We're not expecting this stylish slice of translucent pumpkin pie to show up on holiday tables around the country anytime soon. It doesn't feel grandmother friendly, does it? However, serve this up to us at the legendary Alinea in Chicago and we're all in.

Leave it to Kat Odell to find us something so fun and unusual for the holidays . Though her description is brief (those Alinea masterminds aren't about to release this gem of a recipe!), all that's needed is a glimpse of the image above to understand what all the fuss is about. Save The Small Talk: 4 Strategies for Holiday Party Social Anxiety

Introvert or extrovert, no personality is exempt from feeling a smidgen of social overwhelm around the holidays. Between family gatherings, office parties and a few too many of those "just gonna make an appearance" nights, even the most social butterflies among us can fumble the customary chit-chat of holiday festivities.

This piece from Darling Magazine's Arianna Schioldager is the ultimate guide to not only surviving small talk, but actually making it meaningful. Study up before you have to see your socially awkward cousins or attend that cocktail party stag...

With most things in life you have to start small. Like small talk. It is the daily seed we plant that has the potential to bloom. But no seed becomes a flower overnight.

Good things come in small packages, and small talk is one small step in the right direction — the path of real, deep connection that can bring us hope, confidence and happiness.

We happen across these interactions daily — at the bank, the movies, when we get into an Uber ride. We ask first-tier, easy come, easy go questions and as such have conversations in passing. The kind we don’t expect to have consequence. The ones we can move through without giving anything of ourselves. These conversations have some value, seeing that it is always better to be polite. You never know when a simple smile or brief conversation might drastically change the course of a stranger’s day.

Then there are second-tier talks. The chitchat we have on first dates or coffee with new friends: What’s your relationship like with your family? How long was your last relationship? Ever been to a Taylor Swift concert? These are handshake-before-the-hug conversations, a testing of the waters. If it’s warm we might be compelled to jump in — if it’s cold, we back out slowly.

Finally, there is third-tier talk. Big talk. Real talk. The unexpected conversations that stick with us, alter the course of our afternoons, and allow us to develop our insides. We can’t expect to get to these big conversations without wading through the small waters first. Yet most of us try to avoid the introductory interactions. Just “chatting” makes us uncomfortable. We often mumble and stutter our way through these awkward early dialogues and nod along, when what we really want to do is run away. But why should such a necessary part of life be something that gives the majority of people a general sense of unease? Why the butterflies that arise during the compulsory work cocktail hour where you don’t know anyone, or the trepidation when you sit down next to a stranger at a dinner party?

But why should such a necessary part of life be something that gives the majority of people a general sense of unease?

Some of us, aware of our great fear, might even go so far as to practice in the bathroom mirror what we might say to someone over a simple coffee (been there), and as such try to come up with solutions to “surviving” small talk.

However, “surviving” small talk implies that it doesn’t matter — that we should walk away from conversations unharmed, unaffected, but let’s stop thinking of small talk as a means to an end. Let’s make it a beginning. How do we do that? We practice the art of small talk until we become our very own Picasso.

After the basics, get creative.
Ask a question that you would want someone to ask you. For instance, what part of your childhood did you like the best? Or if they would rather be a fly on a wall or a wall that could talk. Start with where you are comfortable — a question that you wouldn’t mind answering — and let a mutual discussion grow from there.

Don’t be afraid to be honest.

It is incredibly easy to feel disconnected and misunderstood — especially given the pace of social media. Honesty requires that we slow down. We must allow our thoughts the space they need to be voiced. If someone asks you about your day, they’ve given you that gift in asking. If you have the ability to be honest, the conversation that could follow might just change your whole day, week or month. Whether it is because you form an exciting new bond or because this person has a unique take on something you’re dealing with, honesty allows space for fresh perspectives. Don’t run from this.

Honesty requires that we slow down. We must allow our thoughts the space they need to be voiced.

Be a good listener.

To be a good talker, you have to be able to be quiet and tune into what someone else is saying. We can allow ourselves to get so worried about awkward silences that we spend half of the conversation thinking about what we are going to say next.

The art of small talk lies in our ability to be present. What you are listening for is common ground, a way to build an unexpected bridge. You will find that if you’re actively listening, it makes it easier for the conversation to ebb and flow naturally. Don’t plan; participate.

Focus on non-verbal communication.

This can sometimes be more important than your words. You want your body language to be open, leaning in, your eye contact strong. The more welcoming your body is to another person, the more you can get out of a chat. Everyone likes to feel safe. We talk with our bodies without knowing so. Make sure yours is open.

