7 Ways To Master Your PMS Emotions with Nutrition

Lacey Dunn, MS, RD, LD, CPT specializes in all things hormones, thyroid, gut, and metabolism and incorporates on-going education into her daily life. Her new book, The Women’s Guide to Hormonal Harmony: How to Rebalance Your Hormones, Master Your Metabolism, and Become the Boss of Your Own Body is a useful guide for anyone looking to better understand their hormonal health.

If you find yourself with an abundance of physical and emotional distress the week before your period, you’re not alone. Around 75% of women experience at least one symptom of PMS (premenstrual syndrome). Anxiety, sadness, heightened depression, irritability, enhanced cravings, and even anger are common emotional symptoms that women feel prior to “shark week”.

However, just because PMS is common does not mean that’s normal. It’s time for women to reject the notion that PMS is just the curse of womanhood! Terrible PMS, including large fluctuations in your mood, is a sign that something in your body needs to be addressed. It’s a fire alarm going off in your body, indicating that something in your life needs a little TLC.

During your menstrual cycle, there are natural fluctuations of estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen and progesterone fall after ovulation and before the start of a period. Premenstrual Syndrome (aka PMS) occurs when the body is not able to adapt to these fluctuations or if there is a hormonal imbalance. With a root-cause approach to reducing PMS, you must ask why this is happening.

7 Ways To Master Your PMS Emotions with Nutrition

There are ways that you can conquer your PMS emotions simply by addressing what you eat! Yes, you don’t need a pill to help yourself stabilize your mood around your period. The top ways to be the boss of your emotions around your period by controlling your diet include:

Get your fiber in! This will help naturally detoxify estrogen (lessening the risk of estrogen dominance which will heighten your PMS emotions), aid in natural liver detoxification, and help to support a healthy gut microbiome. You need a healthy microbiome for optimal metabolism, mood, and immune function. There really isn’t anything your gut can’t impact. In fact, 90% of your serotonin, your calming neurotransmitter, is made in your gut! Feeding your body with fiber will help to feed your happy hormones.

Great sources of fiber include: whole grains, nuts, seeds, fruits, and various vegetables such as carrots, asparagus, beets, broccoli, and leafy greens.

Avoid inflammatory foods like vegetable oils, added sugars, alcohol, and processed foods. These foods can cause inflammation in your body that contributes to mood disturbances, as well as pains, aches, and cramps! High amounts of alcohol also can cause you to have a strained liver, which causes impairment in natural liver detoxification and increases your risk of estrogen dominance and nutrient deficiencies.

Balance your blood sugar levels and don’t skip meals. Skipping meals and having blood sugar dysregulation can cause you to have increased anxiety and irritability, and “hanger”. Be mindful of your carbohydrate sources and trend towards whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Don’t just grab any carb though. Pairing your carbs with a fat or protein will help to stabilize your blood sugar, and in turn, stabilize your mood!

Eat a nutrient dense diet with lots of colorful fruits and veggies. Fruits and vegetables are filled with antioxidants and polyphenols which will help to lower inflammation that can worsen PMS, as well as reduce your risk of nutrient deficiencies involved in mood disturbances. To get your bang for your buck, power up the cruciferous vegetables that can help detoxify excess estrogen!

Eat enough fat Don’t forget to consume enough cholesterol and fat. No, fat does not make you fat! Progesterone is made from cholesterol and fat, and too little progesterone will cause an estrogen dominance, leaving you mood, anxiety ridden, and prone to the devil of PMS. Aim to get enough healthy fats through diet and healthy sources of cholesterol. Foods rich in quality fats to focus on include salmon, egg yolks, avocado, nuts, olive oil, sardines, organic dairy, coconut, and grass-fed beef.

Don’t skip out on your carbohydrates. Carbohydrates help to increase your levels of serotonin, which is your calming, happy neurotransmitter. Consuming healthy carbohydrates while focusing on balancing your blood sugar can help to boost your mood, keep you full, and improve your energy levels. They can also help ward off cravings! Healthy carbohydrates to focus on include whole grains such as oatmeal, brown rice, whole wheat breads, corn tortillas, sweet potatoes, and any fruit!

