Recent inspiration: While on a recent trip home to Africa, I went up into the bush to set up our partnership with an eco-hospitality group (Singita) and trained local artisans to craft Amanu sandals for their guests—it was so incredible. I also just reread one of my favorite books, The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.

Favorite natural + eco-friendly materials: At the moment I am completely fascinated by all the amazing innovative fabrics and materials coming onto the market. Fabrics made from pineapple fibers, orange peel and kombucha; I recently came across one made out of moth threads! It’s funny, since the concept of Amanu I have become quite neurotic about our materials.

Sadly, while as many people eat meat as they do, in my opinion leather is the most sustainable option. I know this doesn't address deforestation or animal cruelty issues, however I don't want to get sucked in because of the 'vegan' catchword. Some natural fabrics are incredible, but many, while wanting to share a wonderful message, are not necessarily good for the environment. They don't last, hence people have to re-buy more frequently and the discarded items do not decompose well, if at all. To make and treat some of the materials they use releases way more chemicals and toxins than leather. It's obviously a very complicated issue, one that I try and educate myself on daily—and there are no black and white answers unfortunately.

My mission in one sentence: Change the way people buy sandals by altering the category with a more sustainable model.

Something in my closet I will own forever: My family signet ring that has my family crest on it. It’s something old English families wear. I love looking at my hands and knowing where I am from and feeling that connection.

Style or design trend I'm most excited about: Fabrics made from recycled materials.

Everything You Should Know About The Impressive Benefits of Moringa

Moringa is an amazing adaptogen with an ability to boost energy, balance hormones and combat the effects of aging. Never heard of moringa before? Although this plant was initially discovered for its beneficial properties thousands of years ago, only recently has moringa (sometimes called the Ben oil tree) become known as one of the most impressive herbal supplements to hit the holistic health market. In fact, in 2008 the National Institute of Health called moringa (moringa oleifera) the “plant of the year,” acknowledging that “perhaps like no other single species, this plant has the potential to help reverse multiple major environmental problems and provide for many unmet human needs.” Clearly, moringa benefits are highly touted and deservedly so.

To date, over 1,300 studies, articles and reports have focused on moringa benefits and this plant’s healing abilities that are important in parts of the world that are especially susceptible to disease outbreak and nutritional deficiencies. Research shows that just about every part of the moringa plant can be utilized in some way, whether it’s to make a potent antioxidant tea or produce an oily substance that lubricates and nourishes the skin. Throughout the world, moringa is used for treating such widespread conditions as: inflammation-related diseases, cancer, diabetes, anemia, arthritis and other joint pain, such as rheumatism, allergies and asthma, constipation, stomach pains and and diarrhea, epilepsy, stomach and intestinal ulcers or spasms, chronic headaches, heart problems, including high blood pressure, kidney stones, fluid retention, thyroid disorders, low sex drive, bacterial, fungal, viral and parasitic infections...

Moringa is an excellent source of protein, vitamin A, potassium, calcium and vitamin C. Just how strong is moringa? According to Kuli Kuli, an organization that harvests moringa plants in Africa and makes them accessible to customers in the the U.S. and other western nations, gram for gram, moringa contains: two times the amount of protein of yogurt, four times the amount of vitamin A as carrots, three times the amount of potassium as bananas, four times the amount of calcium as cows’ milk, and seven times the amount of vitamin C as oranges...

6 Proven Moringa Benefits

Moringa is known by over 100 names in different languages around the world. This easy-to-grow tropical plant species, native to the Himalayan mountains and parts of India and Africa, comes packed with over 90 protective compounds, including isothiocyanates, flavonoids and phenolic acids. Moringa has gained a reputation for fighting inflammation and combating various effects of malnutrition and aging, earning the nickname “the miracle plant.” Here are the top six proven moringa benefits to show that nickname is well-deserved:

Provides Antioxidants + Anti-Inflammatory Compounds. One of the reasons that the many health benefits of herbal plants like Moringa oleifera are so impressive is because they contain similar abilities to conventional drugs, only they don’t pose the same level of risk for experiencing side effects. According to a report published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention, moringa contains a mix of essential amino acids (the building blocks of proteins), carotenoid phytonutrients (the same kinds found in plants like carrots and tomatoes), antioxidants such as quercetin, and natural antibacterial compounds that work in the same way as many anti-inflammatory drugs.

