In 2008, Indie Lee’s life changed overnight with a brain tumor diagnosis that doctors believed was environmentally derived. After recovering, she turned her focus to what we put on our skin, creating safe, effective formulas in her own kitchen. That was the beginning of her namesake brand, INDIE LEE.

Since then, the brand has grown into a trusted destination for clean, conscious skincare, and Indie herself has become a voice for living with intention. In our conversation, she shares the rituals that keep her grounded, from twice-daily meditation to her go-to CoQ-10 Toner, along with the products she loves, the podcasts and books that inspire her, and the lessons she’s learned about resilience, presence, and what it really means to live well.

Indie Lee founderINDIE LEE is widely considered one of the first clean beauty brands. Did you have any sense back then that you were creating a movement that would change the beauty industry? When I started INDIE LEE, I wasn’t setting out to create a movement. Creating products that were safe, effective, and aligned with my personal commitment to health and wellness was my primary focus. After surviving my first life-threatening brain surgery, I became laser-focused on living with intention, especially when it came to what I was putting on and in my body.

I had no idea it would grow into a movement or help spark such a profound shift in the beauty industry. My motivation came from a genuine need. I wanted to empower people to be mindful of what they put on their skin, just as they are with what they eat.

What did “clean beauty” mean to you when you started and how do you feel the definition has evolved since then? In the beginning, clean beauty was about formulating without known toxins and questionable ingredients. It was deeply personal for me. Clean beauty meant creating products that were good for you without harming the environment.

Since then, the term has expanded and at times been diluted. Today, I believe clean beauty needs some standardization, as it can mean different things to individual consumers and retailers, creating confusion for the end user. I’m proud to have helped push for more mindful beauty, but the industry still has work to do. 

indie leeSustainability is clearly embedded in your packaging and sourcing. What’s one green initiative, maybe one no one sees, that you’re currently most excited about? For me, sustainability is about progress and mindfulness. I am excited about the behind-the-scenes work we are doing. We are looking at everything from packaging choices to responsible sourcing, always asking how we can do better without compromising performance or experience. It is often the small, less visible steps, like where an ingredient is sourced or what paper stock we might choose, and those changes add up to create real impact over time.

What’s your skincare ritual in the morning? My mornings always start with our Brightening Cleanser. It is refreshing, uplifting, and gives me the perfect reset. Then I sweep on the CoQ-10 Toner, which feels like a mini spa moment and preps my skin beautifully. From there, I layer in our Vitamin C Serum for radiance, followed by the Stem Cell Serum and Retinol Alternative Cream to support hydration, firmness, and overall skin health. I finish with the Daily SPF Primer because protecting your skin is non-negotiable, and this one doubles as the perfect base for makeup.

When you need a little motivation, what’s your favorite podcast or book to revisit? I always find motivation in The Doctor’s Farmacy by Dr. Mark Hyman. His perspective on health and longevity keeps me grounded and curious. And The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is a book I reread every year. It reminds me to trust the journey, follow my intuition, and believe in the beauty of transformation at every stage of life.

Indie LeeIs there one small wellness practice that has been non-negotiable through your toughest chapters? I have meditated twice a day, morning and evening, for over ten years. It is a small habit that reshapes my perspective in the most powerful way. I also make time for daily walks in nature, no matter how brief. Those moments of fresh air and movement keep me grounded and connected, even during the busiest or most challenging times.

What does Living Well mean to you right now? Living well means being present, purposeful, and nurturing. Not just nurturing myself, but also my family, community, and the planet. It is about making mindful choices, celebrating progress instead of perfection, and cherishing the small rituals that bring joy every day.

Right now, living well means embracing simplicity and intention. It is about creating a life of what I call Wellth™, which is an abundance of health and wellness. It means redefining what wellness looks like as I continue to heal and grow, and sharing that journey authentically with my community.

Mindful movement has always been at the heart of my Brooke Burke BODY philosophy. My app was created with every woman in mind and designed for all of us at every stage and every fitness level. The Body Blueprint retreat at CIVANA is an invitation to come home to the most intimate places within. In this series, we explore movement, energy, longevity, self-confidence, and inner strength. Each modality is designed to empower participants to tap into their fullest potential and to leave with tools they can integrate into everyday life.

