TCM Weekend: Where To Hang In Culver City According To Us

In LA, the best trips are sometimes the ones taken right into a new neighborhood. Exploring a new block or two with a tourist's eye and a bit of native know-how can turn any day into an adventure. Lately, we've loved exploring Culver City.

In the past few years, LA's Culver City has blossomed into a shopping, food and design destination. The area's old Hollywood roots, incredibly central location and explosion of new places to shop and eat make it the perfect mid-city date for east and westsiders. Whatever you're in the mood for, here are a few of our all-time favorite spots in Culver City...

Where To Eat

destroyer | This daytime-only cafe has major design chops. Fittingly, the food often looks more like contemporary art than anything we'd ever expect to find on a cafe menu. Made using meticulously sourced ingredients, any of the food -- which is somehow not obscenely expensive -- feels like a serious treat-yourself-moment. Discover why we love Destroyer here and learn about their visionary chef here.
loqui | Tucked away in the cool retail slash lifestyle space, Platform LA, Loqui is the perfect cross between hole-in-the wall taco joint and trendy neighborhood resto. Their tacos are fresh and insanely addictive, with the real stars being the house guac and handmade tortillas. Mixed by hand, these magical discs of dough are worth breaking your gluten-ban for. But don't worry, there's a GF option too.

lodge bread co | This neighborhoody haunt serves up bread baked the old fashioned way, as well as a great menu full of diverse options. Insider's tip: avoid eye contact with the basketball-sized cinnamon roll. Or don't.
hayden | Part wine bar, part cozy cafe, Hayden is a dreamy blend of quick, casual and chic. The light and airy spot serves up bottles of wonderfully unusual natural wines and little bites made to share, from oysters and ceviche to toasts and desserts. Hayden's stylish, but casual vibe makes it the perfect place for a first date: guests can easily keep it quick and casual or linger all night - depending on how things go.

akasha | Akasha was one of the first LA restaurants to make eating vegan a stylish experience. Once a star-studded vegan hangout, this old school classic still provides one of the best fine dining experiences in the city for vegans. We love the dining room's industrial modern feel.

sweetgreen | Midcity and looking for something quick but nutritionally satisfying? Drop in to build the salad or grain bowl of your dreams, or go for one of their chef-inspired seasonal specials. Thoughtfully sourced and prepped fresh daily, sweetgreen's ingredients are on point which means whatever you order you can't go wrong. you can sneak a peek into the company's experimental kitchen if you're lucky too.

n/ naka  | This swanky Japanese restaurant is considered one of the absolute best in the city. That means your dinner is likely to be pricey, but you'll end up with one of the best meals you've ever had. So much of LA's sushi scene is about funk and creativity, but N/Naka keeps it classic and timeless. N/Naka is the kind of place you go to for the freshest fish and the most traditional pairings, with a contemporary feel from plate to palate. It's not the kind of place you stop into for a quick bite, but rather one you go for when you're looking to luxuriate in your dining experience. Also, we should note that it was featured on the first season of Chef's Table, so if you want a real feel be sure to check it out before booking a reservation.

bar nine | Just around the corner from Destroyer, Bar Nine bears all the industrial minimalist style you hope to find in this neighborhood, but isn't over-crowded. Cross your fingers and head in to find (the illusive) coffee shop perch - the coffee is bold and better here than most cups in town.

Where to Shop
bird | Hailing straight from Brooklyn, Bird is one of our fave places to shop for independent labels when we're not looking for something specific. We're just waiting for something special to jump out at us among the quirky chic racks -- expect to find plenty of prints and playful silhouettes. Bird also promotes eco-conscious ideals in the build of the store and the brands they stock.

reformation | Fashion girls rejoiced when eco-conscious and uber stylish Reformation made its way to the Westside and landed right on the edge of the Platform center. Their green ethos can be spotted everywhere, from the fashionably upcycled materials to the earth-friendly design elements in their stores. This store is extra fun to frolick through with their electronic shopping experience. There are racks of clothes all over the store with samples, but shopping is done through massive touch-screen TVs - a hybrid online / offline experience.