Take your time.

Don’t rattle off questions you think someone wants to be asked, or get caught in the anxiety in your head. The art of small talk lies in our ability to be present, and each conversation should be unique to that person. It is important to stop, think and ask pertinent questions. Where did you grow up is a fine place to start, but base the next question on the individual answer. For example, I love San Francisco. What made you decide to leave there?

In short, to excel at small talk you have to think about what is directly in front of you: a real person looking to connect. Don’t move mindlessly by. Conversation that is slow like honey leaves the sweetest taste. So let small become big, and big become a beginning. Because in life, one conversation may unveil another, but you’ll never know until you give the first one a shot.

Magic in Madness: Learn To Love Mercury Retrograde

In the words of T Swift, "haters gonna hate, hate, hate" but we think mercury retrograde deserves a chance to shake it off and start over. Famously feared for technological disasters, communication blunders and general life-madness, Mercury retrograde can also be a beautiful opportunity to switch gears and grow.

The next mercury retrograde is coming up on December 5th, and we plan on taking a more positive approach: Feng Shui expert, Dana Claudet, is breaking it down and sharing a few practical tips to make this upcoming merc retro more, er, palatable... 

What is Mercury Retrograde?

Mercury retrograde is the term given to the three times a year that the Earth, in its orbit, passes by the slower moving planet Mercury. As this happens, Mercury seems to be moving backward in its orbit. The same happens when the Earth passes Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Pluto, Mars, Neptune and Uranus - they appear to move backward, “in retrograde.”

Its reputation: It’s no secret that Mercury retrograde has a life-scrambling reputation! In astrology, it’s the planet that rules communication and transportation among other important things. Modern-day astrological interpretations of Mercury retrograde include tech problems like computer crashes, flights being cancelled and being advised to avoid signing contracts or starting new things, at all costs.

But we’re talking about more than two months out of every a year, and I don’t feel that anyone should be in fear or anticipating the worst for even a day -- and two-plus months is extreme, you know? Awesome astrologers like the Astro Twins point out often that there’s almost always some sort of major planetary retrograde happening that affects us… and there’s no reason to focus on the negative.

Merc Retro's deeper meaning: Communication and transportation - how we move through our days and connect to our lives - are in the spotlight. If these things are symbolically slowing down, maybe that’s the big lesson? Slowing down. Preparing more. Connecting more. In all the rushing we tend to do, big details get glossed over sometimes but when we slow down they can come to light. Also, the maintenance that hasn’t happened (…like backing up the computer, or taking your car in for maintenance, or reading the contract clearly) can also become clear.

Anticipating things going wrong each Mercury retrograde seemed to bring terrible things to my own life (it’s even been proven in many scientific studies that we get more of what we expect!), so when I shifted to seeing Mercury retrograde as an extra-special time to get more grounded, mindful and organized, these months every year turned from anxiety-inducing to an opportunity to upgrade life.

How to redeem the retrograde for yourself: Just that - redeem it! Decide it’s going to be amazing, avoid reading doom-saying posts (!) and instead of looking at obstacles that pop up as a cosmic curse, perhaps you can see them as an opportunity to upgrade, rest and reset yourself?!

Conceptually, think of it this way: In feng shui, when you clear lots of clutter you tend to see a wave of chaos -- like the giant mess when you pull everything out of a closet before it’s reorganized. Slowing down can show you some clutter you may not have seen before, and these big cosmic slow-downs are an opportunity to clear it all and connect much deeper to life in ways that are meaningful. You won’t just have a clear closet if you embrace more life de-cluttering, you’ll make more room for new opportunities, a clear mind, more wellness and lots of creative genius. So if things get stirred up, it can be a chance to make life even better!

Practically, a few things you can do are:

clear your clutter Let go of stuff at home and in the office that’s overstayed its welcome, along with the emails, the social media overwhelm… everything! You’ll make space for the new to arrive. Organize your calendar and, while you’re at it, schedule some time off for yourself if you can.

Experiment with space clearing Open windows for fresh air. Burn some sage or palo santo or diffuse some essential oils. Space clearing clears the air of negativity and stagnation. It’s clutter-clearing for your home’s energy, and it’s great to do anytime you need a fresh start.

