Party In Our Plants: Are Pilea Peperomioides The Coolest House Plants?

Forget about the fiddle leaf fig. The latest little green wonder at the top of our weekend nursery checklist is the pilea peperomioides.

Pilea peperomioides aren't easy to track down, so unlike our other potted faves, you won't find this elusive species in every trendy home shop -- which makes us love them even more.

Our indoor plant obsession is very real. We love the instant warmth they add to the home. We also consider plant shopping a solid way to spend a post-brunch weekend afternoon. Here's why we think this uniquely adorable little plant is destined to land on every design-savvy home's shelf in 2017...

What It Is: Pilea peperomioides is an indoor plant we can quite pronounce, with a background story that's way too cute. Also known as the "Chinese money plant," pilea peperomioides came to Europe sometime in the 1940s. A Norwegian missionary brought a few back from his travels through China. He gifted the easy-to-propagate leaves to friends and family, who continued the process of growing and giving away little pieces of the plant. Eventually, it made its way across the entire continent and beyond.

Why We Love It: We can't get over the smooth, unusual, modern-looking leaves of this little plant, especially paired with our minimalist design obsession. It looks like it came from another universe, but is still totally chic (awfully modern, don't you think?). Assuming you can even track one down, pilea peperomioides are generally easy to keep alive. All these plants needs are bright, indirect light and a sprinkle of water when the soil is dry.

Why You Need It: This is a statement-piece plant like no other: its unique look makes for many the perfectly staged Instagram, all while keeping our air pure like the best plants should. Propagating this plant is easy. Breed a billion and turn every open countertop into a personal pilea paradise, or gift a mini to your friends. We adore the idea of summer gatherings where guests leave with a new plant baby to love. They can continue spreading the love as it grows. Simply pop an offshoot into a small glass container filled with water and watch as it flourishes!

We Tried 5 Non-Toxic Mascaras + Here’s What Happened

never underestimate the power of a double layer of mascara. We know lash extensions are trending, but we're big believers in the power of a good ol' wand and tube. There are a billion brands on the market, but if you're looking to keep your beauty capsule chemical-free you know that the struggle to find the right product is very real.

We've tried our fair share of mascaras in the past and we're the first to admit that not all "natural" mascaras are created equal. We put our lashes to the test this spring and tried almost every mascara at green beauty hub The Detox Market. These are our top five picks for gorgeous, full, flake and clump-free lashes without a toxic ingredient in sight...

6 Thoughtful Ways to Use Crystals in Your Wedding

Every bride wants to shine on her wedding day -- mind, body and spirit. A simple, yet special way to bring the best vibes into play is by incorporating healing crystals into your big day. From a sweet pre-ceremony ritual to a gorgeous gift for your bridesmaids, we love these modern ideas from Energy Muse.

When you use crystals in your wedding, the energy of love that is in the air becomes amplified. In mainstream culture, a crystalized wedding might bring to mind Swarovski-covered dresses, but for bohemian brides, crystals are as much guests of the wedding as they are a part of the decor. They set the mood for a night of vowing intentions and spreading love. The gift they give to the happy couple is one of positive energy, raised perspectives and heightened ability to manifest new beginnings — which, if you think about it, is a better gift than that second toaster you didn’t need.

For my wedding, our altar was at the center of a Native American medicine wheel. That’s a grid of crystals laid out in a circular pattern on the ground to maximize the spiritual energy of the day. Of course, at my wedding, I’d go all out with a giant crystal grid, but if your venue is a little less medicine wheel-friendly than mine was, there are also simpler ways for you to incorporate crystals into your wedding.

Line the Aisles

Similar to setting the energy with a crystal altar, you can also set the tone by placing a crystal at the end of each aisle. Not only is it an elegant way to mark the aisle with a colorful adornment, it also elevates and unifies everyone with the same vibration. Connected in the resonance of love, your attendees will feel one with the spirit of celebration.

Crystals For Your Bridesmaids

I always recommend this gesture to brides who are looking to do something special for their bridesmaids. While the day is all about the bride and groom, those who are joining you - and helping to make this occasion all that it is - should know the gratitude you feel at having their presence close. At my wedding, I gifted all my bridesmaids a piece of rose quartz to represent my love and gratitude for each woman in my life.

