Superfood Spotlight: White Peony Root
What you need to know: An old Chinese saying states that "a woman who consumes peony root will become as beautiful as the peony flower itself." With a claim like that, who wouldn't be eager to try it? White peony root is one of the most prized herbs in tonic herbalism, used for promoting and enhancing beauty. White peony's specialty is the building, purification, and tonification of blood, which leads to a flawless appearance - the cleaner and healthier the blood, the more radiant and ageless the beauty! Why you should try it: Peony root is not only an important blood and beauty tonic, but can also be used to relax muscles. This makes it one of the most popular herbs amongst women, and for good reason: it helps to support a healthy menstrual cycle, including PMS. From an irregular flo" and night sweats to dizziness and high-risk scenarios, white peony can be utilized for its therapeutic benefits in all things female. Let's get together: While white peony root is not as easily located as other therapeutic herbs, it is quite popular in Asian markets. Simply purchase the root itself and steep in hot water to create a tea, and consume one to two times daily. If you are looking for a more simple way to get started, try Love Goddess Elixir by Dragon Herbs. This formula is not only intended to capture internal youth and beauty, but to increase feminine sexuality.

A Year of Cookies: 12 Sweet Recipes For Plant-Lovers
If you baked your way through these plant-based, gluten-free cookie recipes in one year, that would break down to roughly one cookie every other day. Now that's an annual plan we can get behind! With 2014 off to such a healthy start (so many of you took us up on January's juice cleanse offer and we know you've been trying that green juice soup recipe,) why not round out your stepped-up lifestyle with a few of these killer cookie recipes that taste every bite as delicious as their conventional counterparts? Veggie-blogger Jessica Murnane of One Part Plant surveyed the vegetarian food scene to collect all the best tips and recipes for plant-based cookies she could find. She's gathered her delicious research into one digital cookbook, and we couldn't be happier she has. Note the drool-worthy photo above and get into that kitchen to whip up these insane gluten-free cream pie cookies to test the waters. Bake and eat, then order the new cookbook here . Here's Jessica... When I first changed my diet, cookies were the first thing I figured out how to adapt to my new plant life. They became a tool to try and convince my more skeptical friends and family that my new eating ways weren’t freakish or extreme. And it worked. Those early cookies helped them understand. And because of that, the little guys have a special place in my heart. I am so excited to launch the first One Part Plant e-cookbook, A Year of Cookies! Inside, there’s a plant-based cookie recipe (gluten-free too!) for each month of the year. But they’re not just from me. I’ve enlisted some all-star friends to share their recipes too. And when I say all-star, I’m talking about heavy hitters in the kitchen, as well as design pros. Try these cream pies from the book to give the recipes a shot for yourself.

The Kinfolk Table: One Perfect Recipe and A Cookbook Giveaway!
Like so many of our favorite cookbooks, Kinfolk's beautiful new hardback,The Kinfolk Table: Recipes For Small Gatherings, reads less like an instructional manual and more like a collection of short stories. In Nathan's travels around the world with the magazine, he has eaten around so many wonderful home cook's tables. In Kinfolk's first cookbook, he has gathered their stories, traditions and recipes into one image-rich collection. Broken up geographically, the cookbook takes us through the homes, kitchens, yards and gardens of friends from Brooklyn, Copenhagen, the English countryside and back again to Portland, where Nathan and Katie make their home. The rustic and delicious Italian dish below comes from a Portland contributor, coincidentally, yesterday's featured florist, Riley Messina of Erba Studio. We love this recipe for it's versatility. Alter it to suit a crowd of your husband's carnivorous friends or serve the one-pot wonder without the meat and a couple of chilled bottles of white for a casual winter lunch for the girls. Try the recipe for yourself and enter to win our cookbook giveaway below! From the Molise region of Italy, ciabbottola means “fills the belly” and is a rustic brunch or lunch dish. To make it even heartier, you can add fresh Italian sausage: Remove it from the casings and cook in step 2 along with the onions, breaking up the pieces while cooking. [olists num=1] [olists num=2]

