Serum Sticks + Miracle Balm: 5 Clean Beauty Drops Of Note Lately

It's impossible to keep up with the clean beauty space these days! We just don't have enough skin to test all of the incredible product launches happening, but we're giving it our best shot -- and having fun doing it.

From the stockpile of (sustainably made) tubes and tins coming our way these days, here are the most notable...

Jone Road Miracle Balm | We were thrilled to see beauty icon, Bobbi Brown join the clean beauty game with the launch of Jones Road. Of course, Brown could be trusted to make a line full of products that are high-functioning A-Z, but stand outs include the glowy Miracle Balm (shown above) and The Face Pencil, a creamy concealer-foundation that can be applied precisely where needed.

RMS Creaseless Eyelights | Another new product whose packaging is as irresistible as the formula, we give RMS Beauty's new cream eyeshadows an A+. We've hosted so many special events with RMS founder and beauty icon, Rose-Marie Swift (now lost in the depths of our social media archives). It's no surprise that the brand has again nailed flattering shades and ideal textures that are a dream to apply.

Live Tinted SUPERHUE | We just can't resist Live Tinted founder, Deepica Mutyala's energy. It was her viral video showing red lipstick as a concealer for her skin tone that inspired the launch of Live Tinted. The brand has since emerged as a booming solutions-based beauty brand for underrepresented people in the beauty space. Live Tinted just launched SUPERHUE, a balm stick that turns into a pigmentation-fighting serum with Niacinamide, Bakuchiol and Vitamin C. We think the balm to serum format will help more women stick with a routine to recover radiance and clarity over time.

MERIT Signature Lip Lightweight Lipstick | Launching in just 8 decidedly neutral shades, Merit's new lipstick is a product to obsess over. Each color is a mood, richly pigmented, but as comfortable to wear as a balm. Check the swatches before you buy and don't be afraid of those rich brown shades -- the final result is sheer and flattering.

Merit lipstick

fresh Floral Recovery Redness Reducing Overnight Mask | Cult favorite, fresh launched their first overnight mask for sensitive skin this year -- a category we're generally obsessed with. The highly-anticipated Floral Recovery Calming Mask has already gained an almost 5 star rating across online retailers, high praise for a treatment designed to soothe redness and even skin tone. Remember that even if your skin isn't sensitive, a mask like this one is perfect after peels or at-home retinol serums!

Two more clean brands to watch? Check out our story on Rel Beauty's gorgeous lip balms here and Scarlett Johansson's new The Outset skincare line here.

It Turns Out You Really Do Need A Multivitamin: My Own Aha Moment As A Healthy Eater

Let’s say that you work out, eat well, avoid processed sugar, and are good at managing your stress. Do you really need to take a multivitamin?

The answer is yes, according to so many health practitioners we trust. Sometimes, the simplest wellness habits are also the easiest to overlook.

We’ve partnered with mindbodygreen to take a closer look at their advanced solution to filling daily nutrient gaps, the ultimate multivitamin+. For about $1.95 a day, this multi will help you cover a broad range of essential nutrients (plus phytonutrients), most of us could never get from diet alone.

Registered Dietitian Ella Davar, R.D., CDN calls mbg’s multi “the best on the market”, mainly because it contains resveratrol, glutathione, vitamin D, selenium, zinc and other functional nutrients that so many other multivitamins simply don’t include.

Let’s break down why, yes, you really do need a daily multivitamin, how to select one that your body will actually absorb, and why mindbodygreen’s version makes a really smart choice.

My Own Aha Moment: The Body Does Not Lie

After recently working with a nutritionist on a ton of testing and bloodwork, we discovered that – despite what I consider to be a top notch diet and my slew of daily supplements -- I had some major nutritional gaps.

She quickly assured me that she sees it all the time amongst those with healthy diets and noted that she’d met many wellness editors and health enthusiasts that, while well-acquainted with superfoods and the latest trends, still have nutrient inadequacies.

Lesson to be learned? You just can’t skip over the essentials. The body doesn’t lie, as they say, and those nutrient gaps were showing me what I needed to see.

The Daily Multivitamin: Back To The Basics

In this modern environment, an essential daily multivitamin has simply become a non-negotiable.

Think you don’t need a multivitamin because you eat so well? Clearly, we were once in that camp too. But almost everyone has gaps in their nutrient intake — and it’s not always their fault. Here are the facts:

+ Millions of Americans fail to meet their nutritional needs for essential micronutrients (aka vitamins and minerals) from diet alone.†

+ While it’s obvious that a diet of drive-thru burgers will leave you lacking in vital nutrients, most healthy eaters need a daily multivitamin, but do not realize it.

+ Many nutrition pros fault these modern-day factors:

Depleted soil quality
Lack of food freshness
Poor nutrient absorption from a wide variety of lifestyle factors
Suboptimal gut health

Yes, a well-balanced diet is crucial, but, as I quickly learned from my own experience, chances are you need a modern-day multi to fill essential gaps and feel your absolute best.*

mindbodygreen supplement review

All that said, let’s take a look at mindbodygreen’s ultimate multivitamin+.

Your Chewable Vitamin Might Not Cut It:
A Closer Look at mindbodygreen’s ultimate multivitamin+

As supplement aisles seem to get longer and longer every year, it’s hard to know what to buy and which qualities truly matter for the money.

These are two key factors when shopping for supplements:

+ Formula: Technically, any supplement with ‘multiple’ vitamins could be called a ‘multivitamin’, right? But what you want to look for is as many high-quality, essential vitamins and minerals as possible: vitamins A, C, D, E, K and minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, copper, iodine, and potassium are non-negotiables.

ultimate multivitamin+ contains everything above, plus a thorough profile of antioxidants, trace minerals and longevity botanicals. Read the brand’s impressive notes on sourcing here.

+ Bioavailability: A supplement label may list a certain amount of a nutrient like vitamin D, but it’s crucial to know the ‘form’ that the vitamin or mineral is in. That nutrient must be ‘bioavailable’ if your body is able to absorb it well — this is where all those expensive urine jokes come into play!

mbg’s ultimate multivitamin+, for example, contains all the B vitamins in their most bioavailable forms. That includes the much buzzed about methylated folate (5-MTHF) and vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin).* These forms provide a crucial distinction for many who cannot absorb other forms of B’s -- read up on the science around it here.

