Is Your Vitamin C Serum Even Working? The Truth About Antioxidants In Your Skincare

chili tlc herbal face food

ACCORDING TO J. MICHAEL ZENN, Herbal Face Food's CEO and Founder, you can't achieve anti-aging without antioxidants. But what does that actually mean? With so many vitamin C, E, A—you name it—serums on the market, how are any of us meant to know what works and what doesn't?

Michael Zenn, who started the brand in the hopes of naturally healing his chronic skin issues, is going where no other brand has dared to go before... and that's onto the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) scale. By consistently leveraging science and data to measure the antioxidant levels in a variety of foods, herbs, and botanicals, Herbal Face Food is producing the most antioxidant-laden skincare out there, and it's all sustainable, wild-crafted, ethically-sourced, and completely edible (which explains why celebrities like TLC's Chilli and model Gisele Bündchen's obsession with it).

"We say, 'Don't do any harm. Don't put anything in your skin that would harm your skin or body.' But why not take that opportunity to give your largest organ—which is also your biggest mouth that you're feeding all day long—something that is massively nutrient-dense, and restorative? Put something in your skin that it's going to eat all day long, making your body younger from the outside in."

We asked Michael Zenn how to keep our skin resilient against external stressors, inflammaging, and Father Time, and we're still reeling (but also healing) from everything he had to say.

The Truth About Antioxidants In Your Skincare With Herbal Face Food's J. Michael Zenn

WHAT CAUSES AGING OF THE SKIN? Oxidation. Plain and simply, oxidation is synonymous with aging while antioxidants are synonymous with anti-aging. Oxidation is responsible for—I'd say—95% of all aging. The easiest way to understand oxidation is to imagine a molecule with too few electrons in its outer shell, so it's forced to borrow or steal from another molecule, which prompts a domino effect: each molecule keeps stealing another molecule from each other. This is called "rusting" or aging, which is not dissimilar to when a banana or apple turns brown after it's cut. It's just cellular degradation.

Antioxidants stop that stealing process because they have more electrons in their outer shell than they need, so they come in and give their electrons to the molecules missing one and stabilize these molecules in the process. The stronger the antioxidant is, the more electrons it has to give.

WHAT ARE DIFFERENT WAYS TO SUPPORT THE SKIN BARRIER? AND WHY DOES IT MATTER SO MUCH? A lot of people have penetrated and damaged their skin barrier through over-exfoliation and chemicals. Botanicals don't do that. Herbal Face Food is a super nutrient-dense superfood salad for the skin. We don't treat the skin, we heal it.

It's the same thing if you look at the pharmaceutical industry vs. holistic practitioners. Holistic practitioners are trying to get your body into an optimal state so it can heal itself. Pharma is trying to treat the body to get an effect. For example, if you have indigestion, a Western doctor would give you a chemical-based solution to calm the indigestion rather than help the body to heal the problem. It's all very allopathic (aka symptom-led).

Look at melasma. The usual solution is to use harsh lasers or bleaching / whitening agents. Herbal Face Food looks to help skin cells heal themselves. When you restore that cell to its original state, that pigment goes away. We're feeding your body from the outside in. If you're also supporting your body from the inside out—well—then you've perfected both worlds.

THERE ARE SO MANY PRODUCTS OUT THERE CLAIMING TO BE "THE REAL DEAL." how can people tell what works vs. what's hype? All you have to do is Google the plant and the ORAC scale. Most of them have been tested. If they don't have an ORAC rating or haven't been tested, then they likely don't have much antioxidant value at all. So often, I'll look at plants or botanicals in other products to really see if they're effective. Nine times out of 10, they're totally impotent.

Look at skincare labels the same way you would read a nutrition label at the grocery store. Look for botanicals and see what the first ingredients are. What are the first 10? If the most potent aren't even until the end, you're likely not getting an effective product.

the eye cream herbal face food

WHAT ARE MOST PEOPLE GETTING WRONG ABOUT TREATING + HEALING THEIR SKIN? The quick-fix, "pill" concept. They have pills now that will cause you to lose weight or not absorb the food you're eating, and people will run to a quick fix. They also tend to think that what a doctor cooks up in a lab is better than what nature has provided.

In my book, The Self-Health Revolution, I talk about mother's milk—how in the 50s, 60s, and even 60s, doctors were able to convince women that what a man created in a lab was better than mother's milk, which was preposterous. A mother’s milk is the most nutrient-dense source in the universe that keeps adapting to evolve with the baby’s needs as they grow. Advertising took women off of it to move them towards formula.

The same thinking is going on today because people believe things made in a lab are technologically more advanced, which could be true. The green, clean products today are totally impotent. A lot of people try to go toward clean skincare and don't see results, so they resort back to chemical-based skincare. However, no one is jacking up the potency like we are. We're taking highly-potent botanicals and then creating a concentrated formulation that is thousands and thousands of times more powerful than anything else on the market.

The challenge in—what I callThe Great Skin Dilemma is that potency and organics are an oxymoron as it relates to most skincare. If you opt for clean and green skincare, you're getting non-toxic formulas that won't do much more than moisturize the skin. Because of this, even the Whole Foods, nutrition label-reading customers who want organic skincare, end up running toward chemical-based products that yield short-term results—even if that means diminishing results and toxicity over time. herbal face food antioxidants

HOW DOES HERBAL FACE FOOD LEVERAGE ANTIOXIDANTS: Herbal Face Food's formulation is based entirely around antioxidants. What we've found is that all antioxidants are not created equally. If you go to any major beauty retailer, 95% of the antioxidants you're going to hear about are vitamin C and vitamin E. But interestingly, vitamin C is actually pretty low on the ORAC scale, making it a pretty weak, antiquated antioxidant.

We’re the only company in the world that found the scientific scale (ORAC) that is the great equalizer and can tell us how powerful something can be as an antioxidant. With all of this information in mind, we have gone around the world to find the most potent antioxidants and formulate all of our products around that as our organizing principle. This approach has given us massive results against the 10 most visible signs of aging.

