It all started one summer afternoon when she turned a piece of wood into a ring using her dad's drill press (her father is also an artist, and his influence on her signature style is undeniable). She was working in fashion at the time, but found that the art of creating jewelry satisfied her soul on another level -- and hardly felt like work.

Sophie's designs effortlessly embody an easy-cool California vibe, making her a perfect fit for the Venice neighborhood she's based in.

A Nutritionist’s Guide To Elimination Diets (And How To Not Go Cray)

Gluten-free, sugar-free, lectin-free... these diet labels may have earned major trend status, but for many, they're a mandatory method for staying well. Done the right way, elimination diets can have far-reaching health benefits. But embraced without guidance or clear goals, they can leave us feeling totally deprived and overwhelmed. Integrative nutritionist Jennie Miremadi is sharing her pro tips for taking on an elimination diet in balance - and with sanity intact... 

As an integrative and functional nutritionist, I’m often guiding clients through major diet changes that involve cutting out foods they eat regularly and love. While the benefits of removing certain foods from their diets can have a profound impact on health, making these changes isn’t always easy or sustainable without the right mindset and tools in place. I know this all too well.

For many years, before I was a nutritionist, I not only restricted my food intake with diet pills, I jumped from one fad diet to another. I never thought about eating food for nutrients, using food to nourish myself physically or using food to improve my health. I thought only about the effect food might have on my weight.

When I got to a point in my life where I was determined to change my relationship with food, I realized that if I was going to make sustainable healthy changes to the way that I was eating, I had to alter the way I thought about food and its role in my body.

This became apparent as I began to take certain foods out of my diet for my health. At first, when I focused on what I couldn’t eat, I felt like I was on a deprivation diet all over again, which made it impossible to stick with long term. I realized that removing foods from my diet was much easier to maintain if I focused instead on how the food I ate would impact my health and how it would make me feel when I ate it - I let that become my gauge for my food choices. The more I noticed how good I felt when I nourished myself with healthy food, the more I preferred to eat that way. And, as I started experimenting with how to make delicious food in line with my new eating approach, the more it became a natural part of my life.

Now, I eat an anti-inflammatory diet about 95% of the time and it’s pretty much effortless for me. But it didn’t happen overnight. It was a gradual process that included major changes to my thinking, changes to how I was nourishing myself with food, and a lot of practice in being kind to myself along the way.

If you’re looking to upgrade your health by removing certain foods from your diet, approaching it in the right way is crucial. Here are some tips to help:

Choose to feel empowered, not deprived: When you let go of eating certain foods, feelings of deprivation might creep in. One of the best ways to combat this is by approaching your diet change from a place of empowerment instead of deprivation. Focus on what you are gaining by making these changes, rather than what you are giving up. Recognize that you have a choice, and you are choosing to nourish your body in a way that will elevate your health. Acknowledge yourself for making that decision and allow yourself to feel empowered that you have the tools, knowledge and ability to affect healthy change in your body and your life.

Eat food that you love: Just because you’re changing the way you eat, doesn’t mean your new diet shouldn’t be filled with food you love. Search your favorite wellness blogs for new recipes that look amazing or buy a cookbook with recipes tailored to your new approach. The more you make this experience a delicious one, the more likely it is that you’ll want to stick with it.

Find delicious substitutes: Finding flavorful replacements for the food that you’re no longer eating can be key in helping you enjoy and embrace your new diet. Make a list of all of the foods that you’re excluding, and then figure out healthy substitutes for each those foods. Whether it’s coconut aminos in place of soy sauce, a tahini-based dressing instead of a dairy-based one or a collard green leaf ‘wrap’ in place of bread, experiment with new ways to prepare your food that will help you love it.

Remember why you started: Are you hoping to increase your energy by eating a cleaner, healthier diet? Are you trying to find a way of eating that makes your body thrive? Are you dealing with a health issue you want to support with nutrition? No matter your reason for making these diet changes, it might feel really tough to eat this way at first. If this happens, reconnect to the reason why you started, reminding yourself of all the benefits you hope to achieve with your new way of eating. This can help motivate you to keep going when you feel like giving up.

Connect to how you feel in your body: Removing inflammatory, unhealthy foods from your diet is likely to make you feel amazing inside and out. If you’re tempted to go back to your old eating habits, remind yourself how you felt before you made these changes and think about how great you feel in your body now.

