Meet the Aussie Beauties Behind Dr. Roebuck’s Skincare

When you live your life drenched in the surf, beauty solutions require simplicity. When you live your life drenched in the sun, beauty solutions require maximum effectiveness. Sisters, Kim and Zoe, grew up with both in Bondi Beach, the trendy, health-conscious and idyllic suburb of Sydney, Australia. In Bondi, natural beauty is revered and self-care is simply part of the culture. Dr Roebuck's clean skincare products were born with that ethos in mind.

Bouncing from the ocean to the sand and back from morning to night brings inevitable skincare challenges; dryness, sensitivity, and textural issues. Kim and Zoe's parents, who are both doctors, taught their daughters to create their own skincare products -- not by loading up with unnecessary ingredients, but by streamlining the list as much as possible. After 30 years of trial and error, scientific testing (and a little wicked packaging design) the sisters have nailed the ultimate Aussie skincare line.

Dr. Roebuck skincareWhile we get a thrill from mixing and matching our fave skincare products, there's something really special, and uniquely freeing, about having a 'skincare uniform' from a single brand whose practices we trust. Check out their obsession-worthy range of masks, moisturizers, cleansers and serums - the MVP? Their hyaluronic-based daily hydrator, No Worries. Everything from Dr Roebuck's is chemical and cruelty-free, eco-friendly and sustainably sourced.

We asked Kim and Zoe to give us a glimpse into their life in Bondi Beach and LA, balancing beauty and business in some of the most beautiful places on earth...

Where we live:

Zoe: Bondi Beach, Australia

Kim: Los Angeles, California

daily beauty product I never go without:

Kim: No Worries Hydrating Face Moisturizer

Zoe: Down Under Collagen Boosting Eye Treatment

Product that gets the most feedback from brand devotees:

Definitely our No Worries Hydrating Face Moisturizer. It's the perfect everyday moisturizer that anyone can use day or night. It's not too heavy, but it's super hydrating and plays well with anything else you have in your regimen.

Favorite place to cozy up with juice or coffee in Bondi:

We love La Piadina for morning coffee — it is the best in town — and Cali Press on Hall Street for juices post-workout.

most popular food trend in Bondi right now is...

The newest thing are Tonic Bars — they are popping up everywhere. They are a one-stop shop for immunity and wellness shots. The best part is that many of them are including Australian extracts in their mixes making them super unique to the location.

THe Bondi uniform is...

Functional, effortless and casual — cool enough to go have dinner and drinks, but also easy enough that you could go for a run if you wanted to. It’s important that everything we do (including our skincare) is multi-functional. We like global brands like Nimble, Lucas Hugh and Spiritual Gangster, but with a little linen thrown in from Jack and Jac.

Scrub or mask?

Both! Our Byron 2-In-1 Mask + Scrub is really the best of both worlds. It's very gentle, but does a great job exfoliating the skin and unclogging pores. We both use it every day!

For beauty, my favorite thing to eat is...

Kim: Bone broth and my daily green juice.

Zoe: I love The Beauty Chef supplements — I add their powder to my morning smoothies.

ingredient most exciting to me now is...

Kim: Macadamia Oil. It is in several of our products because of all of its benefits. It’s the closest match to the naturally-occurring sebum of the skin. The oil is hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic and is highly emollient yet lightweight, so it penetrates all layers of the dermis. It contains squalane and oleic acid which helps with cell regeneration, as well as palmitoleic acid, which aids in the healing of wounds, scratches and burns. It is really an all-in-one oil.

Zoe: Turmeric. It has amazing anti-inflammatory, healing and overall health benefits and can be used arguably every day. Your skin is the most absorbent organ of the body, so if you apply turmeric topically you are still going to absorb it into the bloodstream and enjoy those potentially anti-inflammatory benefits within your body. Our Tama Healing Mask is packed with it!

What I wish more women understood about skincare:

Kim: Less is more! You don’t need to use tons of things to have healthy skin. By simplifying you are giving your skin the things it needs and nothing it doesn’t.

Zoe: It's important to age gracefully and naturally — we’re not scared of wrinkles, but we like to keep our skin and body as healthy as possible. This speaks to our overall wellness philosophy: It’s not just about what you apply to the skin, but what you put in your body as well.

Favorite outdoor workout in Bondi:

Kim: A beach run and swim — one of the most famous Aussie beach walks is Bondi to Bronte, and it is not only stunning but equally challenging. You get to bask in the beauty of the beaches, but it will challenge you and get your heart rate up to a beneficial level. This circulates blood flow to all extremities, including your face, which results in a dewy post-exercise glow. After your run, jump into the sea to refresh your mind, body, soul and skin. Simple, but powerful.

tell us about layering products. What's the best combo?

We love to layer products like masks and serums because it gives you the ability to customize the skincare that your skin needs from day to day. It is important to make sure you are layering from lightest to heaviest, so you can get the full effect of all of your products.

Our favorite serum combo is Perky Collagen Boosting Serum and True Blue Ultimate Hydrating Serum for a daily skin boost and perk with some major hydration for a beautiful glowing look. Our favorite mask combo is Tama Healing Mask and Icebergs Hydrating Mask — but if you really want to indulge your skin in something amazing add Daintree Brightening Mask with Tama and Icebergs.

Why clean/nontoxic skincare matters:

Zoe: It's important to research and follow the product supply from origin, extraction and refinement of every single one of the ingredients to ensure it is from a sustainable and ethical source.

Kim: We take an eco-friendly and sustainable approach to everyday living to not only minimize exposure to harmful chemicals and toxins but also to limit our carbon footprint.

Zoe: Your skin is the most absorbent organ in the body. I come from a pharmaceutical and clinical background, where I was working on administering medication with skin patches and seeing the efficacy of this. This drove our philosophy and vision — that the correct clean ingredients can provide amazing results. It also made us realize how important it is that everything is clean because it will all end up in your bloodstream.