Moringa leaves are high in several anti-aging compounds that lower the effects of oxidative stress and inflammation, including polyphenols, vitamin C, beta-carotene, quercetin, and chlorogenic acid. These are associated with a reduced risk for chronic diseases, such as stomach, lung or colon cancer; diabetes; hypertension; and age-related eye disorders.

Balances Hormones + Slows the Effects of Aging. A 2014 study published in the Journal of Food Science and Technology tested the effects of moringa (sometimes also called “drumstick”) along with amaranth leaves (Amaranthus tricolor) on levels of inflammation and oxidative stress in menopausal adult women. Knowing that levels of valuable antioxidant enzymes get affected during the postmenopausal period due to deficiency of “youthful” hormones, including estrogen, researchers wanted to investigate if these superfoods could help slow the effects of aging using natural herbal antioxidants that balance hormones naturally.

Ninety postmenopausal women between the ages of 45–60 years were selected and divided into three groups given various levels of the supplements. Levels of antioxidant status, including serum retinol, serum ascorbic acid, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and malondialdehyde were analyzed before and after supplementation, along with fasting blood glucose and haemoglobin levels. Results showed that supplementing with moringa and amaranth caused significant increases in antioxidant status along with significant decreases in markers of oxidative stress.

Better fasting blood glucose control and positive increases in hemoglobin were also found, which led the researchers to conclude that these plants have therapeutic potential for helping to prevent complications due to aging and natural hormonal changes. Moringa benefits the libido as well and might work like a natural birth control compound, according to some studies.

Although it’s been used as a natural aphrodisiac to increase sex drive and performance for thousands of years, it seems to help reduce rates of conception. That being said, it can boost the immune system during pregnancy and also increase breast milk production/lactation, according to some studies.

Helps Improve Digestive Health. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, moringa has been used in ancient systems of medicine such as Ayurveda to prevent or treat stomach ulcers, liver disease, kidney damage, fungal or yeast infections (such as candida), digestive complaints, and infections. A common use of moringa oil is helping to boost liver function and therefore detoxifying the body of harmful substances, such as heavy metal toxins. It might also be capable of helping to fight kidney stones, urinary tract infections, constipation, fluid retention/edema and diarrhea.

Balances Blood Sugar Levels. Moringa contains a type of acid called chlorogenic acid, which has been shown to help control blood sugar levels and allow cells to take up or release glucose (sugar) as needed. This gives moringa natural antidiabetic and hormone-balancing properties. Aside from chloregnic acid, compounds called isothiocyanates that are present in moringa have also been tied to natural protection against diabetes.

A study that appeared in the International Journal of Food Science Technology found that moringa had positive effects on blood glucose control and insulin levels in patients with diabetes when eaten as part of a high-carbohydrate meal. The effects of three different plants (moringa, curry and bittergourd) were tested in response to eating meals containing various levels of glucose. The results showed that plasma insulin responses were significantly lower when the three plants were included in the meal compared to when they weren’t, with all three plants having similar effects.

Separate studies conducted by the Biotechnology Institute at Sadat City University in Egypt have found that antidiabetic activities of low doses of moringa seed powder (50–100 milligrams per kilogram body weight) help increase antioxidant status and enzyme production within the liver, pancreas and kidneys of rats and prevent damage compared to control groups.

High levels of immunoglobulin (IgA, IgG), fasting blood sugar and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) — three markers seen in diabetics — were also found to decrease as a result of moringa given to rats with diabetes. Results from the study showed that overall, compared to rats not given the herbal treatment, those receiving moringa experienced a return to both kidney and pancreatic health as well as reduced complications of diabetes.

Protects + Nourishes the Skin. Moringa contains natural antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral compounds that protect the skin from various forms of infections. Some of the common ways moringa is used on the skin include: reducing athlete’s foot, eliminating odors, reducing inflammation associated with acne breakouts, treating pockets of infection or abscesses, getting rid of dandruff, fighting gum disease (gingivitis), and helping heal bites, burns, viral warts and wounds.

Moringa oil is applied directly to the skin as a drying, astringent agent used to kill bacteria, but at the same time when used regularly, it’s known to act as a lubricant and hydrate the skin by restoring its natural moisture barrier. It’s a common ingredient used in food manufacturing and perfumes because it prevents spoilage by killing bacteria, plus it has a pleasant smell and reduces odors.