Arcana books | Located in the historic Helm's Bakery complex, this arts-oriented bookstore is one of the largest in the city -  and a serious treat for the creative-type. We could spend hours browsing the beautiful variety of books on everything from architecture to photography to rock and roll.

midland | Midland  is a gorgeous curation of home and lifestyle goods from the ladies who founded stylish event planning co, Bash Please. Midland is the stuff of a modern wellness girl's dreams - think jewelry and home goods from local LA designers, modern silhouettes made with natural materials, incense, perfume and other perfectly giftable essentials. Meet the founders and learn more about the Culver shop here.

tenoverten | tenoverten is one of our favorite spots to get a green mani-pedi. This specific locale offers spa experiences too. Stop by for a fresh coat of non-toxic nail polish and stay for a shamanic reiki facial by their resident holistic skincare pro. They also have a strong curation of green beauty to shop while your nails dry.

The edit | This chic AF hybrid store is the fashion baby of two stylish ladies, LA-based hat designer Janessa Leone, and luxury shoe queen Freda Salvatore. You might find yourself splurging on a killer pair of sandals or the wide-brim hat finally turns you into a "hat person" but honestly, we get as much of a thrill just from browsing the beautifully combined collection.

varley pop-up | Focused equally on performance and style, fitness lifestyle brand Varley is one of our faves when we need a chic new workout outfit to inspire us back into the gym. Their pop up at Platform LA is a fun opportunity to try things on, feel the materials, and do all the hands-on evaluating you can't do when shopping online. They're also hosting cool wellness events and workout classes all summer.

Nanushka pop-up | This Turkish brand has set up shop for a few months at Platform LA. Their clothes have a vintage feel, meaning they don't look like everything else in every other store. Each item has a timeless feel infused with subtle femininity and a casual-but-modern edge we just can't quit.

5 High-Vibe Survival Tips for Bicoastal Living (Or Any Flight!)

We love the idea of bicoastal living. Heck, our brains already live in both LA and NYC, why not our bodies too? While the idea of a bicoastal life sounds glamorous, the reality can be mentally and physically taxing. Anyone who travels often knows the havoc that airplane-life can unload on the body without the right survival tools.

Ahead are wellnessy tips from CAP Beauty co-founder, Kerrilynn Pamer, who lives the bi-coastal life between her NYC and LA shop locations. Here's how to create a restorative routine that's simple enough to take on-board and powerful enough to rely on....

These past few months have seen me traveling from coast to coast more than ever, so I've been diving deep into my rituals and setting up systems to support me while in the sky and when I'm back on the ground. Now I'm flying the friendly skies with more ease than I imagined possible.

Dr. Singha's Travel Tonic | I keep this in my pouch to calm my stomach during times of turbulence and unrest. A few drops in a glass of water settles my stomach and calms my nerves. CHECK OUT

Urban Moonshine Travel Size Original Bitters | These have saved me countless times and I never travel without them. The small bottle stays in my purse, allowing for easier digestion when traveling. I swear by them. CHECK OUT

CAP Beauty Matcha Sticks | Uplevel your early morning flight or perk up your afternoon with these convenient sticks of clear, calm caffeine. Organic, ceremonial grade matcha on the go. Japan is always close by. CHECK OUT

Moon Juice Spirit Dust Sachets | These keep my spirit in check when traveling. A hit in some hot water and I feel calm and mellow, allowing me to enjoy my travel more easily. CHECK OUT

CAP Beauty The Anointing Oil | Our CAPtivator in an oil form. I dot this on my wrists and neck to increase magnetism and encourage a deeper love. Both of which are good to have on hand when traveling. CHECK OUT

One more tip: my friend and mentor, Gil Jacobs, strongly suggests abstaining from eating anything on the flight as our bodies have a hard time digesting when we are in the sky. I've been trying it out and have to say, it works.

The Top Wellness Trends Our Readers Just Can’t Deal With

Wellness trends. They come and they go. They delight, they transform, they disillusion and they inspire.

We use the term 'wellness trend' fluidly. If a boring, old-as-dirt veggie like kale can become a phenomenon, you know that almost anything can trend. Whatever you're into -- or not into -- there's no judgment here. Wellness isn't one-size-fits-all. That face oil your sister is addicted to could be totally wrong for you. Or maybe your bestie is on a keto kick and loving it, but you literally. can't. even.