Take The Cure X, for example: You not only get all of the anti-aging benefits, but you also get a corrective serum that tackles acne, psoriasis, eczema, scarring, rosacea, melasma—you name it. That's all from the power of these plants. Yes, we're accounting for the ORAC rating, but we're also adding in regenerative plants that have profound cellular properties beyond the ORAC scale. We're always looking for more. I just came back from Asia, and discovered 30 new plants that I'm excited to incorporate into our formulas.

The Cure X and serum X herbal face food

THOUGHTS ON SUN EXPOSURE? I think, by and large, the sun is our friend. I think the sun can be incredibly healthy in the right amounts—also if you're using the right kind of restorative products. I actually think most sunscreen today is pretty toxic, and the ones that aren't are just not pragmatic, leaving most of us with chalky faces out in public.

Our products are so high in antioxidants, they provide natural SPF protection. Just The Eye Cream alone offers almost 50+ SPF protection while the serums have a 20+ SPF. The cool thing about Herbal Face Food is that it actually heals the damage of the sun in real time if you're actively wearing it. You don't need to wait to be burned to repair the skin. You can just wear it proactively in the sun.

Our products are fully edible (you might not enjoy them), but that's how natural they are.

IF YOU COULD ONLY RECOMMEND ONE PRODUCT TO TRY FOR HERBAL FACE FOOD NEWBIES, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I would typically tell people to start with Serum I, and if you could afford it, go for The Cure. If you're working on something specific—like breakouts or melasma, or something more chronic—start with The Cure. If you're looking for general daily anti-aging, use Serum I, and then build up to II and III over time.

Each bottle of Herbal Face Food takes 1,000 hours from harvest to finished product. We fly in ingredients from all over the world. A lot of our stuff comes wild-harvested and wild-crafted by endemic tribes (like in the Amazon, for example). The sourcing is incredible, and everything is poured and mixed by hand in small batches. If you go and buy our product from our site, it’s less than 30—or even seven—days old. Most of the products that you buy in in-store at major retailers are a year-to-a-few years old, just sitting on the shelf because they’re loaded with preservatives that allow them to remain shelf-stable.

I know the price point can seem somewhat overwhelming, but I would say that our products have been designed to be economical because you don't need a lot to see results. The Eye Cream is our most expensive product, but it's also our most economical. For a lot of people, it lasts six months, so when you crunch the numbers and amortize it on a monthly basis, it's not really that much outside of what you're probably already spending.

We also have a no-questions-asked, money back-guarantee. Go ahead and try the largest sizes (50ml), and if you don't like them or see any results, there's absolutely no risk. You can also save 30% on any subscription.

Absorb a whole new level of anti-aging skincare with 30% off any Herbal Face Food purchase. Use code TCM30 at checkout.

Colostrum Is In, So I Decided To See If The Hype Was Real With ARMRA Colostrum’s Immune Revival

armra colostrum

armra colostrum save 15%

BACK IN 2022, we learned that colostrum could be 3x more effective than the flu vaccine at preventing the flu, according to a 2007 study. We thought that was pretty impressive, so we started to dive deeper into the world of colostrum, which has basically become the newest "cool thing" in wellness on the tips of everyone's tongues (even though it may as well also be the oldest thing in the history of wellness). What exactly is it? Why is everyone talking about it? Why haven't we all been using it as a part of our every day health-and-wellness regimens with so many reported benefits?

At the helm of the colostrum ship is ARMRA Colostrum, the palindromic brand bringing a proprietary bovine colostrum concentrate with proven superior efficacy to the forefront of the wellness zeitgeist. With over 5,000 published research studies documenting the benefits of bovine colostrum and its ability to optimize health during all stages of life, ARMRA Colostrum is anything but a trend, and has become the difficult-to-say, easy-to-take bioactive whole food strengthening our immune systems, rebuilding our guts, and optimizing our daily performance.

Everyone around me was colostrum'ing, so I felt it was only appropriate to join the LA wellness scene once more and see what all of the Erewhonites were raving about while sipping on their afternoon adaptogenic smoothies post-workout (with colostrum added, by the way). Join me on my 30-day journey with ARMRA Colostrum's Immune Revival.

A Refresh On Colostrum

Colostrum is not "just another pretty face" in mainstream wellness. Known as "liquid gold," colostrum is the first nutrition we receive in life, containing all essential nutrients our bodies need to thrive. Produced by all mammals within the first 48-72 hours after giving birth, colostrum is a whole food that has served the vital function of protecting and strengthening the mucosal barriers of infants before their own barrier matures. Because colostrum is such an innate part of our cellular blueprint, it has the potent ability to activate our body's most healing systems, fueling some serious regeneration in the process.

This is all thanks to the numerous bioactives found in grass-fed bovine colostrum, such as peptides, prebiotics, and growth factors, which have been shown to support cellular repair, cellular energy production, and mood. With this support comes healthier cells, potentially leading to a stronger, more resilient gut. People have also found colostrum to be insanely beneficial when it comes to strengthening the immune system because of the presence of numerous immunoglobulins (which assist the immune system), prebiotics, peptides, and growth factors.

armra colostrum

Why I Love ARMRA Colostrum

Before you run to your local web browser to start adding any old colostrum to your cart, it's important to note that not all colostrum is created equally. In fact, the sourcing and manufacturing around colostrum has become a hot-button issue with many concerns surrounding heat-pasteurization, ethical harvesting, pesticides, and grass-fed cows.

ARMRA Colostrum uses a gold standard of production throughout its entire supply chain to preserve the potent effects of this "liquid gold."

LOW-TEMPERATURE EXTRACTION | ARMRA Colostrum leverages proprietary Cold-Chain BioPotent™ Pasteurization Technology to concentrate colostrum’s over 400+ functional nutrients in their most natural and bioavailable form, ensuring maximal efficacy in the body.

RESPONSIBLE SOURCING | All of ARMRA's colostrum is sourced from grass-fed cows raised on family-owned U.S. dairy farms. Their calf-first sourcing ensures that only overflow colostrum is collected after baby calves finish feeding and receive all the nutrients they need.

