Mornings with Herbalist Adriana Ayales Of Anima Mundi

We've been sippin' on superfood lattes since way before it became a thing. If you're a devoted Chalkboard reader, chances are you've actually got a cup of something mushroomy or cacao-filled as you read this! If you're new to us and curious why a couple of your friends are now obsessed with things like reishi, herbs or adaptogens, Fall 2020 is definitely your time to try a few stress-busting, immune-boosting concoctions...

Meet Adriana Ayales, the clinical herbalist behind NYC's Anima Mundi, a shop filled with wild-crafted ancient remedies made accessible -- and pretty cool. Adriana is one of our go-to pros in the space, always ready with a recommendation for herbs that suit what we're going through right now.

We spent the morning with Adriana and asked her to walk us through her daily routine and to share more about her passion to bring ancient herbs to the modern woman...

Name: Adriana Ayales

Business: Anima Mundi (meaning: "the soul of nature")

Living in… Costa Rica (and often NYC).

Mornings usually begin with… A 30-40 minute meditation in nature, or outside somewhere. Followed by a frothy cup.

Ideal morning drink: My first morning latte is usually a golden milk with the uplifting magic of Mucuna, along with the immune protective energizing powers of Cordyceps, and a dash of our Rose power or Dirty Rose Chai Collagen Booster. All frothed up with delicious homemade coconut milk.

Yum. We're obsessed with Dirty Rose Chai Collagen Booster! It's so unique, tell us about it?

Some of my favorite flavors are rose and chai spices -- particularly cinnamon and cardamom. And we thought it would be a brilliant combo, as these spices assist digestion. Beauty comes from the inside out and digestion is a big part of that. That's a very important part of what we believe and teach. Chai spices are carminative and assist in metabolizing the stronger collagen-boosting herbs within the formula, like He Shou Wu and Horsetail. The formula also contains powerful digestive aids, Mangosteen pericarp and Gynostemma that aid skin health, longevity and more.

It's a tough time. What's been your biggest sanity saver lately? Listening to visualized meditations as I go on a hike or walk somewhere. LIFE SAVING.

Current mantra: Love is life. Love is the greatest state of receivership, the more we can attune to the frequency of love, the more we can access higher states of consciousness.

Can you share 3 herbs that you recommend for newbies? And a bit about why?

Mucuna, a powerful brain herb that you actually feel elevated from. It is often called the "dopamine bean" because it contains the precursor to dopamine, L-Dopa. Very helpful for those seeking to uplift themselves, and sharpen their senses. Especially during these trying times, people are experiencing depression and anxiety at unprecedented levels and Mucuna is a natural antidepressant due to its effect in increasing dopamine levels. We offer it as a powder for drinks or also in our Happiness Tonic which is a tincture.

Blue Lotus, as it’s a very soothing flower that decompresses the nervous system, and also grants its mystical powers. It's also absolutely stunning -- you have to see to believe. Blue Lotus is often called the "flower of intuition". We make it as a tea and it's one of my favorites.

Reishi, a very safe and non-toxic mushroom that greatly assists the immune system, while also curbing our stress response (which is something that many of us have now-a-days). It’s a wonderful herb to drink before bed to calm the mind and relax the nerves. We’re only beginning to scratch the surface of all the health benefits of Reishi. Our Reishi comes as a powder and just a teaspoon can be added to coffee, coconut milk or whatever you like.

It seems there's a growing interest in herbs and wellness protocols that appeal to our more grounded, intuitive nature. Why do you think that's so?

We’re returning to our source. Herbalism is ancient medicine, and I feel that collectively we are all seeking what we are indigenous to. The rituals and ceremonial aspects surrounding herbalism, food and wellness overal, thin the veil between us in today’s world, and our origin. Through these ancient rituals we can access a very sacred aspect to our source.

Within the last 100-150 years many have lost their connection to their heritage, and the separation that the more westernized lifestyle has created is now creating a deep need for belonging. On another level, the planet is requiring our attention, and rekindling to it’s soul, and sustainable practices like herbalism and grassroots wellness tends to the needs of the planet directly. This is contributing to the fundamentals of our body, and the planet.

Tell me a couple things you wish skeptics knew about herbs and their use. Many people are "pharma or bust"...

If it weren’t for herbs and blueprints detected by scientists within plants, many popular medicines like aspirin, quinine, penicillin and anticancer drugs would have perhaps never been designed or created!

For example, Ancient Sumerians used willow, a salicylate-rich plant that foreshadowed modern aspirin. Digitalis was used by the ancient Romans long before William Withering wrote about its use for heart failure. South American natives discovered that cinchona bark, a source of quinine, was an effective treatment for malaria. There are many early herbal remedies that were, and are, used as templates for modern pharmaceuticals.

So, who walks into the doors of Anima Mundi in New York? Has it changed?

So many different kinds of people of all walks of life come to visit. And we love it! We thankfully have been very busy and our store has a lot of consistent traffic, practicing social distancing and hygienic protocols. We still follow our original vision of being like a healthy version of the bar, 'Cheers' with masks and all, to really create a safe space for folks to learn, educate on plants and see how they can upgrade aspects of their life by using a natural form of healthcare.

Our most popular drink lately has been our third eye lattes with Ceremonial Matcha, Moringa, Blue Lotus tea, dusted with Mucuna.

In 2020, so many of us have faced anxieties or stresses we've never faced before. What are your best tips as an herbalist?

This year I have practiced self care rigorously, like never before. Really taking the time to nourish the body by doing medicinal baths, clay masks with relaxing essential oils, foot baths in dense medicinal teas. Doing whole body gua sha and dry brushing to amp up the lymphatic system (really helped me with quarantine frustration!), followed by a fresh infused herbal oil from whatever is in the garden. This year for example, I made a parsley, thyme and calendula body oil, because there was just so much of it in the garden. And I thoroughly rubbed down by body after dry brushing to increase circulation, and re-hydrate the pores with relaxing and nutrient dense herbs. Remember that you can do this with whatever is abundant around you, or at a farmers market. Fresh dry your plants and infuse!

And of course herbal teas for emotional and mental health, like adaptogens to beat the root of stress as much as possible. ‘Happy herbs’ like St John’s Wort, Albizia and Lemon Balm can be found in our Happiness Tonic. Mood uplifters like our heirloom Cacao and Mucuna are essential.

You just launched skincare with the Collagen Booster Face Oil -- and you guys can't keep it in stock! I understand why. Tell us about the new endeavor...