Trends can surge a good new idea out into the masses - but the same surge happens for not-so-great ideas too.

We asked our Instagram and Facebook followings to divulge the top wellness trends they're feeling the least (go read them all!) and we picked these hilarious and relatable responses to feature for your enjoyment...

Just the word “keto” is enough to piss me off for some reason.

BONE BROTH. Not because I don’t believe in it, but because I find it seriously disgusting.

Snail beauty products. Yuck.

Haven’t found one I won’t try!

"Healthy" cocktails.

Oil pulling. I know it works but it’s unpleasant and who has the time?

Apple cider vinegar! I've been drinking vinegar since I was old enough to pour it myself. I should look like I'm 15 years old and have the metabolism of a teenager to boot if all those claims were for real. Instead I just have no enamel on my teeth. Still love it though! Haha

Keto/Whole 30/Any diet that doesn’t let me eat pasta.

Anything “anti-aging” like... wow, there’s a face cream / diet / face roller that will turn back the wheel of time?! Give us humans some dignity - maybe we love that time leaves marks on us!

Just because something is ancient doesn’t mean it’s legit!

Crystals inside of drinking water #nope

Every single morning workout...

Matcha. I avoid food from Japan ... since Fukushima is still leaking I am very concerned about contamination- specifically radioactive particles: tritium, strontium 90 - very harmful to our DNA (30,000 year half life) & caesium & radioactive iodine (absorbed by seaweed) .

The fake eyebrow trend!

Colonics because they TERRIFY me.

So funny cause intermittent fasting, collagen and bone broth are the ones that I swear by and they're the top ones people here are saying they can't get behind on here!

Steaming your freaking vagina.

I can’t do kale. I’ve tried so hard, so many ways but, just, no.

Spirulina. it is beautiful, but the presence of BMAA (neurotoxin linked to alzheimer’s like disease) and potential presence of microcystin (linked to liver damage) and/or heavy metals, aren’t worth the risk.

Posting photos of myself meditating. Talk about missing the point.

Single-use face mask mania... so much plastic waste. NOT pretty.

This is the best feed! Anything that is the best thing for everyone out there - I'm a total believer in bio-individuality.

Jade eggs - Are you kidding me with that shiz?!

Oat milk that has canola oil in it - what’s up w/that?

All this BS about cockroach milk. + Cricket flour. I don't give a damn... I'm NOT eating insects. Nope. Nope. Nope. This new broccoli coffee thing got me like 🤢

Crystals + overnight oats + placenta capsules + spiralina

These comments basically describe all my hobbies...

Are there any top wellness trends that are triggering to you? Or does it make you feel extra proud for pouring yourself a tumbler of bone broth at your desk? Share in the comments!

Stash These 6 Spices + Teas That’ll Save You From Bloating

Ayurvedic expert and author of Idiot's Guide to Ayurveda, Sahara Rose is detailing which spices each dosha needs to avoid bloating. We love the idea of incorporating pre or post-dinner teas that do so much good for our bodies. Discover your Ayurvedic mind-body type here, then find out the best way to battle bloating below!

You dress your best, go out and enjoy a seemingly wonderful meal. However, within minutes you start to feel the discomfort and pain of bloating. You feel the heaviness of gas building up and wish you were back home in your sweatpants. This may be due to a poor food combination, but do not fear! There are ways out of this…

Ayurveda has many tips and tricks to ease bloat within the body. Ayurveda is an ancient science that offers wisdom to bring vitality and health to the mind-body balance. Ayurveda suggests certain herbs and spices to bring this balance to each mind-body (dosha) type.

Here a just a few ayurvedic tips for each dosha to help ease the discomfort of bloating...

Vata
Vata is composed of air and ether elements, so it’s safe to say this dosha experiences the most amount of bloating since those are the elements gas is comprised of.

Here are a couple ways vata types can avoid bloating:

Call on Cumin. If you suffer from regular bloating, try sipping warm cumin-seed water before meals to help stimulate digestion. Add about half a teaspoon to hot water and steep for 10 minutes.

Finish With Fennel. After a meal, either chew on about half a teaspoon of fennel seeds or go for a hot cup of fennel tea to alleviate gas build up.