CLEAN + DIGESTIBLE | In order to enhance the concentration of essential bioactives, ARMRA Colostrum removes unnecessary compounds from bovine colostrum like casein and fat for the highest potency colostrum on the market, uniquely optimized for human health.

THIRD-PARTY TESTING | Most impressively, ARMRA Colostrum can back up all of its health benefit claims with dual-arm, third-party clinical research trials.

The Benefits Of ARMRA Colostrum

ARMRA Colostrum uniquely strengthens your body's barriers, which are responsible for creating a tight seal that guards against nasties (aka environmental triggers) that break down your barrier, affecting your whole body health over time. Using the ancient wisdom of colostrum with clean, sustainable practices and modern science, ARMRA Colostrum's proprietary colostrum leverages potent prebiotics that support your microbiome, a host of peptides and antibodies that strengthen your immune system, and dozens of antioxidants and bioactive molecules that optimize cellular health for a whole body revival.

Some other call-out-worthy benefits:

+ Strengthens immunity
+ Ignites metabolic function
+ Fortifies gut health
+ Restores sleep
+ Improves mood, focus & energy
+ Supports sinus health
+ Enhances skin complexion
+ Activates hair growth
+ Fuels better performance & recovery

Everything I Noticed During My Colostrum Caucus

When ARMRA Colostrum Immune Revival came my way, I had a real "You had me at hello" moment. My friend's boyfriend had already reported that he was obsessed with his colostrum jar and three different people in my neighborhood mentioned that they felt less bloated and more amped post-workout. I even saw one woman online suggest that ARMRA Colostrum helped her hair grow back after menopause. Transparently, I knew ARMRA before ARMRA knew me, you know what I mean?

I took my product integration slow so I could really see how it made me feel over the month ahead. ARMRA suggests using 3-to-4 scoops, so I followed suit accordingly. "Cold beverages only!" I repeated to myself every time I was tempted to pour a scoop into my morning bone broth or hot water and lemon.

armra colostrum immune revival

I decided to take my Immune Revival pre-workout, in the afternoon on an empty stomach, and as the last thing before bed to support my post-workout recovery, strengthen my gut health (which definitely suffers by the middle of the day), and improve my sleep quality (which is lacking because I lollygag in the evenings). Initially, I didn't notice much other than I actually really enjoyed the taste and texture of it. Because it literally comes from a milk source, it has a creamy flavor off the bat so it was pretty easy to consume. Oftentimes, I didn't even need to pour into anything, but directly into my mouth. Hardcore, I know!

After about a week or two, I started to notice that my skin wasn't breaking out with such fervor as it normally does during my cycle fluctuations. I also noticed that I felt less bloated throughout the day, which both myself and my Chinese Medicine Doctor considered to be an absolute revelation (it's one of my top complaints). As someone with very stubborn candida (the hard strain), I am very skeptical and/or cautious about ingesting things for fear that they'll irritate my stomach...and I can usually tell within a minute of consumption because my sinuses plug and I get a sugary taste in my mouth. Within the month of taking ARMRA Colostrum, I was having way fewer sensitivity reactions to food, which was so freeing, I can't even tell you.

The best part was that when I knew I wasn't going to be home, I would take one of the Immune Revival Stick Packs with me for extra support on the go (which was especially helpful for meals out).

Final Thoughts + Gut Feelings

I'm still very much on my ARMRA Colostrum journey, and am excited to see how I further "optimize" over the coming weeks / months. Knowing that ARMRA Colostrum was a bioactive whole food vs. a supplement really encouraged me to keep on colostrum'ing on along the way. I never felt like I was overwhelming my system with endless supplements that had to be processed through my digestive tract and liver. Instead, I felt like I was adding in something supportive that was giving my system the strength it needed to function optimally on its own—pure, natural, clean, and sustainable.

Put Carbs Back On The Table With Gluten-Free Chef + Cookbook Author Phoebe Lapine

phoebe lapine

CARBS HAVE GOTTEN A BAD RAP, but cookbook author and gluten-free chef Phoebe Lapine wants us to slow our roll. "Carbs are a convenient scapegoat, but there is more to the story—namely how we eat them."

While Phoebe suggests that going either high-carb or low-carb doesn't benefit the average person, she does believe that slowing down the digestion of carbs—and therefore slowing down any blood sugar spikes—has the potential to course-correct metabolic issues that are the cornerstone of so many modern chronic illnesses, including diabetes, fatty liver disease, PCOS, potentially Alzheimer's, autoimmune disease, and depression.

Her latest cookbook, Carbivore, provides 130 carb-loving recipes that help redefine a healthier relationship with our noodles, grains, and potatoes, so we can have our proverbial cake and eat it too (without the fatigue, insomnia, breakouts, depression, and chronic illness). Every recipe is all about improving your carb tolerance by going Slow Carb, not low-carb.

She gave us some tips on the best ways to go slow carb without sacrifice, so we can get back to putting carbs on the table.

phoebe lapine carbivore

5 Ways To Go Slow Carb With Phoebe Lapine

01 | Don’t eat sugar on an empty stomach | The honey in our tea, “fruit juice concentrate” added to dried cranberries, and table sugar sprinkled on oatmeal are all the same things once they hit your body: some combination of glucose, fructose, or sucrose. Whether or not the sources are natural or manufactured in a lab, all types of sugar are energy molecules in their simplest form, and on an empty stomach, can reach your bloodstream as quickly as within 5 minutes of eating them.

This immediacy might be helpful if you were found lost and starving in the wilderness, but since the average American eats 100 pounds of added sugar a year, most of us rarely experience an energy deficit. Part of counteracting the worst effects of simple sugars is making sure you have other macronutrients in the tank to slow their roll to your blood stream.

We can define an empty stomach as not having eaten for 3 hours. Which means it is most important to avoid sweet options for breakfast and as snacks. Sugar on an empty stomach can impact your blood sugar at any time of day, but studies show that they have a particularly negative halo effect in the morning.