It’s always been a big dream to create truly medicinal bodycare. The beauty industry, even a lot of the ‘natural’ products, are often diluted with unfiltered water and mineral oils or contain ingredients that aren’t really that natural. Even some of the companies that claim “Natural” are made with toxic chemicals that are banned in other countries which can cause major health problems in the long run. My goal was to create something that’s not only nourishing for the skin and body but also healing.

Our oil is slow-extracted in jojoba using researched skin loving and collagen protecting plants like He Shou Wu, Nettle Root, Helichrysum, Calendula, Rose and many, many more. We also absolutely love using very nutrient dense oils that are very friendly to many skin types, like Chia and Rosehip. And, last but not least, scented with organic essential oils that are actually very medicinal themselves too.

I believe that a key aspect to having truly healthy skin is using truly natural products. Unadulterated beauty products, like face oils, shampoos, lotions (etc.) will actually help your hair and skin significantly, and not create skin and health issues or dependency.

Editor's Note:  The Collagen Booster Face Oil is included in our exclusive 20% off offer this week! Adriana has barely been able to keep it on shelves, so here's hoping it will be available!

Why does herbalism have such a close association with "magic" and spirituality? Is it because, historically speaking, the herbs were used intuitively before the science was available to validate them?

Great question! The medicine practiced by indigenous peoples around the world was very intuitive.

"In all traditions, the body wasn’t separate from the mind. In all traditions that I’ve studied from, the soul is a key aspect to diagnosis."

If you talk to curanderos or “shamans,” for example, their information has been handed down for hundreds if not thousands of years. And to this day, they ‘download’ information by connecting to the plants’ intelligence, which is how they explain this information came to them to begin with. And in this same way they heal their patients, they attune to the frequency of their patient, and receive the information needed to facilitate the healing experience.

Lastly, what do you think the biggest misconceptions are about herbalism?

That it’s unsafe. One of my favorite aspects about herbs is that it has thousands of years of anecdotal evidence. And although a lot is not medically validated, or researched, it creates the ideas that it isn’t safe.

Indigenous medicine is ancient, and this is our greatest vision, bridging the gap between ancient systems of medicine to modern day needs. Plant medicine is also typically more gentle and gradual than man made drugs, which is easier on the system, but also people are more likely to give up on it too soon. For results it’s best to integrate them into your life regularly and over a lifetime.

"You can’t expect to exercise for a week and be fit
your whole life - the same goes for using herbs."

It’s a self-care and preventative healthcare system that should be incorporated on a regular basis. Be patient and the effects will be apparent.

All About Halloween’s Full Moon In Taurus 2020 This Weekend

A full moon. On Halloween. In 2020. It's a lot. And we're breaking it all down for you to digest with crystal healer, meditation guide and reiki master, Mariah K. Lyons, whose newly published, Crystal Healing for Women is the perfect resource for weeks just like this.

Follow Mariah for more deeply feminine and grounding insights to help us travese this year in balance and a deep connection to ourselves through the highs and the lows bound to come...

All About The Full Moon In Taurus 2020

SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE… This Halloween, October 31st, not only do we have a Full Moon -- something that only occurs on Halloween every 19 years -- we also have a Blue Moon, a rare event attributing to the phrase “once in a blue moon” when 2 full moons occur within the same month.

The Full Moon in Taurus will be visible in all time zones globally, something that hasn’t happened on Halloween since 1944. The significance of this Full Moon is greatly amplified, supporting release, transformation and finding completion to create anew.

October 31st has long been celebrated for thousands of years as a time where the “veils between worlds” are thin. Modern day Halloween celebrations have roots from the ancient Celtic celebration of Samhain, which marked the end of the Celtic year and honored the beginning of a new year. Samhain is a time of remembering one’s ancestors, lessons and gifts of the year while also warding off and releasing negative spirits into the underworld.

This is a time for going within and honoring what challenges we have overcome, what we can bring to completion and for gaining clarity on what we want to create in our lives moving forward.

OVERALL THEMES TO EXPLORE… Completion. Release. Transformation. Creation. What is ready to come to completion to make space for the new? How can you let go of past regrets, grudges, experiences and anything you may be holding onto that is preventing you from moving forward? What is it you wish to see different in your life and in the world? What are tiny steps you can take to create big changes down the road?

My new book Crystal Healing for Women contains a wonderful meditation for this full moon called 'Inner Reflection and Reinvention Ritual' that is highly supportive through phases of transformation by helping one to gain insight and clarity during times of change.

HOW YOU MAY FEEL… Highly emotional, frustrated, confused, curious, internal, intuitive, inquisitive, dreamy, spacy, overwhelmed, creative.

We are still in Mercury Retrograde and with this moon conjunct Uranus, truly anything could happen. It is a destructive energy, one that creates transformation and endings, and we may be feeling this intensity in all aspects of our lives especially around relationships, career, finances and environment.

Allow this energy to transform what is no longer resonating into a new expression that excites you. While the “veils are lifted” you are able to see clearly what is working and what is not and begin to imagine and visualize the life you wish to experience. Let it be fun and creative, working with the energy to amplify and activate new visions of your reality.

an EXCELLENT TIME TO…  Spend time in nature -- allowing the body and mind to center and ground. It is a wonderful time to journal and take stock of what you have learned this year, and allow your intuition and creativity to take flight as you imagine and visualize what you want to create in your life. If you find yourself emotionally spiraling down with the intensity of this moon, then punch pillows, dance in your living room, have a laugh with a friend or go for a walk around the block and let the energy simply move you into a higher vibration.

JOURNALING PROMPT…'What am I ready to bring to completion? What are experiences from the past can I release and let go? What have I learned this year? What is it that I want to make space for in to bring into my life in regards to relationships, career, finances and health? Am I allowing enough space in my life to truly reflect upon my goals, wishes, desires and dreams? Who do I want to be when I come out of this transformative time?'

The Smart Girls’ Guide To Home Renovation: 10 Do’s And Don’ts From Somone Who’s Tried It All

There's really nothing like a good home "before and after". With all of us at home more often, perhaps you're hoping to tackle a small home project or wondering if you can finally install that hardware or appliance you've been dreaming of. The key, according to renovation renegade, Claire Thomas, is in knowing your own boundaries. We asked Claire to define the projects she thinks of as workable DIYs versus those you should definitely hire a professional for and she dished out the below with experienced clarity!
See Claire's projects like Sweet Laurel Bakery, the Kitchy Cabin and Oeste Home!

5 renovations you can and should
ACTUALLY take on...

Painting! You can do it, but do it right. Tape everything off, get the right equipment, put on a podcast and block out the whole day.

Switching out hardware. Changing up drawer pulls and knobs can completely change the look of a kitchen, bathroom, or old piece of furniture. Go for it!

