Wildflower Power: Inside Botany Flowers’ Anthropologie Workshop

Ever wished you could move into one of Anthropologie's well-styled window displays? Us too. While our dreams of napping under a papier-mâchéd flutter of butterflies might not be feasible, these in-store Anthropologie workshops with local artisans are the next best thing. Last week, the ladies of Botany Flowers filled this Anthropologie location with organic wildflowers from Silver Lake Farms, a local grower whose flowers are now sold at their new Pasadena shop. Workshop-goers enjoyed a hand's-on floral arranging class that focused on seasonal flowers - new local varieties bloom every single month of the year! We love seeing this fresh explosion of tiered greens and blooms in one of our favorite stores, along with charming handwritten details by Goldpress Paper. Silver Lake Farms grows an idyllic mix of organic wildflowers and decorative weeds on their sustainable one-acre farm not far from Downtown LA. Their dreamy acre is, in their own words, filled with "layers and layers of soft pastel petals in deep violets, blues and pinks...delicate dreamy ranunculus and oh so fragrant sweet peas...antique wildflowers, larkspur, Queen Anne’s lace, soft grasses, airy branches." Don't you wish this story was scratch-and-sniff? We asked Botany to share a few floral arranging tips with us and their notes are quite useful! Take their advice to heart, gather a few seasonal blooms and get to filling your home with gorgeous arrangements!

Color Therapy 101: 7 Colors And How They Impact Your Mood

You're probably well aware that even the smallest of things can affect your mood: the quality of your food, the amount of sleep you log, the difference between a clear road and gridlocked rush-hour traffic. But did you know that the way you use color can affect your emotions too? Colors, like the ones in the color wheel above from our shoot with designlovefest, each have a distinct affect on our psyche. We're learning more with Honestly by Honest Company, who is breaking down the basics of color psychology with key tips on decorating your way to a more pleasant disposition. Here's the Honest truth... Ever notice how a brightly colored living room or a crisp white office space influences how you feel? Colors impact people in varying ways depending on past associations and how your brain processes those hues. The color psychology guide below includes the most common color and mood associations, so you can decorate based on how you’d like each room in your home to feel. Keep in mind that various tones of the same color will evoke different moods. Take blue for example, a cool beach-y blue is said to be great for relaxing spaces, while a deep navy is still intimate and cozy but more formal. You can also use warm or cool shades of the same color to change the ambiance and feeling a space conveys. The easiest and most affordable way to bring color into your home is with paint. Be sure to buy no-VOC paint. You can also liven-up a room by painting the furniture. Buy a dresser from a yard sale and rehab it with a coat of your fave color and new knobs—voila! A beautiful new piece of furniture that brings a pop of color—and emotion—into a room. Check out the color-mood associations below: [olists num=1] Want more hue help? Head on over to Honestly for a complete breakdown of each color and how it can keep your mood in check!

Balancing Act: The Sensitive Gal’s Guide To Apologies

One One Hand: You've heard it thrice already before breakfast: I'm Sorry. You hear it in line for coffee, you hear it when you open the door for someone. An arm brushes against you unexpectedly at work or the yogi next to you scoots their mat a few inches to the right to make space in a crowded class. The problem with our over-apologizing isn't just that it cuts down at our self respect and prevents a barrier between us and full ownership of our lives, it's that an abundance of apologies creates a "boy who cried wolf" scenario in which our true apologies are cheapened and seen as less than genuine. How many times have we said we're sorry when it's really just been a lackluster way of protecting ourselves or making friends? If we’re known as a constant sorry-sayer, it doesn’t matter how genuinely sorry we are or how terrible we feel - our sorry is not trustworthy and is deemed inauthentic. "Sorry" has become cheap, and for someone as sensitive as you are, it's become a way to shine a little bit less in the world. On The Other Hand: You screwed up - majorly. Maybe it was a missed deadline. Maybe you forgot about important plans. Maybe you slept through your alarm clock or lost a borrowed pair of earrings. Maybe it was even worse. Whatever the case, you are deeply sorry - yet don't know how to accurately portray how sincere you really are without coming across as flippant, disgenuine, or just another sorry-monster. We've covered the ins and outs of breaking out of over-apologizing - saying sorry as a placeholder or a shield. But what about those times when you actually are sorry? The Balance: You cannot control the amount of other people's sorrys that plague your day - but what you can do, as a sensitive and aware human being, is subtly shift the way you apologize and be the slow-yet-steady change you wish to see in the world. The act of saying "sorry" holds a lot more weight to someone as tuned into their soul as you are than others may realize. Here are a few strategies on how to say sorry for those of us who get hit the deepest by our own mistakes, and want to make our apologies last longer than just five little letters: [olists num=1]

