maybe that’s the big lesson? Slowing down. Preparing more. Connecting more. In all the rushing we tend to do, big details get glossed over sometimes but when we slow down they can come to light. Also, the maintenance that hasn’t happened (…like backing up the computer, or taking your car in for maintenance, or reading the contract clearly) can also become clear.

Anticipating things going wrong each Mercury retrograde seemed to bring terrible things to my own life (it’s even been proven in many scientific studies that we get more of what we expect!), so when I shifted to seeing Mercury retrograde as an extra-special time to get more grounded, mindful and organized, these months every year turned from anxiety-inducing to an opportunity to upgrade life.

How to redeem the retrograde for yourself: Just that - redeem it! Decide it’s going to be amazing, avoid reading doom-saying posts (!) and instead of looking at obstacles that pop up as a cosmic curse, perhaps you can see them as an opportunity to upgrade, rest and reset yourself?!

Conceptually, think of it this way: In feng shui, when you clear lots of clutter you tend to see a wave of chaos -- like the giant mess when you pull everything out of a closet before it’s reorganized. Slowing down can show you some clutter you may not have seen before, and these big cosmic slow-downs are an opportunity to clear it all and connect much deeper to life in ways that are meaningful. You won’t just have a clear closet if you embrace more life de-cluttering, you’ll make more room for new opportunities, a clear mind, more wellness and lots of creative genius. So if things get stirred up, it can be a chance to make life even better!

Practically, a few things you can do are:

clear your clutter Let go of stuff at home and in the office that’s overstayed its welcome, along with the emails, the social media overwhelm… everything! You’ll make space for the new to arrive. Organize your calendar and, while you’re at it, schedule some time off for yourself if you can.

Experiment with space clearing Open windows for fresh air. Burn some sage or palo santo or diffuse some essential oils. Space clearing clears the air of negativity and stagnation. It’s clutter-clearing for your home’s energy, and it’s great to do anytime you need a fresh start.

Rest Sleep much more, long enough to wake up without an alarm if you can. Shut down the phone an hour or two before bed. Take more breaks and naps. If you’ve never explored the Hygge philosophy of cozy living, now’s a good time to do some comfy-making -- get more plush rugs or throw blankets, make lots of herbal tea, light candles and enjoy the bliss of it all.

Finish things Unfinished projects are a sneaky form of clutter that can weigh us down, and finishing even one unfinished project at home or at work can be life-lightening.

Start envisioning and planning When you’re well rested, clear minded and surrounded by clear space, you’ll likely have amazing ideas. Make yourself a vision board, a secret inspiration board on Pinterest, or start writing out exciting plans for brilliant things ahead.

The best part about Mercury retrograde is that if you slow down and flow with things, you might just find yourself feeling, looking and thinking better than ever… and when it’s over, you might be waiting for the next one!

How To Seed Cycle + Why You Should For Glowing Hormone Health

This story originally ran in 2018, but it's so useful we're bringing it back!

What The Heck
is seed cycling? Holistic nutritionist, wellness pro and founder of Women's Wellness Collective, Kristin Dahl recently introduced us to the term while decoding the hormonal stages of our monthly cycle. We're intrigued by the idea and love the holistic nature of the approach. How can loading up your diet with certain seeds, at certain time of the month, benefit the inner-workings of your body? Kristin explains...

Seed cycling is a method of using various seeds to support different phases of our monthly cycles to balance hormone levels, relieve PMS and perimenopause symptoms, stimulate menstruation if it’s absent (amenorrhea), increase fertility and support the body in healing more serious conditions like ovarian cysts, PCOS and endometriosis. Seed cycling is an incredibly natural and inexpensive way to support the female body, and it’s easy to do. It simply uses food medicine as the healing modality, alleviating the need for any other therapies, medications, supplements or herbs. Cycling refers to the rotation of different seeds between our two main menstrual cycle phases (follicular and luteal), which helps to regulate hormone secretions within the body and hormone excretions out of the body.

About Your Cycle...