Of course, we have been trained, especially in America, to embrace sweet things for breakfast, despite their ingredients being almost identical to baked goods that we'd think of as dessert. But don’t kid yourself: muffins are essentially breakfast cupcakes. Scones are cookies. And sugar-coated cereal with mini marshmallows is no different than candy. Try to rebrand breakfast with delicious options like this savory oatmeal!

02 | Embrace fiber first | If you’ve gotten your relationship with sugar under control, that’s already half the battle. But starch-based carbs like bread, pasta, and rice can also be broken down and absorbed into the blood stream quickly. The most important change you can make falls under the category of “food sequencing.” One study found that you can reduce your overall glucose spike by over 70 percent just by eating fiber first, followed by protein and fat. Starches and sugars (even fruit) should ideally come last (dessert!).

As you learned in my first tip, fiber, protein and fat slow down our digestive organs—specifically our stomach—from emptying its contents quickly into the small intestines. But fiber also plays another important role in the digestive process: it forms a literal barrier as it moves through your system, preventing simple sugars from getting immediately sucked through your intestinal wall into the blood stream.

You can think of your intestinal wall as a fine mesh sieve. If you poured a glass of apple juice through it, the liquid would pass easily and leave no residue. But if you were to add some mashed up apple first? Well, the skins and seeds would clog up the mesh and make any liquid added thereafter take longer to make its way through. The result is a slow drip in the bowl, versus an unobstructed stream.

You’ll find plenty examples of this fiber first, “slow carb” ethos in ancient culinary traditions. In Japanese culture, for example, it’s common to enjoy a bowl of edamame at the beginning of a meal. This means any white rice that follows will be metabolized slower.

phoebe lapine carbivore slow carb

03 | Whole foods are always better than processed foods | You can use the above example to understand how apple juice, which has all the fiber removed, hits our bloodstream much faster than a whole apple. The macro lesson is that the closer a food is to how nature intended, the better it usually is for your blood sugar.

An actual whole food is something that hasn’t undergone any processing. It’s the whole almond, not the almond four or the almond milk. Instead of an industrial processor doing all the work, your body will be forced to break down that almond. And this means any carbs will get converted into glucose much slower.

When we chew our food, we break fiber down into smaller particles. But even if you chewed your dinner for 10 minutes straight, you won’t be able to do the job of a high-powered blender, which pulverizes the fibers into microscopic bits. Luckily, I have some other strategies in the Carbivore book for how to fortify your smoothies and soups with whole foods to make them slower carb.

04 | Add a “carb companion” to your meal | When we look back a few generations at our grandparents’ meals, the difference isn’t found necessarily in in what people were eating, but how and how much

Let’s take toast for example. My great grandparents may have started the day in the exact same way as I do: with a slice of bread. Only instead of slathering it with jam or jelly—or, gasp, margarine—they were more likely to use full-fat butter.

That loaf, if made from white flour, was likely developed from a sourdough starter—a bacterial process that reduces both the gluten and carb content of the loaf. Even more likely, it wasn’t made from white flour at all, but from dark, dense whole grain rye berries.

Instead of orange juice, they might have washed down breakfast with a glass of milk, which arrived in a bottle on their doorstep each morning with a slick of cream on top.

On the surface, the comparison seems like a difference of ingredients and taste. But on a molecular level, the stark contrast boils down to macronutrients. Specially carbohydrates’ other costars: fiber, fat and protein.

If you follow the “fiber-first” mantra and eat a salad before your spaghetti, you won’t have too much to worry about. But as a rule of thumb, it’s best to add fat, fiber, and protein—what I call carb companions—to your bowl.

The good news is that carb companions can make your meals even more delicious! The vast majority of the recipes in Carbivore (and on my website) are designed to have built in carb companions.

05 | Eat More, Snack Less | Even when implementing all these best practices, your blood sugar still rises and falls every time you eat—that is the nature of the beast. Each time we consume food, we ask a lot of our metabolism. During the act of digestion, our immune system is put on hold so that our hormones can rush into formation and blood can flow to our gut to do all the heavy lifting—sorting, secreting, and absorbing.

The solution isn’t to skip meals. Rather, it’s to space out our meals—going 4-to-5 hours between meals so that our organs can catch up. The migrating motor complex (MMC) is our small intestine’s street sweeper wave that cleans up after a meal. When it’s not working as it should, food remnants and (potentially) unwanted bacteria are left to fester in the very long and winding path of our intestinal tract. Our MMC is powered by nerve waves, and they only kick in after a fasting state of 90 minutes or more.

That means if you’re someone who’s prone to snacking, even if it’s a healthy, Carbivore-approved whole food snack like a handful of nuts every hour, your MMC isn’t able to fully clean up after your meal. This can contribute to bigger issues like SIBO, but it can also make your overall digestive system less efficient.

If you’re feeding yourself nutritious, well-balanced meals—meaning plates packed with carb companions, and free of hidden sugars on a regular schedule—you shouldn’t be facing the types of food cravings that drive snacking.

Lastly, most pre-packaged snacks are full of added sugar. Often, these will make it even less likely that you’ll get to the next meal without going back for more snacks.

For four years now, Colon Hydrotherapist Kortney Sanders has been transforming the microbiomes of some of the most elite clientele from all over the world at the famed We Care Spa in Desert Hot Springs.

There's a ton of information out there about cleanses, and plenty of mainstream backlash. Holistic detoxification programs—from juice cleanses to colonics—have been treasured by the wellness set for ages, but thanks to the internet, it can be really hard to determine which cleansing protocols are effective and actually provide meaningful benefits.

As we head into spring, which is an optimal time to reset, reground, and plant new seeds for the season to come, we turned to the famed We Care Spa, which changed our lives during the winter. We got the "juice" from expert Colon Hydrotherapist Kortney Sanders, who has worked with some of the most elite clientele from all over the world in helping them optimize their cleanse. We asked Sanders to give us her thoughts on doing a fast, cleanse, or detox in the most gentle and effective way possible. Some of her tips may surprise you...