Be kind to yourself above all else: If you fall off track, don’t let yourself fall into a place of shame and self-loathing. You deserve not only to feel good in your body, but also to show yourself compassion and kindness as you navigate the process of reaching your wellness goals.

Sophia Bush’s Secret To Success Might Surprise You

As a poster child for confidence and care-free living, we loved hearing former Guest Editor and overall balanced babe, Sophia Bush, chime in the topics of confidence, success, risk and failure on social media recently.

Dealing with the risk of failure is something all of us deal with, and those in the spotlight of celebrity are certainly not immune.

The actress recently discussed the topic on Instagram, after an attendee at a panel she spoke on asked Sophia when she'd reached the point where her confidence outweighed her fears. We loved Sophia's response:

"That whole "get past x and you'll be onto y" thing?
It doesn't exist. No matter what you achieve,you'll set a new goal that will be out in the distance.
You will never "arrive." No matter how much success you have -- or in many cases the world perceives
you to have had -- it comes with a shit ton of failure too. But you definitely miss 100% of the shots you don't take."

So how does one deal with fear and still navigate life and career successfully? Sophia suggests keeping all the big feels close and using them as fuel...

"The fear won't magically subside.
You've got to pick it up and carry it in your pack with you. Roll it up next to your ambition and your tenacity. Tuck it in with the confident thread that runs up your spine. Right next to your big idea. Your big love.
It's part of you. The sooner you make yourself acquainted with it and quit trying to pretend like it's not there, the sooner it becomes just another piece of you instead of a larger than life monster in your closet."

No Carrot Sticks Allowed: How To Make Modern Veggie CruditΓ©s

Well-seasoned food stylist and writer, Suzanne Lenzer, embraces the beauty of easy-yet-elevated finger food in her stunning new cookbook, Graze: Inspiration for Small Plates and Meandering Meals.

We agree with Suzanne when she says that it's not cruditΓ©s themselves that make for boring party food, but it's how most people make them that is bland. Take a fresh look at the kind of modern, inventive cruditΓ©s we're seeing at the coolest hosts' homes and our favorite restaurants. Take the author's advice and make a cruditΓ© platter that can go head to head with even the most impressive cheese plate...

CruditΓ©s have never been my thing. It’s not because I don’t adore raw vegetables - it’s just the ubiquitous carrot sticks, broccoli florets and red pepper slices fall a bit flat next to a platter of unctuous cheeses or a dish of nectarous olives. I know people say they like cruditΓ©s, but could it really be the creamy dip they adore, the hummus or guacamole, that keeps them reaching for another celery stick? I always figured that was the real attraction, until it dawned on me that the raw vegetables I like the most aren’t commonly served as cruditΓ©s. This hit me one night while I was cooking dinner, when Ken turned to me and said, “You’re eating all the sprouts.” He was right. We eat roasted Brussels sprouts like they’re going out of style in the winter, but while they’re sitting on the baking sheet, glistening with oil and sparkling with flaky salt awaiting their turn in the oven, I snack on them mercilessly. The oil and salt tenderize the papery outer leaves and soften their cruciferous bite, making them irresistible - the perfect raw vegetable for pre-meal munching.

And there it was: With that subtle scolding, I had an epiphany. It wasn’t cruditΓ©s I found lacking, but the array of cruditΓ©s set before me. I love fennel slices so thin they flutter on your tongue, crisp sugar snap peas, and peppery radishes. Those young rainbow-colored carrots can work, or more mature ones turned into curls with the whip of a peeler. Even just tweaking the way vegetables are sliced makes a difference in how they appear on the plate, appeal to the senses and sit on the tongue, which is why for me, a few sprouts gleaming with oil or a cucumber curl win out over another grape tomato or celery stick any day.

Salt all the rims. You might be over millenial pink, but have you sipped on it yet? In the nick of time for National Tequila Day (it's today), we stumbled upon CΓ³digo 1530's Rosa tequila - yes, basically rosΓ© tequila - and knew we were on to something major.  

We came across this gorgeously glowy spirit somewhere in the deep dredges of Instagram and felt as though we'd seen the future - we can see this pink spirit making an appearance at every cocktail party we attend through 2018.

Surprisingly, many wellness pros advocate for vodka and tequila as healthier alcoholic beverage choices than wine - so rosΓ© lovers, listen up...

CΓ³digo 1530's Rosa tequila is aged for seven years before going through the month long treatment that gives the spirit it's subtle flavor and unique hue. Near the end of the aging process, Rosa tequila is rested for one month in uncharred Napa Cabernet French White Oak barrels.

