Inside The Daily Diet Of Gastroenterologist, Roshini Raj, MD

Roshini Raj, M.D and gut health

It's hard to imagine too much being said on the importance of gut health, but we're definitely starting to feel the media fatigue as so many more studies and resources become available. So who better to get the best word on what everyone actually needs to do for gut health than someone who supports people with intestinal health on a daily basis: a gastroenterologist.

We tapped Roshini Raj, M.D, a graduate of Harvard College and NYU School of Medicine, board-certified gastroenterologist and author, to find out what her personal routine looks like for gut health. Dr. Raj is a big proponent of fiber intake for gut health. Our favorite way to up our intake with ease? Bellway Super Fiber + Fruit (Shop for 10% off with code 10CHALKBOARD) in raspberry lemon!

Name: Roshini Raj, MD author of Gut Renovation: Unlock the Age-Defying Power of the Microbiome to Remodel Your Health from the Inside Out

What I wish more people understood about gut health: Your gut health impacts more than just digestion – it has far reaching effects on almost every aspect of your health, from mood to weight gain, sleep to aging, immunity and more!

My mission in a nutshell: Give people the tools to take care of their gut health so that they are living their  best and healthiest lives.

My day typically starts with... 5 minutes of deep breathing, 40 minutes of aerobic exercise and then breakfast: a glass of lemon water and a bowl of fiber cereal mixed with greek yogurt, berries, chia seeds, and ground flax seeds.

I‘d describe my diet as... Colorful, unprocessed and delicious!

My stance on coffee and gut health: Studies have shown that regularly drinking coffee is linked to a healthier microbiome - the phytochemicals in coffee are beneficial both to the intestinal cells as well as the microbiome itself. But, be careful of what you put in your coffee because, if you are loading it with sugar, this can be detrimental to your microbiome. Also, certain gut conditions like acid reflux are made worse with coffee.

healthy coconut yogurt parfait recipe from kelly leveque

3 morning staples for a healthy gut: Yogurt with live and active cultures (to get a dose of probiotics), mixed berries (prebiotics), flax/chia (fiber, omega-3s, antioxidants), water (helps digestion run smoothly).

Lunch is usually... Grilled salmon or chicken with mixed vegetables (spinach, eggplant, mushrooms, red pepper), cannellini beans.

7 gut healthy staples always in my kitchen: Yogurt, frozen berries, fiber cereal, cinnamon, turmeric, raisins, nuts.

Most impactful new research on gut health lately: The mind-gut connection has become more understood as research shows us the two way connection here. As mental health concerns soar I think it is so important to understand how gut health may play a role.

My best advice for those with gastrointestinal problems, but aren’t getting helpful direction from their doctor: Any time you are not getting help from your doctor it is probably time to find a new one. But in the meantime, just keeping track of your food intake, sleep and exercise habits may clue you in to what is going on – since all of those greatly impact gut health.

Gut health supplements I’m taking or want more people to know about: I recommend Bellway fiber for those days when you don’t feel like you are getting the recommend daily amount of fiber (which is sadly most days for many Americans). You can try Bellway for 10% off in any flavor with this link

My workout lately: I either do 40 minutes on the elliptical machine plus 10 minutes of core and exercises or a 30 minute HIIT workout.

Dinner is usually... Stir fry tofu with vegetables or chickpea pasta with walnut pesto and chicken.

Late night snacks: Yay, Nay or Depends? I don’t recommend eating right before bed especially of you are prone to acid reflux but an evening snack I like is air popped popcorn with garlic salt—great source of fiber.

Nighttime routine for optimizing gut wellness: Good sleep is great for your gut so I turn off devices and/or put away my phone at least 30 minutes before bed. I read for about 20-30 minutes to relax my mind, put in my earplugs, turn on the noise machine, and go to sleep.

Shop Bellway this fall! Use code 10CHALKBOARD for 10% off all Bellway products on Amazon. Valid through October 1, 2023 11:59 PM PDT.

M Florens hair oil

Mflorens No.2 Scalp and Hair Serum We discovered MFLORENS during this dreamy beauty experience with Ricari Studios. The beautifully bottled hair serum is made with more than fifty nutrient-rich botanicals that work synergistically to reduce inflammation and boost circulation. They also smell incredible.

The founder of MFLORENS developed the oil serums after suffering from a dramatic case of alopecia. Since many of us are new to scalp oil and the like, we asked her what we could expect from the product. She told us that users should expect "increased new hair growth after 8-12 weeks, a soothed, nourished and moisturized scalp and hair that is shinier, silkier and more voluminous."

Work the oil into the scalp for an overnight treatment or before a long work session or movie night at home.

The founder tells us that "Biologically, anatomically, it is possible to increase the number and the depth of hair follicles. It requires three things: early, proactive scalp care on a level akin to skincare, formulations using the optimal active ingredients, and natural, rich ingredients with utmost integrity."