Helps Stabilize Mood + Boost Brain Health. As a high protein food and a rich source of the amino acid tryptophan, moringa benefits neurotransmitter functions, including those that produce the “feel good” hormone serotonin. Moringa is also rich in antioxidants and compounds that improve thyroid health, which makes it beneficial for maintaining high energy levels plus fighting fatigue, depression, low libido, moods swings and insomnia.

Nutritional Benefits of Moringa

Moringa is a unique plant because almost all parts of it — leaves, seeds, flowers/pods, stem and roots — can be used as a source for nutrition and its other medicinal properties that fight free radical damage. The most popular medicinal use of moringa, both traditionally and today, involves drying and grinding down the tree’s antioxidant-packed leaves to unlock the most moringa benefits.

Moringa leaves are loaded with numerous nutrients, including antioxidants, protein, calcium, beta-carotene, vitamin C and potassium. Because it provides a concentrated source of vitamin A, moringa is given to thousands of children in third-world countries every year suffering from life-threatening vitamin A deficiency, which is linked to impaired immune function.

With an exceptionally high nutritional value, moringa can be used to obtain important trace minerals, protein and phenolics. The plant contains a rare and unique combination of disease-preventing phytonutrients, including: zeatin, quercetin, beta-sitosterol, caffeoylquinic acid and kaempferol — proven anti-inflammatories with strong medicinal values. Numerous studies have shown that these compounds are protective of the heart, natural circulatory stimulants, and possess antitumor, anti-epileptic, anti-ulcer, antispasmodic, antihypertensive and antidiabetic effects.

To take advantage of this, moringa leaves are used to brew tea by steeping the dried, preserved leaves in hot water, which releases their special chemical compounds — very similarly to how green tea is made. Dried moringa leaves are also ground to create a long-lasting powder, or potent extracts are taken from the leaves to be used in the formation of concentrated moringa capsule supplements.

Aside from the valuable leaves, the pods of the moringa tree also contain seeds that hold a healing type of oil. Oil from moringa seeds can be used to cook with or put directly onto the surface of the body. Several popular uses of moringa oil are to help retain skin’s moisture, speed up wound healing, and soothe dry or burnt skin.

Another interesting use of the seeds is for water purification. Combining moringa seeds with water helps impurities cling to the seeds so they can be removed, leaving behind better quality water that’s lower in toxins. Salt also seems to bind to moringa, which is beneficial for producing fresh-tasting water. Some studies have shown that 0.2 grams of ground moringa seed can turn one liter of contaminated water into safe drinking water due to the coagulating actions of certain ingredients in the seeds that absorb bacteria, adding water purification to the list of moringa benefits.

How to Use Moringa

As you can probably tell by now, moringa can be used in many different ways in order to utilize all the available moringa benefits. Because of the long transport time needed to ship moringa from parts of Africa or Asia where it’s grown, in the U.S. it’s usually sold in powder or capsule form, which prolongs its shelf life.

An interesting characteristic of moringa? It’s said to taste like a mix between horseradish and asparagus. (14) It might not have the most appealing flavor, but it’s a supplement with one of the the richest supplies of vital nutrients in the world, which makes the off-putting taste worth it.

There’s no recommended or required dosage of moringa at this time since it’s only an herbal supplement and not an essential nutrient. That being said, there’s some evidence that the optimum dose for humans has been calculated to be 29 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.

It’s recommended that you start by taking half a teaspoon of dried moringa orally per day for three to five days, increasing your intake slowly over two weeks as you get accumulated to its effects. Most people choose to take moringa every several days but not every single day for long duration of time, since it can can cause laxative effects and an upset stomach when overused.