Preparation Matters

Preparing to cleanse is just as important as doing the cleanse itself! I’ve seen guests who have done absolutely no prep for their fast, and that is a totally different experience than guests who committed to cutting out inflammatory components of their lifestyle in advance.

In order to get a truly effective detox, you need time to get rid of surface-level toxins that come from everyday pleasures like coffee, sugar, alcohol, even red meat. If you haven’t started to cut out the things that cause those surface-level toxins, it can be really uncomfortable during a cleanse because your body is essentially getting “shaken up,” and these toxins are trying to leave in a state of chaos, which can cause more significant Herxheimer reactions.

When your body has been “pre-cleansed,” it has the opportunity to focus all of its energy on effectively getting rid of deeper-level toxins.

Nourish Throughout Your Detox

There are a great number of fasts, cleanses, and detoxes. Even the phrase “juice cleanse” or “liquid fast” can mean a lot of different things, depending on how it's being performed.

At We Care, we structure our programming around “liquid nutrition,” which we consider a nutritive fast that is fast-mimicking rather than one that completely deprives the body of essential nutrients. In order for your body to have enough energy to fight against toxins, it needs a certain level of probiotics, gut bacteria, electrolytes, vitamins, and minerals.

We make sure all of our guests are getting this well-rounded nutrition—in spite of consuming less than 400 calories per day—but in liquid form so the body doesn’t have to spend so much time trying to break it down. If the nutrients you’re getting are already accessible and easily absorbable, your body can leverage that remaining energy it would otherwise need to digest, and use it to help the body heal and get rid of toxins and pathological cells.

Fun fact: About 30% of the energy you get from solid food is directly used to digest it. That’s a lot of energy being spent just to make sure you can digest your food!

If you don’t have the time to commit to a full, leave-your-life-behind cleanse, one way to encourage your body’s detoxification at the most basic level is to have one liquid meal per day—like a protein shake or a nutrient-rich green juice.

Include Supportive Supplements

Supplementation is super important when it comes to an effective, supportive cleanse. Here are some of the supplements we love at We Care:

Enzymes | There are two types of enzymes: Plant-based and animal-based.

Plant-based enzymes are naturally occurring enzymes, which should be in the food that grows in the wild. Thanks to modern-day agriculture, the enzymes and nutrition in our food has massively depleted, so we rely on them to help break down solid foods (even the ones that might still be sticking around in your system). Especially during a cleanse, plant-based enzymes continue to get to work to break down solid food and allow your small intestine to absorb any remaining valuable nutrition.

Animal-based enzymes, on the other hand, typically replace enzymes that bodies should be naturally producing, but are struggling to do so. If you really need them, or have been advised by a professional to take them, that’s one thing. However, they can create bodily dependency over time, making your body’s own enzymatic function lazy.

Probiotics | A cleanse is a great time to work on your gut’s microbiome. At We Care, our guests take probiotics and prebiotics, so your body can use the time where nothing is really “going on” to help rebuild your gut with what it’s been missing.

Milk Thistle + Dandelion Root | Some of our guests opt to perform a phosphorus liver flush during their cleanse. While your body rests, it’s a great time to focus on the liver, using liver-supporting herbs like milk thistle and dandelion root.

We also give our guests the option to perform a parasite cleanse (did you know between 60 and 75% of people have some kind of parasite living inside of them?!). While getting rid of parasites, you can’t eat any sugar, spicy foods, or carbohydrates, making a fast the perfect time for a parasite cleanse. However, these cleanses can require a bit more planning and time (given that parasites sync up with the phases of the moon).

We definitely don’t recommend trying to tackle your liver, gallbladder, and parasites all at the same time. Just pick one!

Focus On Detoxing Through Multiple Body Systems

We have five major organs of elimination—your gut, your skin, your lymphatic system, your liver, and your kidneys.

Here are some things you can do to support each vital system:

Gut | Your gut is your body’s default organ to remove things from the colon, which is why we love colonics as a great and effective way to do this. When you’re fasting, you’re not necessarily having solid movements on your own, but the default system of your body is to collect all of these toxins from these newly energized cells, which are sinking into your colon.

Skin | The other organ of elimination is your skin (which is also your body’s largest organ!). Sweating out toxins by sitting in a sauna or dry brushing to open up the pores to detox the skin is incredibly effective. Just note: When your body starts detoxing, it can sometimes push toxins through the skin, which can result in acne in the process. It’s totally normal and will clear up!

Lymphatic System | The lymphatic system is the only fluid-moving system in your body that doesn’t have its own pump. Given that the lymph system is like your body’s very own garbage disposal, stimulating it is essential to properly eliminating toxins. This process of getting the system to move things through doesn’t require a heavy lift. Dry brushing, rebounding, exercise, massages, facials, and gua sha are some basic examples of things you can do no matter where you are.

Liver + Kidneys | Your liver and kidneys are majorly responsible for your body’s detoxification processes, which means they need extra support during times of cleansing. When you enter a heavy detox or cleanse, all of the toxins that have been hanging around get stirred up and need to be processed through the liver. As mentioned before, milk thistle and dandelion root are incredible herbs for this process. The kidneys, which are helping the liver, can benefit from herbs like pau d’arco, which is great for the kidneys, blood, and even candida.

You can also consider a castor oil packs on your stomach during a sauna for 15-25 minutes.

Take Time To Rest

The whole point of a cleanse—beyond detoxing—is to give your mind and body true rest.

People are always wondering if they can continue exercising, working, or socializing during a cleanse. At We Care, we’d say “honor what you’re doing.” Don’t overwhelm yourself or make things so intimidating that you’re afraid to even do it. Whatever process or integration you choose, it needs to be approachable and manageable. During any fast, we recommend avoiding anything that involves over-exerting your body or attempting to keep all wheels in your life turning.

