Inside the Chic New Sustainable Brand We’re Obsessed With

Baby alpaca. Cropped Italian trench coats. And these leather case sets (see above.) Yep, this is sustainable shopping at its best.

If you've never heard of fashion brand, Cuyana, get ready to fall in love. We're head over heels for just about everything in this brand's collection of high-quality, artisan-made (and totally affordable) pieces, each designed to give you a wardrobe of "fewer, better things." Shopping mindfully isn't always an easy task and the choice to buy "sustainable fashion" can sometimes feel like a contradiction in terms. Brands like Cuyana solve all our shopping conundrums with one sweeping motion of their Scottish wool cashmere capes.

We caught up with Karla Gallardo and Shilpa Shah, the ladies behind the growing brand, at their new Abbot Kinney shop here in L.A. and asked them to share a little about what inspires them, and what keeps them living in balance as they build a thriving fashion brand. Here's what they had to say...

The Chalkboard Magazine: Tell us about the meaning of the word 'Cuyana'. It's perfect for the brand.

Karla: Cuyana means to love in Quechua. We want to take the customer back to the essence of a product through its materials, design and craftsmanship, and for them to buy the things that they love, that will stay in their closet for years to come.

TCMHow did you two end up birthing the biz?

Shilpa: We met when I was applying for business school and Karla was in her first year. Both of us shared a love of fashion, but felt unfulfilled by the way the industry was pushing us to consume in an unthoughtful way. Fashion should be empowering and when it came to a woman’s go-to essentials, there was a lack of quality available in the middle range, between fast fashion and luxury goods. So, we set out to fill that gap. We believe you can have amazing quality and beautiful design, and it can still be accessible.

TCM: Talk to us about the brand's tagline "fewer, better." We love it!

Karla: The problem with trends is that they fade quickly, and women end up accumulating all of these things they don’t use. We focus on simple, beautiful design. Our pieces are created to be versatile and timeless so that a woman always feels in style in things that she loves. It’s not about quantity, it’s about quality.

TCM: Craftsmanship and sustainability are so romantic. Talk to us about one of the coolest sources/elements:

Shilpa: Something that’s special about our brand is that the pieces themselves are infused with the stories of the countries in which they were made and the people who made them. All of our cashmere scarves are made in Scotland from Scottish cashmere, by a family-owned supplier that has been crafting cashmere for decades. Our capes are made of baby alpaca, cut and sewn in Peru, and the alpaca itself comes from Peru, too. For leather - the cattle, the tanneries, the cutting and sewing - are all found in the same country, either Argentina or Italy. The items are not cheap, but given the quality, they're not expensive, either.

TCM: Do you have a favorite Cuyana piece?

Shilpa: I carry my oversized tote almost every day. Not only does it work with everything, but it also fits just about everything a busy day can bring.

Karla: My oversized alpaca sweater in black is the perfect go-to on chilly San Francisco days. Styling tip: It looks sophisticated with a crisp white shirt underneath.

TCM: Best business advice ever received...

Karla: Never launch anything without testing it first.

TCM: What's the key to your daily work/life balance:

Shilpa: Always share dinner with the ones you love - whether it’s your friends, your husband or your kids. That time each day is always precious to us.

TCM: What to you do to stay active and healthy?

Karla: I love to go spinning after work - it clears my head and allows me to log back on in the evening with a fresh state of mind.

Shilpa: I try to take advantage of the beautiful outdoors available to us living in the Bay Area: from skiing in Tahoe on the weekends to hikes in Marina and East Bay.

TCM: Tell us about a typical daily lunch:

Shilpa: We love Murraci’s ramen in San Francisco! It’s a great way to warm up during the colder months.

TCM: Your fave healthy pick-me-ups?

Karla: I love vegetable soup from Bio near our office, or I could eat avocado with everything.

Shilpa: Grilled cauliflower is one of my favorite healthy pick-me-ups.

TCM: Is there one workout or studio you love?

Shilpa: Yoga is definitely my go-to.

Karla: I enjoy pilates and I still like to visit SoulCycle occasionally.

TCM: When it comes to businesses lunches, where do you love to lunch?

Karla: Jane Cafe on Fillmore street is a perfect little stop in San Francisco. It has a great neighborhood vibe.

TCM: Do you have a most-loved sustainable material?