Our menstrual cycles have two main phases:

+ The follicular phase (phase 1) begins with menstruation
+ The luteal phase (phase 2) starts after ovulation

In traditional ideologies, the phases would be on a 14-day rotation of a 28-day cycle, with phase 1 beginning on the new moon, and phase 2 beginning on the full moon. Realistically, a 28-day cycle doesn’t always happen, and that’s alright. A woman’s cycle may range from 21 to 35 days. Being removed and disconnected from nature can be a contributing factor to our cycles being off from this ancient rhythm, as can experiencing chronic levels of unmanaged daily stress. However, using the seed cycling system can help to set your menstrual phases in sync with what is right for your body. It’s also helpful to reconnect with nature as often as possible, spending time outdoors and practicing earthing and to begin following the moon phases and gazing at the moon several times throughout the month.

Keep in mind that change takes time, and we need to honor the delicate balances and sensitivities of our bodies. It will likely take three to four cycles before you begin to see noticeable changes, so be patient and allow the power of food medicine to heal your body. It’s helpful to continue cycling, even after you have noticed substantial changes.

*Consult with a holistic practitioner if you have severe hormonal imbalances & need individualized support.

The cycling uses alternating seeds high in specific oils and nutrients to balance the hormones that are prevalent in each phase. Use this two-stage guide to support hormone balance and regulation.

How To Seed Cycle

You will consume one tablespoon of each of the specific freshly ground seeds per day in equal parts (two tablespoons total). Where to start depends on how familiar you are with your cycle and how regular it is. This is where a period tracker or a good old-fashioned calendar can help.

Follicular Phase
The follicular phase lasts about 14 days, starting on the first day of menstruation. In this phase, our estrogen levels start low and steadily increase in preparation for ovulation (the release of an egg) and potential pregnancy. Rising estrogen levels increase luteinizing hormone (LH) levels, while decreasing estrogen levels cause the release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) - so there’s a fine line between too much and too little estrogen, and imbalanced levels can wreak havoc on these other hormones too. If we keep estrogen levels balanced, LH and FSH levels will follow. Cycling with seeds that contain phytoestrogens will do just that. Phytoestrogens are a plant-based source of estrogen that adapt to the body’s estrogen levels. They increase estrogen levels where needed, yet they also can decrease excess estrogen in the body. This is thanks to the lignans they contain, which bind to estrogen receptors and help to modulate estrogen production. Along with phytoestrogens, seeds that are high in omega 3s are also beneficial, as omega 3s help to reduce inflammation in the body, regulate FSH levels and support reproductive membrane function.

Along with the seed cycling, fish oil supplementation during the follicular phase can be a beneficial addition as it’s a powerful anti-inflammatory and another great source of omega 3s.

Start phase 1 cycling on the first day of your period and continue it for approximately 14 days. If you’re aware of your day of ovulation (which can be determined by testing your cervical mucus or using an at-home kit), continue the cycle until this day. If your follicular phase lasts longer than three weeks, this is a sign that you may have some imbalances.

Flax Seeds
+ High in lignans to block excess estrogen production
+ High in omega 3s

Pumpkin Seeds
+ Rich in zinc, which prepares the body for progesterone secretion in the next phase
+ High in omega 3s

Fish Oil (Bonus)
+ Contains EPA and DHA, important omega 3 fats found only in cold water fish
+ High in lignans

Luteal Phase

The luteal phase should last at least ten days, and any less is a clear indicator of low progesterone and possible fertility issues. Progesterone is responsible for enhancing the endometrium (uterine lining) and facilitating egg implantation, and reaching adequate levels of progesterone requires this timeframe. The luteal phase is brought on by the sudden drop in estrogen, FSH and LH, which occurs just after ovulation. This is when progesterone levels should begin to rise steadily. Estrogen levels also increase during this phase, and if they get too high, they’re responsible for PMS symptoms and a difficult cycle. Progesterone keeps estrogen in check, and so modulating healthy progesterone levels is vital for reproductive health. In this phase, we want to focus on omega 6s, which convert into gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) in the body, supporting progesterone levels and reducing inflammation in the body related to PMS.

In addition to the seed cycling, evening primrose oil (EPO) supplementation during the luteal phase can be helpful as well, as it’s another source of omega 6s and helps to reduce PMS pain and boost fertility.

Begin phase 2 after ovulation or after two weeks to balance hormones. If you have an irregular cycle or if you suffer from amenorrhea, an easy start date is on the first day of the new moon. This allows for a simple date sequence to keep track of and allows you to follow an equal, alternating 14-day cycle.