Cabinetry. It's time consuming, but with companies like Semihandmade, you can build IKEA boxes and install fresh cabinets for very little money.

Floating shelves. The kitchen shelves and the bar were both DIY projects Yayo (my business partner for Oeste Home) took on. They took about a day to do, and turned out fabulous.

A Fountain! Yayo's parents installed an epic hillside fountain with items from Home Depot in one weekend. It's now the highlight of the lower patio, with bunnies, road runners, quail, and squirrels using it as a watering hole.

5 renovations you should
ACTUALLY hire a professional for...

Anything electrical. Get a licensed pro for this.
Anything that can kill you. Maybe don't climb on your roof today?

Plumbing. If there's a chance you'll accidentally flood your home, skip it.

Tile. Ok, maybe I'm just a little traumatized because I'm so bad at it, but unless you are comfortable using a tile saw and are really good at math -- skip it.

Appliance installation. There's also a bit of self protection here. If you use a pro you keep the warranty and if anything goes wrong, they'll fix it.

Grain-Free Party Mix, Ghee Snack Packs + Seed Butter Energy Balls

Danielle Walker is the queen of grain-free cooking and, when we asked her for a fall snack recipe, she delivered big time! We're swooning for these three fun snacks, all gluten and grain-free.

The caramel snack packs are deliciously indulgent, the party mix is the perfect thing to have in your back pocket for hungry kids (or roommates), and these energy balls are our new go-to...

Snacking can be difficult on a grain-free diet, for kids and adults alike. Of course, fruit and vegetables are always quick and nutritious snacks, but sometimes we all hanker for something that feels a little bit more indulgent. You might recognize the recipes that follow as being inspired by the snacks you knew and loved growing up.

Melted Ghee Party Mix
(makes 4 cups)

Ingredients:
¼ cup ghee
5 ounces Plaintain chips
1cup whole unroasted almonds
½ cup raw sunflower seeds
½ cup pepitas
1 ½ tablespoons coconut aminos
1 teaspoon pure maple syrup
1 teaspoon fish sauce
1/4 teaspoon freshly squeezed lime juice
1 ¼ teaspoons fine sea salt
¾ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon sweet paprika
¼ teaspoon onion powder
¼ teaspoon chili powder

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 250 F.

Melt the ghee in a saucepan over low heat. Stir in the coconut aminos, maple syrup, fish sauce, lime juice, salt, garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, and chili powder. Turn off the heat, then add the plantain chips, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, and pepitas and stir until evenly coated. Spread the party mix in a single layer on a large rimmed baking sheet.

Bake for 90 minutes, stirring every 20 to 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and let the baking sheet cool on a wire rack. The nuts will look slightly wet when removed from the oven but will continue to dry out as they cool.

Store the completely cooled mix in an airtight container at room temperature for 1 month.

Butterscotch Snack Packs
(serves 4)

Ingredients:
3 tablespoons ghee or unsalted grass-fed butter
½ cup coconut sugar
¼ cup pure maple syrup
1 vanilla bean, halved lengthwise and seeds scraped out
½ cup full-fat coconut milk
3 egg yolks
2 ½ tablespoons arrowroot powder
¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
1 ½ cups cashew milk, warmed
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Whipped cream, for serving
Shaved dark chocolate, for serving

Directions:
Melt the ghee in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the coconut sugar, maple syrup, and the vanilla bean pod and seeds and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, whisking frequently, until bubbling. Don’t let the mixture smoke or burn. Whisk in the coconut milk and cook for 2 minutes more, until thickened slightly. Remove the pan from the heat.

In a small bowl, whisk the egg yolks, arrowroot, and salt into the warmed cashew milk, then whisk the egg mixture into the pan. Return the pan to the stove over medium heat and cook for 3 to 4 minutes more, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens and a path is left when a spoon is drawn through the pudding.

Remove the pan from the heat, discard the vanilla bean pod, and stir in the vanilla extract. Divide the pudding among four 8-ounce jars and press plastic wrap directly on top of the pudding surfaces. Refrigerate for 2 hours, until set and fully chilled.

Store the set pudding in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 days.

Serve topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

Seed Butter Energy Balls
(makes 12)

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup golden flaxseeds
  • 1 cup unsweetened sunflower seed butter
  • ½ cup light-colored raw honey
  • 15 small pitted dates
  • 3 tablespoons raw cacao powder
  • 2 tablespoons coconut flour
  • 2 tablespoons unflavored collagen peptides powder or protein powder of your choice
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ½ cup chopped dark chocolate (80% cacao)
  • Fine sea salt
  • Cocoa powder or finely shredded unsweetened coconut, for rolling

Directions:

Place the flaxseed in a food processor and process until finely ground. Add the sunflower seed butter, honey, dates, cacao powder, coconut flour, collagen peptides, and vanilla and process until smooth. Stir in the chocolate and a pinch of salt. Remove the blade and chill the mixture in the fridge for 30 minutes.

Place the cocoa powder or shredded coconut on a plate. Roll the chilled mixture into 1-inch balls, and roll each ball in the topping until coated.

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 1 week, or in the freezer for 6 months. Eat straightaway; or, if you prefer, defrost at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving.

Welcome To Your Crisis: How Jen Aniston’s Intuitive Is Helping Us Deal With 2020

Here we are, mid-2020 and leaning on mental health coaches like Laura Day big time. It just so happens that Jen and Brad -- as well as Chopra and Dyer -- all vouch for Laura's usefulness which, while not increasing her legitimacy, does actually peak our interest big time.

In her books, Practical Intuition and Welcome To Your Crisis, Laura lays out just the kind of perspective we need lately and we asked her to outline crisis and the way we deal with it for us all below...

Take a moment and think about your greatest achievements. What preceded them?

Chances are it was a transition or loss not directly of your own choosing. You outgrew a school, someone left, you lost something important that you had counted on in your life or even something more profoundly personal – your health, for example, or your financial or social standing.

Nobody wants to be in crisis. Yet crisis is often followed by miracles. You spend most of your energy and attention maintaining the structures of your life: work, health, relationship, finances, and so on. Changing these structures in an evolutionary way is hard, because it goes against our instincts. Mammals hate change.

"Nobody wants to be in crisis. Yet crisis is often followed by miracles."

The word “crisis” comes from the Greek verb krinein, “to decide.” Unfortunately, real crisis usually overwhelms our ability to decide anything using our known strategies, and regression follows. Regression is when the messy, impulsive subconscious “you” takes over for the mature and conscious you, compounding the problem rather than using it as the golden opportunity for creating your dreams that it really is.

In order to deal with the trouble you make for yourself in crisis, the first thing you need to know is your reaction style. There are four styles by which people react to crisis. You have elements of each in your normal functioning, but when you regress and “lose it,” you revert to the same reaction style you had when you were in nursery school.