Shilpa: Baby alpaca is such a huge part of our brand’s story. It’s sustainable - the alpaca is actually shaven before the sweltering summer heat to prevent them from overheating - and practical, it doesn't pill, shed or snag, and it is eternally elegant.

TCM: Tell us about another sustainable brand you love and why:

Karla: We love the home brand Snowe in New York. Their collection is so intentional and each piece is lasting and gorgeously made.

TCM: What's your personal mantra?

Shilpa & Karla: Be humble and respectful, in business and beyond.

TCM April: Festival Season + Spring In Full Swing

If April's arrival has left any doubt in your mind that it's absolutely, officially spring, festival season is just two weeks away and will wipe all doubt from your mind.

We couldn't be happier about everything that spring brings with it, from baby greens to actual babies. And we're also feeling quite good about having quintessential L.A. girl, Whitney Port with us this month to both fuel our warm weather crop-top aspirations and keep us in the cool, balanced mood she's known for.

After all, if you haven't heard, this summer promises to be the season of #noFoMo and - since we already feel sheepish about using the term #fomo now, in spring, we'd rather introduce the concept now before it becomes completely passe next season.

We're all about feeling great, looking lithe, and living well here at TCM, but, if you've noticed, you'll rarely see the words "weight loss" here on our site and we've gone to great lengths to keep it that way. We have major opinions on the best way to drop lbs., but we'd rather focus most of our energy on encouraging healthful habits that inevitably help each of us reach states of glowy equilibrium.

The tips Whitney is sharing with us this month are all about that balanced lifestyle. Whitney knows how to break a sweat, but she also knows how to throw a dinner party (watch our Instagram for more.) We love throwing a cool girl like Whitney into the mix, just after introducing you to functional medicine pioneer, Dr. Mark Hyman. This is that Chalkboard life if all about - a little hard-core education followed up with advice that will make you feel like the next queen of Coachella.

Speaking of festival season, the incredible, fringey fanny pack situation featured in the image above comes to us from Hipsters for Sisters. If we could, we'd take over the entire The Shop this month with this one item: it's fringed, it lets you go hands-free, and it looks pretty boss with a pair of baggy ReDone cutoffs, if you ask us. What more does a girl need? Glad you asked. Watch for our upcoming round-up of exactly that.

If you're looking for more than that, check out our Festival Shop from last year, we still stand by it.

Other going-ons this month include our Earth Month Eco-Challenge. We're sharing tips for every single day of the month, because, if you're anything like us, one day just isn't enough and we need a longer period of time to mull over our habits at home and how they're effecting the planet. There's nothing too kooky here, we're talking practial ideas and workable changes with green pro, Ashlee Piper. Follow along and let us know what you think!

Have you visited the Spring Shop? See our round-up of dreamy pieces for the spring home, sexy sportswear for the gym and a few wellness tools we're loving now...

Meet Our April Guest Editor: At Home With Whitney Port

Whitney Port knows a thing or two about living well. This fashion designer and style icon might have a million titles under her belt, but being busy doesn't keep her from being balanced. By knowing when to hit the gym and when to hit the pinot, or when to stay in and when to step out, Whitney has mastered the concept of moderation without ever compromising her (obsession-worthy) style.

As our April Guest Editor, Whitney is dishing with us on living well while in L.A. (the staying in/going out ratio is crucial) and handling the frenzy of festival season without losing her cool.

After years appearing on screens of all sizes, Whitney now crushes it as the creative head of her own namesake fashion line. Each collection's custom prints and modern pieces are nods to the laid back femininity and savvy chic that Whitney has become so well-loved for.

To kick off our month with Whitney, we're spenidng the morning inside her sweet California abode talking smoothies, cycling and everything else that keeps her grounded, happy and in good spirits. Join us all month long, as we chat festival season survival, Instagram feels, and the best places to eat in LA!

TCM Earth Month: The 7 Day Kitchen Challenge

We're diving Right in to the first week of Earth Month with seven days of bite-sized goals for the kitchen!

Eco-chic lifestyle expert, Ashlee Piper of The Little Foxes, helped us launch our month-long Eco-Challenge last Friday with simple goals to drive less, tech less, and connect more. Who knew going green could be so deep?

For the next seven days, we're taking the challenge into the kitchen with daily tips that will get you thinking without knocking your week out of whack.