We asked mindbodygreen’s Vice President of Scientific Affairs, Ashley Jordan Ferira, PhD, RDN, LRD to explain what really makes the ultimate multivitamin+ so unique:

+ A “complete” multi: We're talking 33 ingredients in this high-potency multivitamin: 6 botanical bioactives, 14 essential vitamins and 13 minerals.

+ Designed for ease: We hear so much about pill overload! The ultimate multivitamin+ gives you this truly comprehensive array for nutritional sufficiency in just 2 capsules.*

+ Fights stress: Longevity botanicals and bioactives like glutathione, resveratrol, piperine, lutein, zeaxanthin, and lycopene have been curated to fight oxidative stress, support cellular resilience, and promote graceful aging and longevity.*

+ The first multivitamin to feature clinically studied Setria® glutathione, our body’s master antioxidant.*

+ Built-in B complex: High-potency B complex delivers cellular energy via the full family of B vitamins, optimizing the bioactivity of each nutrient and even leveraging methylation technology.* Some of us have trouble utilizing certain B vitamins which has become a big hot topic in wellness lately, especially as it relates to fertility and immunity.*

+ Bioavailable + gentle: ultimate multivitamin+ contains the optimized dose, bioavailability, bioactivity, and gentleness for each ingredient:*

Organic, vegan, algal vitamin D3
Chelated and marine minerals
Methylated B vitamins
Vitamin E from sunflower oil (instead of soy, the usual source)
Carotenoids from red tomatoes and marigolds; and much more.*

Making mindbodygreen’s ultimate multivitamin+ A Routine

Like drinking enough water or fitting in movement every day, it’s all too easy to skip on the daily essentials our bodies really need most.

Consider having your blood work done to discover where you stand on basic nutrient needs. Chances are highly likely you’ve got some gaps and taking up the habit of a daily multi is the way to address.

TCM Obsessions: Artist Tasya van Ree’s The Untamed Elemental Oracle Deck

We first featured Tasya van Ree when I was included in a photography project the artist was spearheading called Women with Superpowers featuring figures from conservationist, Jane Goodall to actress, Bonnie Wright. Following along with her multidisciplinary work over the years, we were thrilled to see Tasya funnel her talent into a new deck of stunning cards, The Untamed Elemental Oracle Deck.

After using the deck for just a few days, not only do I find the deck surprisingly insightful, but so beautifully designed and written that I'm ready to frame my favorite cards from the set. Far from being prescriptive, the messages in each of the deck's cards will support reflection -- an incredibly uplifting ritual to add to your work day.

So, what is an oracle deck and how was the vision for this unique set born? We wanted to know and asked Tasya to tell us everything about her process -- and where the deep insights written into the deck came from...

Name: Tasya van Ree

Project: The Untamed Elemental Oracle Deck

What is an 'oracle deck' for the uninitiated? An oracle deck is an instrument for self-reflection that can help you navigate life with intricate insight. It is a divination tool composed of cards with specific messages meant to be used individually as a daily emotional and spiritual guide.

The amount of cards in an oracle deck can vary, and have no set number. They are free-flowing and can feature any type of content. It can also be used in union with Tarot. Unlike the oracle deck, tarot is traditionally structured and has common meanings, and detailed interpretations.

untamed elemental oracle deck

How did the idea for the cards come to life? I wanted to create an art piece that really captured the essence of what our connection to the unknown is. What purpose art has and how it is a vehicle to connect its viewer with the deeper sense of existence.

I’ve created 52 pieces of art for the deck, each of which engages the soul in a very definitive way. We are at a very specific time in history where a deeper understanding of life is necessary. This oracle deck is filled with direction, order, and beauty.

With this deck, I wanted to create something that was interactive and playful and something that would reciprocate the energy and knowledge of what the deck user was projecting.

How do you hope people use the cards? There are many different ways and techniques to use the cards and I’ve outlined a few in the guidebook. But in essence, it is all based on individual preference and what direction each person is energetically called to go with it.

Each card is infused with each person’s energy so the approach is up to them. All you have to do is attune to your intuition and be clear about what counsel you are seeking and how you’d like to be guided inward or outward.

Give us an example of an ideal ritual around the cards? Everyone I’ve spoken to about this deck tells me how engaging the cards are. That they answer their questions with such eloquence and exactness. They always tell me that they love it so much that they have gifted it to many friends and family members. That makes me happy to know that my art is expanding into homes across the world, and that they are helping people on so many levels.

I think this in itself is the ritual, learning about oneself and also sharing this richness with those you love.tasya of untamed elemental oracle deck

Each card is so wise and inspiring unto itself. what influenced you? This deck really merged all of my creative outlets into one place, from fine art to poetry. I drew deep imagery from my meditational practice and connected those lines to the physical form of my drawings. So each card really represents the alliance and bond of what each element represents to me.

It was about a two year process from start to finish. I wanted to take my time and really encode the artwork with a story and a descriptive meaning that would reverberate with everyone who came into contact with this deck. I dove deep into my stillness, and by doing that, I uncovered another language which I was able to translate here. It was so interesting to me how a shift occurred within me as well, as an artist, after completing the process. The ever-evolving form of creativity, fascinating!

The art in the deck is so beautiful. How do you describe your work? My artwork is infused with otherworldly elements of eros, alchemy, and the infinite mystery of the natural world. Cosmic, abstract, architectural and bold, with undertones of distinct and delicate details.

What other influences inspired your work? I love traveling to intriguing places, listening to lectures by great teachers and masters, diving deep into self-exploration, engaging with magical souls, demystifying everyday interactions, studying science; these things really inspire my creativity.

Anything else you want to share about intention behind the deck? Through this offering, we all have an opportunity to align with a higher power that is inherent within each of us. We are guided by the elements to travel back to the primordial still point, to our own heart space, which is always resonating with the devotional sincerity of universal love. I hope you find as much meaning and guidance when working with this deck as I did in creating it.

How to Go Vegan: 8 Tips To Help You Get Started + Avoid Overwhelm

Dominique Side is The Luxury Vegan, a concierge service based out of Houston, Texas helping folks make the often overwhelming transition into a vegan lifestyle.

As an advocate for wellness of all shapes and sizes, we recognize that there are a variety of diets can be healthy and helpful for different individuals. Whether you're a new vegan or are making a health transition of another kind, Dominique's advice is useful across the board for making big leaps one breath at a time...

