New Year’s Eve with Julia Sherman of Jus Jus + Salad For President

Got a bottle of bubbles in the fridge for a New Year's weekend at home? Sorry for the late notice, but we've got something better: a bottle of low ABV sparkling verjus called Jus Jus made by Salad For President's Julia Sherman and natural winemaker Martha Stoumen.

Jus Jus is in it's second release, available in two variations, Jus Jus: Day (3.5% ABV), and Jus Jus: Night (7% ABV), both made from organic Chardonnay and muscat Blanc grapes, fermented in the style of a Pét-Nat. It's great for day drinking, but also, a great way to lower your alcohol consumption while still enjoying all that is so special about a beautiful bottle of bubbles.

Name: Julia Sherman

What I do: Creator/Author of Salad for President, Creative director, and Founder of Jus Jus Verjus

This NYE I'll be drinking... Jus Jus Spritz! Pour Jus Jus over ice with a spritz of grapefruit and a splash of soda. Have two, you won't feel it the next day.

Sweats or sequins this year on NYE? How about we split the difference and just wear something with a waistline?

Tasting notes for Jus Jus in 3 words: Floral, with an after taste of ripe stonefruit, all delivered on the world's most delicate bubble.

What's a pet nat for those who don't know (we're obsessed)? Pét- Nat is short for the French "pétillant-naturel," and is basically a traditional method for making sparkling wine that uses wild yeast and no additives. (Grape skins are naturally coated in wild yeast. We don't wash the grapes before crushing them, so it's super important that the fruit be organically grown!).

The wine goes into the bottle with sugar still present in the juice. As long as there is sugar and wild yeast in one contained ecosystem, fermentation will occur spontaneously. As it ferments, Co2 bubbles are produced and trapped inside the bottle. The pressure of the Co2 is what both stops the fermentation from continuing indefinitely, but it is also what gives Pét-Nat its signature sparkle.

Go-to NYE recipes/dishes: Braised leg of lamb tacos with persimmon pickles. (Editor's note: um, wow!)

We're big believers in extravagance and fun details even when home just one or two.
What are some of your favorite details along those lines?
I love to make a pretty table using things I can find around the house, the garden, or the neighborhood. I take clippers with me on walks, and grab citrus branches, Fall foliage, fallen palm fronds, and make big dramatic floral arrangements. I use fresh produce to decorate my table, nestling cracked open pomegranates in with a cluster of tea lights, floating

What's helped keep you most sane this year? Besides a bottle or two of Jus Jus? I honestly just haven't had time to lose it! I have been retreating to novels as a form of comfort late at night (choosing that over mindless TV is really helpful for my sleep and my self esteem!). Some highlights include: Fierce Attachments by Vivian Gornick, Nobody Will Tell You This But Me by Bess Kalb, More Home Cooking by Laurie Colwin, and The Friend by Sigrid Nunez.

What would you normally be doing on NYE? Honestly, at this point in my life, I would normally just be cooking an extravagant meal for another couple, indulging in some ridiculous grocery purchases like oysters, or uni, or trout roe to make it all feel like a treat. I have never been much of a thrill seeker when it comes to New Year's -- I prefer to make the average night feel special than live up to the expectations of the holiday.

And this year's plans? My parents are our "pod," so I think we will make a fancy meal and be in bed by 12:01am.

Tell us about your recipe spread: Since the pandemic, I have been REALLY into my ingredient sourcing, even more than normal. My food has gotten simpler, as I just want to taste exactly what I am working with.

I love to pair Jus Jus with delicate seafood, like raw, high quality scallops. It brings out their sweetness. I am slicing the scallops as thinly as possible, seasoning them with some Meyer lemon and very fancy olive oil, and a sprinkling of flakey sea salt, that's all! Then, I am chipping away at some aged parmigiano-reggiano, and serving that with sticky, gushy California dates.

Here's how to become a complete natural wine geek. LEARN MORE

How Fitness Changed In 2020 + 8 Fitness Trends To Expect In 2021

Krissy Jones and Chloe Kernaghan are SkyTing yoga, one of NYC's coolest yoga studios and hosts of the digital yoga platform, Sky Ting TV.

Unless you were already working out solo at home in 2019 or are one of those lone wolf runner types (which we can appreciate), you know personally just how much fitness has changed in 2020. Classes were cancelled, booking workouts around town on an app was not an option, and hot yoga was unthinkable. Some studios moved outdoors, while many big box gyms were forced to close their doors altogether for months at a time.

Two areas of the fitness industry thrived: digitally streaming workout programs and at-home fitness equipment. With all of us at home and keeping a safe distance, more of us worked out at home and that trend is nowhere near slowing down in the coming year.

We asked Krissy and Chloe to tell us what they think is up next in fitness after maneuvering through one of the wildest years in the fitness industry themselves...

workouts will be Shorter & Sweeter  “We’re getting a lot of feedback that it’s difficult to do one hour classes online. Shorter, snackable classes are more accessible for people’s schedules and online attention spans.” - Krissy

fitness is becoming more inclusive “People who were once intimidated to join an in-person group yoga class can now learn online from the comfort of their homes. In this way, yoga is becoming more inclusive.” - Krissy

fitness is going Family style “We’re seeing a lot of people practicing with their parents, kids, and even grandparents! I think we’ll be seeing a lot more classes online geared towards the whole family.” - Krissy

Affordable Access becomes crucial “Online monthly subscriptions are much more affordable than the cost of brick and mortar studio classes (at least in NYC!). This means more people can access and commit to a regular practice.

"We’ve been playing with tiered pricing in our higher ticket items like trainings and courses to continue to make offerings more accessible. We hope to see this mindset across the board with wellness platforms.” - Chloe

restorative workouts are non-negotiable  “I think people are becoming smarter with their workout programs and realizing the value of adding restorative classes to their routines. I feel like rest and recovery classes will gain more popularity in 2021, like restorative yoga, breathwork, and foam rolling.” - Krissy

providing Structure “We’ve released a few “series” of classes geared around a theme and regularly see higher interaction and attendance those weeks. We think people are craving guidance in the online fitness world (maybe other streaming platforms’ suggested video option has trained our brains), and when you give them a plan for what they should do when, they’re more willing to commit!” - Chloe

fitness moves to Audio  “A lot of our students say they do not look at the screen when doing our classes, they simply listen to the audio. Screen fatigue is a real thing and we think wellness brands will be adapting their content to have an audio only option.” - Krissy

anti-anxiety fitness We’re getting a lot of requests for classes to battle anxiety. More people are starting regular meditation and breathwork practices, so we’ll be keeping this in mind as we build our library of classes in 2021” - Krissy

How has fitness changed for you in 2020? How do think you'll be working out in 2021?