Go back and check out last weekend's first round of tips if you missed them, then join with us this week through the end of April as we all look for small, workable ways to do our part for the planet.

Let us know which of the daily tips end up sticking with you and your own favorite ways to make greener living an easy reality!

Monday, April 4th: Refuse Refuse
Did you know that the average American throws away around 6 pounds of trash a day, and only about 15% of that can be or gets recycled? Imagine carrying that around all day! Most of that waste is preventable. Today, focus on ways you can refuse unneeded items. Just say no to straws, plastic cutlery, and that mountain of napkins at your favorite restaurant. Pass on plastic bags and paper receipts. Be like a celebrity diva and turn your nose up at crap you don’t need. After all, it’s for a good cause. It may be April Fool's, but we ain’t joking!

Tuesday, April 5th: B.Y.O.B.
Not just for wine anymore, bringing your own bottles and cups is a big planet saver. Each day, 60 million plastic water bottles alone are thrown away each day. Opt for a chic reusable bottle (I am a sucker for bkr’s trendy glass bottles) and bring your own reusable mug to your favorite coffee shop. Some will even give you a discount for bringing your own. The perks? You’ll stay better hydrated with sippage at your fingertips (hello, dewy skin!) and you’ll help spread awareness when your favorite barista asks you about your cute new mug habit.

Wednesday, April 6th: Create a Portable Eco-Arsenal
It carries your gym shoes, laptop, lunch and various other items, but if you’ve got a few lightweight reusable basics in your bag at your fingertips wherever you go, you’re much better equipped to refuse disposables. Outfit your daily bag with the following: A set of bamboo cutlery, a collapsible reusable shopping bag, small cloth bag (to hold sandwiches, produce, or snacks), reusable water bottle (S’well is nice because it can hold hot or cold bevvies), stainless steel straw, and a cloth napkin. These items take up little space, but will help you eschew hundreds of pounds of waste each year.

Extra credit: If you eat out and take home leftovers consistently, bringing your own stainless steel bento box in lieu of Styrofoam, plastic, and paper takeout containers.

Thursday, April 7th: Go Meatless
Go meatless for a meal, for a day, for the month, for your whole dang life. Whatever works best for you. Eschewing meat is one of the most eco-friendly things you can do, and with so many tasty options (be sure to peruse The Chalkboard’s tasty plant-powered recipes or try my Pan-Fried Avocado Tacos with Pickled Onions), it’s easier than ever. One pound of beef requires 1,900 gallons of water, not to mention all of the rainforest clearing and CO2 emissions that go along with animal agriculture (the U.N. ranks it one of the leading causes of environmental distress; worse than all transportation industries combined. Yikes!).

What’d you make/nosh for your tasty meatless meal?

Friday, April 8th: Shop the Farmer’s Market
Few things are as fun as a trip to a sunny, brimming-with-fresh-goodies farmer’s market and it’s the perfect complement to your tech-free 24 hours. Bring your reusable tote bags and buy as many package-free provisions as you’ll need for the week. From loaves of fresh bread, to veggies and fruits, to gorgeous plants, homemade jams, and even soaps, discover your local market, get to know the sellers, and enjoy the fruits (literally) of your visit by making a dope meal from your purchases. You’ll save money, support local businesses, eat more healthfully and help the planet by eschewing the package- and energy-heavy superstore.

What did you get at the farmer’s market?

Saturday, April 9th: Shift How You Shop
With a few small habit changes, you can make a trip to the grocery store more efficient, cost-effective and environmentally-friendly. Firstly, use your phone to create a list that maps to the store and stick to it. Then, bring a kit of reusable grocery bags, mason jars (for items that would usually be packed in plastic containers like olives, pre-made foods, bulk spices, coffee), and smaller cloth bags (for produce and bread). Then, shop the perimeter of the store where most items are less packaged and opt for bulk bins wherever possible. You’ll not only save money (generally bulk items are 20% cheaper), but you’ll cut down on unnecessary packaging.

Bonus: Less packaging often means you’re eating more healthfully, and we dig that. We love Zero Waste Home for guidance on how to create your own green shopping kit and where to find stores that sell a host of items in bulk.