Sesame Seeds
+ High in lignans to modulate estrogen and progesterone levels
+ High in omega 6 (which converts into GLA in the body)

Sunflower Seeds
+ High in selenium, which supports liver function to prevent clogging from excess hormones, resulting in proper hormone excretion
+ High in omega 6 (which converts into GLA in the body)

Evening Primrose Oil (Bonus)
+ High in gamma-linoleic acid (GLA) and other important omega 6 fatty acid

Things to Remember

+ Always use raw (unroasted, unsalted/seasoned) seeds to ensure they have their medicinal properties in full. Use organic seeds when available.

+ Seeds are high in fats and can oxidize when left in the sunlight and warmer temperatures. Try to keep seeds in a cool, dark place - preferably the fridge.

+ Seeds begin to oxidize 15 minutes after they’re ground, so grinding fresh is best. If this is an inconvenience or not always available, store pre-ground seeds in the freezer and take the portion as needed.

+ Seeds can be eaten with other foods. Try them in a smoothie, salad, soup, or grain bowl. If you’re eating them with warm foods, add them to the dish after cooking to avoid denaturing the nutrients.

Grab this recipe for Seed Cycling Crackers to make this all incredibly easy!

Are You Really Taking Enough Vitamin D? What You Need to Know About The Supplement In the Spotlight

mbg offer code

Nutrition nerds everywhere are celebrating as vitamin D finally gets its place in the sun this year. It may be the complex and unfortunate events of the pandemic that has everyone taking more of the essential supplement, but with such a breadth of benefits, we’re hopeful about vitamin D supplementation finally getting the attention it deserves. Here’s why…

You're Likely Deficient In Vitamin D

Unfortunately, over 40% of the adult population in the U.S. are considered 'clinically insufficient' in vitamin D. While many of us know that sun exposure and foods like eggs and coldwater fish provide some level of vitamin D intake, it’s said that over 90% of the U.S. population fails to consume even just 400 IU of vitamin D per day through food.

When you consider that doctors from Dr. Mark Hyman to mindbodygreen’s Ashley Jordan Ferira, Ph.D., R.D.N. agree that 5000+ IU of vitamin D is more appropriate for most adults, the dietary gap becomes starkly clear.

“Unless you're eating 30 ounces of wild salmon a day or downing 10 tablespoons of cod liver oil with breakfast, you might need to start taking a supplement to make sure you're getting optimal levels.” - Dr. Mark Hyman to mindbodygreen

While some of us have access to lots of sun and get a ton of the “sunshine vitamin” through daily exposure, most of us spend the majority of our day indoors -- and when we do venture out, we slather up in sunscreen. Those basic daily lifestyle factors can hinder optimal vitamin levels, and, as we age, our bodies also slow down overall production of natural vitamin D.

What the Heck is Vitamin D? A Quick Science Lesson…

Yes, vitamin D is a vitamin, but what many people don’t realize is that it is also a “preprohormone”. Active in the body, vitamin D actually behaves as a hormone!

+ It supports immunity.* Optimal vitamin D levels have been shown to positively affect the immune system in a variety of ways, including supporting white blood cell function, helping the immune system adapt to and ward off threats, and more.*

A deficiency in vitamin D has also been associated with a variety of autoimmune issues.

+ It promotes gut health.* Vitamin D has been shown to play a role in promoting beneficial gut bacteria, which, in turn, have a positive effect on gut function and metabolism.*

A variety of studies have shown that vitamin D plays a key role in the health and integrity of the gut mucosal lining, which acts as a barrier between your digestive system and bloodstream.*

+ It helps support thyroid health.* An estimated 20 million people in the United States have some type of thyroid disorder. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in thyroid health as it helps regulate the production of thyroid hormones* which have widespread, multifaceted functions in the body including metabolism, weight, mood, the sleep cycle, musculoskeletal health, reproductive health, and immunity. Thyroid hormones also play a role in keeping your hair, skin, and nails youthful and strong.

Dr. Jordan Ferira On Optimal Vitamin D Supplementation

One interesting fact about supplements and nutrition that most consumers don’t understand is the difference between NIH’s daily recommended intake and the intake required for ‘optimal health’.

According to Ashley Jordan Ferira, Ph.D., R.D.N., “The NIH recommends 200 to 600 IUs of vitamin D a day. That's the amount to prevent rickets, a disease caused by vitamin D deficiency. This is not a goal to aim for but rather a minimum to avoid.”

mbg vitamin d supplement and ingredients

mbg offer code

Ferira and many other trusted nutrition and medical experts believe that 5,000 IU of vitamin D daily is the true goal for vitamin D sufficiency. Ferira even states that some supplement companies assume that consumers will simply take more of their vitamin D supplements (of 400 - 2,000 IU) “as needed”.