What Is The Fawn Response? An Insightful Excerpt From Ashley Neese’s New Book

permission to rest by ashley neese

Ashley Neese is my breathwork coach -- something I never knew I needed in my life until I did a few sessions with Ashley and realized that her work was an absolute non-negotiable for my nervous system and mental health.

Since working with Ashley, I've had several key wellness professionals note to me their transformational experiences with her. She is a highly compassionate healer whose wisdom around nervous system health is so useful it is near mystical.

In her second book, Permission to Rest Ashley pours out insight after insight. Her tools and reflections for frayed and overworked nerves are a balm for the modern soul.

In this brief excerpt, Ashley defines a stress response we hear too little about -- the fawn response. Read, learn, and then swipe up a copy of this beautiful book for yourself...

Fight or Flight We Know, But What Is The Fawn Response?

We’ve discussed the classic chronic stress responses of hyperarousal and hypoarousal and explored the fight-or-flight response in connection to the stress response cycle. In recent years, another response has been added to the conversation: the fawn response, a term coined by Pete Walker, MFT, in his book Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving. This bears mentioning because it has a strong relationship to our ability to downshift into rest.

Like fight, flight, and freeze, fawn is a physiological response to a threat or stress. The fawn response is directly connected to social hierarchies and other oppressive systems in our culture because the reality is that not everyone gets to fight or flee in a dangerous or threatening situation. Many of us have learned that our lives will go smoother if we learn to fawn, or appease, people instead. This can take on several different forms, including not speaking up, bypassing conflict, saying yes when you want to say no, people-pleasing, meddling, not having boundaries, deferring to others, and not sharing your own opinions and desires.

And this leads us back to rest. A big part of learning to rest is to uncover the ways that we have been appeasing others, avoiding ourselves and our own needs. There is often so much shame attached to keeping ourselves safe, and that shame lives within our bodies. A fawn response leads to disconnecting from the sensations in our bodies, disconnecting from our needs and emotions. A fawn response is habitual, meaning we can and will people-please automatically. If we’re feeling detached from ourselves, it’s hard to access rest. If we’re people-pleasing, we will put other people’s needs, wants, and desires before our own, often at the expense of ourselves and our rest. If you’re wanting support in healing your fawn responses, I suggest starting with the rest practice Somatic Boundaries in this book (see page 116). Healing our habitual fawn responses takes time, patience, and a willingness to slow down. And like rest, it is challenging and essential work.

Eating For Fertility: A Full Day of Nourishing Meal + Snack Ideas

eating for fertility

Laura Fletcher, CD (DONA) is the author of The Grace in Grief: Healing and Hope After Miscarriage.. As the founder of Selah Fertility, Laura shares her own journey with PCOS, Endometriosis and MTHFR and has made it her mission to equip individuals with the tools they need to optimize their health and fertility. With that in mind we asked her to share what a day of eating for fertility could look like and these are the insights she shared with us...

Eating For Fertility: A Full Day of Nourishing Meals

When most people think of nutrition as it relates to reproduction, they think of what to eat (or avoid) during pregnancy; however, nutrition prior to conception is incredibly important. I like to think about fertility as an extension of our overall wellness and nutrition as a vital part of that wellness.

Of foremost importance when eating for fertility is eating real, whole, nutrient dense foods in their most unadulterated state. For egg and sperm quality, I recommend focusing on protein, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, and antioxidant rich vegetables and fruits.

Upon waking...

Drink a glass of warm water with fresh lemon juice or apple cider vinegar and a scoop of high-quality collagen.

A High-Protein Breakfast

Try this Ham and Cheese Omelet with Sautéed Spinach and Berries. Modify it any way you like with nutrient-dense and high-protein ingredients.

Ingredients:
1 teaspoon high quality avocado oil
2 large pasture raised organic eggs
3 oz sliced heritage ham
2 oz raw milk cheddar
2 cups organic fresh spinach
¼ cup organic blueberries
1 teaspoon Celtic sea salt

Directions:
Heat non-toxic pan (we prefer cast iron or stainless steel) at a medium heat.
Once pan is hot, add avocado oil
Beat eggs and pour into pan once oil is hot (should be shimmering)
Once eggs start to cook on the edges, add sliced ham and cheese
Once cheese starts to melt, fold half of omelet onto itself
Slide omelet onto a plate and throw the cup on spinach into the hot pan. Drizzle with additional oil if necessary and cover for two minutes on low heat.
Sprinkle salt onto the spinach once on the plate
Serve with blueberries and enjoy!

Midmorning Snack:

Go with a smoothie like this Avocado Coconut Milk Smoothie. Packed with healthy fats, greens and energizing superfoods!