Rest Sleep much more, long enough to wake up without an alarm if you can. Shut down the phone an hour or two before bed. Take more breaks and naps. If you’ve never explored the Hygge philosophy of cozy living, now’s a good time to do some comfy-making -- get more plush rugs or throw blankets, make lots of herbal tea, light candles and enjoy the bliss of it all.

Finish things Unfinished projects are a sneaky form of clutter that can weigh us down, and finishing even one unfinished project at home or at work can be life-lightening.

Start envisioning and planning When you’re well rested, clear minded and surrounded by clear space, you’ll likely have amazing ideas. Make yourself a vision board, a secret inspiration board on Pinterest, or start writing out exciting plans for brilliant things ahead.

The best part about Mercury retrograde is that if you slow down and flow with things, you might just find yourself feeling, looking and thinking better than ever… and when it’s over, you might be waiting for the next one!

Baby’s First Sound Bath: What to Know Before You Go

What soap and water (and a stunning claw foot tub) can do for our physical well being, a sound bath can do for our mental and spiritual well being. 

Tal Rabinowitz, founder of DEN Mediation -- and proud mama of a freshly opened new studio location in LA -- is sharing her ultimate guide to getting the most out of a sound bath experience. Whether you're a total newbie or just didn't get that into it the first time, these tips and insights will get you into a receptive state of mind -- and then maybe somewhere even sweeter...

As the world of spirituality is slowly creeping its way into the mainstream, sound baths are definitely trending these days. But what are they? A simple way to describe a sound bath would be like going to a musical concert that you get to lie down for with crystal bowls, gongs or other earthly instruments. At the very least, it can be a completely passive experience where you just listen to the sounds and relax (some people fall asleep), or you can enter a deeper state of meditation while being bathed by the healing vibration (hence the name sound bath!). This healing session is good for you physically and emotionally, helping to cure chronic pain and lessen anxiety, stress and depression. And as a bonus, it can spark creativity. Most people leave a sound bath feeling very relaxed, rebalanced and some are ready to roll into bed and take a nap!

If you have never been to a sound bath here are some little tips to think about:

Each experience is different. There are different practitioners, different types of sound baths and different instruments… so each experience will be different -- try a few. If one doesn’t resonate with you, don’t assume you will dislike them all. Also, even if you kept going to the same sound bath, each time will be unique to you. One of our DEN practitioners, Pamela Robins, likes to point out, “You may fall asleep in one session, yet in another session you may have realizations about an issue you are having. You could feel complete bliss or you could be very aware of your body and sensations that you are feeling.” Be aware that it will be different for you each time, but usually you experience exactly what you need to experience.

Wear comfortable clothing. Some spaces provide all the cushions and blankets, but always ask if you need to bring stuff as you want to be comfortable! You will probably be lying there for 1-3 hours, depending on how long your sound bath is. When your body enters a meditative state, its temperature does drop, so it is always good to have layers, to comfortable and warm.

It may be crowded. Be prepared to be lying near someone you don’t know. Your feet may be inches from someone else’s. Piece of advice: Close your eyes, let this experience become your own and know that the energy of others actually does help strengthen the experience.

Position yourself comfortably You will be in this position for a while, so do what works for you. If you need your knees up, do it that way. If you like to be on your side, do it that way. If sitting is ultimately better for you, that’s okay too. The more comfortable you are, the better your experience will be, so cozy on up!

Louder than you think You think, "Crystal bowl, how loud can this be?" There are times you feel like you are right next to a speaker and then you realize the bowl that is being played is on the other side of the room. It can be a lot louder than expected, which makes the physical vibrations more intense. You will “feel” the sounds. Ultimately, you want to feel the vibrations, so this is a good, thing, but it can be a bit surprising for people.

Snoring warning It happens, some people fall asleep, and it could be you. If it is you, remember, that may be exactly what you need. Your body is probably very tired and needs the break. If it’s not you and you hear snoring and it is making you want to get up and scream in the middle of this serene and peaceful event, try and concentrate on the sounds of the instruments, and remember that the snorer probably really needs the rest.

Can be intense but be open For some people, this can be a very intense time: They are not used to being still with their thoughts for an extended amount of time and that can be a bit overwhelming. So be open to anything that may come up for you. If you are anxious, just label it anxiety and pay attention to the fact that you struggle in this state. This alone is a huge revelation for you and something to work with. Try and concentrate on breathing or listening to the different sounds to give yourself something “to do.” Also, you may all of a sudden feel like crying and don’t know why. You may also feel like laughing. That’s okay too and all part of the experience. Let these emotions happen. These are all good releases.