All About The Full Moon in Cancer December 2020

MARIAH K. LYONS is a crystal healer, meditation guide and reiki master based in Los Angeles, CA. She is the founder of the luxury grounding company, ASTARA and author of newly published Crystal Healing for Women. On Tuesday, December 29 there is a full moon in Cancer and Mariah is unfolding the astrological significance for us here...

SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE…  We have moved out of eclipse season and are entering the new energy of a new numerical calendar year. This Full Moon, called the Cold Moon, in Cancer, is offering an opportunity for us to cleanse all that we no longer need to bring into the new year and listen to our own intuitive guidance on what we deeply desire to experience in 2021 and the future moving forward.

The sign of Cancer is ruled by the Moon, governing intuition, emotions and the feminine essence, which is not gender specific but instead energetic in nature. Coming off of a potent Jupiter + Saturn Grand Junction on Winter Solstice, this Full Moon presents a wonderful time for deep reflection, self-care and nurturing dreams, desires and new ways of experiencing the world.

OVERALL THEMES TO EXPLORE… Introspection. Intuition. Nurturing.

Get quiet and look within yourself. Are there certain messages or intuitive nudges you have been ignoring or overlooking? Perhaps dreams and desires that are waiting to be explored? This moon is a potent window to listen to our hearts and intuition to nurture our dreams for the future.

Give yourself ample time this week for introspection and self-healing to release stored emotions and integrate lessons from this past year. There might have been structures in your life (family, career, finances, relationships, etc) or emotional triggers that were shaken up during the last month of eclipses and you might even find that you feel like a whole new version of yourself now. 2020 was historic, so honor and celebrate all that you have moved through and overcome this past year.

Welcome the new energy of this new year and a new evolution of you.

YOU MAY be FEELing… Creative, sensitive, emotional.

With watery Cancer you might feel your sensitivities heightened or feel as if your emotions are right at the surface. While this may feel overwhelming to some, enhanced sensitivities are a gift and can be utilized to greatly fuel creativity and connect more intimately to the natural world around you.

it's an EXCELLENT TIME TO…  Spend time in nature, rest, meditate, journal, take a ritual mineral + herb bath, create a vision board and allow the energies of this moon to support you in clearing the past and allowing for space to listen to your inner desires.

Work with the cleansing element of water through an herbal ritual bath, a visit to a body of water (ocean, lake, river, stream etc.) or simply a hot shower to help release stored emotions and connect to your creativity and feminine essence. My book Crystal Healing for Women contains a potent meditation called “Awakening Your Intuition Ritual” that is highly supportive for tuning into your intuition.

JOURNALING PROMPT… What is a dream I am ready to bring to fruition? How can I nurture that dream with tangible, practical steps? What have I learned this year? What can I let go of? What do I need to nurture in my life to support my highest expression of self? What do I desire to create for myself and the world around me in 2021?

Healthcare Starts In The Fridge: At Home with Nutritionist Brigid Titgemeier

Food is the most incredible gift that has been given to us by nature as a way to feed our cells, improve functionality, create health and decrease our dependence on disease management.

"Healthcare starts in your refrigerator, not necessarily in your doctor’s office."

How you choose to vote with your fork and dollar for every single meal matters more than you can even imagine. The foods that we purchase are the best way for us to take a stand for the health of our bodies, regenerative farmers that support soil quality, organic foods, and nutrient dense, colorful produce. How we stock our kitchens is an opportunity to change the state of our health and support those who are creating necessary change in the world!

Your needs and preferences won't necessarily look like mine, but I’m honored to be able to share some of my favorite kitchen staples!

ALWAYS IN MY FRIDGE: Sauerkraut or kimchi (love feeding my gut microbiome), fresh ginger root, wild salmon (I store this in the freezer and move to fridge to thaw), broccoli sprouts, quality condiments, broccoli or cauliflower, rainbow chard, dairy-free creamers, blueberries, greek almond yogurt, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, ground flax seeds, and brazil nuts.

These are staples but I am a big proponent of switching things up and getting varied food sources to help increase the diversity of your gut microbiome.

7 RECIPE STAPLES ALWAYS ON HAND: Extra virgin olive oil, citrus (lemons & limes), tahini, liquid aminos or tamari sauce, garlic, eggs, redmond real salt

MUST-HAVE MUNCHIES: I love crunchy and salty snacks! Pumpkin seeds; gluten-free crackers and hummus (we actually don’t have any gluten in our house because of my gluten intolerance); grass-fed beef sticks or venison sticks; lupini beans; olives; and roasted chickpeas.

FAVE CONDIMENTS: Buffalo sauce--especially Primal Kitchen Buffalo Sauce! I pour it on everything I eat. I try to avoid vegetable oils in all condiments (ie: sunflower oil, safflower oil, soybean oil, corn oil, etc.) so I love that this buffalo sauce does not contain those.

INGREDIENT THAT MAKES EVERYTHING BETTER: Fresh ginger or almond butter--not necessarily together but it’s too hard to pick just one!

FAVE VEGGIE: Broccoli sprouts are the best because they are so easy to make and also easy to add to foods to enhance the nutrient density and get a big burst of sulforaphane in a small dose! I also love rainbow chard, especially the crunchiness of the stems! Since rainbow chard includes several different colors, it packs in a variety of phytochemicals, in addition to tasting delicious!

GO-TO PROTEINS:

Venison sticks (from a deer hunted by my husband)
Organic turkey deli slices
Canned sardines
Wild salmon
Lentils
Lupini beans
Grass-fed whey protein powder

BEST LABEL-READING TIP: Take a food is medicine approach to label reading, which means consider the nutrient richness of the food you are purchasing. This makes the caloric information less important. Focus on the micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), real colors (nature-derived), dietary fiber, proteins and healthy fats that are included in the product.

DAIRY OR NON-DAIRY FAVES: I love Primal Kitchen Vegan Ranch & Lemon Turmeric Dressing on salads, Nut Pods in my matcha green tea, and Kite Hill Unsweetened Greek Yogurt.

SKIP LABELS THAT READ...Include a lot of added sugars, vegetable oils, artificial colors and flavors, partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, enriched flours, artificial sweeteners and chemical additives (carrageenan, potassium bromate or calcium bromate, etc.).

FAVORITE SPLURGE:Dark chocolate with nut butter! We occasionally make gluten-free chocolate chip cookies and my banana bread recipe. Sometimes we will buy a cashew cream ice cream and occasionally I love getting frozen custard! I generally love all things peanut butter and dark chocolate!

FOR LAST MINUTE ENTERTAINING:
My Kale Pear & Lemon Chicken Salad is our go to. I also bring this salad to cookouts (minus the chicken) and always get tons of requests for the recipe!