Rose quartz is a stone of the heart and surrounds you with the energy of love. Before the end of your bachelorette party, do a group intention setting together for your “love goals.” In addition to sharing the goals you wish to accomplish for yourself, express your gratitude for those gathered around you on this special occasion.

Wedding Bath Ritual

A few days before your wedding, pick up some flowers that represent love to you. On the morning of the day before your wedding, ideally when the sun is out, fill your bucket up with water. Hold the flowers over your heart and say:

Healing flowers, please infuse my mind, body and soul with the grace, beauty and magic that resides within the energy of Mother Nature. I ask my guardian angel and love angels to surround me now. Please cleanse me of any fears or wedding jitters that I may be holding onto in my conscious or subconscious mind. Raise my vibration to its highest frequency of love. I am love. Thank you, thank you, thank you and so it is.

Hold your two pieces of rose quartz over your heart and say: I am love. I am surrounded by love. I give and receive love. Take all the petals off the flowers and place them in your bucket of water. Place your crystals in the water as well. Sit quietly and place your hands in the water while tearing the flower petals into little pieces. With each tear of a petal, pray, meditate or set your intentions for your wedding day. At the end, the water, flower petals and crystals will hold the energy of your wishes and dreams. Place your bucket outside in the sun and let the water, petals and crystals soak up its energy for at least four hours. At night, when you’re ready to take your bath, light a candle and fill your tub up with warm water. Pour your floral + crystal water into your wedding bath. Soak for 20 minutes.

soMETHING BLUE - CELESTITE

“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” is a tried and true wedding tradition. With something blue in mind, this is a chance for you to get creative and bring this saying to life with a little crystal energy. A celestite crystal carries high-vibrational, calming powers to uplift your energy and relieve any nervousness before you make your way down the aisle. Wire it into your wedding bouquet, use a celestite stone to make a hairpiece or sew a stone into your dress.

Crystal Place Settings

Mark each attendee’s place setting with a small crystal that will also be their take-home gift. Atop the card scribed with their name, set a crystal that you have infused with positivity. In turn, it will release that elevated energy back into the environment of your reception.

Crystal Centerpieces

Whether you choose a large size or the petite size, crystal geodes make the perfect centerpieces. They have two halves that fit perfectly together, representing the couple coming together to their new partnership. On an aesthetic level, the tiny crystals that line the geode sparkle and glimmer when they hit the light, resembling diamonds. On an energetic level, the calcite or quartz constantly work to cleanse and clear the energy of your wedding space to increase the flow of positive energy.

Are You Aging Rapidly? One Doctor’s Solutions For A Modern Phenomenon

There's aging, then there's aging well. The difference comes down to knowing what our bodies need -- and then having a little fun with it!

All month, hormone hacker, aging expert and May Guest Editor, Dr. Sara Gottfried, has been showing us how to grow up gracefully, and equipping us with ways to do it regardless of how many decades we have under out belt. This week we're diving into her picks for the coolest tools to age with ease, from a high-tech meditation headband to a sauna date night...

Rapid, unnecessary aging is the biggest problem I see unaddressed right now in modern medicine. It’s the reversible problem that no one knows they have. My newest book Younger, is about how you’re stuck with the genes you have but not how they’re expressed or communicated in your body. Up to 90% of the gene activity that occurs with aging and contribute to disease can be turned back by lifestyle choices and the environment created by your chosen lifestyle.

In this book, I reveal what I call the "Younger protocol". It's a system of living that helps you interpret the warning signs of age in your body – the worsening vision, the thinner skin, the weaker lungs, the faulty memory – and turn them around to help you feel healthier and stronger. During the seven-week protocol, I share food, sleep, exercise, stress-busting and brain-boosting ideas. Discover the top cures that will slow down your aging process. Here are a few of my favorite tips...

Meditate. on another level.

Treat yourself to a Muse Brain-Sensing Headband for game-ifying meditation (pictured!). Because meditation reduces how you perceive stress, it has the power to help you maintain optimal levels. Muse assesses your brain’s state and then provides concordant music or other sounds to easily enter a meditative state. This makes meditation fun, and there’s even a self-competitive feature to encourage you to grow your practice.

Sauna It Up.

If you want to live long and healthy, you need molecular chaperones to tend to your DNA, and that’s what sitting in a sauna provides. Of all these forms of heat, dry saunas have the most evidence that they help you age well. Infrared saunas are not far behind. Sauna bathing is also relaxing; it eases stress while adding to your healthspan.