In your view, what’s the biggest misconception people have about living a “healthy lifestyle”? The biggest misconception is believing there’s a one-size-fits-all solution. There isn’t a universal theory of wellness—healthy living looks different for everyone. I encourage people to become detectives of their own bodies and to discover what rituals, practices, and rhythms support them best. Instead of rigid “lifestyles,” I believe in creating rituals—gifts we give ourselves daily. Through our workshops, panels, and shared discussions, we explore many different pathways to well-being, giving participants the freedom to design a personal practice that’s sustainable and authentic.

CIVANA calls itself a “playground of wellbeing.” How does that description align with the way you see wellness? CIVANA truly embodies that vision. It’s a playground for self-care—and self-care is the ultimate act of self-love. From expert-led classes and unique desert activations to mindful cuisine and their incredible aqua therapy circuit, it’s a space that nurtures every aspect of wellness. The Sonoran Desert has an energy that ignites my spirit, and the labyrinth at CIVANA is one of my favorites in the world. For me, CIVANA feels like home—both grounding and expansive, offering the perfect landscape for transformation.

Your Body Blueprint Retreat is designed around self-prioritization and grounded renewal. Can you share what inspired this theme and what participants can expect? The theme is inspired by the journey back to self. Life is filled with road signs, detours, peaks, and valleys. I believe we each carry an inner roadmap and toolkit that can guide us through these adventures. The Body Blueprint retreat at CIVANA helps participants access that inner navigation system—to identify their true north, to embrace possibility, and to approach life with renewed clarity. Guests can expect immersive practices, reflective workshops, and empowering conversations that invite them to lighten their load and rediscover their path.

CIVANA wellness retreat You’ve called this retreat a “restorative pause.” What does that mean to you personally? There comes a time in everyone’s life when we need to hit pause. For me, that pause is about slowing down, listening inward, and creating space for self-discovery. It’s about interrupting the chaos to reboot our system. In stillness, we can hear the body’s wisdom and connect to the language of our nervous system. I believe that if you think you don’t have time for self-care, you actually don’t have time not to.

On days when you’re pressed for time, what’s the one ritual you always make space for? Meditation. Even just ten minutes in the morning changes everything—it brings clarity, elevates my energy, and improves productivity. I like to rise with the sun whenever possible, and I give myself permission to rest when my body asks for it. That daily practice of listening and aligning with natural rhythms has been a cornerstone of my wellness journey.

This is the first in a series of retreats. How do you see CIVANA growing with you as your blueprint for retreats evolves? I’m deeply excited about this ongoing partnership with CIVANA. Each retreat is an opportunity to learn from our community and to refine programming around their needs and desires. While every retreat will be unique, the common thread will always be helping people find their “feel good” and improve their overall well-being. I see this series evolving into a journey we take together—expanding, adapting, and deepening with each experience.

If you could share just one philosophy or mindset shift that’s changed your life, what would it be? There is incredible strength in the pause. Strength in surrender. Strength in the boundaries we set, in the commitments we honor, and in the dialogue we cultivate with ourselves. My Feminine Strength Theory has reshaped the way I think about both wellness and fitness: true strength isn’t about force—it’s about knowing when to surrender, when to reset, and when to carve out time for self.

The 5-Second Tick That Stops Overthinking in Its Tracks

We all have those moments where our brain talks us out of the very thing we know we should do. You want to get up when the alarm rings, but somehow you’re still in bed. You mean to speak up in the meeting, but the words don’t come out. You think about starting the workout, writing the email, or making the call—then suddenly you’re scrolling Instagram instead.

I tried Mel Robbins’ 5-Second Rule on a Monday morning when I could not get myself moving. Instead of bargaining with myself for “just five more minutes,” I counted down—5-4-3-2-1—and swung my legs out of bed. It wasn’t glamorous, but it worked. And that’s the point: it’s not about motivation, it’s about momentum.

So, What Is the 5-Second Rule?

It’s as basic as it sounds. The instant you feel hesitation creeping in, you count backwards—5-4-3-2-1—and move. That’s it. 