Sunday, April 10th: Consider Compost
You reuse. You reduce. You recycle. Now it’s time to consider composting! You see, organic matter (i.e. food scraps) in landfills break down anaerobically (without oxygen) and produce methane gas, a greenhouse gas 21 times more harmful than CO2. It doesn’t matter if you live in a giant metropolis or a small town, composting options are available to all and chicer (and less smelly) than ever. From freezing your food waste and bringing it to the Farmer’s Market (many vendors will gladly accept it to add to their compost heaps) to backyard and compact kitchen composters to services like Chicago-based Healthy Soil Compost, which provides bins and picks up waste weekly via bicycles, there’s an option that makes sense for your lifestyle and schedule.

Do you compost?

The AstroTwins On Finding The Right Florals for Your Sign

Yes, it's April Fool's Day, but we're not joking around here. Selecting the right florals by your zodiac sign is actually a thing!

While our astrological traits aren't the only thing to influence our disposition from day to day, they certainly have a great effect - so why not shop for something as mood-based as florals in a more intuitive way? Birthday shopping for the perfect blooms to send someone at home? Just check the date, match their sign and find an arrangement they're basically destined to love!

These fascinating tips come to us via model and entrepreneur, Frederique van der Wal. Fredrique's Choice is the model's latest passion project, designed to upgrade the floral delivery experience to an artisanal level. Her collection of twelve Horoscope Bouquets were crafted in collaboration with the AstroTwins, Ophira and Tali Edut. These sisters are the official astrologers for a few of our favorite sites, including Garance Dore, and apparently know their way around a good flower mart...

Check your sign, your bestie's sign, and then email this link to your boyfriend, so he knows how to avoid any future floral mishaps...

Floral inspiration for all 12 zodiac signs

Aries: passionate reds March 21 - April 19
The Aries bouquet showcases the color red highlighting the traits of energy, passion and positivity that those born under this star sign have as characteristics. Aries are adventurous, versatile and positive. Red plays to their passion and energy - so we’ve made this bouquet red with a touch of pink. We use red roses and spray roses, along with snapdragons, which signifies being bountiful and abundant.

taurus: white on white April 20 - May 20
The Taurus bouquet bursts with white Madonna lilies, calla lilies, snapdragons and roses to represent the sign’s signature color: white. White signifies purity and can represent a successful beginning. White connects with the Taurus traits of protectiveness, patience, warmth, caring and reliability. We also use a green-white trachelium to convey serenity.

Gemini: savvy turquoise May 21 - June 20
Geminis are friendly, savvy and smart; their color is greenish-turquoise. The bouquet includes green amaranthus, a beautiful flower not often seen in arrangements (sometimes called the “forever flower,” it’s long-lasting and beautiful for a mantel), as well as delphiniums, hydrangeas and roses.

Cancer: true silver June 21 - July 22
The color for the compassionate and resourceful Cancer is silvery white. We use lilies and lace flower (which connotes strength and yet delicacy), and the eucalyptus silver dollar - green and silvery - gives it a really nice feel. This bouquet accentuates Cancer’s inspiration, truth and kindness.

Leo: radiant gold July 23 - August 22
Leo likes yellow-gold. They are gregarious, and this bouquet is alive with an element of humor. We use yellow rose, peach rose and pussy willow to accentuate and increase strength, courage and vitality. And there’s solidago, which further showcases a Leo’s radiance and cheerful disposition.

Virgo: blue details August 23 - September 22
Those born under this star sign are detail-oriented, dedicated and nurturing. Virgo’s color is navy blue, and the bouquet is accentuated with additional shades of blue and purple. It includes bells of Ireland, a purplish hydrangea that goes from navy blue to real purple, a deep purple lisianthus, eucalyptus silver dollar and agapanthus (aka African lily) to represent strength, focus and determination.

Libra: fresh scents September 23 - October 22
For Libra’s green, we incorporate hydrangeas and bells of Ireland to complement a Libra’s cultured sensibility and sincerity; for balance and a sense of sophistication, white is added with lisianthus, to reflect gratitude and appreciation; and eucalyptus, to represent freshness.

Scorpio: dark + moody  October 23 - November 21
Scorpio is a strong and dark sign with an inherent moodiness; the color is burgundy. So we use roses so deep that they are almost maroon, dark lilies and eucalyptus with crimson berries. The intensity of these colors is synonymous with the intense nature of those born under this star sign, who are known for their determination and great power of concentration.