Ingredients:
½ organic avocado
½ cup organic coconut milk (try to get one without guar gum!)
½ banana
1 teaspoon of bee pollen
1 teaspoon of local raw honey
½ cup of mixed organic berries
½ cup of organic bone broth
1 tablespoon of spirulina powder
½ cup of cooked beets

Directions:
Add ingredients to blender and blend until emulsified
Enjoy!

Nutrient-Dense Lunch:

This recipe might sound unusual, but this Salmon Salad Stuffed Sweet Potato is truly addictive. Complex carbs, omega-rich salmon, plus nutritious yogurt and veggies make for a balanced meal that won't weigh you down.

Ingredients:
4-6oz wild caught salmon
3 tablespoon high quality avocado oil
1 oz olives
½ oz capers
2 tbsp Greek yogurt
1 sweet potato
1 tsp Celtic sea salt

Directions:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees
Coat salmon in avocado oil and salt and place skin down on parchment paper lined baking tray
Coat sweet potato in avocado oil
Bake salmon at 400 degrees for 15-18 minutes
Bake sweet potato at 400 degrees for 45 minutes (flip over halfway through)
Combine all other ingredients and add salmon once it cools
Scoop salmon salad onto baked sweet potato
Enjoy!

Midafternoon Snack

Need a snack? Don't deny yourself. The simple match of sprouted almond butter with an organic apple will hydrate you and keep you energized through long afternoons.

A Balanced Dinner

Pack in the nutritious cruciferous veggies and root veggies with this simple Lamb Chops with Roasted Root Vegetables and Brussels Sprouts...

Ingredients:
6 lamb chops
1 cup seasonal root vegetables (I like to leave the skin on!)
1 cup trimmed and halved brussels sprouts
3 tablespoons of duck fat
Salt to taste

Directions:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees
Heat up a cast iron or stainless-steel skillet then add 2 tablespoon duck fat
Salt Brussels sprouts and root vegetables generously and sear in pan until browned on both sides
Move vegetables into oven for 20-25 minutes (flip halfway through)
Heat up a second cast iron or stainless-steel skillet then add 1 tablespoon duck fat
Season lamb chops with salt and sear each side until browned on each side
Allow lamb to rest for 5 minutes before serving

An Evening Snack

Liver pate is wildly nourishing. Try it paired with veggies and fermented veggies for a late night snack that's easy to digest.

Ingredients:
1 lb. pasture raised chicken liver or 1 lb. grass-fed calf liver
½ cup of raw milk cream (or grass-fed cream)
1 medium onion
3 teaspoons fresh Italian herbs (rosemary or thyme work well)
1 cup sliced mushrooms
2 teaspoons of Celtic sea salt
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
¼ cup of duck fat
3 cloves of crushed garlic

Directions:
Heat up a cast iron or stainless-steel skillet then add duck fat
Add garlic and onion to the pan
Once onion is slightly translucent, add mushrooms, liver, salt, and herbs
Move everything to blender and use vinegar and milk to deglaze the pan then add contents to the blender
Pulse until a paste forms
Refrigerate or freeze until ready for use
Serve with cucumbers and sauerkraut

Inside The Holistic Nighttime Skincare Routine Of A Beloved Los Angeles Facialist

Tess Adams facialist

Tess Adams is one of our go-to aestheticians here in L.A. She is the heartbeat of Take Care, the bi-coastal studio offering cutting edge modalities coupled with a deeply holistic approach we can't resist.

Take Care's LA studio is the ultimate aesthetic experience in Venice. Between tea ceremonies, microcurrent body treatments and microneedling facials with stem cells, you could consider this one of the ultimate wellness experiences available near the beach lately.

take care venice

Traveling regularly between LA, New York City and the Hamptons, Tess offers her covetable signature treatments to the brand's in-the-know clients wherever they need her. Her customizable combination of microcurrent, stem cells, microdermabrasion, LED therapy, oxygen, and microneedling are in demand from coast to coast.

So what does a pro on this level use in her own daily routine? Turns out it's a simple, super-charged and carefully crafted ritual reliant on some of the best products available...

Inside The Nighttime Skincare Routine Of Aesthetician Tess Adams of Take Care

“As a mother with a toddler, I max out the ritual of my nighttime routine. It is my alone time, it is sacred and deeply nourishing. Anyone who has small children will understand this!

As soon as the baby goes down, I draw my bath. I try to soak with Ancient Minerals epsom salt in the tub almost every night as it helps me ground. While the tub fills I take off the day by cleansing my face with Marie Veronique's Pure + E.O. Free Oil Cleanser. I prefer oil cleansing so that my makeup comes right off.

my beauty routine with tess adams

I like dry brushing with Primally Pure dry brushes. I have one for the body and one for the face. This is an energetic clearing as well as a physical one, helping to slough off dead skin cells and stimulate the lymphatic system. In the most arid times I follow dry brushing with an OSEA body oil before I get in the water. The heat of the bath helps the oil penetrate, calming the nervous system and giving me baby soft skin. Highly recommended!

