Detox Your Nightstand: 3 Non-Toxic Products For The Bedroom

To each their own. Whatever happens after, say eating a few of these libido-supercharging chocolates, is your own business. But might we suggest one bedroom specific activity this February? Detox your nightstand and stock up on non-toxic lube and other essentials! There are few areas of personal care more intimate - and that's where non-toxic products matter most. Dive into all the facts below from MADE SAFE founder (and our clean living lifeboat), Amy Ziff...

What Are Petrochemicals? Petrochemicals are chemicals derived from petroleum. It must be noted, not all petrochemicals are linked to human-health harm; however, two common ingredients in lube - propylene glycol and synthetic glycerin - are petroleum-derived chemicals of concern. When using something on your skin or in your body, you want it to be biocompatible (which means it works with your natural systems rather than disrupting them) and harmless to humans.

What’s the Concern? Propylene glycol and synthetic glycerin can be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a class of chemicals linked to cancer. In addition, these two petrochemicals can contribute to damaging rectal, vaginal and cervical tissue, according to the World Health Organization. The other problem with petrochemicals in lubes is they can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the vagina and lead to bacterial vaginosis (BV). Studies show 60% of women who have BV are more likely to contract a sexually transmitted infection.

Avoid Them: Read labels to avoid propylene, propylene glycol and synthetic glycerin. Learn more about harmful chemicals in sexual-health products at MADE SAFE.