How to get the best moringa benefits possible:

Dried moringa leaves or moringa powder: It takes roughly seven pounds of moringa leaves to make one pound of dried moringa powder. The leaves are considered the most potent parts of the plant, containing the most antioxidants and available macronutrients. In regard to the concentration of phenolic compounds, amino acids and volatile oils, the stem and root portions of the plant appear to have the least bioactive nutrients compared to the leaves. Look for moringa dried leaves in capsule, powder or tea form, and take them with a meal, rather than on an empty stomach. CHECK OUT

Moringa tea: This type of moringa is made from dried leaves steeped in hot water, just like many other beneficial herbal teas. The most nutrient-dense types are organic and dried slowly under low temperatures, which helps preserve delicate compounds. Avoid boiling the leaves to help retain the nutrients best, and don’t cook with moringa if possible. CHECK OUT

Moringa seeds: Moringa pods and flowers appear to have a high phenolic content along with proteins and fatty acids. These are the parts of the plant used to purify water and add protein to low-nutrient diets. Look for them added to creams, capsules and powders. The immature green pods of the plant are often called “drumsticks” and are prepared similarly to green beans. The seeds inside the pods are removed and roasted or dried just like nuts to preserve their freshness. CHECK OUT

Moringa oil: The oil from moringa seeds is sometimes called Ben oil. Look for it in natural creams or lotions. Keep the oil in a cool, dark place away from high temperatures or the sun. CHECK OUT

Potential Side Effects To Be Aware Of

Because it’s completely natural and free from chemical additives (when you buy a pure, high-quality brand), moringa taken by mouth or used on the skin seems to be very well-tolerated and unlikely to cause side effects. Leaves, fruit, oil and seeds from the moringa tree have been consumed safely for thousands of years, but today there are various forms of moringa supplements or extracts sold, so it’s important to buy the purest kind you can find.

It’s possible for moringa to be combined with synthetic ingredients, fillers and toxins in certain supplements, so read ingredient labels carefully. Follow dosage directions carefully, taking up to six grams daily for up to three weeks at a time (which has been shown to be safe according to studies).

During pregnancy or when breast-feeding, it’s best to avoid moringa extract, root or high doses of supplements since not enough research has been done to show it’s definitely safe. It’s possible that chemicals within the plant’s root, bark and flowers can lead to contractions of the uterus, which can cause complications during pregnancy. Use moringa under the care of a health care professional or functional doctor if pregnant or breast-feeding to air on the safe side.

Everything You Thought You Knew About Probiotics Is (Probably) Wrong

The Chalkboard Mag: Let's start from the top. What inspired the creation of Seed? What did you see lacking in the market?

Ara Katz: I was introduced to my co-founder and co-CEO, Raja, when I was pregnant. My pregnancy and breastfeeding experience, paired with our mutual fascination with the microbiome (especially its critical role in infant development) prompted the question, How can we set up a child for a healthy life? One question led to many around the possibilities of how beneficial microbes (bacteria) can (and do) impact our health as well as the health of our planet — and culminated in a shared vision to set a new standard in consumer health.

TCM: How do we benefit from taking probiotics?

AK: As transient (aka non-colonizing) microbes, our probiotic strains travel through your colon, interacting with your immune cells, gut cells, dietary nutrient, and existing bacteria to directly and indirectly deliver benefits along the way. Some strains support a stronger gut barrier, which is critical for the absorption of beneficial nutrients and for protection against harmful substances. Others trigger neurotransmitters that stimulate muscle contractions, resulting in better more regular bowel movements.

But probiotics are not all about digestive benefits. Our bodies are complex and interconnected, and the gastrointestinal system (home to the majority of your microbiome) sits at the core of it all. It’s connected to and influences everything from immunity and metabolic function to cardiovascular, urogenital, and even skin health. That last one should come as no surprise, considering your skin and your gut actually have similar jobs — managing what comes into your body from the outside world, and relaying information back to your body's nervous, immune, and endocrine systems.

That’s good news, because it means probiotics can have powerful effects across the entire body. The Dermatological Health blend in our Daily Synbiotic includes strains that are clinically proven to promote skin health, as well as a healthy SCORAD score (a scale for measuring atopic dermatitis, or eczema). Other strains produce metabolites — or byproducts — like short-chain fatty acids, which are essential for both metabolic and immune health.

Probiotics offer new tools for us to preventatively and proactively care for our whole selves—and are an important complement to diet, nutrition and exercise.

TCM: As consumers, how can we know who to trust in an industry that exceedingly touts gut health via probiotics?

AK: We saw the rise of ‘wellness’ usher in a wave of consumer enthusiasm and self-care. But we also saw it propel a category filled with misleading messaging, questionable products, hyperbolic claims and a shift away from science. Misinformation leads to misguided choices and misspent dollars that have the potential to compromise our health — rather than improve it.