If on birth control, replete the nutrients that hormonal birth control can deplete. Nutrient depletions can worsen PMS symptoms and create mood imbalance. The following are important nutrients involved in hormone health, PMS, and can be depleted by hormonal birth control:

Vitamin B6: fish, poultry, whole grains, eggs, soy beans, milk
Magnesium: nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, cacao, dark leafy greens, dark chocolate
Folate: leafy greens, nuts, beans, citrus fruit, cruciferous vegetables
Zinc: red meat, poultry, chickpeas, lentils, hemp seeds, nuts, dairy, whole grains

By powering up your nutrition, you can take hold of PMS and it’s delirious effects on your emotions. Instead of letting it control you, you can be the boss of your own body, and mind!

How to Wisely + Lovingly Lose The Weight You Gained In Quarantine

Before you get too upset with us for talking about weight loss -- something we literally never do -- hear us out.

There's a lot of chatter behind-the-scenes here about whether or not we should talk about 'weight loss' at all. Our stance, thus far, has always been to leave it alone.

As a female-focused site, we are intimately aware with the unnatural pressures most women face to maintain an ideal -- or even under-weight -- profile. Those cultural standards are rapidly changing, thanks to a body-positive movement we consider ourselves active participants in.

All that said, balance is everything. Scientifically speaking, a healthy weight is still an undeniably crucial part of every body's health.

As 2020 was a year in which most of us moved less, stressed more, and ate (and even drank) our feelings in a way we thought we'd overcome ages ago, how to lose quarantine weight has become a very relevant and health-forward topic for many of us.

We've chosen to address the weight loss topic with a gut health pro we've trusted for eons, Donna Gate of Body Ecology. Below, Donna addresses responsible ways to lose weight -- please note that none of them include radical calorie restriction or overwork, and all of them can be done in a deeply nurturing way that maintains our sense of self-love....

Gut Health Expert Donna Gates On How To Lose Quarantine Weight

2020 certainly brought unique challenges upon us all. Challenges that may have led to stress, anxiety, depression, and possibly weight gain. Now, on the other side of the coin, making a few lifestyle and dietary adjustments may significantly change how your body metabolizes fat and regains balance.

What are the normal weight loss suggestions you’re used to hearing? Eat less?  Exercise more? While these guidelines follow general principles for managing weight and maintaining a strong body, they do not address food quality or deeper biochemical signals that may prompt the body to store fat. They also don’t help you eliminate foods that trigger weight gain from your diet or eat foods that are full of good bacteria for gut health so you can lose weight naturally.

Here's why this topic matters so much: the tendency to carry additional weight has been linked to a number of factors, including toxins in the body which are difficult to avoid or eliminate. Other toxins, such as dietary toxins, are far easier to reduce or completely eliminate. These toxins are foods that cause oxidative stress on the body and promote an inflammatory response. Several studies tie both to promoting weight gain. (1)(2)

Let’s start to peel back the onion, shall we?

7 Ways to Lose Weight Healthfully + Responsibly

1. Cut out refined sugar, and use a good replacement. You’ve heard it a million times. Just eliminate the refined sugar. Fructose goes directly to the liver for processing, where it’s converted into fat. If you don’t have candidiasis, certain low glycemic fruits (green apples, blackberries, cranberries, lemons, limes) are ok in moderation.

As an alternative, Reb A Stevia has been one of my go-to sugar alternatives ever since I brought it to the US years ago! Stevia is a natural sweetener that does not prompt your body to store fat, like fructose does. It can help tremendously with sugar cravings, won’t affect weight, has a regulating effect on pancreas and could help stabilize blood sugar levels. It also does not contribute to insulin resistance or promote pathogenic bacteria and fungal overgrowth. Stevia is 300 times sweeter than sugar, so a little goes a long way.  I also prefer a high quality liquid concentrate, made from the white powder.

And, as I say, everything has a front and a back to it. Some people are apprehensive about using it, thinking Stevia is linked to hormonal imbalances. If you were to consume a ton of it daily, for years, then, as with anything, it may have a negative effect on the body.

2. reduce your omega 6 intake. Even some organic and raw food companies will include refined and processed oils, like corn, soy, sunflower, and safflower oil. These oils are overburdening our systems with too much omega 6 fatty acids. They can often be rancid and cause oxidative stress and inflammation.

Just one of several studies implies your kids, grandchildren, and great grandchildren may be predisposed to obesity and diabetes if you eat a diet heavy in refined omega 6 oils.(3)

To create a good balance of Omegas (more Omega 3s than Omega 6s), add in fermented green powders that contain antioxidants, alleviate oxidative stress and help to neutralize toxins. These also contain healthy omega 3 oils that are found abundantly in microalgae, and are easily digestible and supply your body with healthy gut bacteria.

