According to a Chinese legend, silk was discovered by an empress who was sipping her tea under a mulberry tree when a cocoon fell into her cup. The cocoon began to unravel itself and the empress admired the beauty of the shimmering threads. As the legend goes, the young royal invented the reel and loom and began to teach the ladies of her court how to weave silk fabric. This truly natural material has been a sign of luxury ever since -- and is now more accessible than ever, appearing in every form from pajamas to pillowcases.
The beautiful, natural material feels amazing to wear, it's biodegradable, non-toxic and even has anti-bacterial properties. While silk is not a good choice for vegans, for others, silk can be a very ethical, sustainable fabric, due to the fairly low impact of the silk-creation and production process. When done well, silk manufacturing can be a harmonious and low waste process.
Silk is spun from the long threads which make up the inner cocoon of a silkworm. These little critters keep a raw, gluten-free, dairy-free diet which consists entirely of mulberry leaves - the product of a hardy tree that is resistant to pollution and easy to cultivate. The tree bark has medicinal properties and the fruit can be used as a natural dye or to fill a pie. The leaves of the mulberry will feed the worms and the worms, in turn, can feed the farmers.