What is your Crisis Reaction Type?
(Yep, It's a Thing)

The following are descriptions of each reaction style. When you “lose it,” which type are you?

ANGER TYPE

Does your Anger drive you to rage, blaming, paranoia, and shame, and in your impulsivity cause you to create more hostility and problems?

ANXIETY TYPE

Does your Anxiety lead you to obsess, seek reassurance, and hyper-focus on problems, jumping ahead in your terrified predictions to an irredeemable future while not addressing the real problems that exist now?

DEPRESSION TYPE

Does Depression immobilize you as you passively watch your life unravel and your challenges build to unmanageable proportions?

DENIAL TYPE

Does Denial lead you to distract yourself and get blindsided by problems that have grown into monsters because they’ve gone undetected?

When you notice that you are in a reactive instead of an active or proactive state, something needs to change.

A Help For Each 'Crisis Reaction Type'...

Anger Type: Discharge the charge before reacting. Take a five-mile run before doing anything, so that you can channel the amazing passion and energy that anger types have into rebuilding – and motivating others to join you by adding their passion to your goals. Energy is the gift of Anger.

Anxiety Type: As much as it may seem threatening to do so, take a distraction break from the problem and engage in an activity that has a clear beginning, middle, and end. This will allow you to use the same acute hyper-vigilance and awareness that are scaring you in order to find solutions, even precognitively, that others don’t have access to. Awareness is the gift of Anxiety.

Depression Type: Have a small, productive goal and ask for support to accomplish it. Then you can use your Depth to mine opportunities that others would miss and reveal to others how they benefit from coming on board with you. Depth is the gift of Depression.

Denial Type: Do something that encourages you to feel. Talk to your mom. Hug your child. Watch cat videos or comedy or a commercial that brings tears to your eyes. When you reconnect with your feelings instead of avoiding them, you can filter out distraction and use your gift of Effectiveness to put your life together in the way you choose. Effectiveness is the gift of Denial.

Every type can turn crisis into opportunity using the following four pillars:

The 4 Pillars of Opportunity From Crisis

Let Go: Rumination, recrimination, and regret are all ways of holding on to a reality that no longer exists. Discipline yourself to redirect all thought and action to a single new, positive goal. Give yourself a specific, small amount of time each day to mourn, rage, and obsess, but then redirect your attention to what is and what can be.

Take Positive Action: In crisis, you may see many of your normal supports and routines torn from you. You may not know how to adapt to the new terrain – or even want to – but you must if you are going to mine the opportunities. Don’t think ahead or behind. Address the problems and opportunities in this moment, no matter how insignificant they may seem, and you will find yourself in an exciting new world.

No New Damage: When old ways of surviving (no matter how dysfunctional they were) are ripped from you, every bit of your energy and attention is needed to thrive. Stay away from habits, thoughts, people, and situations that may bring new damage to your life, yourself, or your self-esteem. Guard yourself jealously. Know that every time you engage in new damage you give away a part of your dreams.

Make Deposits to Your Emotional Bank Account: Remember, you are an elegant machine. You need to restock the currency of love, pleasure, beauty, and meaning in order to thrive. In crisis, limit expenditures and cultivate deposits.

Remember. FEAR has two meanings: Fear Everything And Run or Face Everything And Rise

The 10 Worst Halloween Candies To Avoid (Sorry, Not Sorry)

Most of us are getting accustomed to facing the facts on processed foods and their creepy ingredients. Sure, we're all for a treat now and then, like a packaged pastry or candy bar we grew up with, but for the most part our taste buds -- and brain cells -- have learned to move after learning too much about what's in those "franken-foods".

Here Dr. Josh Axe breaks down what's up on the candy aisle. To be honest, we rarely name brand names like this on TCM, but we trust Axe and team and think these details are worth sharing here (especially this Halloween week!). The good news? We've got tons of ideas for really good homemade almond butter cups and clean candy or Brunchpants' chocolate-covered fruit (shown above), plus a few ideas about which storebought candies are best

According to the National Retail Federation, Americans are estimated to spend around $2.6 billion on candy annually, which equates to an average of $25.37 per person. Not only that, but the average Halloween candy haul reportedly contains up to 7,000 calories, which is the equivalent of approximately 28 hamburgers, 25 slices of pizza or 36 chocolate donuts.

So why do many of us find it so difficult to scale back on the Halloween treats? For starters, almost all classic Halloween candies are jam-packed with added sugar, making them some of the post prominent hidden sugar foods.

It’s no secret that sugar can be highly addictive. It activates the reward centers in the brain, which causes increased cravings and makes it much harder to cut out your favorite candy cold turkey. In fact, much like other “addictions,” giving up sweets can cause a slew of sugar withdrawal symptoms, including headaches, fatigue, nausea and more, as you attempt to overcome your sugar addiction.

However, the amount of sugar crammed into the most popular Halloween candies isn’t the only reason you might have some difficulty slashing back on the Halloween snacks.

Some research suggests that filling up on fatty foods can have a similar impact on the pathways in the brain as sugar, causing people to eat for pleasure rather than hunger and throwing off the body’s ability to regulate hormones that affect hunger and appetite, such as ghrelin and leptin.

Check out almost any of the foods found on the top 10 best Halloween candy list and you’ll notice that almost all are pumped full of both sugar and fat. This combination is perfect for fueling cravings and overeating.

Not only that, but Halloween is a holiday that many associate with positive memories and nostalgia, which can rewire our brains to link Halloween candies to happiness and pleasure. For example, you might find yourself craving a specific type of candy because of the experiences you associate it with rather than the actual candy itself.

Fortunately, making a few smart swaps and practicing a bit of mindful eating can obliterate overeating and help you keep your candy consumption under control.

The 10 Worst Halloween Candies To Avoid

1. Skittles | Skittles are a front-runner on the list of top 10 worst Halloween candies, and for good reason. In addition to being packed full of food additives and questionable ingredients, they also contain hydrogenated oils — also known as trans fats — which can quickly crank up cholesterol levels.

2. Crunch Bars | Made up primarily of milk chocolate and crisped rice, Crunch Bars are one of the highest calorie candy bars on the market. In fact, just four of the mini fun-sized bars contain a whopping 205 calories, 23 grams of sugar and 11 grams of fat.

3. Sour Patch Kids | These sweet and sour snacks are often considered one of the worst candies for you, thanks to both their addictive flavor and high levels of acid, which can erode tooth enamel and contribute to cavity formation.