The more active you are in this passive activity, the better One of our practitioners at The DEN, Susan Paul, would say, “I want you to feel. I’m not here to just create sound for you, it’s a place for you to connect with mind, body and soul and to understand that you yourself are a frequency like the sound. Tap into your feeling; where does it resonate for you and what does it bring up? Are you feeling it in the ears? In your hip? What emotions are coming up for you?” Basically, if you are comfortable with working with what comes up for you, you can get a lot more than a power nap out of this experience.

Take a moment before you leave You can feel a bit light headed, tired or loopy after a sound bath. Take a moment, have some tea and relax before you get behind that wheel and drive home!

Pee before the sound bath! This may be the most important. You will be there and if you can have one less distraction for yourself and those around you, it will just make the experience so much better.

Types of sound baths: Just like there are different bands and performers for concerts, the same goes for sound baths. There are different types of sound baths and methods of sound healing. Each experience is different depending on your teacher and also their choice of instruments. Some teachers these days combine a lot of the below and add many other instruments including chimes, voice and different types of drums... but at the core, this is how we can explain it simplistically. Try them all; you don’t know how you respond until you try!

Chakra bowls - These are quartz bowls that work with the chakra system. So each bowl is carved to specifically create notes and vibrations that correspond to a certain energy center of your body. It’s a gentle way to introduce the body to each frequency. In simple speak, these are frequencies your body is already comfortable with. Good for beginners!

Tibetan bowls & gongs (metals) - Like the chakra bowls, they work a specific note, however because they are metals they can be a bit harsher, but in a good way. By being a bit harsher, they are great for people who have blocks. Since they do run off our meridian lines like acupuncture, they tap into the meridians of our organ system, really helping people who have resistance in different areas of their body. You will be surprised how relaxing a gong can be!

Sound technology - The instrument used here is usually a synthesizer or vacuum tubes, all programmed at a certain pitch -- a lot of times at 432Hz, which is a known healing frequency. This modern technology is performed live and the specific frequencies create the desired effect of the practitioner. This could at times be overwhelming for a beginner as these frequencies do not exist in every day life, so you are being taken to a different level. This is a very fun, trippy and modern experience.

Gem stones - Gem stones, like the manufactured sound above, can also be intense as they can create frequencies that are not part of your every day life. The benefit, however, is that you can be taken to a deep place in your meditation. Also, what is unique here is that each gem has its own healing properties, so depending which gem you are using, the vibrations are specific to that gem. With these bowls, you want a very experienced practitioner who can tune in to people and what they need.

Party Season Beauty: Try Our Favorite Colored Eyeliner Look

You know them, you love them: the smokey eye, the bold brow, the statement lip -- all the easy-drama beauty looks we can't quit come holiday party season. This year we're weaving in a new knockout style that's gently edgy, modern and basically made for your LVD (little velvet dress, obvi). We’re currently experiencing a time in fashion and beauty history when there are no rules - particularly when it comes to makeup. One day a bold furry brow is a must, the next it’s all about the contrasting lip and cheek color. Something called the ‘unicorn highlight’ is all the rage one day, and the next magazines are calling for nothing but naked, matte cheekbones.

This absence of ‘must-dos’ works in our favor, for sure, and I’d like to encourage you to try something that you’d previously thought wasn’t for you. And I’d like to suggest that maybe that thing that you’ve never tried but is going to become your new favorite is colored eyeliner. Use one with bits of shimmer, and you no longer need flashy jewelry around your face; your eyes are your dazzling, amped up, jewels.

Just like there’s no rule dictating that you must only wear black or brown liner, there’s also no hard fast rule for where exactly to place your liner. The options are endless, and truly depend on what you like best. Here's how to wear colored eyeliner...


how to - THE CHUNKY, CREAMY EYESHADOW STICK

The easiest type of eyeliner that truly works for all eye shapes is the chunky, creamy eyeshadow stick.

It’s a misnomer to call it just a shadow, because it does double duty; smear it across your lids and blend it into shape with your finger, and you’ve got an eyeshadow thing happening. But use a dome-shaped brush or a lipstick brush to pick up product, and then swipe it along the top (and in between) your lashes… and it’s a whole different thing. Far more refined and deliberate than a sweep of shadow, but less fussy and precise than an actual tight line of liner. It can be as densely pigmented or as sheer as you want, if you apply it this way.