To celebrate the new pink tequila, we took a bottle of CΓ³digo 1530 Rosa, along with a few bottles of Pressed Juicery watermelon jalapeno juice out to Malibu Farm and let their bartenders have some fun.

The cocktail recipe below is the delicious result and it is hands down the best margarita we've had all summer! Try it yourself for a fun and healthy twist on National Tequila Day...

Inside The Morning Routines of 7 Top Yogis

You are your morning. The way we choose to start our day sets the tone for the rest of it -- and we're endlessly fascinated by how pros in our wellness community embrace the art of a morning routine.

Lately, we're loving the new app, Yoga Wake Up, which provides guided meditations and yoga sequences from yogis around the world that we can do from the delicious comfort of our pillows and sheets.

We asked seven yogis from Yoga Wake Up's programming to walk us through their own morning routines and love what they've shared...

Missy Kai Yoga

Missy Kai: My morning self-care rituals, also called dinacharya in Sanskrit, are heavily influenced by principles of yoga and ayurveda (its sister science). Dinacharya is both a necessary and sacred component of a personal, holistic yoga therapy practice. When done properly, a morning routine can effectively reduce any pain or stiffness in the body, cleanse the digestion of toxins or ‘ama,’ and prepare the mind for focus and concentration or ‘dharana.’

My own personal routine consists of (at a minimum) eliminating, tongue-scraping, drinking either warm lemon water or a digestive tea and then beginning my yoga practice, which usually consists of no more than about 30 minutes of asana, breath work and pranayama. In creating your own dinacharya, consistency and simplicity are more important than the level of technique you're practicing.

Tamal Dodge Yoga

Tamal Dodge: Morning routines are essential for me to set the day straight from the beginning.
I like to wake up and drink one large glass of water then another glass with a half a lemon squeezed into it to help alkalize my body. I will then do a some breath work and sun salutations for 10-15 minutes just to loosen my stiff body and open my mind before tackling the day. These simple steps help me stay calm and present though my daily tasks.

Jen Smith: What I do when I wake up in the morning is very important to me and sets the foundation for my entire day. I always wake up 20 minutes early (time varies depending on schedule): five minutes for tea, five minutes meditation, five minutes writing a quick journal entry of the first thing on my mind and five minute left for my neti pot. The rest of my morning is business as usual (shower, dress, gather day supplies, and out the door), which always runs smoothly due to those first 20 minutes.

Miki Ash Yoga

Miki Ash: Morning is my favorite time of the day. It’s when I set the tone for how the rest of the day will unfold, and I get myself in the best headspace possible. The first thing I do is go to my meditation space, write in my Five Minute Journal about what I’m grateful for, and meditate. Then I usually eat a Perfect Bar while I walk my dog Bodhi around the block. It’s such a nice time to just be outside. I always leave my phone at home when I walk him. If I’m not rushing out of the house to teach or do a photoshoot, I like to make a superfood matcha latte or some avocado toast! It's the small things that make me the happiest!

Sarah Ezrin Yoga

Sarah Ezrin: I like to wake up at dawn, when the sun is barely up and the rest of the world is still sleeping. I'm most creative at this special time of day, so I often write and create while drinking my tea. After that it's time to move my body and I unroll my mat and do a long, soulful practice.

Laurel Erilane: My body clock is pretty spot on so I almost always wake up before my alarm, however I often find it hard to get out of bed without a little movement. Since my mind is more awake than my body, my sadhana is simple: I visualize my day in stillness, setting positive intentions and hold universal twist to the left and right for a few minutes.

Angela Jean Yoga

Angela Jean Weber: My early mornings are almost always spent teaching my yoga clients, so I make it a part of my practice to get up at least 30 minutes before I absolutely have to so I have some time to myself before the forces of life, work and mommyhood start tugging at me.

From the moment I wake up, I begin my day with a simple gratitude practice right from the comfort of my own bed. I find that starting my day by naming something I'm grateful for not only sets the overall tone for the day but also helps dissolve any negativity or resistance I might be feeling towards having to get up that early. Next, I take a moment to connect to my breath, which helps me to feel present and gets oxygen flowing to my brain, helping me to better wake up. I then integrate some simple stretches with my breathing to get me feeling grounded in my body and warmed up for the day ahead. After that I head downstairs and put the coffee on (yes coffee! I'm not a monk... just a normal human being who likes coffee in the mornings). I then spend the next 20 minutes or so in my backyard while the sun is waking up, just being quiet, reflecting and taking in the beautiful trees and sounds of nature. Most often I don't use any particular meditation technique other than simple breath awareness and taking in the beautiful surroundings of my backyard. Sometimes this is the only time I get to myself, so my morning ritual is an essential ingredient to the overall wellbeing of myself and my family and students. When my cup is full, I can fully show up for the people and things I care most about in life.