4. Candy Corn | Not only has candy corn been dubbed the worst Halloween candy of 2019 based on a survey published by CandyStore.com, but it’s also one of the worst when it comes to your health. Besides bringing little to the table apart from added sugar and calories, it’s also full of highly refined, processed and artificial ingredients, all of which you’re better off without.

5. Starburst | This fruit-flavored snack is full of some of the worst ingredients that can take a toll on your health, including an artificial food coloring known as Red 40. This dangerous dye actually contains benzidene, a carcinogenic compound that could contribute to cancer formation.

6. 3 Musketeers | Lurking in these tasty candy bars is a hearty dose of hydrogenated oils, or trans fats. In addition to clogging your arteries and contributing to heart disease, trans fats have also been linked to a higher risk of obesity, diabetes and certain types of cancer as well.

7. Snickers | Although it may be one of the most popular candy bars on the market, Snickers also rank as one of the top 20 worst Halloween candies when it comes to nutrition profile. With layers of nougat, caramel, peanuts and milk chocolate packed into each bar, Snickers are high in calories, sugar and fat, all of which can do some serious damage when it comes to both your dental health and your waistline.

8. M&Ms | Brimming with artificial food dyes and flavorings, M&Ms are a small snack that can have a big impact on health. Additionally, although fun-sized packs are available to help promote portion control, most standard sizes contain up to three ingredients in a single bag.

9. Twix | With 14 grams of fat, 28 grams of sugar and nearly 300 calories per serving, it’s no wonder Twix is considered one of the worst Halloween candies available. And unfortunately, despite popular belief, it doesn’t matter if you prefer the right or left side of the Twix bar — both are equally bad for your health.

10. Reese’s Peanut Butter Pumpkins | No list of candy would be complete without this beloved Halloween favorite. However, this classic candy is not known for its health benefits, and seasonal shapes are actually even worse in terms of nutrition.

For instance, while a typical Reese’s cup contains around 87 calories, 8 grams of sugar and 5 grams of fat, one serving of Reese’s Peanut Butter Pumpkins clocks in at 170 calories, 17 grams of sugar and 10 grams of fat.

Just because you’re trying to eat healthy doesn’t mean you need to give up everything on your favorite Halloween candies list. Instead, opt for healthier alternatives, and keep your portion sizes in check to enjoy the occasional indulgence without sacrificing your health.

Dark chocolate, for instance, is a good alternative to milk chocolate because it’s higher in heart-healthy antioxidants and polyphenols that can help fight free radical damage and protect against disease — and those are just some of the benefits of dark chocolate. Be sure to also swap the full-sized candy bars for miniatures to satisfy your sweet tooth without going overboard.

Lower Calorie Candy Options: Other novelty Halloween candies like Tootsie Pops, Dum Dums and Jolly Ranchers are relatively low in fat and calories and take longer to eat than other candies, which can help slow you down and prevent a binge.

Vegan Halloween Candies: Smarties, Twizzlers and Mike & Ikes are also all vegan Halloween candy options that are lower in calories than other types of candy and typically pre-packaged in smaller servings to keep your candy consumption in check and help you avoid the worst Halloween candy.

The Best Homemade Candy: Explore our ridiculously good guide to DIY Halloween candy from juice gummies to s'mores cups and almond butter cups to upgrade your holiday!

I Tried the New Skincare Trend With 800+ Five Star Reviews

We see so many clean beauty products. You really can't imagine. And while it's a major job perk on one hand, on the other, there are only so many square inches of skin per skincare product to go around. Imagine stepping in to Sephora and being able to use anything you want -- exciting? Yes -- until you realize that all that marketing and glossy packaging doesn't always add up to real-life results and there are really only a couple handfuls of special products that deserve space on your face.

We've seen it all, tried most of it and have a short list of tried-and-true 'best in category' clean beauty favorites at this point, but, as the industry is still growing like gangbusters we still feel compelled to keep testing and finding the best new products to share with you as they hit the shelves.

Enter Prima's Night Magic, an intensive facial oil from a new brand we'd come to know and trust early on (Prima co-founder Christopher Gavigan was Jessica Alba's Honest co-founder and was featured in one of our very first homepage stories!) with over eight hundred five-star reviews.

Truthfully, consumer reviews don't always stop us in our tracks. We see a lot of beauty products early in their launch phase and can usually tell if a product has this kind of viral potential right off the bat before it gets all those stars. But we were already loving Prima's CBD capsules (20% off for readers too!) and knew they were immaculately sourced, so when we heard about Night Magic's growing buzz in our own wellness community here in L.A. we had to get our hands on it right away.

If you're new to us... you might not realize the obvious: as a wellness site, we are 'clean' beauty only and always. You can eat all the kale you want, but if you're using toxic beauty products, what's the point? Personal care products are a key part of our daily wellness routines and skincare matters to us the most!

The Review: Why
Does Our Skin Feel So Good?

So, Night Magic's packaging says that it's an 'intensive facial oil'. We've tried all the oils and one thing many of them have in common is such a rich brew of potent ingredients that they can be too active for sensitive or reactive skin. Many skincare oils are designed for women with mature skin who are just looking to soften wrinkles, but we're usually looking for something more balanced and not so rich that your skin is essentially basting in it all night. Oils that are too rich or too active can actually clog or irritate skin types that aren't dry and aging.

My skin loved Night Magic from the first application and the oil sank right into my skin. One reason for that, after closer inspection, is that Prima's blend of super-rich oils and active botanicals like prickly pear, moringa, avocado, and kukui oils are layered into a base of calming and nourishing jojoba oil -- a skincare ingredient that nearly matches the makeup of the oils in our own skin. While jojoba is probably the least "exciting" ingredient in the product, I think it's why my skin was able to respond so well and absorb the more "impressive" active ingredients!

After using Prima's Night Magic for just a few days, I felt the glow coming on, as promised by their impressive clinical trials (which included calmer, more radiant skin for 90% of participants). Here's why:

+ Less redness: Everyone's recent obsession, hemp seed oil is the ingredient I credit the oil's calming and anti-redness benefits. CBD is deeply anti-inflammatory. My skin looked and, more importantly, felt calmer after using Night Magic and if you rifle through those reviews you'll see lots of notes along the same lines! Hemp seed oil can also have a major impact on breakouts calming the skin and reducing inflammation where skin is the most irritated.

+ Absorbable richness: Chia and marula oils together deliver a full spectrum of omega fatty acids 3, 6 and 9. Some of clean beauty's most luxe (and expensive) oils are made from these two oils. Most of those products are way too rich for my sensitive, combination skin on their own, but blended into Night Magic they soak right in and now I'm reaping their benefits in a more absorbable form.