FAVE PLACES TO SHOP: Local Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program and farmers markets (although you always have to be careful and ask where the farm is located because sometimes the produce at farmers markets comes from the same farms you will find in the grocery store). I also love Thrive Market, Butcher's Box, Nuts.com and Trader Joe’s.

SIMPLE GO-TO RECIPE: Chocolate Chia Seed Pudding! This is the easiest recipe and we make it every single week and keep a big batch in our fridge!

Marshmallows + Fudge For A Healthy Hot Chocolate Charcuterie Board

No matter your mood currently, these three recipes will lift your spirits into full-on holiday mode. Grain-free author and blogger, Danielle Walker shared all three of these festive dessert recipes with us which can be made on their own or combined as part of a hot chocolate 'charcuterie' board.

This year is all about taking the little holiday rituals we have at home to the max. And that includes hot chocolate.

Consider gathering together a stash of the ultimate ingredients to make a celebration out of one of everyone's favorite little holiday moments. Start with Danielle's homemade marshmallows and her healthy hot chocolate recipe. Stack some mugs and lay out a board with cinnamon sticks and clean candy canes for stirring, plus beautiful and indulgent extras like dehydrated raspberries, a mini pitcher of extra almond milk, Hu chocolate barsin chunks andHella hazelnut spread.

Old-Fashioned Marshmallows

Ingredients

2 to 3 tablespoons arrowroot powder, for coating (omit for SCD)

1 cup water

3 tablespoons unflavored gelatin powder (such as Vital Proteins – green canister)

1 cup light-colored raw honey

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spread 1 tablespoon of the arrowroot evenly over the parchment to cover.

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, or using an electric handheld mixer, pour 1⁄2 cup of the water and sprinkle the gelatin over the top. Allow the gelatin to bloom, or absorb the water, for 10 minutes.

Combine the remaining 1⁄2 cup water and the honey in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and boil for 15 minutes, or until a candy thermometer reads 240°F.

Turn the mixer on low, and with it running, slowly pour the hot honey syrup down the side of the bowl. Once it is all poured in, increase the speed of the mixer to medium-high and beat for 8 to 10 minutes. e mixture will turn from brown to white and triple in volume.

Turn the marshmallow crème out into the prepared baking sheet and smooth with a spatula. You will need to work quickly here, before the marshmallow starts to set. Allow to cool and set at room temperature for 6 hours.

Rub the top of the marshmallows all over with 1 tablespoon of the arrowroot powder. Lightly grease a sharp knife with coconut oil and slice the marshmallow into 24 pieces. If the marshmallows are still sticky, toss the pieces gently in the remaining 1 tablespoon arrowroot to coat them. Serve immediately.

Healthyish Chocolate Fudge

Ingredients:

1 cup pure maple syrup

½ cup coconut sugar

¼ cup expeller-pressed coconut oil or ghee

1 cup raw cashew butter

6 tablespoons arrowroot powder

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

½ teaspoon fine sea salt

12 ounces unsweetened baking chocolate (100% cacao chopped)

Instructions

Line a 9 by 13−inch baking dish with parchment paper and leave flaps hanging over the side of the dish for easy removal.

In a saucepan over medium−low heat, combine the maple syrup, coconut sugar, and coconut oil. Stir until the coconut sugar melts and the mixture is liquid, about 5 minutes. Whisk in the cashew butter, arrowroot powder, vanilla, salt, and chocolate and continue stirring over low heat until the chocolate melts and everything is well blended, about 5 minutes more.

Pour the fudge into the prepared baking dish and smooth the top with a rubber spatula. Chill in the refrigerator until set, about 6 hours. Cut into squares and serve.

Vanilla Bean Hot Cocoa

Ingredients

2 cups unsweetened almond milk

1 can coconut milk

1 vanilla bean, split the long way

3 ounces dark chocolate (I used 85%)

2 tablespoons cocoa powder

¼ cup honey

Instructions

  1. Place the almond milk, coconut milk and vanilla bean in a saucepan. Bring to a boil then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain then return the milk back to the pan.
  2. Turn the heat to low and whisk in the chocolate, cocoa powder and honey. Heat for 5 minutes, whisking occasionally, until the chocolate is melted and the hot chocolate is thick and creamy.

5 Stages To Discover Your Dharma with Author Sahara Rose

Like so many wellness experts we know this year, Ayurvedic expert Sahara Rose is taking her message deeper than ever before.

While our first convos with Sahara focused on evening tonics, vegan dinners, and ancient beauty solutions, her new book Discover Your Dharma: A Vedic Guide to Finding Your Purpose has us talking life purpose and self-discovery...

Through my podcast, Highest Self Podcast, I have interviewed hundreds of people on their journey towards discovering their dharma (purpose), and found a common thread. They all go through what I call the Dharma Discovery Journey and I saw this echoed in my own. They’re broken down into 5 stages, which I outline in my book.

5 Stages To Discover Your Dharma

Stage 1: Self-awareness

You realize there has to be more to this life than what you’ve been living. You know that you have a purpose but no idea what it is. Frankly, you don’t even know where to start. It feels like you’ve been placed in this life with no choice and simply can’t go on living this way. You know you need a radical change. Through pain or numbness, you are called to take action and transform your life. This is where the seed of dharma is planted.

Stage 2: Self-improvement

You make it a mission to improve yourself. You may begin practicing yoga asana, following inspirational people on Instagram, reading self-help books, listening to motivational speakers, using a meditation app, You’re begin changing habits that are no longer serving you. This stage is focused on the physical and mental level, more than the soul level. This is where the seed of dharma is watered.

Stage 3: Awakening

Your interest shifts from improving yourself to knowing yourself. You begin to realize that you are not your body or your mind, but rather a soul living in a body with a mind. You are hungry to learn about every spiritual topic such as yoga, meditation Ayurveda, ecstatic dance, shamanism, astrology, crystals, past lives, kundalini, Tantra and energy healing, which may have brought you to Highest Self Podcast. You may do some solo travel to spiritual destinations like Bali, India, or Peru, or have the desire to. Your entire worldview shifts as you become aware of the limiting beliefs passed down inter-generationally and begin to do the healing work. Your family and friends may not recognize you anymore and label you as crazy. This may be a difficult phase where you face loneliness but know that you are making these important shifts to come in alignment with your truth. You begin to realize that there is a whole world of possibilities you haven’t been aware of before. This is when the seed of dharma sprouts.

Stage 4: Higher consciousness

You are out of the spiritual closet and no longer feel the need to hide your beliefs to be taken seriously. You have found the practices that resonate with you and begin sharing them, perhaps on social media or with your family, friends, and colleagues. You know that you have a dharma but you aren’t exactly sure what it is and are still in the dabbling stages. It becomes increasingly obvious to you that your current job is not in full alignment with who you are. You continue your spiritual growth through shadow work, ancestral healing, plant medicine and/or past life regression. You no longer operate from victim consciousness and have realized life is happening for you, rather than to you. You have emerged as an entirely new you and people begin asking you how you did it. This is when the dharma sprout begins to grow.