Post-bath, I pat dry with a highly absorbant bamboo towel like this one from Luxome and spray Imber mist by REALEA with high-grade frankincense, colloidal silver and lemon balm over my face and décolleté. I pat in the extra mist, which helps maintain the skin's pH to ensure products penetrate optimally.

Aurora is my favorite product from hand-crafted California brand REALEA and the best part of my ritual. This healing balm is so rich and melts between my hands. I massage generously over my face and neck. Aurora has oil of egg yolk, a natural retinol, so I've been able to stop using my nightly retinol serum—one less step.

Next, I take my spiked jade roller from Cecily Braden and roll it over the magical products. I dress in a silk nightgown from AWAVEAWAKE so that my lymphatic system keeps flowing through the night!

I have a mantra practice that helps me to release fear before winding down: Shante Prashante Sarva Bhaya Upasha Mani Swaha. I repeat this mantra internally throughout the day and at this point in the evening I attempt a whole mala, a round of 108 repetitions. This really helps my nervous system power down! After this little ritual, I check on the baby, count my many blessings and it’s lights out until the baby wakes next.

This Revered Supplement Brand Launched A Home Line (Here’s Why You Need It)

Cymbiotika home cleaning

By now, as a Chalkboard reader, you’re likely aware that choosing the cleaning and self-care products in your home discerningly is crucial. We get a few eye rolls from friends and family when this topic comes up and we know you may too. Here’s what too many of us don’t realize:

+ While ingredient labeling is mandatory for food, cosmetics and drugs – it is not mandatory for cleaning products. Manufacturers aren’t required to disclose all ingredients in their cleaners, and many don’t, including some “green” cleaners brands.

+ Women apply over 300 chemicals daily to their bodies via soaps, cleaning solutions, makeup, hair products, lotions, and perfumes. And 80% of that is applied as part of a daily morning routine.

+ The Environmental Protection Agency says that indoor air quality can be five times worse than outdoor air quality.
Plus, they have various reports on how synthetic colors and dyes contain various chemicals that can negatively impact our skin and internal organs.

Consider how all this impacts on you and your family on a daily basis by simply enjoying the comfort and cleanliness of your home. The great news is that studies continue to take place on the impacts and in the Environmental Working Group’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning report, the only one of its kind, the organization reviewed more than 2,000 popular household cleaning products. There were 6 key highlights from the report that stood out for us specifically:

01 | Some 53 percent of cleaning products assessed by EWG contain ingredients known to harm the lungs. About 22 percent contain chemicals reported to cause asthma to develop in otherwise healthy individuals.

02 | Formaldehyde, a known human carcinogen, is sometimes used as a preservative or may be released by other preservatives in cleaning products. It may form when terpenes, found in citrus and pine oil cleaners and in some essential oils used as scents, react with ozone in the air.

03 | The chemical 1,4-dioxane, a suspected human carcinogen, is a common contaminant of widely used detergent chemicals.

04 | Chloroform, yet another suspected human carcinogen, sometimes escapes in fumes released by products containing chlorine bleach.

05 | Quaternary ammonium compounds (“quats”) like benzalkonium chloride, found in antibacterial spray cleaners and fabric softeners, can cause asthma.

06 | Sodium borate, also known as borax, and boric acid are added to many products as cleaning agents, enzyme stabilizers or for other functions. They can disrupt the hormone system.

The report also revealed that leading “green” brands sell superior products, among them Green Shield Organic and Whole Foods’ Green Mission brand, but not all cleaners marketed as environmentally conscious score high. Some “green” brands such as Earth Friendly Products do not disclose ingredients adequately.

So when Cymbiotika—a beloved brand of supplements that are designed to support the overall health of your body systems and overall well-being—introduces a line of household cleaning and self-care products, we were floored. We've already seen incredible results of their supplements first-hand, so we couldn't wait to bring their expertise and responsible approach into other areas of our home. The best news? The products are all plant-based and none of the ingredients indicated above appear in the line.

Everything You Need To Know About Cymbiotika Home Cleaning Products

cymbiotika handsoapProbiotic Hand Soap | Designed to not only cleanse your hands with aloe vera and apple amino acids, this nourishing hand soap supports the skin’s microbiome with probiotics. (Don’t forget your skin is your first line of defense!) They also use essential oils like lavender and peppermint oil to create a soothing aroma while staying completely fragrance-free.cymbiotika hand lotionProbiotic Hand Lotion | Another hand care product designed to support the skin’s microbiome with probiotics, this rich formula features almond oil and shea butter for buttery-soft skin. Plus, banana leaf extract is rich in flavonoids, enzymes, and active compounds that nourish and protect dry skin.
cymbiotika laundry detergentLaundry Detergent | Enzymes are the key to stain-lifting in this natural detergent. Most brands use two or three enzymes in their cleaning formulas... they use five. Formulated with a powerful blend of bio enzymes including protease, alpha-amylase, pectate lysase, mannase, lipase, and cellulase, these plant-based enzymes break down dirt and stains while keeping fabrics soft and colors bright.