+ Antioxidant action:  CBD, prickly pear, moringa, avocado, and kukui oils are actual superfoods for the skin -- so rich in essential fatty acids, antioxidants and minerals. If the hemp and omega oils are retaining the moisture and quality of the skin I have, I like to think of these antioxidant-rich oils as the actives that are working ahead, preventing future damage. They are all rich in vitamins A, C, and E which protect the skin and prevent free-radical damage to skin cells.

I thought the oil was really great. Then I chatted with Prima co-founder Jessica Assaf who told me that, while I could use the oil on it's own, I was missing out on the best skin of my life if I wasn't layering the oil on top of the cream. I paused, adjusted my imaginary skincare-nerd glasses and asked her to tell me everything....

Skincare Layering
Demystified

Do you use an oil or a cream on your skin? Lots of brands will tell you it's either/or: you're either Camp Cream or Camp Oil and there's not going back and forth between. What I knew is that, since I try so many products, I usually wavered between both and wanted the benefits of each at different times.

Layering skincare products can be a total mystery -- it was to me, until Jessica (her skin, guys! Watch the video...) walked me through the Prima Power Trio (yes, they actually call it that) of Night Magic, The Afterglow -- a cream, and Enlightenment Serum.

https://youtu.be/1M06M-m2mcM

I was concerned that this was way too much product for my skin, until she walked me through the routine and we talked about how the triple dose of nutrients had dramatically healed her own skin. I saw just how little of each product was actually needed to layer correctly so that all the product absorbed effortlessly into the skin. This is a big mistake a lot of skincare aficionados make! Well-crafted clean beauty products are a self-care investment and, used right, they should actually last you a really long time!

I can't not layer now and the evening ritual of light serum, just a touch of the light cream warmed on the fingertips and patted in, and then the oil over the top to seal it all in has my skin feeling as balanced, nourished, calm and happy as I've noticed in the entire year of trying some of the best new clean skincare products out there.

Watch Jessica share the layering routine with Prima's Power Trio; Enlightenment Serum, The Afterglow and Night Magic above. Grab the Trio for an exclusive offer of 20% off to try the clean beauty phenomenon for yourself.

Have questions about our experience? Drop them in the comments below or cruise through Prima's reviews to see how other users felt about the products! While you're shopping, note that 20% off applies to all Prima products. Shop their best-selling CBD capsules, The Daily, their Bath Butter or effervescent CBD Bath Bomb while you're at it!

Robin Williams’ Son On Mental Health + The Inspiration Behind His New Endeavor

When the world lost beloved actor and comedian, Robin Williams a few years ago it took a toll on many of us, but none more than his immediate family. It seems that when celebrated performers like Williams suffers in such a public way there's a strange instinct in many of us to want to care for them and their families as though they were our own neighbors.

Zak Williams is Robin's son and is turning his own journey through grief into a potent conversation on mental illness that matters more now than ever before. He is also the co-founder of the new PYM, which means 'Prepare Your Mind' and is also his middle name. PYM is a brand of new mental health supports including the Original Mood Chew, a gummy made to manage feelings of stress, overwhelm and anxiety on the spot. The adaptogen-based chews are all-natural, non-addictive and non-psychoactive -- and caught our eye as soon as they hit our in-box.
We asked Zak and research psychiatrist and mental health advocate, Dr. Raghu Appasani to tell us more about the product and the new endeavor. This story is not sponsored.

Suzanne Hall: Zak, first of all, we already truly love the PYM chews -- we'll talk about that more below. Talk to us about what inspired you to launch the product?

Zak Williams: After my dad took his life in August of 2014, my anxiety went into overdrive. I found myself depressed, anxious, traumatized, and unable to cope with daily life. As I went about trying to heal and piece my life back together, I found myself trying to treat the chronic stress and anxiety I had with alcohol and cannabis. These bandaids left me numb, disconnected, and addicted, and I was nowhere near happy and not feeling like the best version of myself, so I stopped self-medicating and got sober, but I still didn’t feel like my best self.

Through months of research, I discovered that there are a wealth of botanical adaptogens and amino acid complexes that can help recalibrate our bodies and brains so that we can heal ourselves.

I asked myself why nobody knew of these compounds and why they were so hard to find. I finally found something that actually made me feel okay and helped me not just get through the day, but actually thrive. I spent the next two years innovating on these compounds, exploring taste, bioavailability, and accessibility to create a safe, natural, delicious, and most importantly, effective anxiety and stress relief product.

"I asked myself why nobody knew of these compounds
and why they were so hard to find."

SH: These are some of my personal favorite adaptogens as well and we've talked about them a lot on TCM. Did you have any experience with these herbs before formulating the product?

ZW: Yes, I found all these compounds to be helpful prior to formulating the product but have a special appreciation for GABA and L-Theanine when taken orally. I started PYM because I found those specific compounds to be extremely helpful for me personally when I was going through a very difficult time in my life after my dad died by suicide. Both compounds helped me manage extreme amounts of stress and anxiety I was feeling during a very traumatic period.

SH: Dr Appasani, would you break down the benefits of the 3 functional ingredients for us?

DA: The three ingredients that make up the Mood Chews are all-naturally occurring, safe molecules that help to support our mood and hormonal balance. They are ingredients that are naturally found in plants and in our own bodies.

GABA

Proven Results: Anxiety Relief, Mood Relief, Pain Relief

A naturally occurring neurotransmitter in the brain that functions as the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter.

Rhodiola

Proven Results: Anti-Depressant, Anxiety Relief, Neuroprotection

Works with the body to relieve stress and possesses neuroprotective and anxiolytic properties.

L-Theanine

Proven Results: Relaxation, Improved Cognition, Focus

Reduces physical and mental stress, improves cognition, boosts mood and cognitive performance.

SH: Dr Appasani, what can people expect to experience with the product and how should they use it?

DA: First and foremost, if you have any concern given other medication you are on or medical conditions, please consult with your physician. The recommended way to take the PYM Mood Chew is by taking 1-2 chews at the start of your day, and then as-needed throughout. Do not exceed 20 chews in one day. PYM was designed to seamlessly integrate into your daily life and routine, so the chews can be taken on an empty stomach or enjoyed alongside food and drinks. Our only recommendation is to not take PYM with coffee, as caffeine combined with PYM can sometimes make certain individuals feel more anxious.

If PYM is doing its job, you should feel centered, okay, capable, good, neutral, able to do what you need to do. It’s subtle and that’s the point! No tingles, jitters or buzz. I began to feel the effects of PYM within 15-20 minutes of taking my first chew.

SH: Zak, how do you hope that people will use the product?