If you're a nutrition nerd or someone with a deeper interest in the fine print on vitamin D, we’ve got you: scroll to the bottom of our story for a few more in-depth details on vitamin D levels and testing.

Why Vitamin D Is An Essential Supplement For Nearly Everyone

We know our readers are pretty savvy on the basics of wellness, including essential supplements like Vitamin C, D, probiotics and daily greens.

Before Covid-19 entered the chat, perhaps some of us considered a solid dose of sunshine, and maybe a little cod liver oil everyday, enough vitamin D supplementation unto itself, but as the importance of our immunity has peaked, most of us are learning that it's just not enough.

We asked frequent TCM contributor, Dr. Maya Feller to weigh in on vitamin D deficiency and she told us:

"Many of my patients have increased the amount of time they spend indoors, as a result, I've seen an increase in vitamin D deficiency.

maya feller on steps

Dr. Maya Feller

“Globally, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency impacts approximately 1 Billion people. The reasons are multifactorial and can include limited intake of vitamin D-rich foods as well as limited exposure to natural UVB. Taking a high-quality bioavailable source of Vitamin D can help to bridge the gap. vitamin D3 potency+ is the ideal form of this essential micronutrient and delivers 5000 IU that supports whole-body health."

mindbodygreen’s vitamin D3 potency+

If you read The Chalkboard regularly, chances are you’ve also been a long time fan of mindbodygreen as well. Their cutting edge line of supplements has quickly become a reputable resource for us and we’ve been truly impressed by the research behind their formulations.

Here’s what makes mindbodygreen’s vitamin D3 potency+ so notable:

+ Its (almost) vegan -- and wildly sustainable. Yes, the gelcap is gelatin, as that’s the most natural way to go these days, but mindbodygreen sources 5,000 IU (125 mcg) of extremely rare, sustainably sourced algal vitamin D3 (as VegD3®) for this -- the purest form of plant-origin vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) in the world.

+ At 5,000 IU per capsule, we’re happy to see that this supplement is more potent than some popular everyday supplements available out there, many at 1-2,000 IU per serving. If there is one thing you take away from this story, keep the number ‘5,000 IU’ in mind when you shop for vitamin D*. As always, testing your vitamin levels with your doctor will give you the most effective and accurate information.

+ Organic extra virgin olive, flaxseed and avocado oils have been added to this supplement because vitamin D is more bioavailable when consumed with healthy fats. You get the additional benefits of these omega-rich oils daily:

Avocado is rich in the omega-9 fatty acid known to have anti-inflammatory properties and support metabolic health.*

Flaxseed delivers a powerful source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions.*

Extra virgin olive oil is concentrated in oleic acid, the celebrated, heart-healthy unsaturated fat that predominates the Mediterranean diet.*

Vitamin D is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies that is practically impossible to restore naturally. We love that mindbodygreen’s vitamin D3 potency+ is optimized with absorption technology for bone, muscle and immune health -- and we’re impressed they’ve done it with an algae-based formula!

Signs of Vitamin D Deficiency

Some of the most common signs of vitamin D deficiency include:

+ Low mood
+ Lowered immunity
+ Brain fog
+ Weak bones

Whether you have marked symptoms of a deficiency or not, Director of Scientific Affairs for mindbodygreen, Ashley Jordan Ferira, PhD, RDN shared with us that, "While some supplements are needed on an individual and targeted basis, a vitamin D supplement is unique because it's relevant to almost everyone. Our diet simply isn't cutting it for this particular micronutrient.”

“We also know that relying on variable sun exposure won't cut it, and comes with its own set of risks. Without a vitamin D3 supplement, the likelihood that you're vitamin D deficient (25-hydroxyvitamin D blood level < 20 ng/ml) or insufficient (< 30 ng/ml) is high.*

Optimize your health. For a limited time, get an exclusive 20% off your first month of vitamin D3 potency+ subscription with mindbodygreen using code CHALKBOARD20 Every mindbodygreen supplement is fairly priced and sustainably sourced -- get set up with the monthly supplements you need easily -- and for a great deal!  -- while it lasts.

As promised, here is a bit more fine print on measuring your vitamin D levels for those who want to dive deeper...