Multi-Purpose Cleaner | Busting dirt and grime with enzymes are the key foundation of this multi-purpose cleanser as well. What Wellness Looks Like Now According To Methodology’s Julie Nguyen

methodology ceo and founder julie nguyen

When it comes to nutrition, the wellness scene has splintered in many directions lately -- whether plant-based, oxalate-free, paleo or carnivorous. After all, there is no 'one size fits all' diet, and a bit of diversity in these fast-paced wellness trends can be a good thing!

Julie Nguyen is the founder and CEO of Methodology, and knows the value of a diverse diet better than anyone. Methodology offers a high-end meal prep service for busy professionals who want "fine dining-quality, nourishing, delicious meals”. (Read: a clean, affordable alternative to addictive services like Doordash or Postmates).

Since her meal prep service offers such a wide array of dietary preferences, we sat down with Julie to ask her about what nutrition trends she's seeing now and how people are eating today specifically...

What Wellness Looks Like Now According To Julie Nguyen of Methodology

My own 'aha moment' with nutrition: I felt motivated to change my eating habits for good once I realized that my nutrition affected not only my weight but also my overall health and happiness. It was life-changing to move off all my prescription drugs, not have to carry an inhaler around anymore, clear my acne and eczema, and feel optimistic and energized like I was a teenager again.

3 Nutrition Trends You're Loving Now: 01 Maximizing plant variety in order to optimize gut health
02 The move away from large intermittent fasting windows and instead toward getting optimal protein every day
03 Training women to eat intuitively and in line with their monthly hormonal changes.
methodology nutritionNutrition Trend You're Ready To See Go: All of the vegan fake meats made with tons of processed ingredients. Though the creators were well-intentioned, I predicted from the beginning that this would be another “margarine” that we’d eventually drop in favor of eating whole foods from nature rather than food made in labs.

Your favorite Methodology dish this season: Our seasonal adaptogenic Relaxation Pumpkin Bread that sells out every Thanksgiving.

What changes have you seen in the way people eat this year? More carnivores? More vegans? There's so much good science emerging on both diets! We aren’t seeing more carnivores or vegans, but we are seeing more people lean toward the Mediterranean diet as they’ve realized it’s the most science-backed diet. We are clinically validated by Stanford University for our Mediterranean diet-inspired menu that is gut health-friendly and very easy to stick with long-term because it isn’t highly restrictive.

What have you learned about how people really eat from inside your business? We have been around long enough that we’ve seen nutrition trends come and go. When we first started, paleo and Whole30 were all the rage. Then there was a slight rise in demand for vegan. Now people seem to be moving away from vegan and deciding that they are happy to cut back on meat and seafood a bit, but still prefer it in most meals, especially if it’s from a sustainable source.

Plus, with the increased interest in gut health, there’s also more interest in getting enough fiber. And one thing has been consistent throughout: demand for high protein meals, which I feel glad about because it is important to get not just adequate protein every day but optimal levels. Protein is also incredibly satiating, which makes it great for weight loss.

You talk about working with a naturopathic doctor to determine your health needs. Can you talk about learning your personal needs rather than eating a diet that's trending? I learned from personal experience and have observed from feeding over 125,000 customers over 8 years that when it comes to food sensitivities, everyone is completely different, and avoiding food sensitivities can alleviate or heal auto-immune health issues and even mental health.

For example, I’m highly allergic to wheat and dairy, even when I eat the highest quality versions of these foods in places like Sardinia, Italy, one of the world’s Blue Zones. These foods trigger acne, eczema, and asthma in me.

Also, an individual’s food sensitivities can change over time as they repair their gut and overall health. When I first started testing my food sensitivities, dozens of foods triggered health issues for me, including very common everyday foods like chicken, cashews, and coconut. Now I’m down to only having sensitivities to wheat and dairy. Healing your gut takes time, but it’s worth it to be able to eat a wider variety of food. I believe everyone should eat the least restrictive diet they possibly can while still optimizing their overall health.
nutrition meals with methodologyWhat have you learned about ingredient sourcing that you wish more consumers knew? Working in the food industry helped me understand why processed, long shelf-life food is so inexpensive and also so bad for us. Two huge things shocked me about ingredient sourcing that I wish more consumers knew...