8 Tips One How to Go Vegan

There are many ways to embrace a vegan lifestyle, but one thing all vegans have in common is a plant-based diet. That means avoiding all animal foods such as meat (including fish, shellfish, and insects), dairy, eggs, and honey. This is typically the first step most people take as they learn more about other facets of veganism and plenty to deal with on its own. Since we eat all day (or at least I do!), this could arguably be the most impactful, as well as the most challenging, component of one’s transition to veganism.

Embrace the journey + your own pace. You may hear people describe becoming vegan as a “journey” and it is very much that. Embrace it! As with all of life, the journey toward veganism is uniquely yours, so allow yourself to move at your own pace.

Some people manage to go vegan seemingly overnight and, if that’s what works for you, wonderful! But the last thing you’ll want to do is concern yourself with the idea of a "normal" pace if you find that you need more time. All lifestyle changes can take some getting used to, no matter what they are. There is no clock running on your transition and only you can determine your end goal.

Keep it manageable. It can be very overwhelming to eliminate all the animal products in your diet at once. If you don't plan out how you will approach your meals, you can be left very frustrated  -- and hungry! -- with no pre-planned options for those daily meals. That’s the moment in which many people abandon ship.luxury vegan services

If you are an “all or nothing” type of person like me, consider starting a food diary. Keeping a food diary for a couple weeks will help you determine the key swaps you'll need to source for the animal products you eat most. Don’t forget to consider those snacks!

If you’re a “steady wins the race” type of person, start by simply increasing the number of plant-based foods in your current diet. That could look like swapping only your lunches to all plant-based ingredients. Or perhaps you adopt “Meatless Mondays” and allow new habits with food to grow from there.

Another approach is to start with a few simple swaps at a time like mayonnaise and butter. Others take the plate-crowding approach, adjusting their portion sizes by using more and more plant foods that eventually crowd out animal products altogether.

There are so many options! One is sure to suit you.

Balance your meals. There are so many fun vegan alternatives available these days that weren’t even in existence five years ago. Remember that "vegan” is not necessarily synonymous with “healthy”. It could be very exciting at first to eat vegan junk food all day, but don’t get caught up in a cycle that doesn't truly benefiit your health.

Although, in general, a whole, plant-based diet is preferable to the Standard American Diet, it is recommended that you consult a healthcare professional that is familiar with your medical history and who specializes in diet assessment when making a big change like this.

One way to be sure you’re getting the nutrition you need while changing your diet is to whip out that food diary I mentioned. Keeping track of what you’re eating, and the portion sizes you consume, can give you a good idea of any adjustments you need to make and what gaps should be filled with supplements.

One easy thing to remember? Color is key! Typically, the best gauge you can use for a balanced diet is to incorporate a variety of different colored foods. You’ll cover a lot of bases using that approach.

Be adventurous! When your plate is centered around meat, you tend to rotate between the same four or five main courses and cycle through a few side dishes repeatedly. One of the things that I discovered after becoming acclimated to veganism was that my meals became way more varied.

Stepping outside of your comfort zone to explore the many options available can open a whole new world. The internet is your best friend when it comes to accessing recipes from any and every cuisine. You can also use recipe research to create dishes from basic items in your pantry. Grab that phone or tablet and start taking an inventory of your pantry, fridge, and freezer. You’ll be surprised at what you can create with the same old staples.

Remain open.Change requires learning. When you know better, you do better. The most successful journeys are built on a solid foundation of education. Decide that you'll never stop learning!

Going vegan comes with a steep learning curve depending on how you approach it. You’re essentially undoing a lifetime of conditioning and relearning how to make compassion-based choices on a new level. Although the word vegan may be trendy, the number of people who identify as vegan is very small. The concept of veganism is still new to many people and, in that, there will be challenges.

As much as you may think that the information you gather is solely to facilitate your own transition, you will find that you spend a significant amount of time educating those around you. Patience is key. You may find yourself explaining to the server at a restaurant what makes your meal vegan or consulting with the grocery store manager about a product. Allow yourself time and space for that aspect of the journey.

Seek support. Becoming vegan will have you questioning the most basic habits… "How do I bake cookies without eggs?" "Where can I buy vegan chocolate?" “What makes waffles non-vegan?” "How do I survive a holiday gathering with my family?” Everyone who has made the vegan transition has been there!

Seek support as you go vegan. There are so many resources and groups and resources online, all dedicated to sharing information about veganism. There are also many apps you can download to help you find vegan restaurants, brands and sample meal plans

Remember, never be afraid to ask questions! Everyone has had them in the process of becoming vegan.

Prioritize your purpose. The one thing that will keep you focused on your journey through all the adjustment, education and social change in becoming vegan is to keep in mind why you became vegan in the first place.

It could be that your current focus is health, but as you learn more about veganism, you become more aware of animal cruelty concerns or the exploitation or the environment.

Most people find that going vegan is much easier than they thought, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have challenging days. When you find yourself stressed and need those familiar comfort foods, return to your purpose. Watch something uplifting that reinforces your convictions, find cute animal photos, go on a walk and appreciate the nature around you, revisit your health goals and congratulate yourself on the progress you’ve made thus far. There are many ways to keep yourself grounded and bring you back to the moment you made the decision to go vegan.

Extend yourself grace. No one is perfect. If you find yourself feeling discouraged, don’t give up! There are more reasons to stick with the commitment you’ve made than go against it. Your friends and family may not understand your decision, but don’t let that deter you.

A great way to prepare for social gatherings that may not have vegan-friendly options (weddings, baby showers, corporate functions, etc.) is to eat an enjoyable meal beforehand. Then you can nibble on whatever may be available while socializing with confidence.

When the people close to you make strange comments about your new diet, it usually stems from a sense of being indirectly judged by your decision. Those comments can also come from a place of ignorance surrounding the vegan lifestyle. Once you recognize that it isn’t personal, you’ll be better equipped to speak from a compassionate place and not internalize their projections.

Hard conversations will happen, doubts around the big change you've made will creep in. These are certainties. At the end of the day, remember that you are human, and you’ve made a conscious decision to live with compassion. Remember to treat yourself with the same compassion you’ve committed to showing animals and the planet!

Finally, the hard and fast rule for going vegan: always keep a snack handy!

The Reviews Are In On Scarlett Johansson’s New Skincare Line

The reviews are in on Scarlett Johansson's new skincare line. That is to say, our review is in. As one of the earliest online magazines to cover clean beauty, what more do you need?