Super Bowl: Superberry Chocolate Chia Pudding
with more than just one sweet tooth in our healthy little smiles, crafting ways to reinvent classic desserts is something of a sport in our office. Though refined sugars, white flour and unhealthy fats are not in our diet, desserts will always be a non-negotiable. The trick to keeping dessert on the menu is to take the basic flavors and components and replace them with nutrient-rich, health-promoting alternatives. With Valentine's Day right around the corner, chocolate has been on the brain. As simple and basic as chocolate pudding may be, it always hits the spot and we thought we'd give it a try. The first step to making a healthy pudding? Chia. If you have not tried chia yet, then this superfood seed is about to become one of your favorites in the kitchen. With the addition of liquid, the seeds burst, miraculously transforming themselves into a gel. This chia gel has a neutral taste that lends itself to any flavor profile or dish you desire - whether in a smoothie, pudding, baked good or breakfast bowl. As one of the world’s oldest and most powerful superfoods, chia is not only a great dessert alternative, but it also fills a gap in your daily nutrient intake. Chia has six times more calcium than milk, eight times more omega-3s than salmon, fifteen times more magnesium than broccoli, two times more potassium than bananas and thirty percent more antioxidants than blueberries. Make this delicious pomegranate cacao chia pudding to give the superseed a try.

Event Storyline:
It has been 6 months since the Rayne Corporation initially launched the virus on my hometown of Orion City. I was once a part of the police department's Strategic and Tactical Armed Team or S.T.A.T. I remember the first day of the break out; the community began to get ill and it struck every body like a plague. Initially they sweat with high fever, after that death started rapidly. Everyone believed it was a late-blooming flu up until individuals started perishing promptly . . . and violently. Per government protocol, we called the CDC -- mistake # 1. Mistake # 2: going back to the medical facility to await the CDC representatives and see my daughter.
She was among the very first to get ill, but she was a genuine fighter. I was determined to take a seat and loosen up to the repetitive beeping of her various monitors. As the beeps on her heart machine reduced, I took her clammy hand in mine, trying to feel for the spark of life she once had. I was reaching for the nurse call button when I heard gunfire break out down the hallway. I ran from her room with my gun drawn and found my group shooting at people, that regardless of several gun shot wounds were in some way still approaching my team. Blood sprayed the wall surfaces and floors in thick red, and yet these people kept moving forward with wild fervor in their eyes. They appeared to have one objective-- bite and attack the S.T.A.T. unit.
I swiveled quickly around as I saw a nurse running toward my little girl's area. Seeing that she wasn't conquered with the crazed need to bite, I screamed for her to get in the hospital room and lock herself in with my daughter. The guys of my group that were still standing started to fall back as our dropped brothers were overtaken by the rampaging people. We collected every little thing we can and obstructed the doors in the corridor so absolutely nothing could make it through.
As we finished, I heard a blood-curdling scream originating from my little girl's room. I rushed toward her area, leaving my team behind and tossed my adrenaline-loaded body full force through the door. As I regained equilibrium, I looked to her bed, then down to the flooring only to find out my child was covered in blood. She turned and looked up at me with the registered nurse's internals dangling from her gaping mouth with more crumpled in her hands. She stood up and began to stroll towards me with her arms out as if to grapple me; all with an innocent smile on her face. Fatherly instinct took control of and I was overcome with the desire to hold and comfort her. As I stoop down to take her into my arms, she snapped and lunged at my neck. I pushed her back into the wall and heard a shot ring out behind me as a hole showed up where my daughter's once bright, sparkling face was.
Horrified, I rotated my head around to see a dark figure holding a smoking rifle. He reached his hand out and pulled me to my feet. Before I can thank him and inquire about my team he started to drag me out of the area, hollering, "We need to go. NOW!"
Synopsis of Game play:
You will be placed on the survivor STAT Group or the Rayne Corporation. Each group will have various objectives that must be completed throughout the evening. This is the start of the Z-Wars story and will be proceeded at future lock-ins.
Will you have what it takes to get away from the city?

Valerie Confection’s Blushing Berry Jam
If you've been dilly-dallying about learning to make homemade jam, here is the recipe that will send you over the edge. Rose petals, raspberry liqueur and one of our favorite - and unexpected - inclusions, rhubarb, combine to make this berry spread a recipe we just can't resist whipping together! Follow Valerie as she guides us straight through the ABC's of preserving and fill your kitchen with stacks of these magical and romantic jam jars. Here is the recipe from Valerie, straight from her delectable dessert cookbook, Sweet! The “blush” in this jam is a nod to the generous amount of alcohol it contains. Chambord, a liqueur made of red and black raspberries, vanilla, citrus peel, honey and Cognac, has a pleasing sweetness. Raspberries and rhubarb have tart flavors; here the Chambord softens the acidity, balancing the jam. To make great favors for bridal showers, tie ribbons and hang-tags around jars to personalize them.