Hot saunas increase circulation, lower blood pressure and boost longevity. It’s like a mini workout, and the heat allows you to sweat out toxins through your skin. In my home, I have a two-person sauna by Sunlighten. My husband and I love it. Date night in the sauna! Jump into the sauna for at least 20 minutes four times per week for all the great benefits.

stress less + monitor it.

If you ask your doctor what your pulse is, he or she will usually give you a single number, typically between 60 and 90 beats per minute. But the heart does not beat like an unchanging metronome; the intervals between one heartbeat and the next are variable. HRV is the beat-to-beat variation in consecutive heartbeats as shown in electrocardiogram (EKG) recordings. A healthy heart rate is always variable because a body is always in a state of physiological and emotional change. When you inhale, your heart rate speeds up, and when you exhale, it slows down.

There are many options available to monitor heart rate variability (HRV) at home, on the go and while working out. Most require an app on a device such as an iPhone and a heart rate monitor. There are wrist-based monitors, as well as Bluetooth-enabled chest-strap monitors. I recommend a chest-strap version, as it is more likely to give a clinical-grade measurement. Here are two apps that do the job well.

The SweetBeat HRV app (iOS, Android) focuses on stress reduction, training and heart rate recovery. It will alert you when your HRV is not at a healthy level, prompting you to engage in a stress-reduction effort. The training component assesses whether you can train full out. Whether you should have a low-intensity day or even a day off.

The HeartMath Inner Balance Transformation System is an application that comes with a sensor and an earpiece that takes a pulse reading from your earlobe. The system encourages you to moderate your breathing and focus on positive emotions in order to reduce negative stress, improve relaxation and build resilience. By synchronizing your breathing using a breathing pacer on the app, you can make your HRV healthier and achieve a state of coherence. Get HeartMath

 Tea time, but really.

Guayusa is a ‘clean energy’ herb from the Amazon that has twice the antioxidants of green tea. One cup of this brewed white tea has 40-66 mg of caffeine, significantly less than coffee and black tea. Make a daily mug of hot tea to fill yourself up with polyphenols and antioxidants. Recruit the anti-inflammatory elements found in good tea.

use Cleaner Cosmetics.

Labels like “natural,” “chemical free,” “noncomedogenic” or "for sensitive skin" can fool us into thinking we’re buying something safe. That’s not always the case. According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, about 89% of the ingredients in all cosmetics (soaps, lotions, makeup, etc.) haven’t been evaluated by any publicly accountable agency or institution. It’s seriously scary business! I cleaned out my makeup drawer years ago and replaced everything with safer products. Here’s what I use regularly:

Annmarie Skin Care sells effective, organic, and cruelty-free beauty products made from natural oils and herbs. Tarte Cosmetics are lovely, clean, and serious powerhouses in the makeup department. Tarte specializes in high-performance cosmetics, which are glamorous and environmentally friendly. Zoya, Acquarella, and Keeki Pure and Simple for nail polish, which rank 2 or less on the EWG’s Skin Deep guide. Learn More.

Know Your Genes.

Perhaps the best-known personal genetics company, 23andMe lets you begin your gene exploration online by ordering one of its spit kits for $199. Once you receive your Personal Genome Service, you register and spit into the included container. Processing results takes six to eight weeks (after mailing back your saliva). Once the test has been completed, you can take advantage of the appendix in my new book, Younger, to learn about your disease risk and how to alter your lifestyle accordingly.

Detox Your Hair.

Hairprint is my go-to for a healthier hair-coloring alternative based on eco-chemistry. Conventional hair dye has links to a greater risk of breast cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, lung cancer, acute leukemia, multiple myeloma, and bladder cancer. Hairprint offers a nontoxic method to restore gray hair to its natural color. It works for brunettes and darker-colored hair, not blondes, although I’ve had good success with my light brown hair. (If you look at my book covers over the past five years, my hair has gotten darker due to abandoning toxic chemicals and replacing with Hairprint.)

The Magic of Zzz

Sleep is magic, a vital health boost for both body and brain. You want to make sure you’re getting all you can from your sleep time. While you could go to a sleep lab, why do that when you could get a sleep tracker, like the Jawbone Up and Misfit Ray to report the health of your zzzs.