+ Pivotal pharmacokinetic research demonstrates that 1,000 IU of vitamin D will increase a normal-weight adult's 25(OH)D level by about 10 ng/ml. So, 3,000 IU would bump us up to 30 ng/ml (but don't stop there; this is the boundary for insufficiency), while 5,000 IU would help us achieve 50 ng/ml. That's the math.

+ Sufficient vitamin D levels—which are measured via blood work using the biomarker total 25-hydroxyvitamin D [or 25(OH)D, for short]—are considered to be greater than 30 ng/mL.
To consistently exceed this mark (remember, 30 is the starting point, not the goal), research shows you need a minimum of 3,000 IU of vitamin D3 every day.*

+ If you want to become more intimately acquainted with your vitamin D status, plus track the success of and individualize your supplementation regimen, you can ask your health care provider to measure your serum 25(OH)D level.

so much collective loss in the world right now, we hope a few of these titles will strikes you as interesting reads as we make our way through the year...

There’s a famous Marx Brothers quote that has always resonated with me. Groucho, playing a hack doctor, checks Harpo’s pulse, then shrugs, “Either he’s dead or my watch has stopped.”

For me, that scene so perfectly encapsulates the inexorable link between humor and grief, loss and laughter, that I made the line an epigraph to my most recent novel. Initially, I included it more as a personal note, a kind of tonal guide when writing, but it endured through edit after edit and, ultimately, remained.

As a writer and a griever, humor is how I process and endure. But I understand that that’s not true for everyone. Not only do we all grieve differently, but our reactions and needs change as we move through various stages, both general and specific to our individual experience.

There are impactful novels and memoirs that explore all different experiences of loss in different stages of a grief journey. Fiction offers a chance to commiserate and escape, to find solace in the reactions of characters who can live out our experiences without the pesky limitations of reality. In memoir, we can find truth, companionship and connection, on someone else’s path.

Here are six books, including my own, that speak to different experiences of grief:

FINDING ACCEPTANCE | Competitive Grieving is a dark comedy, and unlikely love story, about loss and the chaotic aftermath of death. But it’s really about struggling to find catharsis, about the challenge of coming to terms with what’s happened while navigating the relationships your loved one left behind. When Wren loses her best friend Stewart, she struggles to believe that he’s actually gone. Instead of processing quietly, she’s forced to contend with his absurd group of other friends (and one adorable, but irritating lawyer) and finds herself confused about how well she knew her friend—and how well she knows herself. The book explores the struggle to accept the many realities of grief, including the (sometimes flawed) nature of the people we’ve lost.

RELEASING ANGER | Beach Read by Emily Henry is most definitely a love story, but it’s one that begins with more rage than romance. In the wake of her father’s death, January Andrews is mad—at the world, at her dad, at her mom, at the grouchy pseudo stranger in the house next door (who is actually her longtime rival). Certain realities that came to light after her father’s death have rendered her broken, unable to write, unable to function, unable to channel the kind of hopeful optimism that has previously characterized her existence. The story is about finding love in the wake of loss, but it’s also about releasing anger, especially towards the person who is gone.

LIFE AFTER LOSS | Ove is grouchy (and old). At least, he seems grouchy (and old) to the neighbors in his housing development. In fact, he’s way beyond grouchy; he’s deeply depressed. A recent loss has left him without the will to live himself. However, the harder he tries to duck out of life, literally and figuratively slamming his door in the face of (too perky) people (and a cat) who want to know him, the more they return again and again to interrupt his plans. Fredrik Backman’s A Man Called Ove tells the story of man who, against his will, begins to realize that there is life after loss and slowly opens himself up to joy.

FINDING CONNECTION | Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner (a.k.a the indie rocker Japanese Breakfast) is the true story of a young woman who loses her mother to cancer, a reality that seems to threaten to erase her sense of self, as well. Pulling in elements of food, family dynamics and notions of identity, Zauner reconnects with what it means to her to be Korean and, through that process, stays connected to her mother. This is a story about finding lasting connection with someone we love, even in their absence, and developing new understanding of ourselves.

IN MEMORIUM |  Written by one of the most brilliant essayists of our time, The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion tells her story of grappling with grief after her husband died suddenly of a heart attack at dinner, while her daughter was lying unconscious in an intensive care unit. Much of the book is told in the form of memories, as she recalls days that were a blur of shock, unreality and the fog of the past. What do our shared stories become when we’re the only ones left to process them? How do we begin to live our lives without our most important people? How do we savor and understand our memories, while still living our lives?