Stage 5: Stepping into your dharma

Through embodying who you are, you realize your deeper purpose of why you are here. You remember your sacred mission on this planet. Suddenly your worldview transitions from me to we. Your spiritual practice becomes something so much greater than you; it becomes the foundation from which you heal humanity. You are fueled by the cosmos and tapped into universal life force streaming through you. You transform any part of your life that is not in upmost alignment because you see how it is holding you back from your mission. You realize that you are here to be of service and through following your highest joy, you serve the world. You see that you are only a channel for this cosmic wisdom coming through your vessel. This is the space in which you truly embody your dharma and the truth of who you are.

Where are you on your journey? Learn more and receive support, guidance and inspiration in my upcoming book Discover Your Dharma: A Vedic Guide To Finding Your Purpose with foreword by Deepak Chopra, out Jan 5th ‘21.

Quarantine Crisp from Sweet Laurel with Vegan Ice Cream

Is there a better dessert for the season? Sweet Laurel makes grain-free desserts we adore and, for Christmas, we asked founder, Laurel Gallucci to help us make anything gooey, delicious and refined sugar-free that we could top with a scoop of Pressed Juicery's Vanilla Coconut Frozen.

Frozen is the pint-packed version of Pressed Juicery's plant-based iced cream, Freeze (the soft serve version served at stores!) and we can't get enough. It comes in Matcha, Chocolate and Strawberry too, but atop a crisp like this, what's better than Vanilla?

Try this simple, refined sugar, gluten and grain free dessert that's still filled with plenty of cozy and decadent flavor!

Quarantine Crisp with Vegan Ice Cream

Vegan, grain-free, gluten-free

Ingredients
5-6 apples, peeled and chopped
Juice of one lemon

Topping

Our Favorite Beauty YourTuber Started A Skincare Line + Everything Is Under $25

When beauty industry vets like Susan Yara start their own skincare lines, we get excited. We know how many products she's tried, all the insider secrets she's learned, and all the BS she's learned to cut through!

We first met Susan Yara, a beauty YouTuber, product obsessee (and absolute stunner!) years ago while collab’ing on videos and events for clean beauty brands we love. Susan is one of those women in the industry who will get you fully committed to a new skincare protocol or ingredient you hadn't even heard of before you spoke with her.

Earlier this year, we began to hear buzz about a new clean skincare brand named NATURIUM focused on every derm’s favorite ingredients like retinol, vitamin C and niacinamide -- yet all the serums were under $25. When we found out that Susan was the brain behind the new (and wildly affordable) line we were pretty thrilled.

NATURIUM  is the result of years of research from someone who has tried every product under the sun -- this is how we'd like all our skincare products to be born!

We talked to Susan and asked her to spill the tea on all she's learned and and to learn everything about the ingredient-driven products...

The Chalkboard: Susan, you’ve seen it all when it comes to skincare and beauty. At what point did you begin dreaming up this skincare line?

Susan Yara: I had zero intention of creating a skincare line in the beginning! However, a couple of years ago, I shifted all of the video content on my YouTube channel, Mixed Makeup, to skincare. I quickly realized there were only two categories: affordable and luxury. The affordable skincare products were more utilitarian, and while they often worked, they didn’t provide an experience. And the luxury skincare products, while nice all-around, felt inaccessible to most people.

Soon after that realization, I set out to create a small skincare line that could blur those categorical lines, but -- as many experienced with the pandemic -- the project fell through. I like to think it was fate because soon after I met my business partner, Ben Bennett, who had already begun testing the market with the launch of a few NATURIUM  products. I tried them and was immediately obsessed. We both knew there was a need for that in-between brand that didn’t really exist, so when we started to talk it felt like the stars aligned .

We officially joined forces in June 2020 and that’s when our brand really began to click. NATURIUM  is high performance skincare for everyone. All the ingredients and technology we utilize are clinically-effective, skin-compatible -- and we offer a beautiful experience, which is so important to me!

"We could very well price ourselves as a luxury brand, but we choose to keep our prices at $25 and under because we think that everyone deserves to enjoy an effective skincare routine.

The Chalkboard: That's so great to hear. We love your mission of keeping the price point so low. Many of our favorite wellness brands are aligned on that same mission. Most people can appreciate that creating a line of unique products can be tough these days, but you gave us dermal FOMO right at first glance! Can we talk about some of your star ingredients right off the bat?

Susan Yara: Yes! You mentioned some of the ingredients we focus on above: Vitamin C, retinol, niacinamide. These are core skincare ingredients that almost everyone can majorly benefit from.

The ingredients I'm most excited about in our products right now are...

Niacinamide: I dubbed 2020 "the year of niacinamide" because it has been in skincare products for a very long time, but people are only now starting to notice. It’s a magical ingredient that can soothe and strengthen the skin, brighten, and balance oil production (people with oily skin LOVE it). It’s also really gentle.

Vitamin C: This is a powerhouse antioxidant because of it's overall brightening effect on the skin and, when used in the morning, Vitamin C is also known to boost the efficacy of your sunscreen! It fights free radicals that can really damage your skin and cause premature aging.

Retinol: Everyone with acne or over the age of 25 needs a retinoid in their life because they’re the only proven ingredient to stimulate skin cell turnover and stimulate collagen. The gold standard is prescription-strength tretinoin, but I prefer a more gentle approach with our form of retinol that you can use everyday.

Azelaic Acid: This is the ingredient to keep an eye on in 2021. I discovered how much I loved it while I was pregnant with my second baby. It gently exfoliates and brightens the skin, reduces inflammation, and derivatives of it can even balance oil production. Plus, most skin types can use it -- even those with sensitive skin! Even pregnant and breastfeeding moms can use it (though we always advise you to check with your doctor before using anything new).

Hyaluronic Acid: I think everyone knows that hyaluronic acid is that star ingredient when you want hydrated, plumper-looking skin. Hyaluronic acid is an absolute skincare darling lately because of its ability to retain the skin's natural moisture.

We're obsessed with Hyaluronic Acid and so it everybody else -- we're just making it affordable!

We also utilize unique 'delivery systems' to keep some of these ingredients stable and help them penetrate the skin better. When I say we’re “skin-compatible,” I mean that we figure out ways to make a formula work well with your skin. That can be with ingredients that your skin recognizes or formulas that have a pH that won't irritate your skin or disrupt your skin barrier.