I, personally, love that it’s called a “fast” when you’re actually being asked to be slow. It’s okay to pause. Once you allow yourself not to have all of your daily comforts (like potato chips or your daily spin class), you start to learn more about yourself emotionally and mentally, as well as your relationship to food. It can be a stressful thing to become aware of, which is why we have additional tools to support those moments like breathwork and yoga.

Make Reintegration Nice And Slow

It’s always interesting when people living more cosmopolitan lives, who are used to being go, go, go, want to be “fixed” when they come out of We Care. But, when you leave, you need to be able to find a way to integrate these changes into your real life.

After your cleanse, your transition from fasting to eating solid foods again needs special attention. Remember, your organs have been resting and repairing themselves, so you’ll want to take “baby steps” in guiding them back to breaking down, digesting, assimilating, and eliminating solid food. To help make this transition as easy as possible for you, we recommend breaking the fast over the same amount of days as you’ve fasted.

We would recommend…

Days 1-3 | Organic and locally sourced fruits, salads, soups, and veggies.
Day 4 | Add in more complex plant food such as seeds, whole grains, brown rice, and legumes.
Day 5 | Start to integrate wild fish (salmon, sardines, or herring), if desired.
Day 6 | Add organic poultry and goat dairy, if desired.
Day 7 | While we don’t recommend it, this would be the best point to add in grass-fed, free-range red meat, coffee, and/or alcohol.

Happy cleansing!

All About The Full Moon In Libra On March 25, 2024

SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE... The Full Moon of March 25 is super important. First, it is the placeholder for Passover, which—due to this year being a leap year—is celebrated under Taurus (April 22) instead of Aries, where it is supposed to be. The second reason is that this lunation is a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse, so to all you Aries and Libras: Moses is coming with some handy miracles. In my book The Astrology of 2024 - A Cosmic Navigator Guide to Piloting the Once and Future Year, I provide detailed predictions and the meaning of the eclipse, but here is a small sample for each sign:

Aries | The Sun in Aries empowers you with added vigor. Something is coming to an end and can be a bit rough on some of your relationships. This is the Full Moon of Moses (Passover) and Jesus (Last Supper), a time of liberation and ending bondage. Note: Passover in 2024 is delayed due to issues with the Lunar calendar.

Taurus | The Sun illuminates your shadow realm, empowering healing, letting go, and connecting to your imagination. Potential challenges might arise related to confinement, hospitals, or confronting pain. With the Moon influencing your service, a call to aid others may be evident. Monitor your health and diet. Anticipate closure, perhaps related to health or work and coworkers. This is the Full Moon of Moses (Passover) and Jesus (Last Supper), a time of liberation and ending bondage. Note: Passover in 2024 is delayed due to issues with the Lunar calendar.

Gemini | The Sun illuminates facets of your life like friends, affiliations, and government relationships. An excellent period to integrate technology and enhance your overall efficiency. The Moon casts its light on children, love, and joy, potentially evoking heightened emotions. A chapter might close, intensifying feelings. This is symbolic of Moses (Passover) and Jesus’ (Last Supper) narratives, signifying liberation and the breaking of chains. Note, Passover in 2024 observes a delay due to lunar calendar discrepancies.

Cancer | While the Sun spotlights your career, the Moon’s tugging at your home and family, which are super important for you. Tough pill to swallow, but it’s high time you shift your gaze from family needs and zoom in on your professional ambitions. This lunation is the original Full Moon linked to Moses (Passover) and Jesus (the Last Supper). Talk about liberation and breaking chains! And yep, a quick heads-up: Passover is a month late due to some lunar calendar quirks.

Leo | The Sun illuminates the essence of your beliefs and philosophy, urging you to radiate your authentic self and reveal your inner brilliance. With the Moon’s guidance, you’ll uncover the messages that yearn for expression, either through your writing or connections with relatives. Contractual or business landscapes may shift during this time. Historically, this phase aligns with the original Full Moon of significant events like Passover (for Moses) and the Last Supper (for Jesus) – both emblematic of emancipation and breaking free. Note, however, that Passover in 2024 has been postponed due to discrepancies in the Lunar calendar.

Virgo | The Sun illuminates your passion, intimacy, sexuality, granting you access to collective resources and magic. The Moon acts as a conduit, linking you to your innate talents, skills, and financial prowess. Balance your personal financial ambitions with those of significant others. This period resonates with the profound liberation celebrated during Moses’ Passover and Jesus’ Last Supper. Note: 2024’s Passover celebrations witness a delay due to lunar calendar intricacies.

Libra  | The Sun casts a spotlight on your collaborative endeavors and partnerships, while the Moon graces your sign. The dynamic between the self (“I”) and the other (“thou”) takes center stage. This celestial event harkens back to significant religious moments: Moses’ Passover and Jesus’ Last Supper, both symbolic of emancipation and the conclusion of captivity. It’s worth noting that in 2024, the commemoration of Passover experiences a delay due to complications with the Lunar calendar.

Scorpio | The Moon lights up your imagination and gives you a rare window into your subconscious, past lifetime memories and skills and plots of hidden enemies. At the same time the Sun shines on your work and service, allowing you to push forward and bring to completion projects at work. This is the original Full Moon of Moses (Passover) and Jesus (Last Supper), a time of liberation and ending bondage. As mentioned before, Passover in 2024 is delayed due to issues with the Lunar calendar.

Sagittarius | The Sun lights up your creativity, romantic love, and connection to children, while the Moon shines on your friendships, organization, and organizations. However, there could be some conflicts between your children or lover’s need (prioritize) to those of your corporation, friends, or company, (less important). This is the original Full Moon of Moses (Passover) and Jesus (Last Supper), a time of liberation and ending bondage. As mentioned before, Passover in 2024 is delayed due to issues with the Lunar calendar.

Capricorn | The Sun illuminates facets like your abode, lineage, emotional tapestry, and security. Meanwhile, the Moon casts her glow on your career sphere. If caught at crossroad, home and family take precedence. This eclipse is the Full Moon of Moses (Passover) and Jesus (Last Supper), moments symbolizing liberation and transcendence. Note that Passover in 2024 witnesses a temporal shift due to lunar calendar nuances.