Pitta
Pitta is composed of the fire and water elements and may not bloat often due to having high digestive fire, but when they do, it's important to be proactive to bring down inflammation.

A few ways pitta types can can alleviate these symptoms:

Add Turmeric. Add turmeric to meals or take capsules to bring down inflammation, which will simultaneously ease bloating.

Get Caraway-ed. Chew on about half a teaspoon caraway seeds or a sip a hot cup of caraway tea to reduce bloating after a meal.

Kapha
Kapha is composed of earth and water elements adding an extra bit of heaviness to their bloating discomfort. Not only will they want to ease the gas, but they’ll also want to turn up the heat as they break down the heaviness of a gas-producing meal.

Proactively, kapha types should:

Spice it up. Add a kick of spice to their food, such as cayenne pepper, to help raise digestive fire.

Add Ginger. Ginger is an excellent choice to bring spice to a dish and alleviate bloat. A little bit can be chewed fresh or brewed into a tea to help reduce any additional post-meal bloat.

All Types:

Eat slowly and chew thoroughly. Often we are so rushed through meals we don’t take the time to chew completely and allow the enzymatic breakdown within the mouth. People often forget that the mouth is the first site of the digestion process where precious digestive enzymes are produced!

Eat with ease and gratitude. Often it’s not as much about what you eat, but how you eat. Being mindful and thankful for your food will aid your digestion and the overall experience of a delicious meal.

So whether you’re dining in or out, simply slow down, be mindful and have a few teas, seeds or supplements on hand so you can be more confident with foods you enjoy!

8 Ways To Live A Low Waste Lifestyle (Starting Now)

A few years ago, when NYC-based low waste blogger, Lauren Singer, went viral for containing four years of trash in a single mason jar, the internet started to perk up; most of us can't even fit a lunch's worth of trash into a jar. The topic of waste and sustainability isn't a new one, but suddenly we couldn't unsee a troubling truth about our consumer habits.

According to Lauren, compared to the average American who produces around 4.5 pounds of trash per day, her low waste lifestyle has saved over 6,000 pounds of trash from going into landfills.

Lauren is fully dedicated to the low waste lifestyle -- her famous jar contains little more than stickers from fruits and plastic tags from thrifted clothes. But going all-in isn't the only way to make a meaningful impact. Making little changes that you can actually sustain is more important than becoming a totally different person. Lauren's blog, Trash is for Tossers, is loaded with info to help us ease into a low waste lifestyle. We're sharing a few favorites ahead.

Becoming accountable for your carbon footprint doesn't require you to quit shopping and start mixing all of your own makeup. Instead, try shopping eco-concoius green beauty brands like Kjaer Weis and Sappho who produce re-usable makeup pods with minimal packaging. Stores like NYC's Package Free, founded by Lauren Singer herself, offer daily essentials with nearly no packaging at all. Can't make it to Manhattan to buy low waste detergent? You can find products by Lauren's new company The Simply Co. on shelves all over the country.

What's really amazing is how quickly a low waste lifestyle can melt into day-to-day life. Making lunch out of salad in a jar is cute and convenient, but fundamentally eco-sensitive too. Or maybe you'd rather pop your lunch into a pretty, reusable bento box for a stylish, low waste dining experience. The transition to eco is easier when you have the right tools.

No longer a fringe effort reserved for the crunchiest of hippies, low waste living is feeling more and more accessible. Not sure where to start? Here are a few simple ways to embrace a low waste lifestyle, according to the master, Lauren Singer...

8 Ways to Reduce Waste Daily

Ditch The Straw. When you order a drink at the bar simply ask them to keep the straw out. That tiny piece of plastic might seem insignificant, but imagine how many straws you'd spare over the course of a year through brunches, lunches, dinners and cocktails. What about over a lifetime? Small things add up, and most of them end up in the ocean or in a landfill. Skip the straw all together or invest in a chic tempered glass or metal straw.

byo Coffee cup. Quitting your cafe-made coffee habit can help save a ton of waste over time, and frankly, a ton of money too. We understand if you just can't quit your daily capp at your local spot. Instead, simply bring your own travel tumbler and ditch the paper cups, plastic lids, and cardboard sleeves.