For example, the most well-researched and studied form of Vitamin C in skincare is L-Ascorbic Acid, and while there are a lot of those serums on the market, many of them oxidize quickly or can irritate the skin. Sometimes both!

Our delivery system is unique and allows us to offer a Vitamin C Serum that is stable, penetrates the skin, and is less likely to irritate because we can keep the overall formula at a more gentle pH level. We're so proud of that because our Vitamin C Complex Serum is still just $20.

The Chalkboard: Yes, definitely obsessed with most of these skincare ingredients! Speaking of affordability, I imagine that you must be most proud of how affordable you were able to make these serums -- while still creating a super effective product! How hard was that?

Susan Yara: I’m extremely proud of that. It’s not easy. We work really hard behind-the-scenes to source high-quality ingredients and packaging we love, but we’re very mindful of cost and try not to be excessive. My favorite product, our Plant Ceramide Rich Moisture Cream is $25  and can compete with most luxury skincare products I've tried — and I've tried all the things. This moisturizer is a dream on the skin.

I didn’t have a lot of money growing up, so it’s a thrill for me to provide these products to those who don't have a glamorous beauty budget but still want all the best skincare ingredients they're reading about online. It's the way it should be.

The Chalkboard: Which NATURIUM  products you could directly correlate as ‘replacements/alternatives’ for specific services?

Susan Yara: I wish skincare products could replace in-office treatments! Honestly, the skincare brands that claim that are probably lying. That said, your skincare products are equally important, especially when it comes to maintenance.

Even if you're seeing the best dermatologist in the world once a year, you can't expect not to maintain your skin every day. At the very minimum, you need to cleanse, moisturize, and protect your skin with sunscreen. Botox temporarily minimizes wrinkles like nothing else, but if you have dry, dull skin, your fine lines will still be present! It’s so important to use your exfoliants and moisturizers in conjunction with any treatment.

The Chalkboard: Your skin is a lesson unto itself, let’s talk about your own routine! What do you use daily and what do you do as a treatment periodically?

Susan Yara:Thank you! I’m headed into my forties and I feel really good about my skin. People think it’s dependent only on genetics, but genetics play only about 25% of the role in how your skin ages. The other 75% come down to internal factors like health and wellness, plus external factors like your skincare routine, treatments, and -- the biggest aggressor -- UV rays.

You will always find retinol, Vitamin C, and niacinamide in my skincare routine. Always. They are the staples. My favorites from NATURIUM  are:

NATURIUM Retinol Complex Cream because it has encapsulated retinol to help it penetrate the skin, along with a blend of bakuchiol and bio-retinol. It feels like a light moisturizer and if I’m too tired to do a full routine, I’ll wash my face and just apply this before bed. It’s a must.

NATURIUM Vitamin C Complex Serum is, in my opinion, the best out there. It has all the benefits I mentioned earlier and can’t be beat.

NATURIUM Niacinamide Skin Mist 2% is my favorite way to get a dose of niacinamide in my routine, while also hydrating my skin. I keep this in my bag and use it before I re-apply my sunscreen.

I also deal with melasma and hyperpigmentation that got worse after pregnancy, so I love gentle exfoliation with ingredients like AHAs (think glycolic acid and mandelic acid) and skin brightening ingredients like alpha arbutin and tranexamic acid.

We offer a few products with these ingredients, but my favorites are NATURIUM Glycolic Acid Resurfacing Solution 8%, Alpha Arbutin Essence 1%, and our Tranexamic Topical Acid 5%. And yes, I layer a lot of these products! They’re all light and made to be used in this way.

Sunscreen is my one must-have product though. If I can only choose one, it’s that. I also get Botox for my crow’s feet, microneedling about twice a year for some skin-tightening, and I swear by a facial from Vanessa Hernandez every few months.

The Chalkboard: In “normal” conditions, which are your favorite in-office and at-home treatments?

Susan Yara:At home, I’m all about microcurrent and have used the NuFace Trinity for almost a decade. I consider it exercise for my face.

I fully consider our Glycolic Acid Resurfacing Gel 10% to be an at-home treatment for those that like exfoliation. Glycolic acid is the queen of the alpha hydroxy acids, which are chemical exfoliants that help clear the top layer of dead skin. Glycolic acid specifically has a small molecular structure, so it can penetrate the skin a little deeper than other AHAs. It has also been known to stimulate fibroblasts that help with collagen production, while also increasing hydration in the skin and brightening. It’s an amazing ingredient.

As far as services go, nothing beats an amazing facial from an esthetician armed with skincare knowledge and magic hands. My go-to esthetician is Vanessa Hernandez, but there are other wonderful estheticians I like to see for specific treatments like Biba de Sousa and Nerida Joy.

Finding your esthetician is like dating, but when you meet him or her, you’ll know it and your skin will be better for it. I also think nothing beats Botox. I see Beverly Hills Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Karan Dhir when I need a touch up (and he’ll be my go-to when it’s time to step it up!).

For laser and other in-office treatments, Melissa Haloossim at Skin Thesis is the best. These are all people I have worked with for years and I trust them with my face. It’s really important to see experts with good reputations!

The Chalkboard: I’m sure you’ve heard back quite a bit from your skincare users. Anything really remarkable that’s stuck with you from people? Maybe someone specific or a specific skin condition?

Susan Yara: Everyone that reaches out usually starts their skincare journey due to some kind of issue. It can be acne, hyperpigmentation, aging, or even just the desire to look their best. Through the process, they learn that skincare is truly self-care. Even a simple, three-step skincare routine can be just as therapeutic as a 10-step routine. It’s a moment in the morning and at night to focus on yourself and remember that you deserve this.

The Chalkboard: If you had to pick one thing as NATURIUM's claim to fame, what would you say is the most remarkable product or effect you’re hearing about from customers?

Susan Yara: NATURIUM isn’t about one skincare condition. I think what strikes people is that we’re truly inclusive. We want to provide everyone with effective skincare products they will enjoy.

Starting in January, we’ll really get the opportunity to reach the masses because we’re launching in every Target location in the nation. It feels like a dream come true!

The Immunity Supplement 5x More Powerful Than Vitamin C Alone

I have to be honest, I take handfuls of supplements everyday and I don’t mind it at all. In fact, I sort of revel in all the different vitamins and functionalities as I go. If you’re blinking hard at me through your phone, I get it: I’m definitely an outlier here! Most people I know are looking for any possible scenario in which they can reduce the chore and confusion of taking multiple supplements a day.

This year, supplementing for immunity is a non-negotiable, but if you're overwhelmed by what to take -- or just the sheer amount of supplements you're being recommended, you're not alone!