Aquarius | The Sun illuminates your intellect with innovative concepts and words, fostering growth in business and communication. The Moon amplifies your educational pursuits, philosophies, and could instigate travel, especially business-related. This eclipse corresponds Moses’ Passover and Jesus’ Last Supper – periods symbolic of emancipation and breaking free. Notably, 2024’s Passover encounters a monthlong delay due to lunar calendar intricacies.

Pisces | The Sun amplifies your financial sphere, talents, and capabilities, allowing you to dazzle brilliantly (akin to Aries’ gemstone, the diamond). The Moon, meanwhile, accentuates passions and intimacy. Opportunities may arise, but also potential conflicts between your aspirations and those of others loom large. This eclipse coincides with the Moses’ Passover Full Moon, and Jesus’ Last Supper – a period symbolic of freedom and transcendence. Note that Passover 2024 observance is postponed due to lunar calendar discrepancies.

WAYS TO PREPARE... The best way to work with the Moon is to follow her glow—like ducklings would trail their mama. Fourteen days after the New Moon, the Moon reaches her completion. This is the most emotional and potent period of the lunar cycle. Something has come to a completion, a resolution, or conclusion. If your wish has to do with releasing, letting go, or cutting out, then the Full Moon is the time to ritualize your wish by burning or burying something that represents what you wish to discard. You could try writing on one side of a piece of paper the reasons why you want or need your wish to come true, how your life could improve as well as how humanity could benefit from your success. On the other side of the page, write all the reasons why, until now, you couldn’t make this wish come true. Then burn the paper and throw the ashes into a water source (ocean, lake, river, or a bucket of water).

The Full Moon is also a time for practicing gratitude, meditation, and healing. There is a reason why Passover, the celebration of social and personal liberation takes place on the Full Moon as well as Wesak, the day the Buddha was born, died, and attained enlightenment.
As the Moon begins to shed her light, entering her waning stage, she will take the form of the letter C. Now begins the phase of ridding yourself of whatever hinders you in general or in connection to your wish. The waning moon is an opportune time to let go or dismiss someone out of your life or work, get rid of destructive attitudes, or embark on a detox journey.

A week after the Full Moon, the Lunar disk once again squares off with the Sun for the last time. This is the climax of your lunar journey—the showdown with your inner or outer antagonist. You might come across all forces—external and internal—that conspire to prevent you from manifesting your project. It is similar to the Buddha or Jesus’ three temptations before their moment of enlightenment. Be mindful that many quit just before the finish line.

A day before the next New Moon, if you chose the right wish and did all the work, you should experience a shift or change in your life, and you are ready to embark on the next lunar journey.

SIGNS THAT WILL FEEL IT THE MOST... Since the Moon is in Libra while the Sun in Aries, these two signs will feel it strongest and will be influenced by it. This lunation can be helpful for Leo, Sagittarius, Gemini, and Aquarius. The signs that might have a harder time are Cancer and Capricorn.

JOURNALING PROMPT... My relationships with my self versus others. Libra is the sign of partnerships, diplomacy, and law as well as beauty. It is the sign of “We” while Aries is about “I” and represents leadership, liberation, and autonomy. So this eclipse will quicken issues around I versus You. Also, the Moon in Libra in the Tarot is the two of swords which means “Peace.” It is a great time for cardio, meditation, breathwork, and art.

TRY NOT TO... lose your mind!

How Lynn Collins Of The Good Woo Reaches Her Optimum Functioning State With Healing Vibrations

lynn collins somavedic

somavedic emf mitigating device

SOME COULD ARGUE that actress Lynn Collins has seen life from both sides. Having starred in extremely well-known movies and TV shows like 13 Going on 30, The Merchant of Venice, John Carter, Wolverine, and True Blood, Lynn is no stranger to a world that orbits 16-hour set days and looking her best at all costs.

However, in 2012, Lynn finally hit her limit, falling victim to serious adrenal fatigue, perimenopause, Hashimotos, and a slew of other chronic health issues that left her with hormonal imbalances, hair loss, extra water weight, and a whole team of doctors searching for answers. Little did she know at the time, but her healing journey would lead her onto a new path of creating videos in the hopes of educating people who may have had similar problems with nowhere else to turn. And so was born The Good Woo, a physical and metaphysical practice that allows Lynn to work 1:1 with clients to unlock their optimum functioning state. Her goal: to be functional and practical, all while spreading the gospel about the modalities that have transformed her life and health at home.

One of the brands she cannot stop talking about is Somavedic and their lineup of EMF-mitigating, water structure-rebalancing devices. For those of you in need of a vibe check, EMF stands for Electromagnetic field. We dived deeper into Lynn's own journey, mission, approach, and tips for a more harmonious wellbeing and lifelong investment in one's health.

Lynn's Journey With Somavedic + Healing Vibrations

About The Good Woo: When I first started The Good Woo, my son was just a year old, and there were so many things I didn't know. Being a mom is one of those things that everyone just assumes you automatically have the answers to how to raise a child and keep them healthy. But in reality, none of us really know where to find all of these functional tools!

So, my very first video was all about water and how tap water is filled with heavy metals that can be a huge contributing factor to brain dysfunction, autism, dementia—the goes on and on. I discovered that, when your endocrine system is impacted, it can affect absolutely everything in the body—emotions and spirituality included. With so much fervor for what I was learning, I just kept building on my research, sharing how I was solving these problems in my everyday life.

The Good Woo is so many things, so it's hard to oversimplify it or whittle it down. I work with clients 1:1 on ways they can live holistically, practically, and functionally while also leaning on metaphysical practices. I'm also studying to be a mystic (I've been told I have psychic gifts that I assure you have been really annoying).

At the end of the day, The Good Woo is about the basics: is your water clean? Are you moving your body? How are you handling the inundation of stimulation in your day-to-day life? Our brains aren't built for that much intensity all of the time and there are emotional and physical ramifications because of it. What are you to do with all of those feelings?