Fall/winter favorites: Ilia ‘Take On Me.’ Think: sheer, deep red wine mixed with metallic shimmer. It’s so good. Juice Beauty ‘Fog’ is a creamy charcoal grey that looks fantastic smudged around all eye colors - especially with a few coats of mascara to make it really pop!


how to - traditional PENCIL LINER

The traditional pencil liner, only not in black or brown, is another very easy to apply, good-for-all-eye-shapes option. Smudge - or draw a precise line - with a pencil liner along the top lashes, and a light smudge of color along the outer third of the bottom lash line. I tend to like the look of a slightly smudged liner (unless I’m going for the crisp, clean look of, say, a cat eye), and I love to smash the color into the lash line (in between lashes and along the top of them) before putting on mascara.

A real showstopper: Ilia’s ‘My Generation,’ a hybrid of muted violet and deep rich red that looks amazing on brown, green, and hazel eyes.


how to - dramatic Liquid liner

Some lids look best completely colored in with an exaggerated wing or with only the most whisper thin line with no tail at all. Liquid liner is by far the most difficult for most people to get the hang of, but once you do (full disclosure: I still struggle with it sometimes), you’ll feel like you run the world.

Holiday choices: Zuzu liquid liner in ‘Peacock,’ which is the coolest somewhat electric, deep green. It’s a bold statement, but one that deserves a try.

Our Quick Reference Thanksgiving Survival Guide

Anyone who thinks they can make it through the holidays without succumbing to (over)indulgence is either a supernatural being or straight-up in denial. Instead of driving ourselves crazy with rigid restrictions, we prefer to let balance be the goal.

Every year we source new strategies from our fave wellness pros -- like this one from nutritionist Lauren Felts and these from functional medicine doctor Mark Hyman. Below we're sharing a few of our holiday eating tips from years past; read on for tips are easy, effective and might just save the day... and the day after.

TAKE DIGESTIVE ENZYMES. The simple act of taking digestive enzymes when eating desserts and heavy foods can vastly improve our body’s ability to process them. Digestive enzymes are released by your saliva, stomach, pancreas and your small intestine, but oftentimes the body is unable to produce adequate amounts, especially when unhealthy foods are consumed. As a result, the food is not properly broken down, leaving it to rot in the digestive tract. This leads to toxin production in the body, and symptoms such as indigestion, constipation, bloating and even more severe conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, headaches and inflammation can occur. Take a broad spectrum digestive enzyme complex that contains the enzymes amylase, lipase, maltase, pepsin, cellulase, lactase, protease and invertase. One of our favorites is Premier Digest by Premier Research Labs

DON’T GET SKIMPY. Begin your day as any other day on the plan; do not skip meals to save calories or carbohydrates. Don't try to avoid snacks if you're hungry. Having a protein-packed snack an hour before your holiday meal can help assuage hunger and help you make better decisions.

SET INTENTIONS. Set an intention for how you would like to feel after the meal and hold yourself accountable by sharing with a close friend or family member. Or write it in your journal. Be aware of your options, chose wisely. Don’t think of the holidays as an excuse to gorge on unhealthy food. Plan in advance to make sure there are options available that you can enjoy.

PRE-HYDRATE. Drink two glasses of water with lemon before the meal.

EAT MINDFULLY. Try these tips to eat your meal mindfully:

+ Take five deep breaths before your meal.
+ Sit next to someone you genuinely find interesting and engage in pleasant conversation.
+ Appreciate the colors and smells of your food.
+ Chew thoroughly and slowly.
+ Put your fork down between bites.
+ Breathe in through your nose while you eat.
+ Express gratitude with others before the meal.
+ Have a trusted friend or family help hold you accountable for your goals.
+ Halfway through the meal, put fork down and pause. Take three deep breaths and assess your hunger on a scale of 1-10. Ask yourself how much more you need to eat in order to walk away feeling energized and comfortable. Hint: Usually, this is around “6” or “7.”
+ Close your meal by saying something out loud about how delicious it was and how satisfied you are. Hearing yourself say this can help signal to you and others that you are finished.

Orange Is The New RosÉ: Inside Our Workshop with Helen Johannesen

"Awesome wine makes you feel awesome" -- preach. We love these wise words from Helen Johannesen, the rad lady who runs Helen's Wines, an eponymous natural wine boutique inside LA's Jon + Vinny's, as well as the wine and bar programs for other quintessential hotspots like Animal, Trois Mex, Trois Familia and Sun of a Gun (We know. Impressive.)