While we often grimace at the idea of a new celebrity beauty brand, this product launch hit different. We approached this month's skincare news with a touch of caution, but darned if there's not something about Scarlett's career trajectory that simply breeds trust.

scarlett johansson outset skincareThe actress is a top-earner in Hollywood of late, thanks to her impressive role in the Marvel franchise, a role that, miraculously, did not infringe on our view of her as an independent creative. With a life-long record for making good films, and a no-nonsense presence with the press, Johansson's good taste makes her easy to love and an intriguing brand founder.

Joining forces with co-founder, Kate Foster, a fashion and beauty exec with a passion for consumer experience, we expect the new brand, named The Outset, to land firmly amongst the clean beauty greats. Here's our review...

The Packaging: Nothing to see here. The Outset's launch collection is clad entirely in glass bottles with white lids and caps -- as utilitarian as things get. In fact, Scarlett calls out a good white t-shirt as inspiration for the brand as a whole. “My goal was to simplify beauty with a focus on everyday essentials,” says Scarlett on The Outset site. “I wanted The Outset to be universal, approachable, and as reliable as your favorite white tee – a classic staple.”

On top of that, The Outset formulas are all dye and fragrance-free for a vibe that minimalists will love, clean beauty pragmatists will appreciate -- and many a boyfriend will steal. As many other quality brands have proven recently, one of the best ways to enter a noisy and crowded space is to do so calmly and quietly.

the outset skincare

The Product line: The Outset consists of five basic, yet highly functional products free of fragrance, parabens, sulfates, phthalates and gluten; a micellar cleanser, multi-functional serum, squalane-based moisturizer, niacinamide night cream and eye cream with vitamin C and E.

As a working actor, Scarlett learned a lot about the sensitivity and breakouts that come with "overworking" the skin. According to InStyle, "Scarlett realized that there were so many products that were focused on resurfacing the skin, which led it to be raw and aggravated. She says it took a long time for her to realize that replenishing her skin's moisture levels was very healing."

It's true that while the clean beauty space is now filled with highly effective products, there is a time and place for cleansers and creams that help us to maintain equilibrium amidst all those actives and special treatments.

The stand-outs from the line became clear to us right away, though before writing this review, we've only had a chance to use everything for a few weeks...

+ The Outset's Restorative Niacinamide Night Cream  ...is a total dream. Not too heavy, but immediately restorative. If you're a skincare fiend, you'll love this night cream as a counterbalance to that bi-weekly retinal or peel. The niacinamide provides a deeply nourishing effect that may help your skin heal and recover from more active treatments. As with all night creams and moisturizing masks, this cream is also a fantastic in-flight buddy!

+ The Outset's Gentle Micellar Antioxidant Cleanser We're big fans of oil and balm cleansers, however there's something to be said for a good gel cleanser that can get things done in a flash. If you're looking for something simple, gentle and easy, this micellar cleanser removes makeup and cleanses without any drying sulfates. We like to use it at the end of the day for a deep cleaning (thanks to the micelles), plus a dose of amino acids and antioxidants that are still suitable for sensitive skin.

Everything in The Outset's new line is also unisex. In fact, the eye cream went directly to a staff member's husband, in hopes that the 'Avenger'-related product could spark new routines.

The Consensus  | Overall, The Outset has been a hit with our team. The price points are reasonable for clean luxury products and we can imagine ourselves putting these products to good use between more high-impact treatments -- something the beauty world doesn't talk about often enough. Too many active treatments and ingredients can leave skin over-worked and lead to sensitization. Sensitized skin can be thought of as skin that has burn out. Break-outs, redness, dryness and sensitivity can all occur with sensitization, simply because we've just put our skin through too much.

Take stock of your skincare routine and consider adding a few more gentle, clean basics like these from The Outset if you notice that your beauty rituals are full of too many actives.

Mornings with Funny Girl Arielle Vandenberg of Rel Beauty

Some of comedy's most celebrated figures swear that you cannot be both good-looking and funny, but we dare you to follow Arielle Vandenberg on Instagram and tell us that's really true.

If you're not already one of Arielle's million and a half followers on Instagram, visit her feed with caution -- you may fall into hours of content before you're able to put down your phone. Light snorting, highly likely.

As the recent host of CBS' Love Island, Arielle's audience has only grown and a few months back, she launched her first brand, Rel Beauty. We asked her to send us Rel's first drop, a line of pigment-rich lip balms and the samples were as good as we'd hoped (special shout out to shades, For Sure and Totally.) They're made clean, packaged irresistibly and come in a range of flattering colors that just might change your life.

To celebrate the launch and welcome a new clean beauty founder into the space, we asked Arielle to join our Mornings With series. Check out her day and pop to Instagram for more goodness.

My Biz: Rel Beauty, we just dropped our first product, an essential lip balm!

Current mantra: My current and forever mantra is Go with the flow.

What most people know me for: I think most people would know me from the content I’ve created on social media, my comedic sketches -- and also being the host of Love Island US on CBS.

A day in the life lately, includes...On the best days, horseback riding at some point! It brings me so much joy!

Coffee or matcha? I gave up drinking coffee on New Year's. So now I am a tea girl! I love a matcha latte with some simple syrup and coconut milk!

Go to workout:Dancing anywhere and everywhere that I can. That and Pilates.

Currently reading: Every day I read from a book called New Morning Mercies by Paul Tripp. It’s a daily devotional that I love starting my day with.

Inspo behind Rel in a nutshell: I wanted to create a brand that was effortless, clean and not fussy! I love 70's surf culture and wanted it to have the feel of a clean product you might find in a surf shop!

rel beauty review

When I'm not working on Rel, I'm....usually trying to shoot a comedy sketch for my Instagram.

Go-to health meal at home: I love making soup! I love any type of soup, but recently I've been obsessed with white bean and kale.

3 clean beauty favorites lately:Angela Caglia: Soufflé Moisturizer, Necessaire Body Wash and Merit Brow 1980 Volumizing Eyebrow Pomade Gel. (All TCM Editor-approved!)

Fave Rel product: Our No Duh Essential Lip Balm in the shade 'Frick Yes'!

Best advice I ever received on wellness:Drink more water.

On women + body image... I’m happy to see women embracing their bodies and celebrating them, being grateful for their capabilities and learning to appreciate themselves inside and out.

