Endometriosis is a painful condition that's more common than you may think -- it affects millions of women, many of whom feel forced to spend quite a bit of time and money managing their often mysterious symptoms. While there isn't a cure we know of, there are powerful natural (and not often talked about) tools to nourish the body healing from endometriosis, bringing it closer to the healing equilibrium needed.
Last week we ran a comprehensive nutrition and lifestyle guide for managing endometriosis by holistic nutritionist, Kristin Dahl. Below you'll find part two of this guide, outlining the supplements and herbs Dahl recommends to clients who are healing from endometriosis...Supportive SupplementsThe following supplements are especially beneficial in the treatment of endometriosis. They can be taken in supplemental form, although a focus should also be placed on including plenty of natural food sources of each nutrient into your daily diet. Nutrients are best absorbed and used by our bodies when they’re in their most natural, bioavailable forms -- but when we're facing deficiency, the right supplementation can have a major impact.
I-3-C (Indole 3 Carbinol) | This provides a concentrated form of phytonutrient found in brassica vegetables which promotes healthy estrogen levels through detoxification. Recommended dosage 200 mg 3 x per day. Check Out
Calcium d-glucarate | supports liver function and thereby support the detoxification of excess estrogens and other toxins. The recommended dose is 500 - 1,000 mg per day. Check Out
Vitamin B Complex | Try a B-complex supplement rather than supplementing with any of the B vitamins individually. It promotes blood cell productivity and proper hormone balance, relieves stress, is needed for proper adrenal function, and aids the body in removing excess fluids. Food sources: Atlantic mackerel, wild-caught salmon, nutritional yeast, sardines, eggs, lentils, split peas, black beans, spinach, mushrooms, pine nuts, and sunflower seeds. Check Out
Vitamin K | Dosage: 200 mcg daily (often combined with a vitamin D3 supplement). It's needed for normal blood clotting. Food sources: Green leafy vegetables (kale, spinach, turnip greens, collards, Swiss chard, mustard greens, parsley, romaine, and green leaf lettuce), cruciferous vegetables (Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage), natto, spring onions, prunes, cucumbers, and dried basil. Check Out
Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) | Dosage: 1,500 mg daily. This provides essential fatty acids such as gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) that aid in regulating hormonal and prostaglandin balance. Food sources: Flax seeds, hemp seeds, walnuts, almonds, dark leafy green vegetables, extra virgin olive oil, Atlantic mackerel, wild-caught salmon, cod liver oil, chia seeds, white fish, sardines, and anchovies. Check Out
Zinc | Dosage: 50 mg daily (make sure you do not exceed 100 mg total daily from all supplements). This is needed for tissue repair and immune function. Food sources: Oysters, lamb, pumpkin seeds, chickpeas, cacao powder, mushrooms, and chicken. Check Out
Progesterone cream | Estrogen must be balanced with progesterone to avoid estrogen dominance. One of the ways to reduce estrogen dominance, which is often associated with Endometriosis, is to increase your progesterone levels. Using natural progesterone cream can bring the estrogen: progesterone ratio back in balance and help to reduce and in some cases eliminate symptoms of Endometriosis. It is best to speak with your holistic healthcare practitioner about using progesterone and check hormone levels to find out if this is a good option for you and your body.
Incorporate Healing HerbsHerbal remedies are incredibly beneficial to the body. The herbs listed below are beneficial for endometriosis, and can be taken as herbal infusions. Buy loose leaf and make infusions by using 3-4 tbsp in a quart mason jar. Cover with hot water and a lid, then let sit overnight. Drink 2-3 cups of the herbal infusions daily, in the morning and throughout the day.
Burdock + Dandelion Root | Helps to balance hormones, cleanse the liver and improve digestion. How to use: Make a herbal infusion. TCM Editor's Note: Learn how to make an herbal infusion here.
Milk Thistle | Helps optimize liver function and clear excess hormones. Optimizing your liver function throughout your cycle will be beneficial to assist in detoxifying your body. Milk thistle is best taken in capsule or tincture form. Check Out
Chastetree Berry (Vitex) | Supports increased production of progesterone and helps to regulate progesterone /estrogen balance. How to use: 2.5ml once per day in the A.M; may see results after 3 menstrual cycles. Check Out
Red Raspberry Leaf | Excellent for balancing hormones and ultimately keeping estrogen at a healthy level. Make a herbal infusion, as above. Red raspberry leaf infusions are especially beneficial taken daily one week prior to menses.