3.  Promote the growth of good bacteria with fermented foods. The amount of research recently done on the microbes populating our intestinal tract is overwhelming. However, when you realize that for every one human cell in the body, there are 100 bacteria, it becomes quickly evident how much an impact they make.

Several studies have shown that different microbes in the gut will actually help weight loss.

Gut flora will change metabolism and can determine how many nutrients are pulled from food, as well as the transit time of food through the intestinal tract.(4) All of these factors affect weight.

A healthy inner ecosystem also means more beneficial microflora helping you digest the foods you eat, and a digestive tract that functions inefficiently. Fermented foods are packed with vitamins, minerals, and healthy microflora that heal your inner ecosystem. Cultured vegetables and Young Coconut Kefir are just two examples of superfoods that help us stay healthy, slim, and youthful.

A warning about antibiotics, a popular therapy used to control even low-grade infections. Not only have several antibiotic-resistant superbugs evolved from the overuse of antibiotics, but also many of us have a dwindling populating of good bacteria in our intestinal tracts.

Processed foods, too much sugar, and excessive stress further affect the inner ecology of our gut. Dysbiosis in the gut leads to weight gain. Before implementing probiotic foods into your diet, you may want to consult a functional doctor to address imbalances in the gut and treat dysbiosis too reduce harmful bacteria in the gut.

Fermented foods and drinks greatly reduce sugar cravings. If you’d rather drink something quickly, you may want to try drinking just 4 ounces (½ cup) before bed, which can significantly impact what kind of bacteria your intestinal tract harbors.

4. Food combining. Food combining is the little-known secret to eating well that enhances your digestion to give you energy and to help weight loss and keep the weight off.

Proper food combining is a system of eating foods that combine together efficiently to assist digestion so that your digestive tract does not have to work so hard to give you the nutrients you need for energy. You can learn the basics with three simple guidelines:

Eat Fruits Alone on an Empty Stomach. As mentioned before, fruit that is low glycemic like lemons and limes, unsweetened juices from cranberries and black currants, and pomegranates is metabolized quickly. So if you pair it with something like a protein, which is metabolized very slowly, the sugar can sit in the gut which can lead to an overgrowth of bad bacteria.

With that said, these sour fruits combine best with kefir and yogurt made from milk or sprouted seeds and nuts. Nuts, seeds, and dairy foods including cheese are called “protein fats” because they truly are a protein and a fat combined together by nature.

Eat Proteins with Non-Starchy Vegetables and/or Ocean Vegetables.  If you eat proteins and starches together, they tend to neutralize each other and inhibit digestion. The poorly-digested food travels through the digestive tract, reaching the intestines, where it putrefies and causes your blood to become acidic. It also provides a welcome environment for disease-causing pathogens!  Taking digestive enzymes can also help the body to better break down protein at each meal.

Eat Grains and Starchy Vegetables with Non-Starchy and/or Ocean Vegetables. When I refer to grains, I always talk about amaranth, quinoa, buckwheat, and millet. These ancient grains are high in protein, gluten-free, and rich in B vitamins, and they feed the beneficial bacteria in your inner ecosystem.

You might find after just a few days of following food combining principles that some weight loss has been achieved.  Your body will no longer be bloated, and you’ll rid yourself of toxins.

You might also feel hungrier — just eat more frequently. As long as you are combining properly and eating when you are hungry, you will likely not gain weight! As your energy increases, you will find you now have more energy to exercise. This then will result in the weight loss you want, becoming more slender and well-toned.

5. Sleep well! Sleep and weight loss go hand in hand. When sleep is reduced or interrupted, the effects on the fat you lose can decrease.(5) Your body needs time to re-energize from the possible stressors (anxiety, stress, depression) and rejuvenate GABA and tryptophan so that we also don’t crave foods that aren’t good for us.

Also, try not to eat dinner too late, and choose something that doesn’t have protein (since that takes longest to digest).

6. Use digestive enzymes.  Digestive enzymes help your body to break down large food molecules, waste products, and even cellular debris when taken at the right time. Enzyme deficiency can also contribute to an overgrowth of pathogenic microorganisms because food is more likely to sit in the digestive tract and ferment, leading to an inflammatory response and bloating.