ZW: My hope is that people will use PYM as a way to help ease the everyday stressors and anxieties that we face in our daily lives. Formulating this product transformed my everyday life and with the launch, I’m excited for the opportunity to introduce consumers to these powerful and natural ingredients that can help us handle everything life throws at us.

SH: Zak, what are some of your other favorite resources for mental health: any recommendations for books or practices?

ZW: Yes, for books: The Mood Cure, The Body Keeps the Score, Thinking Fast and Slow, Intuition Pumps and Other Tools for Thinking
As far as activities go, I recommend Gratitude Exercises, Community Support Groups, Mindfulness, Avoiding Processed Foods, Talk Therapy, and Walking

How to Survive This Stress Storm + Heal Yourself Naturally

You may know Naomi Whittel from her New York Times best-selling book on diet and healthy lifestyle. Or perhaps you’ve seen her with Dr. Sanjay Gupta in her role as a trusted “wellness warrior” as she's been called because of her tireless dedication to fighting the health issues that affect us, and our families.

Naomi Whittel is a fervent believer in actual “self-care” and has travelled the world – from Panama to Singapore; Cameroon to Okinawa; and many parts in-between – to find healing solutions that really work. Having personally battled a painful and embarrassing autoimmune condition triggered by inflammation, she then spent years researching and refining ways to better support her own immune system. Today, she's sharing one of the best, proven solutions with us...

The Inflammation Barrage

You are under constant attack by what I call “hidden inflammation”. It’s a 24/7 assault upon every part of your body. It can muck up your digestive system; burden your heart; fog your brain; make your joints stiff and achy; sap your energy; and make your skin look like weathered leather.

Frankly, inflammation targets your body like a human pin cushion. And not one single part is immune to the danger. If you don’t do something to fight back, you could look and feel years older before your time. It’s nearly impossible to hide from the causes of chronic inflammation. Here are just a few of the dangers:

• Environmental pollution – largely unavoidable, unless you live in a (non-plastic) bubble.

• Poor Diet – a couple drinks; burger & fries; that morning bagel; a typical pasta dinner; a slice of birthday cake…they all contribute.

• Excess Stress – you don’t have any of that, do you (maybe even an extra helping right now)?

Stress in the Age of Covid

Normal everyday life is stressful enough. Add Covid to the mix, and stress zooms off the charts.

More than half of Americans – and rising – report increased stress and worry. Alcohol consumption is up. So is “stress eating”. And quality sleep is down. What worries me is that study after study shows stress weakens the immune system - exactly what you don’t need in times like these.

That’s why I’m so eager to share this all-natural, anti-inflammatory healing combo. Sure, there are times you need doctors and pharmacological solutions, but most of the time you’re on your own. And if you don’t strive for your best possible health every day, no one else is going to do it for you.

That’s why my passion is discovering, unlocking and refining the healing power of nature’s immense bounty and bringing these solutions to people like you…

…backed by both healing traditions and modern scientific evidence.

…personally researched, tested and then clearly explained.

…and meticulously refined to the most-exacting standards for purity and effectiveness.

I discovered the keys to this time-honored – and now scientifically-proven – therapy in my travels to Bangalore, India and the South of France. You may be familiar with some of the benefits of Turmeric and Resveratrol. Perhaps you even take some form of them already. Please keep reading to learn why my Turmeric + Resveratrol formula rises above the rest and creates a potent “1 + 1 = 3” synergy when it comes to battling chronic inflammation.

"If Turmeric were owned by Big Pharma,
it would probably cost $100 a capsule."

Consider just a few of turmeric's clinically proven benefits...

Chronic Inflammation: I can’t say this strongly enough: Chronic inflammation – even at levels so low that it remains hidden – is implicated in virtually all major health issues.

Research shows the enzyme COX-2 triggers inflammation in your body. But gold-standard clinical studies show that Turmeric is the most potent and effective natural substance for neutralizing COX-2.

Heart Health: Researchers have concluded that reducing inflammation is essential to maintaining heart health. And breakthrough research shows Turmeric can reduce the critical inflammation marker CRP (C-reactive protein) an incredible 44%! What’s more, Turmeric has been shown to cut LDL cholesterol 21% and slash damaging triglycerides an astounding 47%.

Your Brain: “BDNF” is a growth hormone critical to youthful brain function. In fact, scientists believe it may be key to keeping you sharp as a tack as you age. Impressively, studies have shown that Turmeric promotes the production of BDNF.

Here’s the key -- Turmeric is the rare substance that crosses the blood/brain barrier – it actually seeps into brain tissue to increase blood flow and reduce the dangerous inflammation that can cause degenerative disease.

In fact, one recent placebo-controlled, double-blind trial showed that Turmeric drove improvement in memory and mood in adults – while decreasing fatigue. too.

Joint Pain: One rheumatoid arthritis study proved Turmeric more effective and safer than solutions typically recommended by doctors.

Another study of osteoarthritis showed that Turmeric relieved joint pain as well as mainstream remedies – relieving joint stiffness and improving function – without the side effects of standard treatments.

The Benefits of Turmeric

Promotes brain health
Protects your heart
Eases joint pain
Improves metabolic function
Erases chronic inflammation
Aids digestion and soothes digestive problems
Neutralizes free radicals
Fights aging
Improves skin health

For my money, Turmeric is nature’s most powerful weapon against the ravages of aging and chronic inflammation.

Ever since I first traveled to India, where it has been used in cooking and as medicine for centuries, I’ve been a believer. I cook with it; I make tea; and I supplement my diet every day with this high-grade Turmeric + Resveratrol combo.

If you’re concerned about the dangers of unseen, chronic inflammation and the health of your heart or brain – or if you suffer from joint stiffness, digestive problems or skin issues – I urge you to do the same.

The French Paradox + The
Power of Resveratrol

Resveratrol:Because we all want to look and feel younger than our age. I love the synergy of combining Turmeric with Resveratrol. They are both powerful anti-inflammatory agents, but all my experience and research show that combining the two creates a virtual anti-aging fortress.

I first fell in love with Resveratrol years ago, extolling its many virtues long before it became “cool”. You see, I traveled extensively through the South of France studying the “French Paradox” – the fact that the French have much lower incidence of serious heart problems, despite a diet loaded with cheese, fatty fish and oils.

The mitigating factor? Research points to the fact that the French drink lots (and lots) of red wine. And that just happens to be a great source for one of the most powerful antioxidants in nature’s bounty – the polyphenol, Resveratrol. It’s like unlocking the fountain of youth.

I studied Resveratrol in the vineyards of Bordeaux and marveled at how this healing compound is found in all parts of red grapes – from the stems, fruit, and seeds, to the skin of the grapes.