Bring Your Own Bottle. Get yourself a reusable bottle you love and filled her up. Disposable plastic bottles, most of which don't make it to the recycling bin, make up a massive percent of landfills. By the same logic as rejecting straws, making the small move to having your own water bottle at the gym, the beach, or the office, can add up over time. Our tip: get one you can't wait to sip from. Not only is this hydrating habit healthy, but it'll keep you from leaving it places and having to buy a million replacements.

Tote A Tote. Bringing your own bags to the grocery store is a simple way to reduce waste, but make it a point to remember to actually do it. You can also bring cute mesh satchels to buy certain ingredients in bulk. For things you use all the time like oats, lentils, quinoa, skip the pre-packaged version. You'll save the cumulative waste from re-buying, and save money too because you're not paying for packaging or branding. Skip the plastic bags when you're collecting fruits and veggies and throw them into a cute woven sack instead.

Buy A Bamboo Brush. Replace your plastic toothbrush with something just as functional but more eco-friendly, like a bamboo toothbrush. According to Lauren, "over 4.7 billion plastic toothbrushes are used each year. Because they are not recyclable, they end up floating in a landfill forever. By making one simple change from plastic toothbrushes to compostable bamboo ones you are not only doing yourself a favor (bamboo is naturally antimicrobial), but you are also doing the environment a solid because when you are done with the brush you can compost it. Not an ounce of trash is produced."

Mix Your Own Basics. Most of us go through so many plastic bottles of counter cleaner yearly it's absurd. Making your own is ridiculously easy and inexpensive, all it takes is vinegar and water and whatever extra add-in you read about online. Go ahead and keep a commercial bottle on-hand for those deep cleaning days, but for daily wipe ups, this recipe is completely effective -- and you probably have most of the ingredients in your pantry already. You can take this approach for other things you buy all the time, like nut butter or nut milk. You can easily make coconut yogurt too.

turn Scraps to stock. If you have food scraps, save them and compost or, better yet, put them in a freezer bag and make stock with them. It's virtually impossible to mess it up when you follow the basic steps. Use stock to make soup or to help cook and enhance the flavor of your dishes. Try adding stock to sauce, using it when you make grains or just sipping on it plain. Similarly, if you have a bunch of farmers market berries that are about to go bad, transform them into a quick jam or preserve them for your future self. If you have fresh herbs that are wilting, blend them up with some grass-fed butter, roll it into a tube and pop it into the freezer. Slices off discs and use it in your home cooking.

Edit your belongings. This is the most important shift for starting to get serious about low waste living. When we have less, we're willing to spend on better quality. We're also aware of what we use, what we need, and what's simply extra -- aka wasteful. Donate your clothes and keep a wardrobe of things you love to shop less. Don't over load your makeup drawer, it makes you feel like you have to keep up with the sense of abundance. Be mindful of how you live and what you use, and look for little ways to buy less.

Skinny Bitch Pizza Is Delivering Cauliflower Crust In L.A.

Pink pizza box. Cauliflower crust. And a little bit of attitude. How did we not know about LA's Skinny Bitch Pizza?

We recently stumbled upon the delivery-only pizza brand and immediately ordered up a few boxes for our weekly meeting. It was love at first bite - here's what you should know...

skinny bitch pizza

Yes, these are Skinny Bitch Pizza's real pizza boxes - order one and you'll receive it just like this to your doorstep (guaranteed to uplift that wellness documentary binge happening at your place). All Skinny Bitch pizzas come with gluten-free cauliflower crust and the pizza menu kind of kills us - here's what we ordered:

THE AMANDA | Vegetarian. Gluten-free vegan cauliflower crust with part-skim mozzarella, cauliflower, olives, onions, mushrooms, and bell peppers with tomato sauce.

THE MARISSA | Margherita. Gluten-free vegan cauliflower crust fresh mozzarella, sliced tomatoes, fresh basil, and garlic with tomato sauce.

THE LAUREN | Vegan. Gluten-free vegan cauliflower crust with our no sugar marinara and mozzarella style almond cheese.

three skinny bitch pizza boxes

The highlight here is, of course, the crust. It doesn't have the distinctive veggie texture and flavor we're used to enduring with cauliflower crusts. Against all odds, it actually feels like we're biting into a thick and chewy gluten-filled dough. Ingredients include cauliflower, Bob's Gluten Free AP Flour, flax seeds, chia among other clean bits and bobs.