7. Consider taking a liver supplement. Removing toxic foods from the diet is one part of weight loss, while enabling the body to get rid of old toxins is another important aspect. If you haven’t taken steps to cleanse your body and open up your bile ducts, it’s important to consider making this your next step. Use something that is specially formulated with protective herbs and bile stimulants that support liver detoxification.

In Summary

All of these factors are at the root of weight loss.

Study after study points to the necessity of balancing the internal environment in order to achieve any significant and lasting changes in weight.

Weight loss isn't just about eating fewer calories and exercising. You can make a difference in maintaining a healthy weight by eliminating dietary toxins that stress the body and cause an inflammatory response, which is directly linked to weight gain.

This lifestyle adjustment provides you with all the necessary tools to help lose weight fast, cool inflammatory stress, repopulate the gut with friendly microbes, clean up internal toxins, and alleviate sugar cravings.

Kelly Barnhart’s Vibrant Is Bringing Modern Wellness Food To Houston

'Underworked and squeaky clean food for feeling good' -- that's how we'd define the modern menus of so many wellness-driven cafes in L.A. and New York -- from honey hi in Echo Park to Butcher's Daughter in Williamsburg. And it's exactly how Kelly Barnhart defines her own menu at Vibrant, a Houston-based and responsibly sourced cafe she founded in 2018.

While green juice and gluten-free pancakes may be trendy, or even low-key obnoxious, to some, we find these kinds of menus totally inspiring. Here's why. Modern wellness menus are exciting, new and interesting enough for good foodies to order from -- they also make us feel incredibly good. They also prove that rigorous values around health and sustainability can still be fun, stylish, and high-design.

We talked with Vibrant founder, Kelly Barnhart about her interesting menu, deeply held values around sustainability and the incredibly beautiful dining room...

Congratulations on Vibrant, although you've now been open for more than two years. Tell us about the concept in a nutshell: We opened in August of 2018 with the intention to create a space where people could come and experience well-being and pleasure through food, design and one another.

We love that the menu is fully gluten, dairy and refined sugar free, but that the food still feels local and accessible. How would you describe Vibrant's menu? An eclectic all-day menu that highlights pared down classics and incorporates distinct local and regional ingredients. The goal with each dish is to provide really delicious food while maintaining and enhancing it's nutritional integrity.  It's food for feeling good.

Blue masa pancakes + Caramel donut with bee pollen

Your favorite personal meal at Vibrant? Our chicken tacos with chipotle cashew crema. We make the best blue corn tortillas from scratch daily and the chicken is from Three Sisters; a local sustainable farm.

Vibrant's values stretch so far -- from clean eating to composting. Talk to us about the efforts you think are the most exciting and the ones are most proud of?  It all goes hand-in-hand really; from how we source ingredients for the menu to our biodegradable to-go packaging, we consider our waste, impact on the environment, and the kinds of agricultural and food practices our dollars support.

Right now we are focused on growing our composting program and further reducing our daily food waste. We get monthly diversion reports and use those as a metric for improvement. It has been exciting to discover how many of our guests care just as much about these things as we do.

You make your bread, cheese, milks and sausage from scratch in-house daily! How do you pull that off? Sounds incredible. With a lot of hard work and a kitchen team that understands the importance of their role in the Vibrant experience.

It's a process of honoring the fundamentals and using fresh, local ingredients to create beautiful dishes with minimal alteration without compromising their nutritional value. Nothing is overworked.

We love that you offer a CSA box! Can diners essentially leave lunch with a produce bag for later?  On certain days of the week, yes! We partnered with Animal Farm and they provide weekly, just-picked bags of produce and eggs. You can also add an arrangement of their beautiful wildflowers.

How has the response been from the community? Clearly, people like Chalkboard readers in Houston must be excited, but has a lot of education been required with the rest of your diners? I knew we were filling a void in Houston and there were others like me who craved something that just didn't exist here.  We have had a devout following from the time we opened the doors and much of our success has been through word of mouth. I think that's a testament to like-minded consumers who were looking for a place to nourish themselves in a more conscientious way.

Which Vibrant dish could convert any junk food devotee? Our Chicken Panini. Who doesn't love a warm, toasted sandwich? Our gluten-free focaccia, jalapeno-cilantro hummus and sunflower ricotta are creature comforts.

Greens and grain bowl with sprouted quinoa + macadamia cashew cheese

Let's talk about the design of the space. Who designed it, what were you aiming for? We love all the great chairs... The space designed itself in a way. The completely untouched, free standing 1961 dry cleaner we started with echoed a sentiment of completely stripped down, pared back minimalism.