First, packaged foods don’t have to list all of the ingredients used, so there are “organic” products out there that include ingredients such as flavor maskers you will never see on an ingredient list. This is why I recommend avoiding most foods with long shelf lives because you never know what you’re truly eating. The longer the shelf-life, the more likely hidden ingredients have been used to preserve the flavor, look, smell, and texture of the food.

Second, avoid anything that lists “natural ingredients” on the label as this is where companies will lump in ingredients that would and should sound scary if they were listed on the label. Again, these are ingredients used to improve the flavor, look, smell, shelf-life, and texture of food.

Methodology is 'clinically validated'. What did you learn about meal planning or nutrition in that process that would interest readers? Going through clinical validation was eye-opening for me.

First, I never realized how difficult it is to do a nutrition study if participants aren’t being given the exact food they’re supposed to eat. People are busy, diets are hard to stick with, and life gets in the way, so the typical nutrition study can’t be very confident that people are eating what they say they’re eating, unless it was conducted somewhere like a prison or campus dining hall. This inability to feed participants in most nutrition studies makes the data from them less reliable, and this is also why the study we did with Stanford University was so great. We knew exactly what everyone was eating because they were eating Methodology.

Second, the outcome of the study was fascinating. We put the highest quality keto diet against the highest quality Mediterranean diet and learned that participants could eat whole food carbohydrates from things like fruit, whole grains, and legumes and still lose as much weight and equally improve the markers of diabetes. Plus, those on the Mediterranean diet stuck with it more consistently. I hope to see more studies like this that help people realize that we don’t need to avoid all carbs to achieve our health goals, we just need to cut back on refined carbs.

When you're not eating Methodology, what are you usually cooking at home? I cook very healthfully when I’m at home and prefer eating Asian food. My favorite very fast, go-to meal to make at home is fried cauliflower rice. I usually make it using whatever produce I have on hand, but in its most ideal form, I stirfry shiitake mushrooms, asparagus, cauliflower rice, porcini powder, onion powder, pink salt, fish sauce, egg whites, and a can of wild sardines in EVOO. Then I top it off with Thai basil, lime juice, and broccoli sprouts. It sounds a bit insane, but it tastes amazing because of how the EVOO soaks up the umami from the sardines. Plus, it’s extremely high in protein, fiber, and omega-3. This is inspired by Vietnamese salted fish fried rice, something I grew up eating. I altered the recipe to be much lower calorie, higher protein, higher fiber, and veg-packed. This is basically what we do at Methodology—take everyday household favorites and transform them into their most nourishing versions.

You want people to consider your service in lieu of Doordash or Postmates. What's the comp there roughly?  If you were to recreate a Methodology meal on DoorDash or Postmates, you’d need to order a protein main and two veggie sides or appetizers, at the minimum. Doing this would result in a meal, with all taxes and fees, that would cost at least $25-35. Plus, you wouldn’t know what ingredients were used, and it’s highly likely the protein was not sustainable (wild seafood or pastured protein) and that the meal included inflammatory oils or refined sugar.
nutrition with methodologyAny other great tips for convenient healthy meals at home when people aren't using your service? For convenient healthy meals at home when not using Methodology, I recommend learning how to assemble meals quickly using prepped vegetables, sustainable protein (wild seafood and pastured protein), and whole food carbohydrates (rice, potatoes, oats) from Trader Joe’s. There are a few basic keys to making food tasty at home. First, don’t overcook the protein. Most should be cooked using medium heat on the pan, not high heat. Also, protein continues to cook after it’s removed from the heat, which is where most amateur home chefs go wrong. Second, have fun trying different delicious spice mixes until you uncover your favorites.

Get Ready With Molly Sims + Her Journey To YSE Beauty

molly sims yse beauty

Molly Sim is the queen of girl's girl culture. As an actress, model, podcast host, author, and now beauty founder, Molly always serves us a bright, fun and relatable narrative we can't resist.

As I write this, I realize that we're featuring two former Guest Editors on the site this week, both Molly and one of our very firsts, Kris Carr. Pop over to read Kris' story after you enjoy Molly's interview below.

Molly recently launched skincare brand, YSE Beauty (pronounced “wise”) and I'm already hooked on two of her beautifully packaged and effective products: Skin Glow SPF Primer and The Problem Solver Brightening Treatment. Learn more about the new brand from Molly in her own words...