Why It Actually Works

It’s not magic—it’s neuroscience. Counting down interrupts the mental loop of excuses and taps the part of your brain that’s wired for focus and decision-making. By the time you hit “1,” you’ve already shifted gears from overthinking to action.

It’s like giving your brain a push out the door before it can talk you into staying home.

How to Use It in Real Life

The beauty of the 5-Second Rule is that it works in all the tiny (and not-so-tiny) moments where hesitation sneaks in:

+ When the alarm goes off: Instead of scrolling or bargaining with yourself, count down and get up before your excuses do.

+ When you’re about to chicken out: Speak up in the meeting, send the text, ask the question. 5-4-3-2-1—say it.

+ When motivation is nowhere to be found: Don’t wait for the “perfect” mood to strike. Count down and put on your sneakers, open the laptop, or chop the vegetables. Action creates motivation, not the other way around.

From her early days as a pilates instructor to now leading the world’s largest pilates brand, Tianna Strateman’s path has been anything but ordinary. As President of Club Pilates, she’s navigated the delicate balance between wellness and business, helping shape a global movement while staying deeply rooted in the practice that first transformed her own life. Along the way, she’s learned lessons about leadership, resilience, and the power of meeting people exactly where they are—on and off the mat. We sat down with Tianna to talk about her evolution as a leader, her personal relationship with Pilates, and why she believes this modality resonates so profoundly with women at every stage of life.

Living Well with Tianna Strateman

Club Pilates studioFrom instructor to president of the world’s largest Pilates brand—that’s quite a journey. What have been the most surprising lessons along the way, especially as a woman leading in the fitness space? The most surprising lesson has been realizing that the variety of experiences you collect throughout your path and career all serve a purpose, even if you don’t see it at the time. Certain experiences or lessons often teach you something valuable, but it can be difficult to reflect on their impact when you’re in the thick of it. Whether it was working as an instructor and witnessing firsthand the impact you can have on people’s lives or stepping into the business side of things and bringing a female perspective to a historically male-dominated industry, every moment has mattered. 

Another important lesson I’ve learned is that no one has all the answers—we're all figuring things out as we go. As my journey has unfolded, I’ve come to understand that leadership is deeply rooted in human connection. Early on, I believed that being a great leader meant always knowing what to do. But over time, I discovered that leading with empathy, self-awareness, and genuine intention has a far greater impact. By showing up as my authentic self and focusing on supporting the people around me, I’ve found that I can lead more effectively—and more meaningfully. It’s a privilege to be able to do work that I’m deeply passionate about.

How has your personal relationship with Pilates evolved through the years? I began practicing Pilates at a young age in a physical therapy setting while rehabilitating a dance injury. It became a key part of addressing my imbalances and weaknesses, ultimately helping me perform better. From the start, what I loved most about Pilates was how dynamic and varied it was—it allowed my body to move in all directions, which is essential not only for dance but for everyday life. Since then, Pilates has been a constant presence through every stage of my journey. Whether I was focused on being in great shape, navigating pregnancy, or recovering postpartum, it always met me exactly where I was. That adaptability and support are what make this practice so uniquely powerful. I truly aspire to being a lifelong practitioner, as I can clearly see how Pilates will continue to support me as I move through each season of life.

You oversee a brand where wellness and business intersect daily. Have you ever had to make a decision that felt good from a mission-driven standpoint but risky from a business lens? How did you navigate that? Early on in my career with Club Pilates, it was really important to me to maintain our 500-hour Pilates education as the gold standard across the brand. It would have been much easier (and faster), to lower those requirements and offer a weekend-long certification process in order to scale and grow quickly. However, it was important to ensure our instructors were deeply skilled professionals. That level of preparation is core to offering the best possible member experience, and staying true to those roots was a mission-driven choice, even though it may have been challenging from a business growth standpoint. 

What’s one leadership lesson you learned the hard way—and how has it shaped the way you mentor others? One of the most valuable leadership lessons I’ve learned is that striving for perfection isn’t sustainable—or necessary. I still have very high expectations for myself and those around me, but I’ve come to understand the importance of giving myself grace, and I try to mentor others with that same mindset. We have a very talented, driven team and I encourage people to lead with authenticity, embrace their imperfections, and focus on showing up as their best selves. Letting go of perfection has allowed me to grow not just as a leader and mentor, but as a person. 