The chairs are vintage and of the time, and were made in the spirit of creating great design for the masses. The color palette echoes the original clay bricks. The space works as a perfect medium for the food— simple, no unnecessary ingredients, and a lot of soul.

A few years ago, we'd say a cafe like Vibrant would only be found in LA or NYC. What are you most excited for your community to learn about and embrace? Vibrant was born out of necessity for exactly this reason! We have been most excited for people to experience clean food that doesn't sacrifice taste and to discover that well-being and pleasure can be synonymous.

Dr. Aviva Romm: 10 Things I Wish Women Knew About Their Health + Hormones

At sixteen years of age, Dr. Aviva Romm left college to become a midwife and an herbalist -- no doubt, before that was a cool thing to do.

Later, while raising four children, Romm decided to go back to school -- Yale School of Medicine, that is. A school that Romm calls "the most innovative, student-empowered medical school I could find".

As the author of seven best-selling books and a leading voice in holistic medicine, we're excited to begin sharing insights from Romm in the lead up to her new book, Hormone Intelligence: The Complete Guide to Calming Hormone Chaos and Restoring Your Body's Natural Blueprint for Well-Being.

Hormonal health couldn't be a hotter topic in wellness, as the challenges surrounding the new vaccine unfold around us every day. It may be holistic practitioners like Dr. Aviva Romm that help us to navigate these unusual times best.

We asked the world-renowned midwife, herbalist, Yale-trained MD, and board-certified family physician to talk to us about truths she wishes every woman knew about her body, hormones and overall health...

Dr. Aviva Romm Breaks 10 Myths On Women's Health + Hormones

Myths and misconceptions about women’s bodies have been perpetuated for centuries -- and have left a lot of us in the dark and misinformed about our hormones, health, and more. Separating fact from fiction can help clarify what’s normal and in doing so, ease some of the worry and stress so many of us secretly have about our bodies.

Here are some of the top myths I hear from women - and the actual truth!

Myth 1: Period Pain is Normal | Your period is a vital sign that gives you important information about your body and your overall health. While we may naturally experience the occasional cramp of pelvic heaviness, your period should never feel like a life sentence of suffering. It should not require you to pop ibuprofen or other pain meds each or most months, and you shouldn’t have to stop your life because of pain.

If your period is painful, it could be a sign of inflammation, elevated estrogen that causes heavy periods and a lot of cramping, or could, indicate an underlying gynecologic condition, most commonly endometriosis or adenomyosis and is important to explore further.

Myth 2: Taking the Pill is “No Big Deal” | When it comes to the Pill, the truth is that we have not gotten the whole story. While it’s prescribed to us as if it’s no big deal (4 out of 5 women have been on the pill at some point in their lives, and many are on it for 10 years or more), in fact, the Pill comes with a long list of side effects, mild to severe, that we should be aware of in making our decision about whether to use it. Depression, flares or new onset of autoimmune conditions, blood clots, heart attacks, and strokes are among the most serious. In the least, it can deplete numerous nutrients, including folate, vitamins B2, B6, B12, C, E, and D, magnesium, selenium, and zinc, so taking a multivitamin and vitamin D are important on hormonal contraception.

Aviva Romm hormonal intelligence book cover

Myth 3: Supplements and Herbs Don’t Really Work | While there is a lot of hype in the wellness world about supplements, there are many that really can make a difference in how we feel, as well as in our hormonal and general health.

Thoughtful supplementation can buffer what you’re not getting in your diet and can play an important role in the prevention and treatment of various health conditions. To name just a few that I turn to in my medical practice, calcium has been shown to reduce period pain, St. John’s wort can be very effective for depression, Vitex (chasteberry) can improve PMS, ovulation, fertility, and perimenopausal symptoms, and myoinositol has been shown to reduce insulin resistance and improve symptoms in PCOS.

Myth 4: Your Vagina Shouldn’t Smell |
Given the millions of bacteria and yeasts hanging out down there, which alter our vaginal pH, it’s natural for your vagina to have a fragrance -- and each of ours is uniquely our own, but can smell earthy, musky, briny, any number of ways.

It also varies throughout your menstrual cycle, and your life cycles -- it may shift in pregnancy and menopause, for example, and is often different post intercourse -- and may vary with sexual partners. When your scent is very different from normal, or should it become noticeably unpleasant, it could be a sign that your vaginal ecology and pH balance is disrupted or that there’s infection. Knowing when something’s off can also help you nip a problem in the bud.