Before you order up, LA -- the delivery-only establishment has some strict delivery rules. If you're in Loz Feliz, Koreatown, and some parts of West Hollywood and Beverly Hills you're deeply in luck. Order delivery whenever you'd like. For the rest of us, ordering a few days in advance is required, but well worth the extra planning. The real benefactors here are the students of USC who are in Skinny Bitch Pizza's prime delivery range. We don't know what kind of crige-worthy pizza delivery made it to your dorm room, but these healthy pink boxes are lighting up Greek Row to be sure.

Would you order cauliflower-crusted pizza delivered in pink boxes? Or are we just too L.A. for you now? Let us know below.

Our Favorite Summer Toast Has Nothing To Do With Avocados

Lately we're obsessed with celery. We know, we know -- not a veggie you'd ever expect to be driving a trend, but recently we've been mainlining the juice and here's why. Drink up the easiest way possible here and consider making it part of a more lasting routine.

This sexy summer celery recipe comes to us from an LA girl we love. Hayley Feldman owns the stylish, Cali-French Chez Tex here in LA with husband Jesse Feldman and we love the place's style from door to plate. We spotted Hayley's recipe on the 'gram and knew her flavor game would be on point...

This celery toast is pretty much all I've eaten this summer. It's light and doesn't require an oven or stove-top. It's also packed with flavor and takes less than half an hour. I mean honestly, how many sad, wilted celery stalks have you thrown away, while most recipes only call for a stalk or two? Celery is a rockstar! Bon appetit!

Here’s Why We Love Lena Dunham’s Viral Body Image Share

As the creator of HBO's Girls, Lena Dunham developed a reputation for addressing awkward, sometimes taboo, topics in the full - sometimes fully nakie - light of day. Tapping into the growing pains we all face as young adults, Lena used 'Girls' to cover topics like anxiety, mental health hurdles, awkward sex and angsty breakdowns in ways that Saved By The Bell and Gossip Girl never did. While at times controversial, Lena's work and writing has helped open up essential conversations that made so many of us feel safer to talk about them too.

Last week Lena took to social media to address a paparazzi's attempt at body shaming. We loved her response...

"On the left: 138 pounds, complimented all day and propositioned by men and on the cover of a tabloid about diets that work. Also, sick in the tissue and in the head and subsisting only on small amounts of sugar, tons of caffeine and a purse pharmacy. On the right: 162 pounds, happy joyous & free, complimented only by people that matter for reasons that matter, subsisting on a steady flow of fun/healthy snacks and apps and entrees, strong from lifting dogs and spirits. Even this OG body positivity warrior sometimes looks at the left picture longingly, until I remember the impossible pain that brought me there and onto my proverbial knees. As I type I can feel my back fat rolling up under my shoulder blades. I lean in."  - @lenadunham

Lena's narrative sounds familiar to so many conversations we've had with other women. It reminds us that how we look tells a much narrower story than how we feel.

Everyone's weight fluctuates. We all know how it feels to make a bit of extra effort when we want to look our absolute best, for vanity's sake -- a wedding, a big celebration or vacation, but, apart from all the efforts and aspirations, do you identify with a weight that feels like your healthy, happy best?

For a wellness site, we don't talk about 'weight' or 'weight loss' much. We get a small thrill out of the way Lena describes her happy, balanced lifestyle during the photo 'on the right'. The $3 Superfood Smoothie Recipe For The Girl On A Budget

Superfood taste on a fast food budget? We get it. We're the first to admit that keeping up with a 12-ingredient blend every morning can get pricey. Expensive ingredients can make superfood smoothies a hard habit to sustain, so we went hunting for a solution.

If you're looking to load up with a high-impact morning smoothie but don't want to go broke (check out this $300 wonder), we've got just the solution. Smoothie whisperer, Sage Dammers -- co-founder of Addictive Wellness -- is solving all our life issues with one whir of the Vitamix. From low-energy mornings to pre-workout boosts, he's crafted the ultimate smoothie for each and every need. Next up, a budget-friendly smoothie that packs a punch, but won't break the bank...