When I'm stressed, I... go find and pet horses at the nearest barn.

What I've learned this year: I’ve learned to have more patience during this time. It’s crazy that everything in the world slowed down, but was still so chaotic. Back to my daily 'mantra', learning to be patient and let things happen when they are meant to is very important to me.

Fave spots in L.A. lately:Broom General Store for a cute little coffee date, any barn that has horses, and The Magic Castle is my favorite place ever!

Other Online inspirations lately: Jimmy Darts and Isaiah Garza

A Santa Barbara Citrus + Avocado Salad With Pistachio Dukkah

Spring has sprung and we're reveling in the mood. Earlier this month, manifestation coach, Jessie de Lowe hosted the beautiful lunch shown here that gave us all the feels for the coming season. The menu, made by west-bourne's Camilla Marcus (shown above), showcases the best that Santa Barbara has to offer in this transitional season. Using her own pistachio dukkah as inspiration, Camilla whipped up this simple, but stunning salad, reflecting her sustainable approach to food overall.

santa barbara patio

Much of the produce used in this drool-worthy spread was provided by Apeel, a sustainable brand we first met at this delicious event. Apeel makes an innovative edible 'peel' for produce that helps avocados and the like stay fresher longer, reducing food waste and elongating shelf life in a way that's both natural and safe.
spring party decorations
Because we know you'll ask, this incredible picnic set-up -- tassled umbrellas included -- was provided by Santa Barbara Picnic Co. The stunning, modern florals are by  Forma Floral.

Camilla's recipe proves that fresh, whole produce can stand (nearly) on its own. We adore this dish's unique combination of citrus fruit and olives dressed in herbs and spices that only inspire our condiment obsession further! Try it at home as the weather warms and let us know what you think...

Candice Kumai’s Green Lasagna With Kale Marinara Sauce

Plans to Cozy up this weekend? Before you dive headfirst into a vat of mac 'n cheese (unless it's this insanely healthy version), consider cleaned up comfort food recipes like this one from Candice Kumai's Clean Green Eats. Candice's nutrient-dense, kale marinara sauce is a wonder-working recipe we're relying on to keep us cozy.

We also love the idea of making this clean, green lasagna even healthier by swapping out the ricotta for cashew cheese! Nom nom...

Candice Kumai's Clean, Green Lasagna

Serves 6

INGREDIENTS:

olive oil cooking spray, for the baking dish
2 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
1⁄2 yellow onion, finely chopped
4 cups sliced cremini mushrooms
2 cups shredded lacinato kale leaves
2 cups part-skim ricotta cheese (or try making cashew cheese!)
3 cups Homemade Kale Marinara Sauce (recipe below)
6 no-boil lasagna sheet noodles

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat the oven to 375 ̊F. Lightly spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with olive oil cooking spray and set aside.

In a large sauté pan, warm the olive oil over medium-low heat. Add the onion and cook until translucent, 6 to 8 minutes. Add the mushrooms and shredded kale, and cook for an additional 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat, and let cool slightly.

Put the ricotta cheese in a large bowl, and, using a spatula, gently fold in the cooled mushroom-kale mixture until completely incorporated.

Assemble the lasagna

Using the prepared baking dish, assemble the lasagna in six layers as follows: 1 cup Homemade Kale Marinara, spread evenly; 3 lasagna noodle sheets (arranged in a single layer); 3⁄4 cup of the kale-mushroom-and ricotta mixture, spread evenly. Repeat the layering a second time, then top with the remaining kale-mushroom-and ricotta mixture, and finish with the grated Pecorino or Romano on top. Cover with aluminum foil, and bake in the preheated oven, on the middle rack, for about 25 minutes.

After 20 minutes have passed, remove the foil from the baking dish and move the baking dish to the top rack. To finish, bake, uncovered, for another 5 to 10 minutes, depending on how you love your lasagna finished.

Remove the lasagna from the oven and cool for 5 to 10 minutes before cutting and serving.

Candice's Kale Marinara Sauce

Yields 4 cups

INGREDIENTS:

2 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
1 yellow onion, finely chopped
4 garlic cloves, finely minced
Two 28-ounce cans unsalted organic crushed tomatoes
1⁄4 cup fresh oregano leaves
1⁄4 tsp sea salt
2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
1 cup finely julienned lacinato kale leaves

DIRECTIONS:

In a large stockpot, warm the extra-virgin olive oil over low heat. Add the diced onion and cook for about 10 minutes, or until soft. Add the garlic and sauté for another 3 minutes on low heat.

Add the crushed tomatoes and fresh oregano leaves and give the sauce a good stir. Cook on low for about 2 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.

When the sauce has reduced and thickened, finish with the sea salt, balsamic vinegar, and julienned kale. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes and serve or use in recipes as needed.

How To Build A Meal In A Bowl: Fridge-To-Face In 7 Steps

There are days for Ottolenghi tarts and gluten-free baking experiments and then there are the other 364 in which we're building bowls and smoothies based on just one equation: what's in the fridge. Elise Museles of Kale & Chocolate is on the exact same page, and is dishing out perfect tips on building a meal in a bowl quicker and easier than ever...

Creating simple and beautiful meals is my passion.

I’m certainly not a gourmet chef. I don’t wield a knife like the culinary greats. I don’t care about the difference between bâtonneting & chiffonading. I’ve never spent years sweating it out as a sous chef in a Michelin-starred restaurant.

The truth is that most of the time I don’t even cook with a recipe. Collecting new ingredients and precisely following instructions is a complete drag.

Instead of feeling strained with my overloaded schedule, I decided to hop on life’s roller coaster and find a way to create nourishing meals that fit seamlessly into the day-to-day madness. The secret? A “no recipe” approach to assembling beautiful meals.

natural harry nourish bowl

the natural harry nourish bowl

All you need is to set aside some time to shop and then prep your food in advance. (I proclaim Sunday “kitchen fun day” – good music, good conversation, and lots of chopping, steaming, stirring, grilling and roasting.) When you're exhausted, hungry and ready to eat throughout the week, all your food is waiting for you to be thrown together into a bowl. You’ll never have to wonder, “what’s for dinner” again.

Here’s my simple guide to building balanced, nourishing and delicious meals in a bowl that will be your saving grace:

How To Build A Meal In A Bowl: Fridge-To-Face In 7 Steps

Bowls are like the “little black dress” of meal planning. Your bowl is filled with staples like whole grains, protein, healthy fats and tons of veggies. Then you add a few key “accessories” to spice it up.