We see this happening with probiotics too. We call it ‘gut mania,’ and it’s made worse by the fact that probiotics are an under-regulated category in the United States. The result is a saturated industry littered with products that don’t meet the globally-accepted, scientific definition of probiotics: ‘live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host’ (this definition was authored by a joint United Nations -World Health Organization Expert Panel chaired by our Chief Scientist, Dr. Gregor Reid, in 2001). The misuse of the term ‘probiotics’ across supplements, beverages, foods and even shampoos and mattresses, has created confusion and distrust in consumers (not to mention the media). It’s also betrayed the research that has been done — and continues to be done — at leading institutions around the world.

So together — with our combined experience in translating scientific research, product development, technology, e-commerce, and storytelling — we set out to bring much-needed science, precision, transparency, and education to this crowded and confusing market.

TCM: What are the biggest misconceptions consumers have about probiotics?

AK: Despite the ever-increasing number of ‘probiotic’ supplements, foods and beverages out there, there’s still a lot of confusion about what probiotics are, how they work, and why we should take them. These are the seven most common myths in the category...probiotics-seed

MYTH #1: PROBIOTICS ARE ONLY FOR DIGESTION.

74% of Americans live with gastrointestinal issues. 68 million suffer from chronic constipation. So it’s unsurprising that most people exclusively associate probiotics with digestive health. But this is a common misconception.

Your body is complex and interconnected, and the gastrointestinal system sits at the core of it all. It’s connected to and influences everything from immunity and metabolic function to cardiovascular, dermatological, and urogenital health. So, while improvements in gut health are often the most immediate, localized, and evident (with digestion often improved in as little as 24-48 hours), probiotics can actually have powerful effects across the entire body, far beyond your digestive tract.

MYTH #2: PROBIOTICS CAN BE FOUND IN FERMENTED FOODS AND BEVERAGES LIKE KOMBUCHA.

Scientifically speaking, many of the products out there that claim to be probiotic, like some kombuchas or probiotic nuts for example, don’t actually qualify as one. Just because something contains live microorganisms, doesn’t mean it satisfies the scientific definition of ‘probiotic’—”live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host”, a definition authored by the United Nations – World Health Organization Expert Panel chaired by our Chief Scientist, Dr. Gregor Reid, in 2001.

You might have ingested some bacteria, but do you know which strains? In what quantities? Have they survived the acidic journey through your digestive system and landed in your colon? Have those strains been studied, in those quantities, to actually do something in your body?

The science of probiotics demands precision, accountability, and efficacy (you are putting live bacteria in your body, after all).

MYTH #3: PROBIOTICS DON’T WORK UNLESS THEY COLONIZE YOUR GUT.

When it comes to taking probiotics, you may have heard that you need to ‘restore’ your gut or ‘put the good bacteria back’. This is based in a common misconception that probiotics must ‘colonize’ or alter the composition of your microbiome to “work.” It’s not true.

In fact, outside of specific cases like fecal transplants, there is little evidence that probiotics ‘colonize’, or that they need to. Compared to the tens of trillions of microbes already rooted in your gastrointestinal tract, most probiotics don’t contain enough new bacteria to make a significant difference in the composition of your microbiota.

Even if they did, we don’t know enough about the safety of introducing colonizing microbes (especially soil-based microorganisms, which are becoming popular). Large numbers of newcomers moving in and displacing your existing bacteria could alter the unique balance of your ecosystem within and trigger unintended consequences.

What scientists do know is that, as transient microbes, probiotics travel through your GI tract, interacting with your immune cells, dendritic cells, gut cells, dietary nutrients, and existing bacteria to, directly and indirectly, deliver benefits.⠀

Some enhance the gene expressions involved in tight junction signaling, which help protect against intestinal permeability—this means a tight gut barrier. Others trigger neurotransmitters that stimulate muscle contractions for increased motility—think, better, more regular poops. Yet other bacteria produce byproducts like short-chain fatty acids, which have been extensively shown to be beneficial for metabolic and immune health.

This is why, if you choose to take a probiotic, continuous daily intake is important.

MYTH #4: PROBIOTICS WITH HIGHER CFUS ARE ALWAYS BETTER.

Not necessarily — especially if it contains billions and billions of bacteria never tested in humans.