Kids In The Kitchen: This Weekend’s Raw Food Workshop
Think the whole raw food diet is over kid's heads? Think again! While sticking to a 100% raw foods diet may be a choice that deserves some deeper thought, including more plant-based raw foods in your family's diet is a no-brainer. We love that among the master-level raw culinary courses at Matthew Kenney Culinary there are also a few fun workshops just for kids. Tucked high above Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade, the glowing marble kitchen classroom at Matthew Kenney Culinary makes for the perfect healthy weekend destination. Students travel from around the world to be taught by Matthew and team, whose ideas about raw food transcend the normal health food status quo. Imagine raw dumplings made from coconut meat and dinner served with foams and sauces that could be found in any five-star restaurant. The raw cooking classes and weekend intensives themselves range from anywhere between beginner's level and high culinary art. We've attended a class or two ourselves and finally learned the perfect way to open a Thai coconut (clearly a beginner's class!). Try this kid-friendly recipe from Everyday Raw Detox for a perfect example of what you might find in an MK Culinary kid's workshop or make a snap decision and gather the little ones up for the Raw Food For Kids workshop happening this Sunday afternoon! This banana carrot chai smoothie is a seasonal holiday favorite – perfect for both kids and adults alike. It is a great way to serve vegetables in disguise! For the less adventurous eater, you can eliminate the spices for a flavor that is simple, sweet and creamy.

We Heart It: Chocolate Hazelnut Dipped Blood Oranges
Our whole team here at The Chalkboard is just the coolest. From our nutrition editor's constant arrival with new supplements to try to our fitness pro's own ass-kicking spin class, we're always learning from each other and discovering new things. So it was no surprise to us when our own site designer, Kate Harmer of Hum Creative (see her studio here,) introduced us to her pal Jane Yuan and her new line of gorgeous, gluten-free "crisps". Simple & Crisp is Jane's stunningly gorgeous line of cracker-alternatives made only from sustainably grown, dried fruit - every healthy home entertainer's dream. With a touch of organic sugar and nothing else, each crisp is simply a wheel of fruit - pear, orange, apple - dried thin and crispy and ready to fill in for crackers on any and every occasion. These little wonders open up a whole new realm of possibilities when it comes to healthy party food: think dried pear crisps topped with blue cheese and walnuts, apple crisps with caramel sauce and crisps of all kinds for cheese plates and wine tastings. We especially loved Jane's blood orange crisps and asked her to whip up something special for Valentine's Day. A pairing from heaven, Jane dipped the Simple & Crisp blood oranges in Rawmio's chocolate hazelnut butter as a sweet surprise for her own Valentine. Simple as spreading a little nut butter on each crisp, this little snack is instantly beautiful and delicious. Try a plateful with a bottle of sustainable champagne and you've got instant romance swagger! Here are a few of the health benefits packed into this healthy treat. Check out what you're getting out of each little bite...
Blood Oranges: If you think the only difference between blood oranges and conventional oranges is their color, think again. Blood oranges contain vitamin C in more concentrated amounts than their conventional counterpart, with as much as two times more vitamin C per cup! Blood oranges also contain the flavonoid, anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are the antioxidant that give these oranges their deep red color, and have shown in research to be neuro-protective and to reduce inflammation levels in the body.
Hazelnuts: While hazelnuts are not the typical nut you reach for when looking to boost your nutrition for the day, they are worth incorporating. Hazelnuts are rich in monounsaturated fats, which help to normalize cholesterol levels, and protect from heart disease. They are also particularly rich in the B vitamin folate, making them a perfect snack for expecting mothers and those dealing with folate-dependent anemia.
Chocolate: Chocolate is a health food in its own right - as long as we are talking about the unrefined version known as cacao. Cacao is one of the highest natural sources of magnesium, which is vital for muscle relaxation and maintaining a calm mood. Containing theobromine, cacao enhances mood and brain function, which is why we so often reach for it after a long, hard days work. Cacao also contains PEA, also known as the "love" chemical, as well as anandamide, a neurotransmitter that creates the feeling of bliss.