Further Food now offers a new doctor-formulated daily supplement with twenty-seven powerful immune enhancing ingredients, including all the heavy hitters like vitamins C and D, plus antioxidants, minerals and superherbs, in every capsule. This is the ultimate supplement for those who don’t want to mess with a shelf of tinctures and pills and it’s formulated by Further Food’s own Functional Medicine Doctor who is breaking down everything about the new Ultimate Immune Support with us below...

Functional Medicine is one of the most vital movements happening in wellness and healthcare right now. Having a Functional doctor’s own take on immune health now? Pretty priceless.

We asked Dr. Chris Oswald, Functional doc and Further Food’s Chief Science Officer to unpack their potent new daily supplement and talk to us about what’s inside…

THE CHALKBOARD: Dr. Oswald, you told us that Ultimate Immune Support is the supplement you’ve dreamt of giving your patients. Can you talk about why?

Dr. OSWALD: Throughout my career working with patients, I have always been pretty sensitive to “pill fatigue” and how it can be overwhelming for them to manage taking the right immune supplements. There are so many great options to support the immune system, and they all do it in a slightly different way, all of which matter!

While it’s so important to take a variety of immune supportive vitamins, minerals and herbs, the challenge is that doing this the right way requires taking 6, 8, 10 or more different supplements! That’s not convenient for most people, not even myself, and taking care of ourselves shouldn’t be so hard.

"Ultimate Immune Support is my 'dream' supplement because it cuts that number of supplements down from near a dozen to one."

Working with just one immunity supplement helps cut out all the guesswork for my patients and reduces that medicine cabinet full of supplement bottles. Now we’ve got a single option to replace them all!

TCM: Let’s talk about what’s inside the daily supplement — 27 ingredients is a lot!  Can you share a bit about each or at least the superstars in the mix that people might not be familiar with?

Dr. OSWALD:

Vitamins: Ultimate Immune Support contains the immune superstars we all know and love: vitamins C & D, but also Vitamins A & E which provide lesser known, but powerful immune benefits as well. Making sure you have enough of all your important vitamins is key to keeping your immune system at its best.

Minerals: The powerhouse here is Zinc, essential to healthy immune function, but also necessary for over 200 reactions in the body. Zinc helps you do just about everything!

Mushrooms: Maitake mushroom leads the way here with a growing amount of clinical evidence pointing to its immune superpowers. The rest of the mushrooms further help to buoy the immune support you’re getting in the other ingredients by providing a variety of important beta-glucans and other polysaccharides.

Antioxidants: The primary antioxidants; vitamins A, C, & E and selenium, are all included in ideal dosages, but there are also herbs which help the antioxidants work significantly better. While there are many to choose from, Green Tea extract and Quercetin provide the bulk of this support.

Herbs: There are a variety of herbs in the formula that alone have great clinical evidence around their immune-enhancing potential, like Astragalus and Andrographis (which both have been used for centuries in Chinese medicine). The clinically studied herbs like elderberry and echinacea were also included to provide that multifaceted support so many people are looking for and need.

While including herbs that have human clinical evidence are important to me, I never forget about those herbs with hundreds, if not thousands, of years of use in traditional medicine. Things like garlic and ginger have been relied on by many health practices across the world, and the long rich history of the use of elecampane, horehound, and english ivy to support healthy respiratory function also shouldn’t be forgotten. There’s a reason humans have relied on powerful plants to keep us healthy for so long, and there’s a reason why those practices and that knowledge keeps getting passed down!

TCM: We also take Further Food’s Elderberry Syrup everyday after reading the research about elderberry and the flu virus. Okay to double down? What’s your take on Elderberry?

Dr. OSWALD: Elderberry is great and can certainly be combined with Ultimate Immune Support! Native American and Naturopaths have both long relied on this remedy. The mounting clinical evidence supports the wisdom of traditional medicine that points to the use of this powerful little berry. A spoonful of Elderberry a day plus your daily Ultimate Immune Support sounds like a powerful immune duo to me!

TCM: Some people will ask, “Can’t I just take a one and done Vitamin C and call it a day?” Talk to us about why it’s so important to approach immune health with all of these ingredients?

Dr. OSWALD: I have long recommended vitamin C, but that is only a single part of a much larger puzzle. The best way to describe why taking a variety of vitamins and minerals is that they help to fill your gas tank.

What do I mean by gas tank? I mean that these diverse nutritious sources provide your body with the nutrients necessary to support the immune system. In each Ultimate Immune Support capsule, you have this collection of herbs, mushrooms and antioxidants to help promote a healthy immune response. For the best immune support, you’ve got to keep that gas tank at full, and the easiest way to do that is to make sure you’re getting that diverse range of vitamins, minerals and nutrients I talked about.

TCM: What else are you sharing with patients recently for immunity? Certainly plenty of rest is in order for us all!

Dr. OSWALD: Supplements to nourish the body are one thing, but you nailed it that healthy levels of rest and sleep are paramount to the body’s ability to heal and stay well.

With my patients, I always focus on a foundation of healthy food and exercise as non-negotiable. While you don’t need to be perfect at all times, a balanced diet with a focus on fresh fruits and vegetables, paired with regular exercise is one of the most potent combinations to promote immune health I can think of. What you put into your body and what you do with your body are key to maintaining good health!

Pumpkin Curry Soup with Coconut Milk + Honey Cumin Pumpkin Seeds

Are you a 'soup person' or no? Some people consider soup a simple distraction from the main course, others list soup as the main attraction of their 'final supper' (My Last Supper by chefs around the world is something of an obsession!)

Nutritionist Jennie Miremadi's recipe for Pumpkin Curry Soup had us at hello and will convert you into a soup lover immediately if you 'just didn't get it' before (it's all about the honey seeds on top)...

Pumpkin Curry Soup with Coconut Milk
+ Honey Cumin Pumpkin Seeds

Makes approximately 5 cups of soup

Ingredients

1/2 cup organic, raw pumpkin seeds
1 tbsp. honey
1 tsp. extra-virgin olive oil
2 tsp. cumin
Himalayan pink salt to taste

Instructions

1 Heat olive oil over medium heat in a soup pot. Add onion and garlic and sauté until vegetables are tender.
2 Once vegetables are tender, add curry powder, cumin, coriander and salt to taste to vegetables, and mix until vegetables are fully coated with spices and salt.
3 Next, add chicken broth to vegetables and bring to a boil over medium heat.
4 Once chicken broth is boiling, immediately reduce heat to medium-low and simmer. Then, add pumpkin puree and coconut milk to chicken broth and vegetables, and mix until combined. Simmer soup uncovered for 10 minutes. Stir soup occasionally while it is simmering.
5 Remove soup from heat and pour into a high-speed blender. Blend soup until creamy and smooth.
6 Adjust salt to taste.
7 Pour soup into bowls. Drizzle with extra coconut milk, if desired, and sprinkle with Honey Cumin Pumpkin Seeds.
8 Serve and enjoy!