In fact, this incredible antioxidant actually protects the vines against pathogens. And in a way, it could do the same for you. But you’d need to drink a hundred glasses of wine to get the same benefits offered by one daily dose of my Turmeric + Resveratrol combo.

Have you ever heard of “longevity genes”? That’s the nickname for “sirtuins” – proteins that directly affect metabolism, cellular health and even lifespan. In particular, Resveratrol activates SIRT1 – the most-widely studied sirtuin – and triggers autophagy, the cellular process that allows your body to repair and rejuvenate itself. In other words, it helps you “stay young” – or as young as possible – in appearance and ability.

The Benefits of Resveratrol

May extend lifespan
Supports healthy cartilage
Protects brain function
Helps balance blood sugar
Potent anti-inflammatory
Fights cellular oxidation
Promotes healthy cholesterol
Helps lower blood pressure

I wish you could go through my process of discovery with me, side-by-side. We’d travel together to Bangalore, India and the South of France, where Turmeric and Resveratrol have long been a part of everyday life. You’d meet both traditional healers and the scientists doing new clinical research; question them with me – and gain confidence in these natural healing compounds through their knowledge.

You see, I don’t just “think these things up” on my own. I consider myself a “co-creator”. I work with the growers of plants and herbs; old-time healers; and modern researchers to discover, refine and bring Mother Nature’s best, proven healing solutions directly to you. You deserve the absolute best for your money. It pains me when I see people throw away money on inferior products:

• Some supplements just pass unused through your system. Turmeric is a miraculous substance, but it’s not easily absorbed. That’s why I include one key ingredient to unlocking all its benefits – one that increases bioavailability by up to 2,000%!

• Watch out for binders, fillers and dyes that may trigger allergic reactions – or even depress immune function.

• Don’t trust supplements manufactured in dubious conditions overseas.

• Demand the proper form. For example, all “resveratrol” is not the same. You want to see “TRANS-resveratrol” included in the formula – the only kind proven to stimulate your “youth gene”.

• Get the right dosage for the right price – the internet is riddled with inferior products at inflated prices.

Get NAOMI Turmeric + Resveratrol
for $20 Per Bottle + Free Shipping

That’s why I created this specific Turmeric + Resveratrol formula –it’s my personal go-to immune-booster! It provides:

1. High-Potency Turmeric. Standardized to 95% curcuminoids, the key active ingredient promoting the many health benefits of Turmeric. That’s the highest level possible – and a huge healing difference when compared to many inferior products, watered-down to 50% curcuminoids or less!

2. Research-Level Dosage. At 1,000 mg you are getting a clinically proven dose of Turmeric every day. Many brands contain 100 mg or less – a waste of your money.

3. Super-Antioxidant Resveratrol. Get a full 100 mg of TRANS-Resveratrol – scientifically shown to help stimulate your “youth gene”. That’s all the “French Paradox” benefits of 100 glasses of red wine – without the alcohol!

4. Superior Absorption. This formula includes 10 mg of BioPerine black pepper extract, shown to increase turmeric absorption up to 2,000%. Even better, BioPerine also boosts absorption of Resveratrol by more than 200%!

5. Enhanced with 25 mg of Grapeseed Extract. For another heart health boost, research shows grapeseed can help lower blood pressure and improve blood flow.

6. Free of Magnesium Stearate. There are many concerns about the safety of this commonly used additive. In my opinion, the risk isn’t worth it – so I guarantee you won’t find it here.

7. Quality You Can Trust. My Turmeric + Resveratrol is manufactured in a state-of-the-art, FDA-inspected facility right here in the United States. Unlike many supplements that come from questionable sources, you can rest assured that the potency and purity of this product meets my exacting standards.

Today, you can get my Turmeric + Resveratrol at an incredibly affordable price – as low as $20 per bottle, less than half what some similar formulas cost! This offer is not available in stores – and that’s actually a big plus in today’s world. How To Make Homemade Jellies With Cold-Pressed Juices

nothing delivers color therapy quite as well as a line up of cold-pressed juices. Years ago, we asked one of our fave bloggers, Claire Thomas of Kitchy Kitchen, to try making our favorite juices into glowy, translucent juice Jell-O -- and, boy, did she deliver.

Years later, gelatin and collagen are more popular than ever and we're making these jellies for a beautifying, delicious dessert every chance we get! Need more details on why you should be eating gelatin in the first place? Click through this way to learn all about it.

As for juice flavors, we can't get over Orange Turmeric made this way! Eat dessert til your skin glows...

The bright, fresh flavors in cold-pressed juice make these little jellies a modern twist on the jammier pâte de fruit. The texture of these gummies is dense but yielding, thanks to the grass-fed gelatin. For a more intense gummy-bear texture, add an extra tablespoon of gelatin. For a looser texture, use a tablespoon less. Juices with a little natural sweetness (think apple juice or orange juice) tend to work best, but feel free to try some of the root or green juices with a touch of raw honey mixed in. Enjoy!

Nancy Silverton On Grilled Cheese, Common Baking Foibles + The Perfect Knife

LA.chef and restaurateur, Nancy Silverton is as beloved as the artisanal bread and pizza she’s helped make famous. First, with the La Brea Bakery which she founded and eventually sold in 2001 and then with legendary LA restaurants Osteria Mozza, Pizzeria Mozza, and Chi Spacca (alongside partners Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich), Nancy has shaped the way we eat in this city.

Nancy recently partnered with Made In for a limited edition bread knife and we're all about it. After all, who else can sell a pre fixe menu for $75 headlined by grilled cheese sandwiches and get away with it? Nancy can not only do it, the woman can sell it out and leave us drooling for more.

We caught up with the legend of well-crafted carbs here...

Easiest mistakes to avoid when learning to make bread - could you share a few tips? The number one mistake is to rush. Do NOT rush. The other is to expect perfection after the first attempts.

nancy silverton baking

Best bread you've ever had: The first loaf of bread I had at the renowned Parisian bakery Poilane. It was 1979 and the loaf was called a "miche." That first bread was the best. I had never had bread that tasted like that. (Editor's note: grab our recipe for cultured butter from the world class chef at Poilane, here!)

Settle a bet: what's the absolute best way to store bread? Room temp, cut side down.

Go-to bread making tools: I think the Dutch Oven to proof and bake the loaf.

Favorite bread or baking cookbooks? Melisa Weller’s new book, A Good Bake, is destined to be my new favorite. I saw a sneak preview and it’s the most anticipated baking book of the season. She’s a scientist turned baker.

What is your favorite bread recipe in the fall? Bread is a year long treat. I don’t have favorites breads for the seasons. Of course, I do live in Los Angeles!
