7 Clean Sunscreens You Need In Your Life This Summer

Does it make sense for a product that's meant to protect your skin to contain chemicals that can damage it? We don't think so either. As the warming weather calls for more and more time outside, we've recruited one of our favorite clean beauty bloggers - Annie Atkinson of She's in The Glow - to point us in the direction of some safe and effective SPF.

From a five ingredient compact stick for on-the-go protection to one that doubles as a makeup base, and another that's just for your lips, here are seven non-toxic sunblock options, perfect for whatever sunscursions your summer brings on...

Summer and sunscreen go hand and hand, so stocking up on the right SPF is essential. As a general rule of thumb, you should stick to physical block, like zinc or titanium dioxide. Physical SPFs are like wearing a protective layer of clothing that you can simply take off at the end of the day, leaving no room for bad skin reactions. Chemical blocks, on the other hand, react with your skin’s chemistry to block UV rays. Oxybenzone, a common ingredient in physical sunscreens, can even trigger allergic skin reactions and may be hormone disruptors. #yikes

Even popular high-end beauty brands formulate their sunscreen with oxybenzone, so it’s best to always keep a lookout when shopping for the right SPF.

Fortunately, there are some super chic green brands out there that have created safe, non-toxic and chemical-free sunscreens that actually perform. Here are my favorites.

Forget Flower Crowns: It’s the Year of the Floral Coconut Bowl

Forget lettuce wraps and cocktails inside pineapples. (Okay, maybe not. We love both those things!) But this summer's edible bowl food trend is all about coconuts.

We flipped out when the cute team of college buds behind Amazebowls took over our HQ to whip up these acai coconut bowls with toppings that almost broke all of our phone cams.

We're showing you how to make the ultimate acai bowl bar at home - basically, the coolest food trend happening around L.A this summer (thanks to Amazebowls' catering concept). The Amazebowls team cuts a little hemp milk into their acai blend which we love for extra fat, protein and fiber. The piece de resistance? Edible flowers and these frozen coconut halves that being to thaw as you eat them.

Gather your girlfriends, layout all the goodies and try to break the internet as a team...

Little Gem Salad Bowl With Avocado + Creme Fraiche

As a woman who made her name in the food world with a famously delicious coffee crunch cake, a fresh salad recipe like this one was the last thing we expected from confectioner extraordinaire, Valerie Gordon. Then again, when you're working with toffee and chocolate all day, you likely learn how to make a mean green salad like this one pretty quickly, just to counter all that sugar!

If you've ever wondered what to do with those perfect little leaves of Little Gem lettuce this time of year, this is the recipe for you.  This quick chop of spring produce, a few impossibly fresh herbs and a creme fraiche dressing have us hooked...

Think of this as a salad recipe that celebrates the freshness of a new season. As our days get longer with bright sunshine, we are treated to the blush and green harvest of the warmer seasons. Here, crunchy little gems and bitter radicchio are paired with the first asparagus of the year, along with handfuls of herbs, avocado and pink radishes.

In My Gym Bag With Karena + Katrina of Tone It Up

Are the Tone It Up girls ready to divulge their secrets to mermaid hair yet or what? One thing these two are always ready to dish on is their bikini-ready bodies and the hard-core routines they're using to achieve this level of strength and tone.

To be clear, we're all for body acceptance no matter your size! But that means honoring the efforts of babes like these two who make it their goal to stay strong and help women achieve core strength and muscle tone on a whole other level. The Tone It Up girls, Karena Dawn and Katrina Scott, maintain a level of strength that inspires us. No matter all of our different body shapes and sizes, all of us have muscles that need a little TLC for great energy, strength and longevity!

Karena and Katrina promote the kind of healthy habits we can get behind - strengthening the body through old-fashioned, hard-core conditioning and plenty of healthy foods.

We quizzed the girls on their most-loved work out accessories (hint: one has four legs and lots of fur), rifled through their beach bags, and learned the one tip that gets them out of bed for early AM workouts everytime...