You’ve probably seen the term CFU on a probiotic label. That refers to colony-forming units, which basically tells you how many bacteria in the sample are capable of dividing and forming colonies. First, a bigger number on the bottle does not always mean better results. The best dose, per strain, is one that has been shown to deliver clinically-validated, positive outcomes in humans.

Seed leverages a new form of measurement that has emerged — AFU — which stands for Active Fluorescent Units. It’s measured with flow cytometry, a process where probiotic cells are tagged with fluorescent ‘markers’ and counted by a laser as they pass through a tube. Through AFU, we are able to calculate a more precise measurement of all viable cells, including ones that are efficacious but not necessarily culturable (and therefore would not be counted in a traditional plated CFU measurement).

TCM: What do Daily Synbiotic probiotics do that others can't?

AK: Our Daily Synbiotic is the first to take a ‘microbe-systems approach’ with clinically-studied, strain-specific benefits beyond digestive health, including cardiovascular health, dermatological health, immune function, reproductive health, gut barrier integrity, and oxidative stress. The female formulation is also the first probiotic to increase folate production.

TCM: What's the purpose of including prebiotics?

AK: New observations have revealed that gut bacteria can actually biotransform prebiotics into secondary metabolites, increasing their bioavailability in the body and contributing to your health. So, it's not just about what bacteria 'eat,' but also what bacteria can 'do.'

In the simplest terms, prebiotics are the ‘food’ that feeds and encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria. But we now know that’s only a small piece of a larger puzzle.

TCM: What's the key difference between the Female Daily Synbiotic and the Male Daily Synbiotic?

AK: The female formulation includes a dermatological health blend and is also the first to include probiotic strains that increase folate production within the body. The male formulation contains two unique strains which emerged from a clinical study only conducted in men evaluating muscle recovery after high-intensity exercise. Both formulations are the same and differ only in these mentioned benefits and are safe to take for either sex.

TCM: Why is continuous daily intake important and how do we know the probiotics we're taking are working?

AK: Each time you go to the bathroom, you lose up to a few trillion microbes (including probiotics that have completed their work in your colon). This is why continuous, daily intake is important to optimize impact.

Everyone’s body is different, and the benefits you ‘feel’ (reduced bloating, more regular bowel movements, higher energy) are often just the most visceral ones.

Many people feel results of the Daily Synbiotic as soon as 24-48 hours after ingestion, due to localized benefits like improved digestion. Longer term benefits like cardiovascular health and metabolic function may take longer to notice. You may never notice them at all, and that’s completely normal. As long as you continue your daily intake, those beneficial microbes are doing their work inside to program, sustain, and enhance your health.

It must also be noted that Jing is the driving power of your sex life. schizandra has a reputation as an aphrodisiac for both men and women.

Jing can be replenished by consuming certain foods and tonic herbs, and schizandra is one of the greatest of the Jing tonic herbs. Jing tonic herbs are believed to be beneficial to our brain power, to our bones and marrow (which produces our blood, including our immune cells), and our sexual and reproductive functions. Jing tonic herbs like schizandra support our adrenal glands, and this adrenal support is important for those of us, who live busy and stressful lives.

For hundreds of years, it was the official daily herb of the Chinese imperial household.

Balances Hormones + Boosts Libido | This tasty herb is famous for women who are sexually active, on a number of levels. For the scholars, sages, and kings of Asia through the centuries, this has been one of the main reasons for taking schizandra on a daily basis throughout life. It is believed to be protective, and modern studies support this notion. If you are a believer that your brain is your greatest asset, then you should consume schizandra every day to enhance your brain and to support its function throughout your long life.

Helps The Body cleanse | It supports cleansing the body via the liver. We are all exposed to xenotoxins (environmental pollutants) on a daily basis. When you are using schizandra, you want to be sure you are using the real herb, which is the Northern schizandra. Some products sold in America are made with a faux kind of schizandra known as “southern schizandra,” which is the wrong species of schizandra because of its very weak action. The Latin name of this faux schizandra is Schisandra sphenanthera.

Unfortunately, many manufacturers in America don’t know the difference, so they buy and sell this variety instead of the real schizandra. It looks similar so it is easy to substitute on the market, especially to American companies that are not experienced in Di Tao herb selection. “Northern Schizandra” comes from Manchuria and is the only real Di Tao (authentic) schizandra. Unfortunately, many American companies don’t know the difference. Real schizandra only comes from Changbai Mountain or from even further north up to Siberia.