Myth 5: Carbs are Bad for Our Health |  Going “against the grain” is trendy, with many “carbophobic” women now eating zero-carb diets, but much of the anti-grain information is fake news from the wellness world and very low-carb diets tend to backfire for women, especially prior to the perimenopausal years.

Complex carbs provide steady energy, are loaded with vitamins and minerals, provide healthy fiber, feed a healthy microbiome, keep cortisol in balance and promote calm moods, and benefit hormone health. The trick is choosing the right carbs, which makes a difference in how you feel. Whole grains, for example, are packed with B-vitamins which support a calmer mood. Sweet potatoes have lots of Vitamin A and other hormone- and immune-healthy nutrients. On the other hand, quick sugar sources like cookies deplete your nutrients while giving you a quick sugar high and then a low that worsens our moods.

Myth 6: There’s One Perfect Diet For Women | So many women are after the “perfect” diet. The diet that will be their magic wand solution to solving symptoms and the “ah-ha” eating plan that they can stay on for a lifetime. The truth is, there’s no such thing! Not only are our food and nutritional needs unique, but our personal needs change throughout our life cycles. What you needed in your teen years will not be the same as your childbearing years, pregnant years, breastfeeding, menopause years and all those subtle changes in between.

That said, there are core foods that form the foundation of what we all need to support optimal health: Whole, fresh foods, plenty of vegetables and fruits, good quality protein, especially fish, eggs, and vegan sources like legumes, healthy oils and fats, nuts and seeds, and slow-burning carbs in moderation. From there, being in tune with your own body and remaining open to shifts in your mindset are key to optimal eating across your lifespan.

Myth 7: If You Don’t Get Pregnant in 6 Months, You Need Fertility Treatment | Women often become concerned when they aren’t able to conceive within a few months, but it’s not unusual for conception to be a far longer process! It’s all too common that, instead of waiting a reasonable amount of time, many gynecologists foist you all too soon onto a road of fertility fear that is financially, physically and emotionally costly.

Even with no special treatment, on average by 18 months, 90% of women will get pregnant. Couples in their late thirties have a 91% chance of conceiving naturally within 2 years. A fertility work-up can be considered if you’re under 35 and have been trying to conceive for a year without success, or if you’re over 35 and have been trying for 6 months. If you want to get fertility treatment, of course, it’s your call, but you can wait longer - even up to 18 months - and try natural approaches, with great success, in my experience.

Myth 8: Perimenopause Signals “Drying Up” | Of all our life cycles, perimenopause is the least celebrated. While each of us experiences this next phase of our hormonal lives uniquely, the idea that this natural shift in our hormones signals some kind of slowdown or depletion state is simply ludicrous. Internalizing the message that we’re irrelevant, dried up, or past our prime holds us down and keeps us from claiming our authority and strength. By the time we reach our mid-to-late forties and early fifties, we’re smarter, sexier, and more badass than ever, with more wisdom, maturity, and life experience -- and often a whole new level of freedom in our lives that can make us more productive, energetic, and in my opinion, downright sexy. Own your strength. You’ve earned it.

Myth 9: Your Doctor Knows Your Body Better Than You | Ten years of medical training may mean that your doctor knows anatomy and physiology better than you do, but nobody knows you better than you. After all, you’ve had how many years of training in yourself? By now, at least a few decades!

It can be hard to trust yourself, especially if your medical provider is telling you that you’re just fine. From the time we’re kids, we’re raised on the 'doctor-as-god, expert-knows-best' model. But if you’re having symptoms that are affecting your well-being, something has changed from your usual baseline, or you just feel that something is off, trust your instincts and seek help until you get the right answer.

Myth 10: Your Hormones are the Enemy | We tend to think of our hormones as a source of distress, dysfunction, or at least an inconvenience of being “hormonal”, but your hormones aren’t the enemy and hormone imbalances aren’t just random. They also don’t mean you’re broken or crazy. They’re actually your body’s best friend -- because they’re giving you a major heads up that something’s going on that needs your attention. Your hormones, and your symptoms that happen because of them, are vital signs offering you powerful information that act as a complete inner guidance system and sometimes a warning system, too, alerting you when you’re not getting what you need for hormone health — which also means for your best total health.