To make sure that the bowls are balanced in flavor, texture and nutrition, choose at least one ingredient from each category. (Bonus points for going heavy on the veggies.)

START WITH A BASE OF LEAFY GREENS:

Spinach, kale, shredded Brussels sprouts, Swiss chard, Mustard greens, arugula, bok choy, pea shoots

ADD UNLIMITED RAW, ROASTED, STEAMED OR GRILLED VEGGIES:

Carrots, peppers, beets, roasted eggplant, asparagus, Brussels, broccoli, cauliflower, bean sprouts, green beans, mushrooms, zucchini, tomatoes, shredded cabbage, onion

TOSS IN A GRAIN OR STARCH:

Quinoa, brown rice, wild rice, faro, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, soba (buckwheat) noodles

INCLUDE PROTEIN:

Chickpeas, black beans, lentils, salmon, tuna, grilled chicken, edamame, veggie burgers, hard-boiled eggs

DON’T FORGET THE HEALTHY FATS:

Seeds, nuts, avocado, drizzle of pumpkin, coconut or olive oil

TOP IT OFF WITH DRESSINGS + SAUCES:

Hummus, lemon/lime squeeze & olive oil, tahini, salsa, pesto, miso ginger sauce, tamari

EXTRA CREDIT FOR SOME NUTRITIONAL BOOSTS:

Fresh herbs, hemp seeds, sesame seeds, a fried egg (it’s a thing!), nutritional yeast, seaweed

5 Ways to Prevent Mold in the Kitchen According To the Mold Medic

Mold toxicity can be tough to diagnosis and even more difficult to treat, especially if mold in your own home is at fault. As always, prevention is key -- and learning to properly care for your home's kitchen could help.

Michael Rubino specializes in working with people who are immunocompromised or have acute and sustained reactions to mold exposure, helping thousands of families heal, working to bring broader awareness to the medical systems and is the the author of an accessible book on the topic, The Mold Medic

In his piece below, Rubino details practical tips to help prevent mold in the one of the home's most vulnerable spaces, the kitchen....

Even for those who hate cooking, kitchens are happy places within the home. They’re the places we go hunting down a midnight snack, make lunch for the family, and let's not forget, the keeper of that beautiful coffee machine. We’re not the only ones in love with these indoor spaces, though. Mold, that fungus among us, loves these rooms as well, and there just so happens to be a million and one places for it to sneakily start growing.

With its ability to impact our health from prolonged exposure, knowing where to look for mold and how to prevent it from growing in the first place are phenomenal ways to help make sure the hearts of our homes remain safe and healthy spaces.

The Health Impact of Mold at Home

There’s a common misconception that since mold is everywhere, exposure to this indoor contaminant isn’t a big deal. Yes, it’s true that the average individual will encounter a few moldy particles throughout the day while driving to pick up the kids from school or walking into work. With so many species and the ability for spores to zip anywhere, it’s an impossible encounter to avoid. However, experiencing indoor mold growth isn’t quite the same as encountering mold in nature.

Keep in mind that the particles in question are tiny. Mold spores can range from 2–4 microns, a unit of measurement that’s one-millionth of a meter. Some species of mold also release microscopic toxins called mycotoxins when they feel threatened, which are even smaller and average around 0.1 microns. Their teeny size means that they’re not only ingestable, but they can also fly right into our respiratory system when we breathe.

mold toxicity at home

In an everyday encounter, the immune system will quickly and efficiently get rid of any of these foreign particles that enter the body. When mold is growing in locations such as our kitchens, though, our bodies aren’t just facing a few particles throughout the day. As soon as that mold starts growing, it releases spores and sometimes mycotoxins into that indoor space, many of which remain trapped within the walls of the home.

This situation lowers the indoor air quality, contaminates the surfaces within, and constantly batters the body of anyone living inside with foreign particles. The body will attempt to keep up, but the immune system can eventually get run down and malfunction, leading to a long list of potential adverse health reactions. Not everyone responds to mold exposure the same way, though. While one person may have the occasional runny nose, another may develop 11 symptoms. Factors such as genetics, preexisting conditions, species of mold, and the presence of mycotoxins all play a role.

The health implications of living in a toxic environment are why it’s so important to actively work to prevent mold from taking root in places like the kitchen. That involves removing the opportunities for growth, checking the places that can allow for hidden colonies, and actively eliminating mold spores as well.

5 Important Ways to Prevent Mold in the Kitchen

The 100,000 species of mold in the world reproduce by creating microscopic spores and releasing them into the air. These spores ride the air current to wherever that leads, oftentimes right through our own front door. Like the seeds of a plant, these spores will remain tiny particles until they land on a surface with the elements they need to transition into a living colony.

The two main components needed for a spore to begin living are food and moisture. Both of which happen to be in abundance in our kitchen. Food sources abound, from dust and particles from cooking to other random organic matter introduced every day. Moisture gets added to the picture by things such as cooking, the sink faucet, dishwasher, cooking, coffee pot, and/or tea kettle.

If these elements are available on a surface for 24–48 hours, a mold spore can start to grow. Once it begins to colonize the space, it will start the reproduction cycle and begin releasing spores into the surrounding area.

Here are the top five places to get started on mold-proofing any kitchen...

01. Underneath the Sink and Cabinets

Chances are, underneath the sink and inside cabinets don’t get a whole lot of time in the spotlight. This can allow for a small hidden leak to go undetected for some time, or moisture from high humidity to build up, giving a lucky mold spore the perfect place to call home. Particles such as dust and all sorts of yummy organic matter can also build up, providing the perfect food source.

Regularly inspecting and cleaning these spaces can help prevent a moldy problem from occurring. To check this off of that kitchen maintenance list, follow the steps below every month or so:

Remove all items from the cabinets
Check the entire interior with a flashlight
Throw on some gloves
HEPA vacuum all surfaces inside (these machines are required to remove at least 99.7% of particles up to 0.3 microns in size)
Spray white vinegar or a botanical cleaning product onto a microfiber rag (these are 100 times better at wiping away small particles than regular rags)
Wipe all surfaces inside and outside of the cabinet
Allow the interior to dry completely before replacing everything and closing the door

Extra tip: To further prevent mold in cabinets, be sure to keep indoor humidity levels around 30-50% and focus on creating airflow by turning on the exhaust fans while cooking. Also, never use bleach to get rid of or prevent mold growth. It won’t properly remove particles from the surfaces, leaving contamination behind and allowing exposure to continue.