BEFORE AND AFTER |  A devastating and beautiful novel, not for the faint of heart, The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai depicts the rise of the AIDS epidemic in Chicago in the 1980s, specifically how it ravages and impacts one entangled group of friends. Chapters toggle between the perspective of Yale Tishman, as he navigates the challenges of that time, and of Fiona, his friend Nico’s sister, who is in Paris 30 years later, tracking down her estranged daughter. The book underlines that sense that, after a trauma or tragedy, there is often a before and after—who we were and who we become. It looks at the same loss from the chaos of the inside and then, later, in the rearview mirror, with a certain amount of hindsight, but still an ongoing need to try to process and understand.

Fall Beauty Trend Report: The 5 Best Healthy Hair Treatments At Home

Some hair problems run deeper than what a styling session can cover. Don't get us wrong, we love a quick hairspray or dry shampoo fix, but they don't really do much for us in the long run.

Lately, we’re looking for hair products that actually improve the health, look and feel of our hair IRL. These 5 condition-specific treatments go beyond hairspray and conditioners that shellac your strands with wax. While we love the instant payoff of those kinds of products, while we’re spending more time at home, we’re looking for wearable treatments that address the health of our scalp and hair whether for thickness, strength or shine.

Every treatment on our shortlist comes to us from our fall beauty partner, Davines (da·vih·nes). The family-owned Italian brand embodies everything we value in a clean beauty brand:

+ Clean + Sustainable | All formulations favor the use of ingredients of natural origin, are generated with renewable electric energy and packaged in recycled materials. Tubes and labels are made with plant-based plastic from renewable sources (sugarcane).

+ They’re B Corp certified | Davines looks at business as “a positive force capable of generating profit and at the same time creating a virtuous impact on people and the environment.” Their Italian headquarters is a world-class carbon-neutral village with a greenhouse at it’s center!

+ Approved by Top Pros | Used in the best boutique salons here in L.A. from Chris Mcmilllan to Meche Salon to Andy LeCompte, Davines’ epic menu of in-salon Naturaltech treatments can also help take your haircare to the next level this fall.

5 Clean At-Home Hair Treatments

These treatments are part of Davines new and improved NATURALTECH line and we’ve been trying them at home to balance the unique hair woes we’re experiencing in 2021 — whether stress-induced or damage from that perma-ponytail…

davines scalp shampoo

TO REVITALIZE DAILY | NATURALTECH Detoxifying Scrub Shampoo | Shop Now

We’ve been obsessed with scalp scrubs for years, and looking at the growth of ‘hair scrubs’ in the beauty industry, this trend is here to stay!

Here’s why: a detoxifying scalp scrub addresses the real root of most hair issues: the scalp! Product build-up and the wear and tear of life take their toll on our scalps just like the rest of the skin on our bodies.

Davines’ version is filled with gentle natural surfactants and scrub particles. If you’ve never tried a scalp scrub before, a scrubbing shampoo is the easiest way to try it and see what all the hubbub is about. It’s less messy, rinses more easily than some goopy scrub treatments and feels absolutely therapeutic.

FOR SCALP RECOVERY | NATURALTECH Elevating Scalp Recovery Treatment | Shop Now

This leave-in treatment is designed especially for a dehydrated and sensitized (read: red and itchy) scalp. Use on damp hair after showering, massaging the product into the scalp until it is completely absorbed and don’t rinse out. You can also use the treatment throughout the day if needed

The anti-inflammatory treatment is packed with a microbiotic booster for your scalp’s microbiome balance and tasmanian pepper berry extracts to help nourish and calm.

In testing, Davines found that Elevating Scalp Recovery Treatment improved scalp hydration by over 20% and skin barrier integrity by 10% immediately after the first use.davines treatments

What You Should Know About Stress, Inflammation + Your Brain

We all know about the kind of inflammation that occurs when we stub our toe  or worse. That kind of acute, short-term inflammation is one thing, but more and more scientific research shows that silent inflammation is the common link that can fast-track aging.

Reducing chronic, silent inflammation throughout the body may be the single most important thing you can do on a daily basis to look and feel your best.