Getting Ready With Molly Sims, Founder YSE Beauty

the new Brand in a nutshell: YSE Beauty (pronounced “wise”), is a clinically-proven and dermatologist-tested line for those concerned with uneven skin texture and hyperpigmentation. It is a holy grail skincare routine that not only provides expert efficacy with radiant results, but also brings warmth and fun into clinical skincare through incredibly chic and luxe packaging. Our mission is to bring back the joy of feeling beautiful bare faced, so complexion concerns never prevent you from saying yes to those moments in life that matter most. We say get out there and put your best face forward... with a little help from us along the way.
yse beautyMy skincare journey has been... Challenging but rewarding. During the times I struggled with hyperpigmentation, melasma, and uneven skin tone... I felt alone. I felt like throwing in the towel several times because I just couldn’t get a handle on my skin. Thankfully, I persevered and after tapping into several experts and through my own trial and error, I was finally able to see a light at the end of the tunnel. The rewarding part is being able to share these findings with others by creating YSE Beauty so no one feels alone or overwhelmed. My mission was to make luscious and efficacious skincare that was approachable, simple, and something you looked forward to each day.

Favorite product in the line: Your Favorite Ex Exfoliating Pads is a leave-on exfoliant and are truly revolutionary. Exfoliating is one of (if not the most) important things you can do for your skin's' texture to create a more even base. Our 3 inch pads are designed to be gentle enough to use every day and give you the dreamiest results with no downtime. Using glycolic acid, PHAs and ectoin to re-texturize, your skin is only a swipe away from feeling refreshed and radiant.molly sims

Lately, my beauty look could be described as: The “undone but done” beauty look. Basically, your face, but slightly enhanced and effortless with minimal makeup. This has been my go-to look as of late. It gives that “model off duty” vibe. I recently got back into curling my eyelashes which allows me to wear less mascara and still give me that wide awake look.

Pro tip: A great little trick is adding a light dab of Aquaphor to your lashes for a dewy finish. Surprisingly, I thought my days of lip liner were over, but I am back on the trend. It just helps give a fuller look to your lips without having to get injections or overdo it on the lipstick. My best little secret for the perfect “undone but done” look is using the YSE Beauty Skin Glow SPF 30 Primer, let it set for a minute, and then add the Makeup by Mario Soft Sculpt Transforming Skin Enhancer in Medium for a bit of contouring. Add a hint of a blush stain on your cheeks and lips and it’s the perfect effortless glow.

How many years we've been working on YSE before launch: YSE Beauty has been a labor of love for 3 years before we launched it to the world. Sleepless nights, countless formula testing, decision making after decision making.... It has been a roller coaster of highs and lows. However, it has all been worth it seeing the incredible response from our community and hearing how YSE Beauty is helping women become wiser with their skincare journey.

Regular practitioners I swear by: Georgia Louise is literally the best for lifting, sculpting, and de-puffing. I feel rejuvenated after every single facial I have with her. I also die for Catherine Esposito. She is my go-to esthetician and I have used her countless times before walking the red carpet. She always makes my skin prepped and ready for a long night of makeup wearing.
molly sims yse CLEANSERTreatment I'm dying to try soon: Dr. Diamond’s HydraFacial which is best known for delivering dewy, plump, and hydrated skin. Currently adding to my list!

Skincare trend I'm ready to be over: Slugging. I thought it was genius at first and then once I started trying it for myself, I realized I didn’t like how heavy the products felt lathered on my face. It was too much. A simple and efficacious routine is all I need.

My morning skincare routine: First thing I reach for is the YSE Beauty Take It Off Gel-Oil Cleanser and a gua sha. I use the cleanser and gua sha in tandem to really get the circulation going in my skin. It’s my trick to instantly look snatched. Read Next: How To Give Yourself The Ultimate Gua Sha Facial At Home

Next, I’ll grab the Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels out of my fridge (the best for extra cooling!) that way I feel completely de-puffed before starting my makeup. Then I’ll apply YSE Beauty Morning Cocktail Vitamin C Serum because this is the golden ticket to brightening your skin, people!

Lastly, I will dab on a bit of the YSE Beauty Xtremely Rich Moisturizer for extra hydration and then end with my Shiseido Eyelash Curler to fake a full 8 hours of sleep look. And then voila! I am ready to start my makeup.

Other clean beauty products I'm swooning for lately: I am obsessed with the Monika Blunder Liquid Flush Cheek Tint in the shade Munchen. It’s the most beautiful color and also the dreamiest liquid cream blush that gives the best flushed finish on my cheeks.

Wellness practices that makes the biggest difference in my skin: I always notice a difference when I routinely dry brush. Dry brushing is exceptional for your skin because it increases blood circulation and promotes lymphatic drainage. It’s a once-a-day body massage with so many proven benefits. I love it. Also, I have to say I am a big fan of micro-needling. It’s the best for getting that extra boost of collagen into the skin. Lastly, I also just tried dermaplaning for the first time and I am looking forward to seeing how that changes my skin! I will have to report back!