For the seeds
(Makes approximately ½ cup)

1/2 cup organic, raw pumpkin seeds
1 tbsp. honey
1 tsp. extra-virgin olive oil
2 tsp. cumin
Himalayan pink salt to taste

1 Preheat oven to 275 degrees fahrenheit.
2 Mix honey and olive oil together in a bowl until combined.
3 Add pumpkin seeds and toss to coat.
4 Spread pumpkin seed mixture into a flat layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Sprinkle cumin and salt to taste over the top of pumpkin seeds. Mix pumpkin seeds, cumin and salt together until pumpkin seeds are fully coated with cumin and salt. Spread pumpkin seeds back into a flat layer on parchment-lined baking sheet.
5 Bake for approximately 12-15 minutes or until lightly toasted.
6 Remove from the oven and adjust salt to taste.
7 Serve with Pumpkin Curry Soup and enjoy!

A Masterclass in Healthy Holiday Swaps with Nutritionist Kristin Dahl

I've spoken with so many nutritionists over the years, but there are probably just seven or eight I rely on for the real deal.

We've never been the kind of site to tell you to swap 'Ranch dressing' for fake Ranch dressing with less calories (if that's what you're after, you can easily find it). What we're after -- and want to share with you! -- are smart, holistic ideas like Kristin Dahl's. After all, that fake Ranch could have a worse effect on our health than the original and we need all the help we can get to steer us to alternatives that taste great and are made with real ingredients -- maybe even ingredients with benefits.

This ginormous guide to healthy holiday swaps is pretty timeless, endlessly useful, and not for the faint of heart. Expect niche wellness ideas to be sure, but understand that they'll probably be in wellness trend guides in 2024 (inserts wink emoji here). Here's Kristin...

Eating consciously to support our health has never felt more important. With immunity on our minds, we want to make healthy choices as consistently as we can. Just because it’s the holidays doesn’t mean that we have to throw our regular routines out the window. We can have our cake and eat it too (trust me, there are plenty of delicious + satisfying alternatives!).

Here are a handful of holistic holiday swaps to make the holidays feel nourishing as well as satisfying. Dive into them while enjoying my fun playlists to cook, create and dine to. Enjoy!

HORS D’OEUVRES

Organic goat/sheep cheese & milk vs. cow milk/cheese

Benefits: Organic goat/sheep products are often less processed than non-organic dairy options, with a higher nutritional value and better digestibility as they come from a smaller animal. Goat and sheep milk are also better options for those with dairy sensitivities as there is less lactose, or milk sugar than there is in cow milk products.

The vegan option: Nut Cheeses

Benefits: Nut cheeses can be super versatile and amazing for digestion! They can also resemble the flavors of traditional cheese without the inflammatory side effects of dairy. Traditional cheeses, especially for those who are lactose intolerant, can exacerbate digestive issues. Nut cheeses are loaded with healthy proteins, fats, and fiber, plus, they're incredibly delicious!

Misha’s is an incredible LA company, as well as Blod Kuh - both can be found at local farmers’ markets. Treeline is a more widely available brand.

Veggie Plate + Hummus vs. Pigs in a blanket + Sausage rolls, etc

Benefits: Traditional meat-filled pastry appetizers often tend towards highly processed options that are filled with excess sodium, sugar, and unhealthy fats. Crudités with hummus adds vitamins and minerals from the veggies paired with healthy fats, fiber, and protein from hummus.

Gluten-Free Crackers  + Hemp Seed Pesto

Benefits: Gluten-free crackers are a simple swap for traditional crackers, and are full of healthy ingredients that won’t cause intestinal upset. Simple Mills is a wonderful brand with so many great options - their rosemary crackers are beyond delicious! Hemp seeds are amazing for lowering inflammation due to their balanced omega 3:6 ratio, with the bonus of protein, vitamin E, potassium, and iron. Combine the two and you have a delicious and healthy combination to improve digestion and overall health. This Pesto is lovely paired with crudités as well.

Kale Chips

Benefits: These can be made in a variety of different ways to get that satisfying crunch we all love. Kale chips are an excellent source of vitamin K, which can help improve blood clotting abilities. Overall, kale is high in vitamins and minerals, with less processing, sodium, and preservatives than regular potato chips.

Homemade Seasoned Nuts

Benefits: Nuts are great for curbing appetite and are loaded with protein and fiber. Roasting nuts at home means you can season them to your liking, while store-bought versions generally contain high amounts of sodium, seed oils, and preservatives.

MAINS

Organic + Grass-Fed Meat vs. Conventional Meat

Benefits:  Organic and grass-fed meat contains no growth hormone or antibiotics, plus a lower fat ratio than conventional meat. Grass-fed animals have more omega 3 fatty acids because they consume more nutrients due to eating grass, their natural diet, versus grain and soy-based feed like conventionally fed animals, which causes non-organic options to have more omega 6 fatty acids.

Wild-Caught Fish Vs. Farmed Fish

Benefits: Wild-caught fish contains high amounts of vitamins and minerals, plus omega 3 fatty acids. Wild fish also tend to eat a natural diet of algae, krill, and smaller fish. This means that their diet is more varied, whereas farmed fish have a pretty consistent diet and are fed things that fish don’t (and shouldn’t) typically consume. This results in a lower nutrient profile. Farmed fish are also exposed to chlorine and other toxic tank cleaners and given antibiotics.

Vegan options: -Tempeh, lentils, legumes

Ideas: Baked Tempeh, Tempeh Salad, Dahl, Kitchari, Lentil soup, Bean Salad, Gluten-Free Tempeh Lasagna

Benefits: Tempeh, lentils, and legumes are not only high protein but are loaded with fiber and are excellent for digestive health. Vegan protein sources have one thing meat doesn’t: fiber! Fiber helps us feel full longer, regulates blood sugar, and moves food along the digestive tract to help keep us regular while eliminating toxins.

SIDES

Gluten-Free Bread or Biscuits  or Fresh Sourdough Bread

Benefits: Gluten-free bread is a great alternative to regular gluten-containing products, which trigger an inflammatory response in most people and can lead to digestive distress and food intolerance. If you choose to eat gluten and don’t have an issue with it, sourdough is the perfect option as it’s a fermented product. The fermentation process adds enzymes and prebiotics improving digestibility.

Superbloom has the best of both worlds! Offering gluten-free sourdough flour options for the holidays and an incredible seltzer biscuit recipe on their site + flour to create your own!

Celery root (celeriac) vs. mashed potatoes

Benefits: A major benefit to mashed celery root is its ability to help balance blood sugar levels. It’s a wonderful low-carb option that’s loaded with antioxidants and fiber and low on the Glycemic Index. Traditional, mashed potatoes contain less nutrients and are often loaded with conventional butter and sometimes sour cream, which can cause gas and bloating.