You can obtain high quality schizandra in a variety of delivery formats, including tinctures, powders in capsules, and instant granules. All can be excellent. I use all three forms regularly, depending upon what is on my desk or shelf today. Instant granules called schizandra eeTee contain the full spectrum of raw schisandra constituents. The water-and-ethanol tincture will contain all of the thousand or so constituents in schizandra, and this is a favorite way to take schizandra by experts. Capsules that contain the concentrated water-extract of schizandra is also very popular because it is so easy to take a couple capsules a day on a consistent basis.

Schizandra is considered to be a very safe herb. It may be used on a continuous basis, or it may be used intermittently as a boost. Buy a bottle here.

It may seem like the simplest task of the week, but without learning to nail a good grocery list you may never learn to really kill it in the kitchen.

We’re all guilty of stumbling out of the grocery store with much more than what was on our grocery list. Even with all of our nutritional knowledge — and endless inspiration from our In My Fridge series — it can be tough to avoid eye contact with those fake health snacks and innocent-seeming processed foods. Here's how to keep things strategic (and sustainable!) while grocery shopping, according to you...

Make sure you eat before you shop and carry a snack just in case.

Only shopping the perimeter of the store! The middle aisles are full of preservatives.

Bring your own reusable bags. Only buy what you can carry.

If you have a farmers market, check it out before going to the grocery store for all your fresh produce.

Sourcing items from bulk bins whenever possible - they're usually way cheaper!

Skip the plastic bags in the produce section. Fruits and veggies have skins for a reason - they'll be fine in your basket without creating that extra waste.

Online ordering for delivery! Not only do I save time, but there is no risk of being tempted to buy anything extra or unhealthy as I only “see” the items I type in. #gamechanger

STICK TO THE LIST!!!

This is more of an “after grocery shopping hack” but I like to cut up fruits and veggies right when I get home so they’re quick and easy to grab and go. Nothing goes to waste.

Always buy unsweetened and use your own sweetener of choice at home to avoid excess sugar intake.

Buy frozen fruits and veggies for smoothies. You can get out of season produce that is still full of nutrients because they’re flash-frozen during peak season and organic is much more affordable than fresh fruits and veggies.

Only use a basket to shop with. If I can’t carry it, then it goes back on the shelf, which usually makes me rethink that sweet treat that found its way in.

Try to buy things that aren’t in packages! Totally gets you away from processed stuff and into real foods.

How To Tap Into Your Natural Appetite Control System + Why It’s Better Than Any Diet

Not sure what to eat or how big your portion needs to be? Get off Google and drop into your body - it already knows what it wants. Many of us struggle to stay in sync with our native hunger signals. Integrative nutritionist, Jennie Miremadi, has overcome the challenge first-hand and is sharing some savvy tips for how to reconnect with our natural appetite control system and how to use it for a more fulfilling relationship with food. The less we restrict the more space we have to live in line with the natural rhythm of our mind-body connection and use food as fuel to support our best selves...

Years before I became a nutritionist, I thought I had an “appetite problem” and was desperate to find a way to get it under control. My approach was to use diet pills to suppress my appetite or restrict eating by counting calories or measuring my food. But this made me so disconnected from my natural hunger signals that when I wasn’t tracking or artificially restricting my intake I would end up overeating at meals or would binge on really unhealthy food.

At the time, I remember hearing that if you listened to your body it would tell you how much to eat. I found this idea frustrating because I was actually completely disconnected from my body’s natural hunger signals and had no idea how to listen to them. I would look in awe at people who could eat half of their meal and stop—I was convinced there was something wrong with me.

But there wasn’t anything wrong with me. We all have a built-in appetite control system via our body’s physical hunger cues. I had just stopped listening to mine along the way.

It took discipline to stop my unhealthy eating habits. And I had to pinpoint my physical hunger sensations and then use them as the gauge for when to eat. But, with practice, it became easy to listen to my body, eventually becoming second nature.

How To Tap Into Your Natural Appetite Control System

If you’d like to reconnect to your natural appetite but don’t know where to start, here’s my step-by-step guide:

Before you eat, scan your body. Notice whether you have any physical hunger sensations, such as a growling stomach or an empty feeling in your belly. If you do, that’s your cue to start eating. If you can’t sense any physical signs of hunger, wait to start eating until you do.