Another powerful lesson has been learning to give my team the space to think independently, solve problems, and even make mistakes. It’s a big shift—from being hands-on with every detail to stepping back and trusting others to lead. At first, it was hard to let go. But I’ve realized that real growth—for both myself and the team—only happens when I focus on supporting, empowering, and nurturing those around me.

Club PilatesYou often talk about Pilates as a lifelong movement system. Why do you think it resonates so deeply with women, especially through different life stages like pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause? I can personally attest to how Pilates has supported me during each unique phase of my life - from dancing, to pregnancy, to postpartum recovery, and onward. I’ve also seen it in my friends, my family, and the many Club Pilates members who share testimonials with us. No matter what stage of life they’re in, the common thread is that Pilates has a way of meeting people exactly where they are, which speaks to the longevity and power of the modality. One of the most unique things about Pilates is that it can be customized. There are progressions and regressions for every body, every posture, and every goal. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach, and that’s exactly why it’s such an effective, lifelong tool for people, and especially women, navigating all kinds of transitions. 

Do you have any non-negotiables in your daily routine that keep you balanced?Absolutely—there are a few non-negotiables in my daily routine that help keep me grounded and balanced. Eating healthy, nourishing food is a big one. Whether it’s meal prepping ahead of time or choosing the healthiest option on a menu, fueling my body well is essential—especially on long desk-bound days.

I also make a conscious effort to carve out a bit of “me” time. It’s not always easy, but I’ve learned that even small moments count. That might look like a walk on the beach, a few deep breaths in the car, or a short meditation—whatever helps me reconnect and stay present. The days move quickly, and without those moments, it’s easy to feel uncentered.

Time with my family is another key source of balance, no matter how hectic the day gets. And on a practical level, I stick to small daily habits that support my overall well-being: taking the stairs, parking a little farther away to get extra steps in, staying consistent with my supplements and hydration, and keeping up with my skincare and wellness routines. These little rituals really add up and help me stay aligned, inside and out.

What’s a misconception about Pilates that you’re constantly trying to shift—and what do you wish more women understood about their bodies through this lens? The biggest misconception I hear is that Pilates is easy. People often think you need to “feel the burn” or be incredibly sore to believe you had a great workout, but that’s just one element of fitness! Pilates emphasizes mobility, stretching, strength training, and movement through all planes of motion, all of which are foundational to everyday functional living. These components may not always leave you sore, but they are deeply beneficial for all aspects of life. At Club Pilates, we truly believe Pilates is for every body, which is a huge part of what makes our environment so inclusive. We meet people where they’re at and rely on our instructors to provide the proper modifications. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, and Pilates is an incredible way to tailor your movement and help support your body for many years to come. 

Is there a piece of wellness advice you once believed that you’ve since let go of? I used to believe that in order to get results, you had to be perfect 100% of the time. But since becoming a mom, I’ve learned that consistency, diligence, and giving yourself a little grace go much further. As I mentioned earlier, I’ve shifted toward a more flexible approach to wellness—one that leaves room for real life. That means not beating myself up if I miss a workout or end up eating my kid’s leftovers for dinner. Sometimes, the best choice is hitting snooze and getting an extra hour of sleep because your body needs it. To me, learning to listen to my body and make intuitive decisions is a big part of holistic wellness.

How do you protect your peace in a world that’s constantly demanding your time, energy, and attention?
A constant work in progress, I do my best to intentionally schedule moments that bring me peace. If I don’t protect that time and prioritize it on my calendar, it’s far too easy for it to disappear. Whether it’s extra time with my kids, a Pilates class, walking my dog, a date night with my husband, or simply doing something that feels meaningful to me—if it’s on the calendar, I’m much more likely to follow through. Having an organized schedule gives me a sense of calm and removes a lot of the daily guesswork.

I’m also mindful of the kind of content I consume and the energy I allow into my space. Protecting my mental space by curating what surrounds me—whether it's digital noise or emotional energy—has become a key part of maintaining my overall well-being. 