Sweet potatoes, yams, parsnips, butternut squash, kabocha squash vs white potatoes

Benefits: Root veggies offer a wide variety of vitamins and minerals, making them an excellent addition to your holiday menu. They’re also loaded with fiber which helps to regulate blood sugar.

Fresh, Simple Greens & Herbs Salad

Benefits: Fresh greens offer an alkalizing and high-nutrient option to the dinner table plus some variety when it comes to texture. Adding fresh herbs, nuts and seeds plus pops of color with seasonal foods like pomegranate give salads a dynamic flavor profile and a boost of nutrition.

Simple Sauteed Greens such as Collards or Kale

Benefits: Greens are a powerhouse when it comes to vitamins and minerals. Sautéing them helps improve flavor and digestibility. A simple dash of extra virgin olive oil, lemon, and sea salt, garlic, & voilà!

Homemade Cranberry Sauce vs. Canned

Benefits: Cranberries are loaded with antioxidants and immune-enhancing Vitamin C. Canned cranberry sauce often contains added sugars, preservatives and sits for a prolonged period of time in cans that may also contain BPS, a known hormone disruptor, and cancer-causing chemical.

DESSERTS

Coconut palm sugar, maple syrup, raw honey, dates vs. sugar

Benefits: Natural sugars are full of vitamins and minerals such as magnesium and Vitamin B, while some such as dates are even high in fiber. Using a variety of natural sweeteners this holiday will soothe your sweet tooth and keep inflammation at bay. White sugar is damaging to our overall health and vitality. Excess sugar often leads to a suppressed immune response when it comes to fighting off illness.

Gluten-free flour, almond meal, coconut flour, vs. gluten flour

Benefits:  Gluten-free flours are a great swap when you want something lighter or are dealing with an allergy or food sensitivity. They offer more energy, reduce bloating, and are much easier to digest. Gluten can stress the GI tract, causing gas, bloating and leaky gut plus, an increase in systemic inflammation.

DRINKS

Organic/sustainable wine vs. regular wine/booze

Benefits:  Organic wines often leave you with no hangover (as long as you’re hydrating properly) and less reactions linked with asthma and allergies as they contain no sulfites, additives or GMOs,  all of which can trigger hangovers and allergies. Organic grapes are also higher in antioxidants and natural sulfur, so adding these preservatives is unnecessary. Frey Vineyard makes delicious, biodynamic, organic wines free of sulfites - one of my favorites.

Kombucha or Jun for an alcohol-free option

Benefits: These drinks are a great alcohol-free swap when you want something bubbly and fun. Kombucha and Jun are probiotic-rich foods that are made through the process of fermentation. Fermented products enhance “positive” gut bacteria, which can help promote healthy gut flora.

Ginger,  Mint or Lemon Balm tea after dessert or post-meal to enhance digestion

Benefits: All of these herbs can help to support digestion by breaking down gas, reducing bloating and promoting healthy transit time. According to Ayurvedic science, the warmth of tea also helps promote Agni, the digestive fire, which needs to burn bright for proper digestion.

ADD-INS

Himalayan salt, Maldon Salt vs. Iodized Salt

Benefits: Himalayan salt and Maldon salt are better alternatives than traditional iodized salt. Both offer a unique flavor and are rich in minerals. Iodized salt is heavily processed and stripped of minerals, plus often contains synthetic iodine and anticaking agents.

Seaweeds + Seaweed Salts

Benefits: Seaweeds are packed with vitamins and minerals and are loaded with iodine, which supports thyroid health. A fantastic salt alternative or flavor enhancement to any meal or snack. Daybreak seaweed co is a wonderful, women-run west coast company working hard to create sustainable seaweed and sea salts.

Grass-fed, organic butter & ghee vs. margarine

Benefits: Grass-fed butter is high in calcium and vitamin K2, which helps with the assimilation of vitamin D. Ghee is a lovely lactose-free alternative that’s considered liquid gold in ayurvedic medicine for its gut-healing and restorative properties. Margarine is often toted as a heart-healthy alternative, though it’s a highly processed and denatured fat, which increases inflammation.

Oils: Olive Oil, Coconut Oil,  vs. Seed Oils, Canola Oil, etc

Benefits: Olive oil is loaded with nutrients and antioxidants and is a lovely addition to homemade dressings or drizzled over salads and lightly cooked foods, while coconut oil adds a light flavor to baked goods. In contrast, canola and seeds oils are highly processed, inflammatory, and often GMO.

Coconut or Cashew Cream vs. Condensed Cream/ Whipped Cream

Benefits: Coconut or cashew cream can be a great replacement for other more traditional whipped toppings. They’re dairy-free but still rich and creamy and a wonderful alternative to baked goods or as a side-topping.

Simple Homemade Dressings vs. store-bought

Benefits: Homemade dressings can be a fun way to explore new ingredients in the kitchen. Plus, they’re super easy to make! The possibilities are virtually endless, and the best part is, you decide what goes in them. Store-bought dressings often contain unnecessary additives such as sugar, inflammatory oils, and preservatives.

Try this simple honey balsamic vinaigrette :

1/3 cup Balsamic Vinegar

1/2 cup Olive Oil

2 tbsp Dijon Mustard

*optional - 1 tbsp Raw Honey (liquified with a splash of warm water, if needed)

Pinch of Maldon or Sea Salt

Sage, Thyme, Rosemary

Benefits: These herbs contain a variety of antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral properties which help to enhance immune and digestive health. Plus they add delicious flavor to your cooking!

Try: Simple roasted root veggies - parsnips, sweet potatoes and yams + olive oil, herbs and Maldon salt. Chop and bake veggies for about 45 mins at 350 - rotating in between.

Turmeric

Benefits: Turmeric contains curcumin, an extremely effective antioxidant that helps combat free radical damage. It’s also known for its anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties - making it a wonderful addition to any meal or spice blend.

Ginger, fennel, dandelion

Benefits: These herbs can help alleviate a variety of stomach discomfort, such as gas, bloating, and nausea. Ginger is an amazing warming spice which boosts digestive Agni, and speeds up stomach emptying time. Fennel can help to soothe gas & bloat and dandelion helps to support healthy liver function and alleviate constipation. All beautiful options to have on hand after a hearty meal.

+ Quick tip : add bitters to water or chew a small piece of ginger before meals to enhance digestive function

Ferments - sauerkraut, kefir, organic grass-fed yogurts

Benefits: Fermented foods are great for digestion and soothing an upset stomach. They’re full of healthy prebiotics & probiotics that help the proliferation of positive gut bacteria.
