NYC’s The Smile Opens A New Eatery In Downtown L.A.

L.A. is having a moment and it's not about to pass anytime soon. With all the hype about balanced living and fashion's turn toward all things wellness, this city has received a fresh wave of attention for our green juice-swilling, superfood-packing ways - and we love it!

Some of that attention is coming straight from New York, as so many NYC staples we love launch West Coast counterparts. The team behind The Smile, the eatery serving whole foods and homey vibes on Bond Street in New York, today opens a di Alba in DTLA. The Arts District restaurant offers a cozy foccacia (yes there's a gluten-free option!), grain and green salad driven menu in a space filled with citrus trees and lined with a laid-back to-go counter.

Like most of our favorite new spots in the city, di Alba feels like it's been tucked away on East 3rd Street for years. And we're pretty sure the neighborhood will take right to it. Here are three incredibly simple, health and affordable items that'll be on the new menu that have us convinced:

Classic rustic foccacia with rosemary, sage, smoked salt - gluten free ($3)
Beets and avocado salad with little gem lettuce, orange roasted beets, avocado, mint, hazelnuts and sherry vinaigrette ($6)
Black quinoa with pomegranate, pink lady apple, cucumber, herbs, chives, citrus ($6)

Want to make a day of it? Shop the well-curated Poketo, savor bowls at Orsa & Winston, explore the area with these two, and, not open to the public, but nice to know it's there - The Giving Key headquarters as seen here.

This Seventy Year Old Bombshell Is Up-Ending Our Beauty Routines

How can we not obsess over Mimi Kirk? Mimi is a raw foodie who glows with vibrant clarity. She's over seventy, living well and an inspiration to all of us.

We were looking back at our interview with Mimi from 2012(!) and discovered this gem of a beauty tip that we cannot resist. Mimi owes her incredible skin to daily green juice, bathing, an abundance of fresh fruits and veggies and this simple skincare routine below. We've rediscovered this gem and are totally intrigued. Bath gloves for the face? Sounds divine, if a little rough. And black soap for this level of ageless appeal? It makes sense when you realize this holistic cleanser also exfoliates and deeply moisturizes with shea butter that promises not to clog pores.

Here's the interview question that sparked our 'new year, new routine' level of interest and has us questioning our bathroom full of product. What do you think - would you try Mimi's routine?

TCM: What are your top 3 bath and beauty products?
MK: My Exfoliating Bath Gloves are a must for me. I use them dry on my face and body then wet them and put Dr. Woods Black Liquid Soap on the gloves to wash my face and Dr. Woods Liquid Almond Soap with Shea Butter for my body.

See Mimi's full interview here and get inspired!

Skip The Take Out: We’re Making Kelp Noodle Pad Thai

Clean, crunchy and versatile, a good kelp noodle recipe can be a gluten-free gal's best friend. Since Claire Thomas of The Kitchy Kitchen knows how to make *all* the foods (you think we're joking, but see here), we wern't surprised when she killed it with this perfect pad thai recipe too.

Kelp noodles can be tricky (read: rubbery!) to play with if you don't know what you're doing. If you're just trying them for the first time, use a top notch recipe like Claire's to guide you through the process. When prepared well, these noodles are something to obsess over - don't say we didn't warn you!
