Raise A Glass: A Rosemary Rosé Sangria For Thanksgiving

We're grateful that the holidays are finally here. We hope you've enjoyed pulling a few of your favorite healthful Thanksgiving recipes from this month's stories, whether Chef Citrin's roasted sprouts or Eyeswoon's baked delicata squash. For one last bite of inspiration, check out Kitchen Mouse's Thanksgiving luncheon menu here for a few gluten-free, vegan dishes delicious enough for any mix of guests you host this week! At last week's lunch with Kitchen Mouse, throw by pals and creative gals, Jenni Kayne and Kimberly Muller, guests enjoyed this refreshing cocktail made by Kimberly herself. This Thanksgaria is light enough to match the giant spread, but rich with harvest season flavors. We love Kimberly's charming use of persimmons both on the table and in the cocktails, plus the use of sparkling cider to bring the whole concoction right into that sweet spot of fall and holiday memories. You can easily throw this cocktail together for guests on Thursday or save this recipe for a holiday open house - cheers!

Holiday Smoothie Solutions: Cranberry Almond ‘Leftovers’ Smoothie

Cranberry season is here. While there are plenty of Thanksgiving recipes that call for the tart berry, we have a healthy cranberry smoothie recipe you can use to make the best of those leftover berries that doesn't involve more carbs or gravy... The Problem: Sometimes overzealous food shoppers can pick up too much of certain seasonal foods in anticipation of large Thanksgiving portions. All that extra food leads to all that extra eating! How can we avoid letting that extra goodness go to waste without stuffing yourselves for days? The Solution: Use those extra berries in this superfruit smoothie. Cranberries are known to help promote urinary tract health and are chock-full of antioxidants. They're also filled with fiber and vitamin C. We've added goji berries which are high in vitamin A, chia seeds to help boost fiber levels and supply omega-3s and spirulina powder for a quick punch of greens. The spirulina helps with everything from toxin removal to certain types of allergies; it's also extremely calcium rich. Apples help promote digestive health, which is important in the wake of a food-heavy holiday like Thanksgiving. Whip this smoothie up the morning before hitting Black Friday sales and you'll be on your way toward a healthier holiday season!

Um, maybe - but even if you're scrambling at the eleventh hour to make sure everyone has their traditional must-haves, this super-simple DIY from Kitchen Mouse will be the crowning glory of your holiday entertaining success. Last week we joined Jenni Kayne and her dear friend Kimberly Muller for a cozy afternoon gathering with homegrown vegan caterers, Kitchen Mouse, for an afternoon of traditional November foods, gorgeous flowers by the host herself and this sweet and useful DIY. Kitchen Mouse's claim to fame is a flair for remaking classic foods in fine, vegan, gluten and sugar-free form - a major food feat to be sure. Check out Kitchen Mouse's delicious twists on a few Thanksgiving classics here or simply follow their instructions for this simple as can be take-away gift. Jenni, Kimberly and Kitchen Mouse packaged these beauty salves up in small glass jars capped in silk, decorated with fresh wax flowers and labelled with a custom note for each guest.

Chef Josiah Citrin’s Pear And Blue Cheese Tart

Chef Citrin's final Thanksgiving recipe from our organic produce box is, naturally, a dessert. But not just any dessert, clearly. In true Michelin-starred style, what Citrin whipped up from Summerland's fresh local pears is a dessert that will surprise and delight your dinner guests and have even you impressed with yourself in the kitchen. Although we love a good old-fashioned apple pie, these tarts feel like a modern, foodie-friendly twist on the holiday staple. Pears stand in for apples and the strong blue cheese takes the whole thing to another level. Here is the recipe with notes from the chef... This tart is an amazing dessert that I first had at Alain Passard’s L’Arpege. That first bite will blow your mind and leave you wanting more, which is what really great food is all about.

Mangosteen, Mint And Rose: 8 Essential Oils To Heal Your Skin

It doesn't take much to convince us to apply a drizzle of rose, neroli or geranium oil onto our skin. Essential oils from fruits and flowers are so intoxicatingly delicious-smelling that we can barely keep from drinking the stuff, let alone slathering it on our skin. Luckily, Mother Nature designed these oils to attract with good reason: natural essential oils have incredible healing and soothing properties that, when properly utilized, can transform skin. Annie Tevelin of brand new skincare line, SkinOwl, had her own deeply healing skin experience with essential oils and was so impressed that she studied the oils and started up her own line. We asked Annie to break down the best uses for a few of these oils for certain skin types and conditions. Find the oil that suits your skin and find a way to work the scented stuff into your skincare regimen! Here's Annie... I have always loved the way essential oils feel on my skin. Essential oils melt into my skin, versus conventional lotions and creams, which can sit on the surface. While studying cosmetic chemistry, I learned that the molecules in essential oils are much smaller than that of most skin creams, meaning they're able to penetrate each pore more deeply. The deeper oils sink, the more they work. As counterintuitive as it may seem to use oils on the skin, especially when skin is troubled or in need of healing, they are actually deeply effective from the inside out to heal and nurture the skin in ways I've never seen from any other individual ingredient. I'm proud to have created a product that works on the most stubborn of skin concerns. Here are a few of the oils I love most to treat skin conditions of all kinds.