Do you have a mantra or internal phrase you return to in moments of doubt or burnout—something that brings you back home to yourself? “What’s my why?” I always come back to my why. It’s so important for me to remember that my passion is helping people bring Pilates and overall wellness into their lives. This practice has had such a positive impact on my own life, and I’ve seen it positively transform the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of others. Everything I do is for my family - remembering that helps center me and keep me moving forward. 

 Wellness has become a buzzword—but what does it genuinely mean to you on a personal level? For me, wellness is about the intention behind everything you do to feel your best and live your best life. It’s what I consume, whether it’s food, hydration, a great glass of wine, or media. It’s how I move, through Pilates and other activity choices. It’s also what I do for myself, whether proactively or reactively. It could be acupuncture, an infrared sauna, red light therapy, or trying out new wellness hacks that support me on my personal journey. It could also be one of the main principles of Pilates, remembering to breathe! Wellness as a whole also means sharing that knowledge with others. It brings me immense joy to help people make small shifts that lead to big impacts in their daily lives. Ultimately, it’s about living the happiest, healthiest, longest life possible - and wanting that for the people I care about most, too.

The Summer Salad That Doubles as the Perfect Picnic Sandwich

Inspired bY a seaside lunch in Southampton, this hearty, farm-stand-fresh salad is the kind of recipe Beth Le Manach does best—easy, elegant, and straight from her cookbook Entertaining 101: 101 Recipes Every Host Should Know How to Make. With tender potatoes, juicy fruit, savory bites of meat, and a salty crunch from pistachios or candied pecans, it’s practically a meal on its own. Beth loves serving it tucked into slices of pumpernickel with Bibb lettuce and heirloom tomatoes, but it’s just as perfect packed up for a beach day—especially if you add a few of her Dangerously Delicious Chocolate Chip Cookies or Better-Than-Box Brownies for dessert.

SERVES 6 TO 8

CHICKEN SALAD

11⁄2 pounds (680 g) bone-in, skin-on chicken breasts (about 2 breasts; see Note 1)
Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper
1 pound (454 g) red baby new potatoes (see Note 2)
3⁄4 cup (180 g) sour cream
1⁄4 cup (55 g) mayonnaise
2 teaspoons (10 ml) Dijon mustard
1⁄4 cup (60 ml) chopped fresh dill
1⁄4 cup (60 ml) chopped fresh tarragon
Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
11⁄2 cups (235 g) red grapes, halved lengthwise
1 cup (122 g) raw pistachios, shelled (see Note 3)

SANDWICHES

8 leaves Bibb lettuce
2 medium ripe heirloom tomatoes, cut into 8 slices
Sliced rustic bread (such as pumpernickel, hearty whole wheat, or sourdough)

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the oven rack in the lower third of the oven. Line a baking sheet with foil.

2. Make the salad: Season the chicken, under the skin, with salt and pepper.

3. Roast the chicken on the baking sheet for 45 minutes, until cooked through. Set aside to cool.

4. Meanwhile, boil the potatoes in a large pot of water until fork-tender, 10 to 15 minutes. Drain and let cool. Cut the potatoes into quarters and set aside.

5. Whisk the sour cream, mayonnaise, and mustard in a large bowl. Add the dill, tarragon, salt, and pepper. Set aside.

6. Remove the chicken skin. Use two forks to shred the chicken meat into long bite-size pieces, removing the meat from the bones.

7. Add the chicken, potatoes, grapes, and pistachios to the bowl, and toss to coat in the dressing. Check for seasoning, adding more salt or pepper as desired.

8. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Place a big scoop on a Bibb lettuce leaf for a dainty lunch, or prepare sandwiches by placing lettuce, tomato slices, and chicken salad on sliced bread and take them to the beach.

NOTES

1. To make this recipe even quicker, you can use 2 cups (705 g) shredded store-bought rotisserie chicken.

2. I leave the skin on the potatoes for a more colorful salad and a bit more texture.

3. Look for raw, shelled pistachios at Trader Joe’s or your local Mediterranean market.

MAKE-AHEAD GAME PLAN

This salad is best made a few hours before serving. However, if you would like to make it a day ahead, it’s better to prepare all the components, place them in a bowl minus the dressing, and refrigerate. Toss in the dressing a few hours before serving: That way, the salad won’t dry out.