For our most recent beauty gathering inside The Detox Market in Santa Monica, Helen joined Napa native and culty beauty founder, April Gargiulo of Vintner's Daughter to talk all things natural, from wine to skincare, and what it's like to be a mission-driven woman in business.

As we sipped our way through the tasting customized for our class, Helen spilled everything (but the wine itself) on cultivation and production practices, navigating a wine menu, and why drinking natural wine really is better for our health. Watch the full chat here and pick up our favorite learnings below...

Orange Wine is the new Rosé. 

If you're not already obsessed, now is the time to jump in; orange wine is about to be a red hot thing. Orange wine is made from leaving the skins on white wine grapes as they ferment. The result is a glass that's as bright and easy to drink as your fave summer rose. Check out our Facebook Live with Helen to learn which bottles she's loving most.

natural wines are Low-Alcohol Wines.
There's a time and place for a 15% full-bodied red, but Helen typically prefers wine that's closer to 12%. Not only is it less intoxicating (we get more glasses of it!), but it's healthier too. Low alcohol indicates low sugar (it's science, people) and that means less of a hangover the next day. The good news: most naturally made wines are also lower in alcohol!

Know Who's Behind Your Bottle.
Admittedly, it takes a bit of work to find specific winemakers whose practices and product are natural and clean. Memorize a list of distributors instead. According to Helen, this is a foolproof way to judge the quality of your wine. If you're ordering with a somm, drop a few of these distributors name and they'll get the right idea.

There's A Perfect Wine for Thanksgiving.
Beaujolais is the wine that "turned me onto natural wines" - it's also Helen's recommendation for the ultimate Thanksgiving wine (her other picks are gamay and cab franc).

The 'Rule' of Gifting Wine.
Helen shared that, when gifting wine at a party, she always brings one bottle to drink now and another for the friend to drink later. As a rule, if gifting a bottle of wine, don't necessarily expect the pal to open there and then! By gifting 'Helen style' the feeling of abundance creates a sense of ease; enjoy now, enjoy later, just be sure you enjoy.

The creepiest wine ingredient Ever.
Did you know some wine makers mix shrimp shells into their recipes to help clarify the color of the wine? If that doesn't turn you into a natural wine freak, we may not be able to help you.

Going Natural With Wine Actually Matters
It's not just for the niche conversations. Unlike other food products, wine doens't have a nutrition label, an ingredient list or many regulations to speak of at all. Making an effort to drink natural wines means we're more likely to avoid creepy ingredients, unethical production methods, and sugar overload. Start small -- begin by learning about the winemakers behind your favorite varietals.

Learning About Wine is Easy.
The best way to learn about wine is to try a bunch and take notes. Learn what you like, where it comes from, and think about what flavors you might detect (if you're a newbie or just plain stumped Helen says just fake it til you make it!). A Day In The Biodynamic Life With Molly of Apricot Lane Farms

There's no such thing as sleeping in at Apricot Lane Farms, but there are also biodynamic avocadoes, stone fruits and farm fresh eggs within arm's reach at all times. Not a bad way to live.

Cruise up the coast from Los Angeles, take a few winding turns down a dusty dirt road or two, and eventually you'll come upon the stunning grounds of Apricot Lane Farms. This sprawling slice of organic heaven, just 40 miles north of the big city, is home to goats, sheep, ducks, hens, cows, biodynamic certified avocado and lemon orchards, a vast vegetable garden, and over seventy-five different varieties of stone fruit. The farm is living proof that better farming practices are possible and can still yield a booming business.

The farm's founders, filmmaker John Chester and his wife, Chef Molly Chester, believe in sustainability and transparency over all else. Their commitment to organic and biodynamic farming and other traditional practices is an impressive example for us all. What We Learned From Martha Stewart’s New Slow Cooker Cookbook

If you don't currently use a slow cooker, these tips from the OG queen of cozy living just might convert you. Martha's just released cookbook, Martha Stewart's Slow Cooker: 110 Recipes for Flavorful, Foolproof Dishes (Including Desserts!), Plus Test- Kitchen Tips and Strategies (Actual title! Whew!) is a guide no home cook should live without. Next stop? The farmers market...