Josiah Citrin’s Harvest Salad And A Thanksgiving Giveaway

Having a salad on the Thanksgiving table doesn't have to be an afterthought. There are so many delicious seasonal salad options for such a cozy fall meal and this one from Chef Citrin allows you to work in many of the fall holiday ingredients we love most. Citrin designed this recipe to include as many harvest veggies as he could - perfect for small families that want to celebrate all the traditional Thanksgiving foods without making too many dishes. Chef Josiah Citrin’s Roasted Brussels Sprouts

As Chef citrin mentions in his note below, a decade or so ago, the dreaded brussels sprout was once the veggie we all 'loved to hate'. Now, nothing could be further from the truth. Whether it was seeing the veg on it's native jingle bell-like stalk at the farmer's market, learning of their high nutritional value or just eating them in sensational recipes like the one below from a two Michelin-starred chef, the tide has turned and now we see these tiny little globes full of cooler-weather flavor everywhere and crave them all winter long. This was probably our favorite recipe from our day cooking with one of LA's most acclaimed chefs. Full of sweet and sour flavors to counter the slightly bitter sprouts, this recipe will steal the show from anything else you put on the Thanksgiving table! Chef Citrin chopped these sprouts straight from the farmer's market stalk - which is how we recommend buying them, both for ultimate freshness and to get kids really excited about cooking veggies. In Summerland Produce's giant Thanksgiving Box, you'll receive all the organic veggies you'll need to make these sprouts, Citrin's Blue Lake beans, a harvest salad, and divine dessert we'll be sharing before the holiday is here! The Thanksgiving Box is delivered to your doorstep and saves you one massive farmer's market haul. A note from the chef: This roasted Brussels sprouts recipe is a play on Chinese string beans. You get the sweet, fermented flavor offset by the coolness of garlic and mint, and the acidity of lemon, working with the vegetable that everyone used to love to hate. Brussels Sprouts are now very popular and this recipe will prove why.

Superfood Spotlight: Cardamom

What you need to know: Familiar with that sweet, yet savory flavor found in your morning chai? Well, most likely, that's cardamom you're tasting. Cardamom is an exotic spice commonly used in Indian cuisine, but also found in adventurous concoctions such as orange cardamom ice cream or these Persian rose tea cookies. Offering much more than a distinct flavor profile, cardamom is widely used for a multitude of ailments including indigestion, mouth ulcers, and even bad breath. Why you should try it: A favorite in ayurvedic medicine, cardamom is the perfect spice for cold and flu season. Cardamom is one of the richest sources of the phytochemical cineole, which is the secret to its health benefits. Cineole is a potent antiseptic, meaning it acts as an antimicrobial in the body. It can be used to fight off sore throats while breaking up chest congestion, making it a remedy for bronchitis, laryngitis and any type of upper-respiratory infection. Let's get together: Quite honestly, you can add cardamom to almost any beverage, baked good or dish, but if you want to get right down to the point, try chewing on the seeds. In India, it is a common practice to pop one in the mouth after a meal to improve digestion and to ward off infection...can you say organic chewing gum? Not a fan of cardamom au naturel? Try our newest seasonal flavor, Spiced Almond, instead, which also contains blood-sugar-stabilizing cinnamon and brain-stimulating nutmeg.

Smoothie Solution: Banana Almond Stomach-Soothing Smoothie

The holidays are upon us! With holiday gatherings come holiday snacks, meals, drinks and more. It's easy to overdo it. This banana-based smoothie is a good primer to prevent overindulgence or can help quiet upset stomachs after the fact. THE PROBLEM: Holiday meals may often seem like competitive eating. Stress brought on by travel, logistics, clashing personalities or a variety of other variables can have you reaching for that second piece of pie or third glass of wine. If you arrive hungry, it's especially easy to overindulge without realizing. THE SOLUTION: Having a smoothie on your way to holiday events helps ensure you don't arrive hungry and prevents mindless snacking. If you do overindulge, this smoothie uses bananas, a binding agent known to promote mucous lining of the stomach, and tea to help soothe upset tummies.