Sagittarius: orange depths November 22 - December 21
This is very much the time of year when leaves change, and the zodiac color for Sagittarius - orange - reflects that. Orange stimulates creativity and feelings of joy. Sagittarians have inquiring minds and are highly intellectual. They live life with gusto! So the Sagittarius bouquet includes calla lilies, which symbolize a deep well of knowledge and intuition; and hydrangea, which is a symbol of creating your destiny to play up the sign’s traits of adventurousness, awareness and open-mindedness.

Capricorn: black in bloom December 22 - January 19
Capricorns are diligent, strong and organized planners; the color for this sign is the darkest - black - and complementary colors are white, khaki and Indigo. The bouquet has very deep red roses; lily adds a pop of color; pussy willow branches represent strength; and the lisianthus represents a symbol of appreciation.

Aquarius: blue flash January 20 - February 18
For Aquarius, turquoise-blue hydrangeas enhance originality, vision and compassion. Also, delphiniums are a symbol of infinite possibility. Eucalyptus is used for its refreshing property, and bells of Ireland are unexpected and original. This is a fresh bouquet for January, when we’re starting fresh and making new choices.

Pisces:fresh greens February 19 - March 20
For the easygoing, open Pisces, sea-green is a good representation for the fish. For its color, we used hydrangeas, green roses - which are actually yellow-green - and feathered eucalyptus, which promote the “green” feeling. This bouquet helps increase Pisces’ creativity and tranquil nature.

It’s Earth Month! Join Us For Our 30-Day Eco-Challenge

When it comes to downsizing and detoxing our living space, eco-lifestyle expert, Ashlee Piper of The Little Foxes is our go-to gal. We teamed up with Ashlee last summer for the ever-relevant Closet Detox series and our readers loved it. So, in honor of Earth Month which starts today (yes, it's an entire month, people!), we're collaborating again for thirty days of earth-friendly challenges that could make even the least leafy among us develop an eco-conscience.

We're hopping right in below with challenges for today and through the weekend! We've made each challenge bite-sized and accessible. Make it your goal to join in daily, but if that seems like too much for you, don't drop out - find at least one way a week to show some love to Mama Earth.

Check in with us each Monday in April as we reveal a week's worth of daily challenges and make it your goal to hit as many as you can. We can't wait to hear your feedback, your stories, and your own personal takes on making these tips come to life. When it comes to daily detoxification and downsizing our planetary impact, we believe it's the little things we do that build into a sustainable impact...

Friday, April 1st: Drive Less; Move More
Now that the weather isn’t so frosty in most of the country, this is an easier (and more enjoyable) tip to follow. Think on this: The U.S. has 1,000 times more cars per person than any other country in the world, transportation accounts for 30% of all global warming emissions and 66% of Americans are overweight or obese (as compared to 37% in other countries). Notice a pattern? Our reliance on transportation has made us unhealthy - and it takes a toll on the planet. Try dusting off your bike or renting one from a bike share, taking a good old fashioned walk or jog (see if your local animal shelter will let you take one of their pups for a trot; it’ll make both of you happy), or using public transit to go longer distances.

How did you get moving today?

Saturday, April 2nd: Unplug and Reconnect
Official Earth Day also marks the official start of Passover. No matter your spiritual ilk, you can celebrate both important events with a technology Shabbat. Starting at sundown, commit to a solid day of no tech usage. This means computers, phones, tablets, televisions, and other tech staples are powered down and put away (tell loved ones a way to reach you in case of an emergency). Come together by telling stories, playing board games, cooking or another group activity that involves honest-to-goodness interaction without people spacing out in front of a screen. If you’re solo, read a book, write in a journal, garden, create something wonderful. A solid 24 hours sans social media, constant texts and emails, and winky emojis may feel impossible at first, but the soothing benefits of this practice will make you want to do this every week.

What did you learn from this practice?

Sunday, April 3rd: Kick Back and Get Educated
If your Sunday funday consists of a little couch time, make it count by watching some of the fantastic eco- and animal-awareness documentaries available. The True Cost, Forks Over Knives, Wasteland, Plastic Paradise, Gasland, and Earthlings are all eye- and mind-opening flicks.

Have any other recommendations that changed the way you viewed your relationship to the environment or animals?