Rhubarb Pink Pepper + Jalapeno Sage: Two Fresh-Pressed Juice Cocktails To Shake Up Now

There's nothing we love more on a summer afternoon than popping a cold bottle of our new jalapeno-spiked green juice...and pouring it into a shaker full of fresh herbs and artisanal "garden gin." Garden gin? Yes. Art In The Age is making old-fashioned spirits spiked with the coolest organic flavor combinations we've seen in a while. After tasting their cocktails at a recent shin-dig, we knew we needed to get together! High atop the Hollywood landscape inside Petit Ermitage's enchanting rooftop garden, we finally met up with Art In The Age ambassador, Rachel Mae Furman of Smoke & Honey, to see what kind of delicious mischief we could get into. The results of our all-natural mixology experimentations are the two cocktail recipes below, each featuring one of Pressed Juicery's new summer flavors mixed with a fresh combination of citrus fruit, herbs, homemade syrups and Art In The Age's outrageous spirits. The first juice cocktail, Spiked Rhubarb Tea, is all about summer rhubarb, head-to-toe. To start, the juice is a blend of summery rhubarb, berries, pineapple and melon. The spirit, a 'Rhubarb Tea,' is steeped with carrots and beets, cardamom and - yes - more rhubarb. These two bottles could go it alone just fine, but we've added a splash of champagne and Rachel's homemade pink peppercorn simple syrup to take this glass to the next-level. We love Rachel's watermelon juice ice cubes for this as well. To recreate at home, simple empty a bottle of Watermelon Mint into the ice tray of any shape or size and freeze the night before your gathering. The juice freezes up just fine and pops from the mold a bright neon pink - throw in fresh mint before freezing for even more of a special touch. Our second cocktail makes perfect use of Pressed Juicery's newest spicy Greens, a blend of kale, spinach and romaine with yuzu and jalapeno. Greens in a cocktail? Trust--this drink recipe is our new go-to. The sweet, mellow greens and kick of jalapeno are the perfect match for this sage and fennel instilled spirit. Hints of rosemary, thyme and even lavender, are why they call this spirit "garden gin." Add the fresh herbs, serve each cocktail in a chilled coupe, and you've got dinner guests who won't go home (if that's what you're after). Enjoy both recipes at home and let us know how it goes. Tell us which Pressed Juicery flavors you're using for cocktails at home (the simplest weekend recipe is Citrus 3 and sparkling wine!) For even more cocktail ideas, see our recent shake up with our favorite vegan L.A. bartender, snatch up Gracias Madre's own margarita recipe, and take a deeper look at traditional bitters. Detox your Trail Mix: 9 Ingredients To Nix + 4 Mixes We Love

Trail mix might seem like the perfect health food: a blend of nuts, seeds and fruits, it provides quick energy, healthy fats, essential vitamins and minerals, as well as a host of anti-aging antioxidants. But - just like trail mix's cousin, granola - this crunchy snack is not always as innocent as it claims to be. And it's not because of those chocolate chips. There are quite a few ways in which trail mix can go terribly wrong. The dried fruits can contain sulfur and added sugar, the nuts can be less than fresh, and too many mixes can contain cheaply produced, unhealthful oils. Don't worry - if you're like us and love this hiking staple snack, you certainly don't have to give it up! We've gathered a short list of great mixes that are ultra-clean and healthy, plus we've gone one step further and outlined all the dirty details you should be avoiding. Damage Control: Offsetting Fried Foods with Healthy Fats