I’m Not a Mourning Person: Kris Carr On What Not To Say To A Grieving Friend

kris carr on grief

Kris Carr is a multiple New York Times best-selling author, wellness activist and cancer thriver. She’s been called a “force of nature” by O Magazine and was named a “new role model” by the New York Times. Kris is also a member of Oprah’s SuperSoul 100, recognizing the most influential thought-leaders today. Her new memoir, I’m Not a Mourning Person: Braving Loss, Grief, and the Big Messy Emotions That Happen When Life Falls Apart is her most poignant exploration of the human condition yet. In it, Kris tackles the universal experience of loss with her signature combo of searing vulnerability and irreverent humor.

In this excerpt, she addresses the conversations had with loved ones or friends after they've suffered a loss, offers perspective on how to approach them, and provides tips on what to say—and what not to say.

I Know You Mean Well, But...

Don’t be surprised if people do or say weird, totally confounding things when your world falls apart. These well-meaning folks are often referred to as “grief illiterate.” This doesn’t mean they’re jerks; it just means that they’re inexperienced in handling the big emotions that accompany life’s scary moments. None of us were taught how to survive storms of this magnitude. You likely didn’t know how to, either, before this sad, bad, mad, exhausting thing happened, and then it was trial by cancer, divorce, death, or some other flavor of crisis. We’re all doing the best we can, forgive yourself (and others) for past missteps. Here are a few ways to feel a little more prepared, a little less awkward, and a lot more compassionate along the way.

What NOT to say when someone is grieving...

“You’re young; you’ll have another baby…” (I want this baby!)

“He’s in a better place now…” (A better place is with me!)

“There are other fish in the sea…” (I don’t want fish. I want my person.)

“It was only a dog; why are you so sad?” (Because my dog is my child to me.)

“Aren’t you over it yet? It’s been months, years, decades…” (I’m sorry I’m not as bounce back–y as you. There’s no over; there’s only through.)

“At least she lived a long life…” (There is no such thing as “at least” in grief.)

“There’s a reason for everything…” (Excuse me while I vomit in my mouth.)

Scanning this list, you can see how attempts to connect with someone in their grief can unintentionally create more distance between you. Instead, I’ve found courageous acknowledgment from the people around me, meaning addressing the elephant in the room, to be most helpful. Be willing to talk about what happened. Can this be uncomfortable? Heck yes! Do it anyway. What you say—or don’t say—carries a lot of weight. How you show up for those you love in times of need can strengthen your relationship or damage it.

What TO say when someone is grieving...

“I am so sorry you’re going through this.”

“I’m not sure what to say, but I’m here to listen.”

“I don’t know how you feel, but I’m here to help in any way I can.”

“I’m with you, and I love you.”

“I’ll bet you could use some help right now. How about I [fill in the blank—run errands, get you groceries, walk the dog]?”

Here are a few helpful ways to show up for someone who’s grieving:

+ Validate their feelings: Don’t change the subject because you’re sweating. Stay in the muck. Share good memories, especially ones they may not even know about. If you didn’t know the person (or pet), you can say something like, “Though I didn’t know him, I can only imagine how wonderful he was because you are so wonderful.”

+ Check in: Send a text or leave a message letting them know you’re thinking of them but that they don’t need to respond. And don’t take it personally if they don’t. Take cues from them. If they don’t want to talk, don’t push. If they drop off the map, go find them. I have a tendency to isolate myself like a sick animal when my pain hits a tipping point (thanks, trauma). My closest true-blue Marie always catches the scent when I’m up to shenanigans like this. “Hey, just send me a smoke signal and let me know you’re okay.”

+ Proactively offer specific support: Bring the lasagna, watch the kids, run errands, help with funeral arrangements—OMG, please help with those... that stuff is so hard). And don’t just offer to help the week the loss happens. If you can, keep going, or at least keep checking in. Once the funerals, and celebrations of life are over, everyone else goes back to normal. But there is no normal for those left behind. Continuing to acknowledge the milestone dates (death anniversaries, birthdays, graduations) is the very definition of kindness.

+ Share and research resources: Include the specific phone numbers and contact information (therapists, counselors, bodyworkers, or if you’re my crew, psychic mediums on speed dial).

+ Give advice when appropriate and invited, but don’t meddle or judge: Huh? But how am I supposed to know the difference? I get it. I’m a fountain of feedback, so this tip is really just for me (wink, wink). Butting in on other people’s business, when your participation isn’t wanted, rarely feels good to them. Sometimes it can come off as shaming, corrective, or even patronizing. Other times it might feel like you can’t slow down enough to tune in to the person you’re trying to help. Instead, you might say something like, “Do you want advice right now, or do you want to brainstorm, or do you just want to get it off your chest?” Asking permission never hurts. Remember, pain needs to be witnessed, not polished.

In the end, there are no magic words that can take the pain away from those who are grieving or flailing in crisis. And it’s not our job to do so—I can’t emphasize this enough. It’s not your job to make it better. It’s your job to listen, to hug them and hold space for whatever feelings need to be expressed. When in doubt, let love lead the way. Love always knows what to do.