For more than a year, our editors and recipe developers embraced the task of creating recipes that maximize all the slow cooker’s assets and make up for some of its well-known limitations. At the same time, they heartily took on the challenge of adapting many of our favorite dishes to the machine’s distinctive cooking method. In doing so, they became quite enamored - you could say surprisingly so - of the appliance that’s long been loved by legions of home cooks. Our cooks researched, read up, dug in and, more than anything, rolled up their sleeves and got into the kitchen to figure out what the slow cooker is good at, what it’s great at and - at times - where the pitfalls lie. After that intensive study, and the intensive tasting and tweaking that went along with it, here are our so-called commandments:

Forget About “Forgetting It”We got better results when we didn’t simply turn on the switch and walk away for the day. While the appliance is known for cooking weeknight dinners, we really loved it for preparing big-batch recipes on weekends — the kinds of afternoons when you’re in and out of the house on errands. Great results came with being mindful of what was in the pot, when we could occasionally open the lid and give it a stir (bottom line: not often), and which heat setting would result in the very best flavors and textures.

Don’t Just Dump Simply scraping chopped vegetables and some meat straight from the cutting board into the pot with a handful of dried seasonings might not taste so good six hours from now. Invest 10 to 20 minutes at the start of the process: Go ahead and sauté those onions, carrots and celery, and don’t skip the step of browning that roast (on all sides!); this will encourage the flavors to develop more fully and get richer with time.

Be Wary of too Many Shortcuts

In researching popular slow-cooker recipes, some struck us as a mash-up of processed, packaged foods -- like instant gravy mix stirred into canned soup topped with a packet of powdered salad dressing! Not surprisingly, we found the best flavors resulted from using the freshest ingredients. The shortcut we relied on first and foremost was the slow cooker itself.

Relax + Let The Machine Take Charge
The slow cooker is a refuge for the impatient. Maybe you are the type of cook who is always trying to rush things -- “simmer” to you means a low boil, or you occasionally burn onions in an (admittedly too hasty) effort to caramelize them, or you have ruined a pan or two with scorched sauces. If that sounds familiar, you’ll be relieved to know you can trust this appliance to perfectly poach fish and poultry and caramelize onions and simmer sauces without constant checking and stirring.

Let Texture Guide You

Select tough, inexpensive cuts of meat that stand up to slow, steady, moist heat (pork shoulder, beef brisket and lamb shanks are great for long braising; prime rib, not so much). Avoid anything that cooks quickly and perfectly on the stovetop or grill -- in other words, tender chops and other lean meats. Root vegetables, too, develop great flavor and maintain their shape and much of their hardiness in the slow cooker, while many delicate vegetables are still best simply - and briefly - steamed on the stove.

Cook Once, Serve Multiple Meals

The slow cooker lets you prepare ahead and jump-start dinners throughout the week. Braise a pork shoulder to make porchetta, for example, and - depending on your last-minute prep, condiments and an array of garnishes and toppings - you can serve it on a platter with fresh tomatoes and salsa verde one night, in sandwiches with garlicky greens the next, or over creamy polenta and so on.

Finish With Color + Crunch

For the most satisfying meals, round out the slow-cooked main course with fresh herbs and vegetables, mixed greens or diced onion. These toppings and sides bring welcome texture and snap.

Deploy the Machine as a Space Saver

When your oven is crowded with the main course (like a holiday roast) and casseroles or even desserts, use the slow cooker for sides, such as potatoes or squash. When your stovetop is fully engaged, let the slow cooker step in as a low burner. (It can also be used to reheat mashed potatoes, say, or as a warming dish for cooked pasta.)

Keep Your Cool

You might think of autumn and winter as slow-cooker season, but the machine especially shines in the hot summer months, because you can cook dinner without heating up the kitchen. Beer-braised pork ribs only sound like they came off the backyard grill -- make them in the slow cooker and serve with chilled slaw, potato salad and more beer (!) on a steamy summer night.

Realize How Sweet It Is!The slow cooker may be known for savory foods, but it also turns out excellent desserts -- custards and puddings, fruit crisps and buckles, even cheesecake! Keep in mind that unlike soups or stews, “baking” in a slow cooker needs to be watched a bit more closely. Depending on the strength of your machine, the batter may be more or less cooked in the time suggested. It’s particularly great for custards and puddings when you use it as a bain-marie. You are just one slow cooker (and a butane torch) away from crème brûlée!

We've met many a glowy wellness girl in our day. Some stars shine brighter than others, and raw food chef, plant-based nutritionist and wellness pro, Summer Sanders, just has that spark.