02. The Sink Faucet

Sink faucets are the rockstars of the kitchen, but they create a constant water source for mold spores. Between that, particles floating around the kitchen, and mineral buildup, these can become hotspots for mold growth. Not only is that an active mold factory in the kitchen, but it’s also adding contamination to any water that comes through the facet, all of which is a health no-no.

To avoid this fiasco, try this:

Clean the faucet head by tying a plastic bag filled with vinegar to it and allowing it to soak for a few hours. Overnight is even better. Vinegar is a descaler and will break up any mineral buildup that can support mold. After the soak, spray the entire fixture with vinegar and then wipe everything thoroughly with a microfiber towel; you can gently use a small brush like a toothbrush for any hard-to-reach areas. For the aerator, gently clean it with vinegar once every six months.

If there are any existing leaks, fix them ASAP so there aren’t any additional watery opportunities that will allow mold to grow.

03. The Coffee Maker

Unfortunately, this fungus among us loves that coffee maker just as much as we do. Between the coffee grinds, the million and one particles kicked up during kitchen use, mineral buildup, and frequent water use, they’re oases for mold growth. The gaskets inside the machine can also trap moisture, leading to unwanted moldy problems.

To keep that bean water machine mold-free, the goal is to keep the machine as dry and clean as possible. This includes daily washing of any removable parts, including the water reservoir, filter, carafe, and landing tray. Allow these to dry completely before placing them back. While these are drying, spray the surface of the coffee machine with a botanical cleaner like Benefect Decon 30 and wipe it down with a microfiber towel.

At least once a month, deep clean these machines with a descaler. Every machine is different, so make sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions on the best cleaning product to use and what steps to take. Typically, you can fill the reservoir with a mixture of white vinegar and water, let it brew halfway, and then allow that mixture to sit inside the machine for about an hour. Finish the cycle, dump that water, spray everything down with the white vinegar, and wipe it with a microfiber rag. Refill the reservoir with water, and run a few brews to get rid of the excess vinegar.

04. The Refrigerator Water Spout

These can allow for hidden mold growth for some time before the problem is discovered, leading to seriously contaminated drinking water. Like many kitchen appliances, they’re the perfect dream home for a lucky mold spore: water is in abundance and edible options come in the form of food particles, dust, organic matter, and mineral buildup, all of which allow for mold growth.

Preventing this scenario means a deep clean of that water spout at least once a month. Before getting started, though, check their manufacturer’s manual to get a full breakdown of which parts can be removed and their suggestions on cleaning; every refrigerator is different.

From there:

Turn the water dispenser and ice maker (if applicable) off.

Tackle any removable pieces and wash them. This includes spraying them down either with white vinegar or a botanical cleaner, then wiping everything with a microfiber cloth. Afterward, wash with warm water and soap, rinse, and air dry. Use a small brush like a toothbrush if needed to thoroughly clean all of the little cracks and crevices. If the ice maker is connected, remove and clean the box and the area where the ice enters the fridge too.

From there, spray down the entire unit. Wipe every reachable area, including the water nozzle itself. A small brush or pipe cleaner can help get into the hard-to-reach places that mold loves. Some dispensers can click out and allow more access, but double-check that manual before attempting to remove it.

Allow everything to dry completely before replacing any removable parts.

For even more anti-mold power, clean the water line once every 6–12 months.

05. The Dishwasher

These are a pretty obvious bet to become an icky, moldy spot in the kitchen. Their main function involves a barrage of water, and they blast food particles everywhere. Without proper maintenance, mold can easily grow within the machine, which means all of those clean dishes are being covered in all sorts of harmful particles every time the machine turns on.

To prevent this, deep clean the machine at least once a month. Again, check the manufacturer’s instructions for their cleaning recommendations as each machine is different.

Typically, steps to deep clean the machine include:

Remove all the removable pieces of the machine.

Spray each piece with white vinegar or a botanical cleaner, scrub, rinse, and wipe with a microfiber towel. Leave them out to air dry when finished.

Next, clean the dishwasher filter next; rely on the manufacturer’s manual for a removal and cleaning guide.

Spray all of the corners, parts, and crevices inside of the dishwasher and scrub with a small brush. This includes the area that houses the filter and the drain opening. Use a larger brush and take care of the sides, top, and bottom as well.

Wipe every part down, inside and out, with microfiber towels.

Move on to the interior and exterior of the door next. Spray with your cleaning product and wipe with a microfiber towel.

Replace all of the parts.

Place 1-2 cups of vinegar in a dishwasher-safe bowl, place this on the top rack, and run a dishwashing cycle on the hottest setting.

When this cycle is finished, leave the door open so that it can dry completely.

A few other tips for a clean dishwashing machine include rinsing off dishes before putting them inside, checking the filter once a week for built-up particles, wiping the door gaskets and rubber parts weekly, and leaving the door open when not in use to make sure the interior remains dry.

A Clean and Healthy Kitchen

At the end of the day, when the average person breathes 20,000 breaths a day and most of those inhalations are taken right within our own homes, it’s important to actively work on keeping these spaces safe. That way, we can focus on what matters most: making memories and spending quality time with friends and family. Since kitchens are at the top of the moldy hotspot list and common areas we hang out in the most, they are fantastic places to start to ensure your indoor environment is contaminant-free and promoting ongoing health.

Ask Dr. Will Cole: How Many Glasses of Wine Is Too Many?

Some health experts claim that the healthiest daily drink count is zero, but leading functional medicine pro, Dr. Will Cole says there is no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to alcohol.

Most wellness-attuned foodies live a life of moderation somewhere between sobriety and a second glass of sauvignon blanc on a Thursday night. We've partnered with Surely to talk about the potential advantages of drinking less alcohol, while still pairing good meals and friendly hangs with something satisfying, fun and elegant to drink. Surely is the maker of low-sugar and alcohol-free wines crafted by from award-winning California winemakers.

Dr Will Cole On Wine + The Health Hazards of Too Much Alcohol

Cutting back on anything we enjoy can be challenging. Kudos to you if you love an evening glass of wine and have even read this far! To inspire and inform our journey cutting back on wine consumption, we asked Dr. Will Cole to explain the potential health hazards of over-imbibing.