Meet Naomi Whittel | Named by Prevention magazine as a leading innovator in the natural products industry, Naomi Whittel is mother of four and a fierce advocate for empowering women to take control of their health and the health of their families. For over 20 years, she has been exploring the world to uncover the most potent and effective natural health solutions on earth. She is the founder of Reserveage Nutrition, has served as CEO of TwinLab, and is the author of Glow15, the New York Times best-selling book on diet and healthy lifestyle, as well as High Fiber Keto.

The Nearly Miraculous Health Properties of Turmeric

Over the decade since my first visit to India, the incredible health benefits of turmeric have been the subject of thousands of scientific studies that are now pointing to turmeric as Mother Nature’s secret weapon to combat the harmful effects of every day, silent inflammation.

Of all of my journeys, nothing has left a deeper and more lasting impression than the first of my many trips to India. I knew at that time that the rate of serious cognitive decline in India was far lower than in the U.S. (a trend that still continues).*

In India, turmeric is used as a universal flavoring, much like salt is used in the U.S. and is included in products in nearly every aisle of a grocery store.

Gold-standard clinical studies have shown that turmeric is perhaps the most effective natural substance on earth at inhibiting COX-2, an enzyme that is responsible for sparking your body’s inflammatory response.**

Consuming turmeric has become a vital part of my daily health regimen. I cook with it, I drink it in tea, and I take a supplement with a full research-based dose of it every day.

Getting the right daily dose of turmeric, along with another key antioxidant, can help combat harmful inflammation, save you from having to deal with serious health issues, and keep you looking and feeling younger than your years.

6 Warning Signs of Harmful Silent Inflammation

As scientists begin to understand the body’s complex systems better, a clearer picture of how every day, silent inflammation can impact your health is emerging.

Here are six of the most common symptoms:

Memory Impairment| Research has shown that when the brain is inflamed, memory formation and recall both suffer. Unfortunately, many people start to believe that scattered thoughts and trouble focusing are an inevitable part of aging—but they’re not! Silent inflammation is likely the culprit.*

Cholesterol Imbalances | A growing body of evidence has shown that inflammation triggers increased production of cholesterol. The body attempts to protect the lining of blood vessels and arteries from damage, often leading to harmful levels of build-up and serious cardiovascular issues.*

Elevated CRP Levels | High levels of CRP are an indication that inflammation is present in your body. The data linking high levels of CRP to increased heart risk has led a growing number of physicians to routinely run a test for cardiac-specific C-reactive protein.*

Aches and Pains | Silent inflammation creates heightened pain sensitivity in the body, as well as common everyday aches and pains in joints and muscles. If your body feels sore and stiff, systematic inflammation is likely to blame.*

Skin Issues | Silent inflammation is the hallmark of the redness, itchiness, flaky skin and discomfort associated with many common skin conditions.*

Digestive Discomfort | The gut microbiome is so complex, it is sometimes referred to as a “second brain.” And while there are many factors that can disrupt its delicate balance, digestive issues can often be traced to harmful inflammation within the digestive tract.*

If you’re experiencing one or more of these six symptoms, keep reading to learn how to safely and naturally combat harmful silent inflammation to save you from having to deal with serious health issues like these, and keep you looking and feeling your best.

The Strong Connection Between Inflammation + Brain Health

Of all the health issues associated with harmful silent inflammation, perhaps the most serious are those related to brain health. And this is where getting a research-based dose of turmeric every day can work wonders.

A recent landmark study found that turmeric promotes the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a growth hormone responsible for youthful brain function. According to scientists, higher BDNF levels may hold the key to improved memory and sharper thinking as you age.*

girl with headache

What’s more, a recent study found that daily turmeric intake produced short-term memory improvements in adults over 60 who were predisposed to memory loss. It worked like a six-hour memory boost!*

And perhaps most exciting of all, preliminary research is indicating that turmeric may inhibit the formation of debris fragments that can lead to age-related cognitive decline. This may be the result of curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, being one of the few substances on earth with the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier.*

These brain health benefits alone are enough of a reason to take a research dosage of turmeric every day. But the benefits of controlling harmful silent inflammation are more wide-ranging than that*

Turmeric Benefits for Heart, Joints and Digestion

+ Extensive research has shown that elevated levels of an inflammation marker called C-reactive protein (CRP) is a strong indicator of long-term cardiovascular risk. Breakthrough new research is now showing that turmeric can lower levels of CRP by an amazing 32%.***