The Smart Girl’s Guide To Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting is a powerful health practice that is part of many spiritual and medical traditions around the world. The practice can work wonders for ongoing energy, digestion and immunity, but science points to powerful long term benefits as well.

Dr. Lisa Davis of Pressed Juicery's medical advisory board is talking with us about the science behind intermittent fasting and why it can be such a powerful health habit. We highly recommend learning all you about the power of cleanses and fasts, but also remind readers to be mindful and gentle with yourself as you find what works for your own health... 

Can Fasting Slow Down Aging?

Science is tackling whether or not fewer calories can mean longer life for humans.

As the United States continues into the 21st century, the obesity epidemic shows few signs of easing. Cheap sugary and fatty foods are everywhere one looks and a majority of people the U.S. are overfed and suffering as a result.

Calorie restriction (CR) is one way to address obesity (and simply being overweight), and science is finding out that cutting calories may lengthen the lifespan while shrinking the waistline.

The healthy effects of CR aren’t limited to the lowered risks of obesity-related disease when people lose weight. There’s more to it than that. Cutting calories may benefit our bodies on a cellular level that nutritional science is just starting to understand.

Epigenetics and CR

How long we live — and how well — has a lot to do with epigenetics, the particular ways in which our genes express themselves, even as our DNA stays the same. As we age, these genetic instructions can change, or ‘drift,’ turning up some genes’ traits while dialing back others.

Calorie restriction affects epigenics. In the past decade, a number of studies have shown that restricting calories in simple life forms such as fish, flies, worms and yeast altered the expression of their genes in a range of ways. The organisms showed improved insulin sensitivity and reduced oxidative stress (the wear and tear on cells that contributes to the aging process).

Further rodent studies demonstrated that calorie restriction could slow down aging-related changes in gene expression governing skeletal muscle, brain and heart tissues. Could human beings also see similar results?

The "CALeRIE" Study

Studying the phenomenon in humans took some careful thought, since starvation was not feasible. A two-year study called the Comprehensive Assessment of Long-term Effects of Reducing the Intake of Energy, (CALERIE) was sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and the results were published in 2015.

The study showed that calorie restriction (a cut of 25% of the subjects’ energy needs) in normal-weight and overweight adults over a six-month period did not affect their metabolism, but did slow down the rate of high blood pressure, cholesterol levels and insulin resistance.

Remarkably, the study also found that the long-term CR plan reduced the subjects’ levels of C-reactive protein by 47 percent. C-reactive protein is a biomarker of inflammation, which is associated with cardiovascular disease and other ailments more common in older people.

CR: Cutting the Calories, Keeping the Nutrients

Calorie restriction is more than just fasting and is based on limiting calories while providing adequate vitamins and minerals essential to health.

Professor Monika Puzianowska-Kuznicka, an authority on clinical epigenetics at the Mossakowski Medical Research Center in Warsaw, Poland, notes that certain bioactive nutrients can affect health and aging in much the same way that CR can.

Naturally occurring compounds such as polyphenols found in fruits, leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables have been shown to lower the risk of aging-related illness, including cardiovascular disease and some cancers.

With this in mind, dietary scientists are currently designing studies exploring the potential of fresh fruit and vegetable juices in intermittent fasts, since they support both objectives: helping reduce calories, while ensuring a rich supply of these healthy compounds.

Many green juices are low in calories, high in nutrients — for example, Pressed Juicery's Greens 1 juice is only 30 calories per serving.

CR in Action: Intermittent Fast Days

CR is used in plans with intermittent fast days — 24-hour periods when intake of calories is between 60% and 85% of the person’s daily energy needs.

A typical CR plan alternates fast days with days of normal calorie intake. For instance, fasting for two or three non-consecutive days a week and taking in the full recommended number of calories on the other days.

Although CR is linked with improving health and possibly even extending life, caution is a must. For any calorie-restricting diet, it is essential to get clearance from your doctor, registered dietitian, nurse or primary care provider before you begin.