What he had to say about alcohol and gut health especially, may surprise you...

dr will cole
Dr. Will Cole, leading functional medicine expert, IFMCP, DNM, DC,
and author of Ketotarian, The Inflammation Spectrum, and Intuitive Fasting

Just like everything else in functional medicine, there is no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to alcohol. Some people can handle a higher alcohol consumption while others would be better off avoiding it altogether. But for the most part, alcohol can be enjoyed in moderation. Just listen to your body and take note of how you feel.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying a glass or two of alcohol with friends, but if you are health conscious, you've probably wondered what kind of impact it can have on your health. In my telehealth functional medicine clinic, I consult patients all the time on how much alcohol is too much and why it can be harmful to your health, particularly your gut. Yes, your gut, which just happens to be the foundation of your overall health. Here are a few ways that alcohol overconsumption can impact your gut health:

01. Increases inflammation levels Studies have shown that drinking too much can actually increase levels of the endotoxin, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in the gut, which is known to contribute to leaky gut syndrome and increased inflammation.  In fact, research has shown that people who regularly consume alcohol have higher levels of the inflammatory C-reactive protein.
02. Inhibits nutrient absorption | When your gut lining is damaged, it also inhibits your body's ability to properly absorb and utilize important nutrients from food. That is why a lot of people who have leaky gut syndrome can also be deficient in everyday nutrients.
03. Disrupts microbiome balance |  If you aren't able to properly absorb nutrients from foods or supplements, your gut isn't getting the necessary fuel to feed the good bacteria in your gut, leading to imbalances in the microbiome and conditions like SIBO and candida overgrowth that can contribute to autoimmune conditions and other gut health problems.
04. Hinders cognitive function |Chances are, if you have leaky gut syndrome you are more likely to struggle with brain fog, anxiety, or other brain health problems due to what is known as the gut-brain axis. The same proteins that govern gut permeability also control the permeability of your blood brain barrier, so if your gut lining is damaged, the blood brain barrier is also likely damaged. Studies have shown that even moderate alcohol intake can affect your memory.

A Fun + Healthy Way To Cut Back On Your Wine Consumption

If Dr. Will's concerns surrounding gut health and alcohol consumption resonate with you, consider cutting back or going dry for a season. This is where having a case of Surely on hand can be so practical!

+ Use Surely to moderate your wine intake | Lets say you're thirsting for a glass of white wine at the end of a long workday on a Friday. Open a bottle of Surely's Sauvignon Blanc and enjoy a crisp glass while winding down and making dinner. You won't experience a blood sugar crash or waylay plans for an evening workout. Want to open a wine with alcohol at dinner? Move on to that bottle of wine knowing you greatly reduced your intake earlier for a more balanced evening!

Drop Acid: Dr. Perlmutter On Uric Acid, Tart Cherries + Your Metabolism

In his new book, Drop Acid, board-certified neurologist and six-time New York Times bestselling author, Dr. David Perlmutter delivers a compelling look at uric acid. Having reviewed over 400, peer-reviewed, high quality scientific studies, Perlmutter extracts what we really need to know about managing our uric acid levels day to day and convinces us of just how key this metric can be for our overall health.

In our interview below, Dr. Perlmutter shares a few key takeaways from the book. Like most wellness proponents we admire, he urges readers to adjust their perspective on healthcare, prioritizing personal lifestyle adjustments over medical finger-crossing:

"We live in a world where the messaging seems to be that when we develop a threatening health situation, there will be a medical fix readily available. Unfortunately, that mentality is deeply flawed. Each of us holds the cards that can determine our health destiny and we should feel empowered by that. Controlling our uric acid levels offers us another powerful tool to accomplish this goal."

Enter to win Dr. Perlmutter's VIP gift from the book launch -- including a signed copy of Drop Acid, plus uric acid monitor and bookmark. Details below...

drop acid book
Congratulations on the new book, Dr. Perlmutter. What's the core message you want people to understand in the book and because of this new research?  The biggest threats to human health, globally, are diseases that result from abnormal metabolism.
Yes, exercise, diet and other lifestyle choices are important in terms of keeping our metabolism in check. But, controlling our uric acid levels offers us a powerful new tool for regaining metabolic health. Frequently overlooked as a “waste product” of metabolism, high levels of uric acid actually threatens so many aspects of our health
You mention that managing uric acid levels is now proven to be key in managing our overall health. Who should be especially interested in this? Uric acid, when elevated, has now been shown to threaten health in virtually everyone, young and old, male or female. And those with chronic conditions like high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, overweight or obesity, coronary heart disease, and even dementia are especially at risk to the health threats brought on by uric acid elevation.
Let's talk about tart cherry juice. Why is tart cherry so helpful in managing uric acid levels? Why cherries and not pomegranate or other red fruits? Tart cherry juice, specifically, has been recommended to lower uric acid for at least two decades, and with good reason. There is excellent scientific data that shows its effectiveness. Tart cherries contain bioflavonoids that target an important enzyme that makes uric acid in the body.
What  are the top 5 lifestyle of dietary habits people should takeaway from the book? For regaining metabolic health:

+ Measure: Get into the habit of either measuring your uric acid regularly, or have your healthcare practitioner make this happen for you.

+ Reduce, dramatically, fructose consumption.

+ Consider time-restricted eating.

+ Add quercitin, a dietary supplement, 500mg daily.

+ Consider a wearable device to help you learn more about the quality and quantity of your sleep.

What's one of your favorite facts or takeaways from the book? Our hard-core audience will read it cover to cover, but why should skeptics be interested in this topic? Drop Acid was written based on my review of over 400, peer-reviewed, high quality scientific studies. Much of the world has been aware of the central role of uric acid elevation in metabolic mayhem for many years. It’s time that everyone gains the advantage of this knowledge.

There is a rumor that green bean juice can fight uric acid? True? Green been juice is not on the top of the list in terms of helping lower uric acid. The most effective vegetable is probably red onion!

Is there anything else you'd like to share that we've left out? We live in a world where the messaging seems to be that when we develop a threatening health situation, there will be a medical fix readily available. Unfortunately, that mentality is deeply flawed. Each of us holds the cards that can determine our health destiny and we should feel empowered by that. Controlling our uric acid levels offers us another powerful tool to accomplish this goal.