+ Another recent clinical study showed turmeric can also significantly lower triglycerides, another major cardiovascular risk factor, by an astonishing 47%.*

+ Turmeric is also great for your joints. One landmark study showed that turmeric relieved joint pain as effectively as a popular mainstream pill while reducing stiffness and improving overall joint function—all without side effects.*

+ Scientific studies show that turmeric’s anti-inflammatory benefits can aid in promoting healthy digestion as well. In one study, turmeric was associated with up to a 25% reduction in digestive discomfort, with two-thirds of participants reporting overall improvement in digestive function.*

Why Turmeric + Resveratrol Are So Complementary

There is little doubt that controlling harmful inflammation is vitally important to achieving what I like to call “healthy longevity.” Making turmeric part of your daily health regimen is a vital part of achieving this.

You should also know about the latest scientific research that points to the essential nutrient, resveratrol, for maintaining youthful vigor. Combined, these two two “super-nutrients” make up one potent antioxidant formula, simply called NAOMI Turmeric + Resveratrol.

You may be familiar with the “French Paradox”: Despite a high-fat diet loaded with cheese, fatty fish, and fatty oils, the French have significantly lower incidences of serious heart problems compared to Americans.*

Research indicates that the mitigating factor is that the French typically drink red wine – lots and lots of red wine.

As it turns out, red wine is a great source of one of the most uniquely potent antioxidants on the planet – resveratrol.

For over a decade I’ve been spreading the word about the amazing health benefits of resveratrol. And I have made sure to emphasize there are two types of resveratrol compounds – CIS-resveratrol and TRANS-resveratrol.

This is vitally important because over recent years, resveratrol has been the subject of thousands of clinical studies, and only the active compounds in TRANS-resveratrol have been scientifically shown to provide documented health benefits.

This research shows that this “super-antioxidant” helps increase a group of seven proteins called sirtuins which together have been nicknamed the “youth genes.” According to this research, the more sirtuins you have the better chance you have of what I call “healthy longevity.”**

While I fully admit that I enjoy a glass of red wine or two on occasion, to get the full health benefits of resveratrol, it would take drinking as many as 100 glasses of wine per day – clearly neither practical or advisable!

I make sure to take a trans-resveratrol supplement every day. I consider this super-antioxidant to be my “ultimate nutrition insurance policy.”

“If I Could Only Take One Supplement Each Day, This Would Be It”

I’ve been deeply involved in the world of healthy living and nutritional supplements for more than 20 years. And during this time I’ve had a hand in developing over 300 successful wellness and anti-aging formulas.

It is my business and my passion to tap into the best scientific minds and ingredient resources from around the world to bring the most effective natural wellness nutrients to you, and in their most pure and potent forms.

There are many highly-effective nutrients available to address specific health concerns, but for every day overall wellness, there is nothing that comes close to turmeric and resveratrol. And in times like these, our bodies need all the health support we can get.

And to make taking these two “super-nutrients” as convenient as possible, I’ve combined them together in one potent antioxidant formula, NAOMI Turmeric + Resveratrol.

naomi supplement offer

I know that isn’t a very creative name, but when you are dealing with essential basics, sometimes simple is best. With the convenience of two easy-to-swallow veggie capsules per day, NAOMI Turmeric + Resveratrol provides:

High Potency Turmeric:
This formula contains a turmeric extract standardized to 95% curcuminoids, up to twice the standardization of other highly advertised and far less effective turmeric formulas.

Research-Level Dosage:
At 1,000 mg, you are getting a research-based dosage of turmeric every day. Many brands contain only 100 mg or less, and you’re throwing your money away for such pixie-dust levels. That’s only 10% of the levels you need for the cardiovascular, brain, joint and overall inflammation-fighting benefits you need.

Super-Antioxidant Resveratrol:
The 100 mg of TRANS- resveratrol included in this formula is the only kind of resveratrol scientifically shown to help stimulate the “youth gene.”

Enhanced with Grapeseed Extract:
This formula also includes 25 mg of grapeseed extract which provides additional heart health benefits. Research shows that grapeseed can help reduce blood pressure and improve blood flow.*

Superior Absorption:
The one big flaw of turmeric is that it is hard for the body to absorb. To address this problem, this formula includes 10 mg of BioPerine® black pepper extract, which has been shown to increase turmeric absorption by up to 2,000%. As a bonus, BioPerine also increases the absorption of resveratrol by over 200%.**