How To Bounce Back From Adrenal Burnout – 5 Essential Steps

Burnout is basically a right of passage in the modern working world, but that doesn't mean it's right -- or unavoidable. Functional medicine doctor Mark Hyman is talking to us about adrenal burnout and sharing simple tips to beat stress and help get our flame back, balanced and shining bright...

Why Are Adrenals Important?

Your adrenals are important because they help you respond to stress. If you have chronic stress, your adrenals get beat up, your energy plummets and it becomes difficult to manage your life. You could feel tired and wired, all at the same time. You might get palpitations or feel anxious or have trouble sleeping. You might crave salt. You may get dizzy when you stand up. You might have low blood pressure. You might even have sugar cravings, because your body can’t regulate your blood sugar properly. All these are clues that you could have adrenal problems.

Why Do We Get Adrenal Burnout?

We get it from the chronic, unremitting, ongoing stresses of everyday life: stresses of our families, stresses of relationships, stresses of work, the stresses of constant interaction with Facebook and Twitter and the online world, and all the inputs that never let us pause.

It’s really important to understand how the whole stress response works, why it goes wrong and why, over time, your adrenal glands, which are these little glands that sit on the top of your kidneys, are not able to compensate for the chronic stress that you have in your life.

At The UltraWellness Center, we do saliva testing to measure cortisol levels throughout the day. When you have adrenal burnout, your cortisol starts to go down and you can’t respond normally to the stresses of life; you end up just feeling tired and crummy most of the time. We push ourselves with coffee and other stimulants to feel better – but using these tactics doesn’t really work.

How Do Can We Bounce Back?

Eat To Heal. First, I recommend eating a whole-food, anti-inflammatory diet (find a list of top anti-inflammatory food here). Focus on anti-inflammatory foods including wild fish and other sources of omega-3 fats; red and purple berries (rich in polyphenols); dark green leafy vegetables; orange sweet potatoes; and nuts. Add anti-inflammatory herbs – including turmeric (a source of curcumin), ginger and rosemary – to your daily diet. Eliminate inflammatory foods such as refined, omega-6 and inflammatory oils, like corn, soy and safflower oils. And don’t skip meals. It can be hard for your body to recover from skipping meals if you have adrenal dysfunction.

Chill The F Out. Next, find ways to actively relax. I like to do yoga or take a hot bath at night. I call it the UltraBath, where you take two cups of Epsom salts, half a cup of baking soda, 10 drops of lavender oil and you soak for 20 minutes. Did you know that they put lavender oil in babies’ baths? They do this because lavender oil lowers cortisol and helps to balance the whole hormonal system. After this bath, you will end up with a really decreased stress response. There are other things you can do, as well. Massage is great, as is meditation and deep breathing.

gentle exercise. Very simple things have profound effects. Exercise is always important — gentle, regular exercise like a morning walk, a light jog, a little bike ride. Do something out in the fresh air to get natural light that affects your pineal gland and helps reset your brain, your nervous system and the stress response.

create life rhythms. I also recommend regular rhythm. Rhythm is the key because your hormones are balanced in rhythms. So, waking at the same time every day, going to bed at the same time every day, eating at the same time every day — these are the rhythms in life that help to reset your natural balance. Following your natural rhythms of work and rest during the day is also essential. Take natural breaks when you are tired. Our bodies function best on ultradian rhythm cycles of 90 minutes of activity punctuated by a few minutes of resting or zoning out! Naps are also a great way to reset. If you are all over the place, your adrenals are going to burn out.

Stress Resilience with Supplements. Supplements are one of the simplest ways to boost your adrenals. We use a lot of wonderful herbs at The UltraWellness Center called adaptogens because they help you adapt to stress. Try adding the following to your daily supplement routine to help balance adrenals:

Siberian Ginseng, Rhodiola or Cordyceps: All wonderful herbs that also help your stress response. I use Adreset, (1 to 2 caps, twice a day) with my patients.

Ashwagandha, Magnolia, Theanine (from green tea) + PhosphatidyLserine: These can all help calm an overactive stress response and improve sleep. The combination I use successfully with my patients is Cortisol Manager (1 or 2 at night).

Other Vitamins: Vitamin C (500 to 1000mg, once a day), zinc (30mg, once a day) and vitamins, especially vitamin B5 (2, once a day)

So, if you have any of the symptoms listed above, if you’re worried about your adrenal stress response, if you’re thinking that you might have adrenal burnout, I encourage you to take some time, find things you like to do to hit your pause button, get into rhythm, try a few vitamins and herbs and reset your life.