In a perfect world, every summer vacation food would be healthy for us, making it easy for us to eat fried foods in our bikinis. Donuts for breakfast, french fries for lunch, and vegetable tempura sushi for dinner. We wish. Although a giant plate of tempura isn'tt going to improve our health anytime soon, there is something we can do to offset the damage of eating fried foods - and the solution tastes pretty great too. By using the right nutrition at the right times, we can protect our bodies from the harmful effects of our favorite indulgences and late-night snacks. The Damage: The process of frying food, whether it be a ball of dough or an avocado, leads to the destruction of the nutrients found in those food. Vitamins and minerals are lost, fats are oxidized (i.e., they become rancid), proteins create heterocyclic amines which are potential carcinogens, and carbohydrates create a cancer-causing agent called acrylamides. As a result, the food you're consuming food is nutritionally "dead," and directly harmful to your body as well. When rancid fats are consumed, like when you eat fried foods, the body takes those damaged fats and utilizes them for key processes in the body. Instead of having healthy strong lipids (fats), you have weak and permeable ones, which leads to a host of health issues. For one, lipids are the main component for creating the membranes of our cells, and if our membranes are damaged, the cells become vulnerable to pathogens (viruses, bacteria, fungus) since they don't have a strong barrier against those pathogens. Secondly, rancid fats lead to the destruction of vitamins already present in the body, resulting in deficiency. Thirdly, rancid fats cause inflammation in the body, which stresses the immune system and signals a pain response. Finally, in research studies, the consumption of rancid fats has been found to increase the expression of cancer genes, while turning off tumor suppression genes.

Fill in the Gap: In order to save our bodies from the damage done by eating fried foods, we must be religious about daily consumption of healthy fats. This includes fats and oils that: a) are protective against free radicals, the cell-damaging compounds created by the rancid fats; b) provide the body with the building blocks for cellular membranes and hormone production; and c) act as anti-inflammatory and cancer-preventative agents. While consuming fried foods is never a healthy practice, if you flood your body daily with healthy fats from the list below, you can work toward controlling the damage.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fatty acids are fats that are not made by the body and must be received from a food source. They include ALA, EPA and DHA, which are the fats needed by the body to create strong cells. This group of fats has been shown to lower inflammation in the body, to prevent against depression, and they may help to lower the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer and arthritis. In addition, they are antioxidants that protect the body from the damage done by free radicals, which is exactly what we need to defend against the rancid fats in fried foods. The Form: There are many ways to get your daily dose of omega-3 fatty acids, including both food and supplement options. You can get ample DHA and EPA in lightly cooked or raw, wild-caught, cold-water fish such as salmon or halibut. If you are vegan, take the algae-based supplement DHA 200 by Quantum Nutrition Labs. You can get ALA in flax, chia, pumpkin or hemp seeds, and raw walnuts.

High-Quality Saturated Fats: It is now widely accepted that high-quality, unprocessed saturated fats are not related to a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease, and they may even help to lower the risk. In addition, they have been linked to lower inflammation levels in the body, improved gut health, proper hormone production, brain function and a healthy immune response. The most important part is that the body will choose to use these fats over the rancid fats found in fried foods, therefore reducing your risk of health complications. The Form: The best sources of saturated fats are grass-fed, organic beef, free-range eggs, organic ghee (clarified butter), avocado and coconut oil/butter. Always remember that even healthy saturated fats can be damaged by high heat, so stick to eating them raw, lightly-cooked, or follow these helpful guidelines for cooking with the right oils.