My stance/passion for wellness overall: Health and wellness has to be at the forefront for everyone, where they're finding non-toxic ways to be healthy and mediate these issues. I originally embarked on this journey of healing and wanting to return to an optimum functioning state. and then I became a mother, which was amplified by one thousand because I was instantly thrown into a world of navigating, "What do I put in my child's body?!"

Once breastfeeding is over and whole foods begin, I really wanted to know how not to "toxify" my child with just the basic foundations of life. With wellness right now, it's an area of our lives that is most challenging because the goalposts are constantly changing based on what's good for you vs. what's not. All of these questions won't ever get you closer to a definitive answer unless you're doing the work yourself to try to figure out what works for your specific body. You always have to be an advocate for yourself and educate yourself in this ever-changing realm of health.

How energetics, metaphysics figure into my wellness interests: I am a huge fan of physics and metaphysics (I've read all of the difficult books!). I'm fascinated by theories that everything is vibration, that everything is frequency—even our thoughts and emotions. While this is overwhelming, it also means we're living in an energetic soup at all times, which puts the responsibility on us to mold how the energy around us flows.

If you consider that your home space should be an energetic sanctuary, then you have to first start from the idea that everything is vibrational and everything you do at home needs to create a sense of peace and calm within that space. I realized that I'm definitely a HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) who is sensitive to noise, light, all of it. I have to be careful not to get overly stimulated or would up, so it's been work for me to figure out how to keep things calm in my home, knowing that there are always going to be outside influences shaking up my balance.

As a results, I started working with essential oils and different kinds of light therapy, which was when Somavedic came into my life.

What the heck is the Somavedic? Somavedic creates an energetic frequency field that protects your space from any EMFs (or even bad attitudes), transmuting any toxin energy into something positive. There are thousands of studies showing the adverse effects of EMF on our bodies, so it's critical to have a cocoon to restore within.

The Somavedic also creates a frequency that can penetrate all matter. Did you know we're made up of around 80% of water? The Somavedic devices are able to charge water to return to its optimum cellular function, which means the same is happening for your blood and water cells in your body. With external factors like 5G, that have the ability to shake up toxic elements in the body, having something that can mitigate that frequency can be life-changing.

Somavedic is so hard to describe! What was your initial impression after using one – first hour, day? For me, I felt the effects of the Somavedic right away. I immediately dropped down into a less buzzy, less frenetic sensation. I let it charge for about half a day, then I really sat down with it to see how it affected me. I noticed that it transformed my ability to go deeply into meditation, and it 100% affected my sleep night one.

Initially, I didn't fall asleep right away. Be aware there is an adjustment period! Pre-Somavedic, I was perimenopausal—super lethargic and tired, needing naps throughout the day. The Somavedic actually increased energy that had potentially been suppressed. I was excited about how clear my mind felt and how alert I was, and even during the adjustment period, I never woke up feeling tired or ill-rested.

As the week went on, I also noticed that my son's sleep and focus greatly improved and was like, "Wow, they're really onto something here."

Be prepared to drink a lot of water during this adaptation period because there is for sure a detoxification effect. I also made sure to drink water that was being restructured by the device to help balance the frequencies.

Could you talk us through your experience on each of these factors?

Sleep: Before Somavedic, I wasn't able to have a full night's sleep. I would get up quite often. Now, I sleep through the night for about 8-9 hours per night/ I also notice my son rarely complains of being tired, which is a huge deal for parents.

Health/Physical Wellness: I have noticed a severe reduction in joint pain. The Somavedic also alerted me to things I needed to detox more deeply. Since I've started using the EMF-Effects Mitigating Device, I've been able to pinpoint that I need to do a heavy metal detox and parasite cleanse because the device is able to create such a vibration of homeostasis that you can very quickly spot the gaps. It's a commitment!

Energy/Mood: When you have this kind of release, things just feel calmer and smoother. I'm able to process things better, I've noticed my relationships have improve (even with my neighbors), and I find myself clocking that meetings are more productive in my home than outside or in my car.

What would you say has been the most compelling part of your Somavedic experience? Honestly as a parent, watching my son physically be able to come in from the outside world and feel that his home is a nurturing, vibrational space has been so rewarding. I see him calm down more easily and release anxiety, which has been a profound experience for me. I don't need ADHD medication or pharmaceuticals to help him find balance. It's been such a relief to feel that there is something natural that allows him to "drop in."

Is there anyone in particular you would recommend the Somavedic to? Parents, parents, parents. I think it's worthwhile to have one in your kids' room, one next to your water in the kitchen, one in your room, and then see what happens.

At the end of the day, I could talk about Somavedic all day long, but your journey to reclaiming wellness is a personal journey that will affect you specifically and individually. It comes back to hwere is your body at when you use these tools and how can you move forward to toward an optimum functioning state.

What would you say to someone who is skeptical about the Somavedic? Listen, I get it. It is a financial investment, but you are truly investing in long-term wellness. I can guarantee that the noise in our world is just going to increase, and the ability to create peaceful, healthy, clean homes will only become more challenging. You don't want to be a prisoner to dynamics or medications that are just going to cause more problems.

Somavedic eliminates so many toxic solutions to the basic problems we're all facing because we're getting inundated with stimulation and frequency every day. I think this kind of investment is worth it through and through—especially when it's about protecting your childrens' brains and how they're forming. At least I know I'm doing all I can to eliminate any negative effect to the best of my ability. And, worst case: the brand offers a 60-day, money-back guarantee, which means you can try it stress-free.

You also use the tiny travel / mini Somavedic while you’re out and about – tell us about that? There's a tiny, rechargeable keychain that I put in my sling bag when I go out. I can always tel when it needs to be recharged or when I don't have it. I definitely need more of them.

Anything else? What did we miss? Somavedic knows it's a huge investment for you, your family, and yourself. If you're not seeing results, you can easily send back your device for a full money-back guarantee. If you do see results, congrats. You've just taken a huge next step on investing in yourself, your wellness, and the vibration of what's around you.