Next, put food on a plate and sit down while you eat.

Then, put away anything that might distract you from your food such as your phone, computer or television. The goal here is to be totally present with your food. You might find eating without distractions challenging at first. But, once you try eating this way, you'll love it—being fully present with your food enables you to enjoy it so much more.

Now, take a bite of food. Eat slowly, and taste each and every bite.

Notice all of the textures, flavors and taste sensations flowing from the food as they land on your tongue and in your mouth.

After each bite, check in with your hunger levels and observe how they change with each bite.

When you no longer notice any physical hunger sensations, that’s your cue to stop eating.

Have food left on your plate? That’s okay. You can save it for later and eat more again when physical hunger signals come back.

Connecting with and responding to natural hunger signals is the key to accessing your natural appetite. Practice until you’ve mastered it!

Influences That May Deter Your Natural Appetite

Be aware that even if you get to the point where your physical hunger signals are guiding your eating, there are still food and non-food influences that can screw up your natural appetite. Here are some of the culprits:

Skipping Meals + Nutrient Poor Food | The best way to send your appetite into a tailspin is to eat a diet that is totally devoid of nutrients and comprised primarily of processed, refined carbs and sugar. These foods spike your blood sugar and cause cravings, making it very difficult for you to listen to natural hunger signals. Similarly, if you skip breakfast and lunch, by the time you start eating in the afternoon your body is so starved for nutrients that you’re likely to devour anything you can get your hands on, which will make it difficult to listen to your body’s hunger cues.

Instead, have breakfast, lunch and dinner. And eat nutrient-rich meals made from real, whole foods. Make sure to add protein, healthy fat and fiber-rich carbs to each meal to help balance your blood sugar and make you feel satiated. One of my clients recently tried this and reported: “When I eliminated sugar completely, I discovered that my body actually began to crave nutrients. Instead of craving donuts, I wanted nuts and spinach! It was a revelation.” Like my client, if you fill your body with nutrient-packed foods, you’ll be setting yourself up to listen to it.

Alcohol | Alcohol is not only filled with empty calories, it distorts what you think your body actually needs. So when you drink, do it in moderation. That means sticking to one or two drinks in the course of an evening, no more than a couple of times per week. And if you notice that you feel disconnected from your natural hunger signals every time you drink, cut back or cut it out altogether.

Stress | Your body produces a hormone called cortisol to respond to stress. When cortisol is released in your body, it also raises blood sugar levels and increases appetite. If you don’t find ways to deal with stress in a healthy way, you can end up with an out of control appetite and spiked blood sugar.

Stress isn’t going to disappear from your life, but you can use tools to manage it constructively. In particular, studies show that both meditation and EFT lower cortisol levels in the blood and reduce stress. So, if you create a daily practice that includes both of these exercises, you’ll be simultaneously supporting your natural appetite and your mental and emotional wellbeing.

Sleep | Many clients tell me that when they don’t get enough sleep on a particular night, the next day their appetite is voracious. That’s because even a single night of sleep deprivation increases ghrelin (the hormone that tells your body to eat). If you’re constantly sleep deprived, you’re going to be dealing with an out of whack appetite.

Implement these healthy sleep habits to help prevent sleep deprivation-induced appetite issues. Here are a few helpful tips to get you started:

+ If you drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages, try to limit intake to the morning.

+ Wind yourself down at least an hour before you go to bed. Turn off your computer, shut off the TV and stop looking at your phone. To get yourself into a relaxed state, put on calming music, turn on a recorded yoga nidra session or listen to a guided sleep meditation.

+ Even if you don’t have a problem falling or staying asleep, if you’re not setting aside enough time to sleep, you’ll always be tired. Before you set your alarm, factor in enough time to make sure you wake up feeling well-rested.

+ Your tablet, computer and smartphone (and all LEDs) emit high levels of a blue light that disrupt circadian rhythm and suppress production of melatonin, an important sleep hormone. If you’re going to work on devices at night, one surprising solution is to wear blue-light blocking amber glasses to help reduce the disruption.

If you create a healthy sleep routine and are still struggling with sleep, talk to your health practitioner about whether a hormone imbalance may be triggering your sleep issues. Some common insomnia-inducing hormone imbalances that I help clients with in my practice include low progesterone levels, high nighttime cortisol and low melatonin levels.