Health at all Costs: The Best Vitamin D Sources at Every Price

If vitamins could gain celebrity status, then vitamin D would be the new "It Girl." Vitamin D, the elusive sunshine vitamin, has quickly become one of the most talked about vitamins in the health world. The good news is its fame is well deserved, with countless research studies backing its stardom. Vitamin D is a very important vitamin that is required by the body for a host of functions, which is why it is one of the most intensely studied vitamins today. First off, vitamin D is needed for calcium absorption. Many people don't realize this, but without vitamin D, calcium cannot do its job properly. This leads to weakened bones - and ultimately to osteoporosis and osteopenia. Vitamin D is also a main source of fuel for our white blood cells, our body's first line of defense against pathogens (whether bacteria, virus, or fungus). So in order to prevent illness, we need vitamin D. Vitamin D also supports healthy blood sugar levels, which has been correlated to a lower risk of diabetes. If those were not enough reasons to start ramping up your vitamin D levels, then here are a few more: vitamin D supports a healthy cardiovascular system, as well as colon, breast and prostate tissue, and may prevent a preterm delivery. The most astounding fact, however, is that a vitamin D deficiency can increase your risk for a stroke, cardiovascular disease, several forms of cancer, depression, schizophrenia, and some autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis. But why is there so much concern about vitamin D levels when we get it from the sun? Researchers have found out that in every age and gender group, the average American is deficient, with less than 5% meeting the normal levels. That is because there are many factors that prevent it from being made by the body. These include everything from your skin color, sunscreen use, the latitude in which you live, to the weather and the season. For example, using a sunscreen with as little as a 15+ protection cuts the skin's vitamin D production by a whopping ninety-nine percent! Even if you get proper sun exposure, vitamin D still needs to be made with the help of the kidneys and the liver. Without proper liver and kidney function, your chances of metabolizing vitamin D from the sun is lowered. That is why supplementation is necessary for so many people, if not everyone. Don't worry though - not only is vitamin D quite affordable, we have made sure to take the guesswork out and find the best sources for you. Just remember, always purchase vitamin D3, which is the form of the vitamin that is best utilized by the body. Take your pick from the best vitamin D sources we've picked and begin to enjoy its sunny benefits...

High: Vitamin D3 VESIsorb by Pure Encapsulations

This is one of the most unique vitamin D3 supplements on the market, in that it utilizes a patented system (nano-colloid) to maximize absorption. The supplement can easily transport across the intestinal tract, making it to the blood to be metabolized. Because the full absorption of vitamin D is so important to reaching healthy levels of vitamin D, we recommend taking Pure Encapsulations' version, especially to those who have had trouble with other supplement forms.

Midpoint: D3 Serum by Premier Research Labs

When choosing a liquid form of vitamin D3, this supplement is the best. Made through the extraction of lamb's wool and suspended in olive oil, it has an extremely pleasant taste. The tiny bottle is also the perfect size to carry around in your purse or pocket for easy access. A little goes a long way, so reordering frequently is not an issue - and with a price like eleven dollars, it's a happy purchase indeed!

Low: Sunbathing

This list would not be complete without the inclusion of good old fashioned sunbathing. While sunbathing is not a viable option in some parts of the world, if you do happen to live in a place with ample rays, take advantage! Make sure to go bare-skinned, and to get direct light. In order to determine how much sun you need (because each person is different), use this vitamin D calculator or download this app. They will both determine how many minutes or hours you have to clock a week. Just remember, for the majority of people, sunbathing alone won't cut it - so consider also supplementing with one of our other choices. You can always get a blood test done to see where your levels are, then act accordingly!

TCM note: Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning that it is digested and transported like dietary fats. As a result, reaching optimal blood levels of Vitamin D requires the ability to digest fats properly. Fats are digested with the help of bile from the gallbladder. Poor gallbladder health can lead to low Vitamin D levels despite supplementation, so make sure to concurrently support the gallbladder if needed.

Girl On Grill: Small Batches of Our Favorite Summer Condiment

Isabel Freed makes the one essential we won't grill without: small-batch, organic mustard that packs in flavor and spice, but without the extra calories. We rarely use the word "calories" on TCM. It's our stance that our many female readers hear enough about calories already, and that, if you're packing in high-quality, highly-nutritious foods, you and your waistline are headed in the right direction. But, when it comes to condiments, especially for rich meals on the grill, light sauces and marinades are much appreciated! We use mustard like it's going out of style, for grilling, naturally, but also for year-round salad dressings, veggie dips and sandwich spreads. Isabel's farm-based canning company, Pantry House, makes two of our favorites: whole grain beer mustard and a spicy horseradish mustard that will knock your socks off. Pantry House uses only organic and sustainable farms to source their ingredients. The farm pictured, Route 1 Farms, is owned by a dear friend of Isabel's and produces the peppers for another of her killer condiments: her breakfast-perfecting Pepper Jam. We love these summery photos of Isabel and friends grilling on the farm. Get in on our mustard obsession and take Isabel's tips for using the spicy stuff every which way, including her recipe for a perfect mustard dressing! [olists num=1] [olists num=2]