When we take back the knowledge of our bodies that’s been held from us for so long, we begin to enter into a whole new, deeper relationship with them. It’s a revolutionary act to listen to our bodies - something our culture totally devalues. But we all have powerful innate body wisdom that’s there waiting for you when you’re ready to tap into it. It’s our secret language. Let’s reclaim it. To learn much more about your hormones, natural approaches that really work, and more myths that are getting in the way of living our best and biggest lives, check out my new book, Hormone Intelligence, wherever you love getting books.

What The Heck is the Ballancer Pro? Celeb Aesthetician Joanna Vargas Breaks It Down

The topic of lymphatic health is finally getting the spotlight in the wellness world thanks to pros like Lauren Roxburgh and Lisa Gainsley, who have been treating lucky Angelenos for years.

One iteration of lymphatic treatment we're seeing at spas often these days is the Ballancer Pro. It looks like a space suit, feels like a full-body massage, and produces results just short of miraculous for those who need it. These days, that'd be all of us, after a year of relative stagnation and lack of movement.

Celebrity esthetician and author of Glow From Within, Joanna Vargas, is probably best known for prepping Hollywood's elite on both coasts -- but especially during award season from her ultra-posh Sunset Tower spa. We asked Vargas to break down the tech behind the odd, and often under-rated, treatment that can be found at more and more spas world-wide...

Celebrity Facialist Joanna Vargas on the Ballancer Pro

Can you describe the Ballancer Pro for those who are totally unfamiliar?

The Ballancer Pro Treatment is an FDA-approved, touchless, full-body lymphatic drainage massage that promotes cell and tissue regeneration, reduces water weight and has incredible slimming and contouring effects. It’s a very relaxing, gentle pressure that moves from the toes up the legs, to the mid-section. It pulses by zone, and the feeling is a rhythmic, upwards pulsation.

For those who don't know, can you talk about the important role the lymphatic system plays in our skin -- and overall -- health?

Your lymphatic system brings important nutrients and carries away waste from every cell in the body. It also boost immunity. A sluggish lymphatic system can create more acne, breakouts, even dull, dry skin. It will also make you puffy. We need it to perform well in order to have great skin.

Lymphatic drainage is the movement of the lymph through the body via massage or stimulation. There are many other ways to stimulate lymphatic drainage (dry brushing, green juices, manual massages) but the Ballancer Pro is one of the easiest and most efficient ways to stimulate all over lymphatic drainage.

What are the most common benefits you hear about from clients who have experienced Ballancer Pro?

A reduction of puffiness, an energized feeling throughout the body, the loss of inches in problem areas, a reduction of the appearance of cellulite.

Lymphatic health treatments are definitely trending. Why do you think people are finally catching on?

They work on everyone and really make you feel and look better!

How many sessions do you normally recommend for results?

You can see and feel some results in just one. Many people do them once a week for three weeks, but we also recommend a monthly session just to stay healthier overall. If one does the Ballancer Pro every day, it's possible to lose the water weight of 2 dress sizes in just one week.

Any side effects people should be aware of?

None. But it is not a treatment for anyone with pre-existing medical conditions. I also don’t recommend drinking alcohol after the treatment, make sure you are hydrating before and after with tons of water.

Going to an office of any kind can be a lot for people right now. "Touchless" treatments like this one seem ideal?

I think that, moving forward, people will enjoy the quiet, touchless time with a Ballancer treatment even more. Self-care has never been more important than in the last year, so, yes, I do see that continuing for people in the future!

A Dirty Mouth: Why Oil Pulling Is More Important Than You Think

Continuing our important series with wellness expert Elissa Goodman, we're talking all about a topic we've never touched on so specifically before: mouth bacteria (gross, right?). We're shocked to hear how closely oral health is related to some very important health issues. Just read the quote from Dr. Joseph Mercola below.

“Studies unequivocally show that bacterial imbalances and dysbiosis in your mouth can contribute to inflammation in your body and activate cancer genes.”Goodman is shedding some light on this very important topic and recommending six valuable action steps we think you'll find illuminating. Read them through and then, like we've done, share this article with just about everyone you know...

Your mouth is a breeding ground for bacteria. A toxic mouth taxes your immune system and causes inflammation, keeping your body from producing healthy cells, creating an environment ripe for breeding cancerous tumors. It is imperative that your immune system work at its max just to counteract the toxicity in the air, water and food supply. By using the solutions below, you can clear the harmful bacteria from your mouth so your body can focus on keeping you cancer and disease free.