Shop Talk: A Day In The Shop With L.A.’s Chay

If, in some unexplained cosmic collision, the 1970's smashed into 2025, the results would look something like this small shop on West 3rd Street in LA. Chay, filled with some of our favorite artisans, whose esthetic, we believe, is best described in our hypothetical time warp situation, is the ideal spot for a little summer home and closet update. Think incredible knits by Ryan Roche, artisan-made brass arm candy, and timeless home goods from Sweden's Skultuna. Whether we're on the hunt for the perfect gift or simply looking to immerse ourselves in pure loveliness for a moment, shops like Chay provide us with that perfectly-curated immersion therapy we're looking for. Owner, Chay Wike, has fit her world-traveling ways onto her shelves along with hints of her South African rocker parent's roots. We love the shop's vibe and asked Chay to share a few insights about life between it's walls...

Superfood Spotlight: Mint

What you need to know: It turns out that one of our favorite ingredients for making watermelon juice, mojitos and ice cream-esque smoothies is particularly therapeutic to the body! Mint leaves are an herb that have repeatedly been proven in research to be an effective treatment for all kinds of aches and pains. From indigestion to flatulence, to nausea and irritable bowel syndrome, mint brings relief to digestive disorders and upset stomaches. It's also the best way to freshen the breath, and possibly even halt the growth of harmful bacteria and fungus in the bod. Why you should try it: Other than being a natural way to ease a sour stomach, mint may also have the potential to prevent certain forms of cancer. The oils contained in mint called monoterpenes have been shown in research to prevent the carcinogenesis process at both the initiation and promotion/progression stages. In particular, the miraculous minty oils target cancers of the breast, liver, lung, and pancreas - and may be effective in treating leukemia. Let's get together: The options are endless when it comes to finding ways to eat mint! Being the juice addicts that we are, we recommend getting your daily dose by enjoying a bottle of Pressed Juicery's Citrus 2 or Citrus 3. The combination of pineapple, apple, lemon and mint in Citrus 2 is the perfect sweet treat, or get your metabolism revved up with Citrus 3's synergy of grapefruit and mint. Drink up!

Healthy Summer Entertaining: How To Throw A Vegan Dinner Party

Summer Sanders is the plant-based author and blogger behind Radiantly Raw, a lifestyle brand that is helping so many to incorporate more plant-based living foods into their diets. Summer is a raw foods expert and cleansing specialist, but, surprisingly, she's not too strict about her raw-slash-vegan ways. Her advice on health and nutrition is always spot-on and 100% attainable - she's one of our favorite Instagramers to follow for constant and practical inspiration (find her at @rawfoodlove). Since Summer's own plant-based lifestyle is so flexible, she's the hostess with the mostest for vegan soirees that will please all shapes and sizes. Looking to throw an all-vegan dinner party but want to make sure your omnivore guests go back for seconds? Take a few of Summer's best tips, then whip up her raw cheesecake worth every little berry-filled bite! Dinner parties are one of my favorite ways to celebrate life and connect with my friends and family. I love bringing people together and bonding with the people who mean the most to me over great food and wine! The challenging thing when planning dinner parties (as a vegan) is putting together a spread of food that is beautiful and interesting to all guests. Not everyone is a vegetarian, not every one is vegan, and a large number of my friends enjoy meats in their diet. My goal when preparing foods for a plant-based dinner party is to make delicious dishes that will satisfy even the pickiest meat eater. Below are some great tips that have helped me feed a variety of diet types with success! The most important tip is to prepare the food with love. The time and heart that goes into preparing the food will be obvious when your guests take a bite! Don’t stress yourself, keep it simple and clean, buy local and keep it fun for you!