Q: Dear smoothie whisperer, I'm on a limited budget. While I’m excited about the idea of eating superfoods everyday, I’ve got student loans like whoa. Truth be told, I’m not even very consistent with my daily multivitamin! Can you recommend a smoothie recipe that will pack in the most essential nutrition on my limited budget?

A: Having many years of firsthand experience, I fully respect what it’s like trying to live healthy while on a restricted budget! Tomorrow I'll be sharing a few of my favorite health tips on the site - all of which are actually or almost free. Watch for it!

For your smoothie, chia seeds, hemp seeds and hemp protein provide a great array of essential fatty acids and amino acids. Spirulina and hemp seeds are both high in gamma-linolenic acid, a noteworthy nervous system anti-inflammatory. Like hemp seeds and chia seeds, spirulina is also a complete protein. In fact, it is the highest natural food source of protein (65%+).

The coconut oil provides another source of clean-burning fat as well as pregnenolone, a vital precursor to the creation of healthy hormones.

This particular sunflower lecithin is cold-pressed and certified organic, which means that unlike most other lecithin products, it is made without the use of hexane. Not only does it work together with the hemp and chia to make this pudding amazingly creamy, but it also is a great source of phosphatidylcholine, which is a very important nutrient for nervous system and brain health.

So don’t be discouraged by a small budget - anything is possible! All in all, for the recipe below, we’re looking at an ingredient cost of $3.30 for a seriously nutritious and filling meal!

8 Key Wellness Travel Tips + The Truth About Charcoal

We're tackling the topic of wellness while traveling to accompany our weekend guide a to Napa, California. Second to a week of eating our way through Italy, Napa is the perfect example of travel plans that aren't easy to sync with our daily wellness goals.

We're all about easing things up while on vacation, but what's the point of a great itinerary if you feel sideways from breakfast in bed through that al fresco dinner? Here are our top tips to help you feel clear and strong so you can enjoy those holiday plans in style...

Pack Charcoal Tablets

Charcoal has been trending hard in wellness circles lately. So much so that there's been a backlash. Let's break it down. Activated charcoal, like clay, is highly absorptive. That's what makes the stuff so incredible for binding to toxins in the gut and helping us deal with food poisoning, overeating, or any evening involving alcohol. Used correctly, activated charcoal can help the body to detoxify and we highly recommend it during or after a big night out. However, activated charcoal should be used sparingly - too much charcoal can absorb all the good nutrients you're consuming everyday too. Most importantly, the dose and dilution of charcoal is key to avoid serious digestive issues.

We recommend carrying it while traveling, but using sparingly. Have a big dinner out planned with multiple bottles of wine? Pop a couple of charcoal supplements - or, if you want to be extra cautious, do what we do and crack a charcoal tab open , mix thoroughly with a full glass of water and drink slowly.

Ginger + Turmeric Shots
Pick up a stash of ginger shots (we love Pressed Juicery's) to haul along from a juice bar or grocery store and keep in your minibar or road trip cooler. Turmeric shots are also useful and becoming more readily available. Ginger and turmeric are both incredible anti-inflammatory and fight to keep our immunity, skin and digestion strong and healthy.

Depending on where you stay, you may be able to get your hands on fresh ginger shots from your hotel cafe or bar. Both ginger and turmeric will help to quell any inflammation caused by your 'vacation diet', extra glasses of rose at the pool, and the dramas of travel. Shoot one early in the day to help keep your body in balance.

Fit In a Little Exercise
We know, we know: you're on vacation! But the truth is that whether it's a bit of breathwork and yoga in your hotel room to start the day or touring the area on a little hike, getting your circulation going and enjoying some light cardio will keep you feeling great between drinks at the pool or ice cream cones out in town.

Take Cold Showers
An easy, free travel health hack we picked up from former Guest Editor, Bulletproof's Dave Aprey is to simply expose your body to an ice-cold shower for about 30 seconds every day. Cold therapy can curb pain and inflammation, decrease muscle soreness, increase recovery time and fat burning and even boost mood and improve sleep. All things we're looking to hack while traveling.  Learn More

Wake Up and HydrateThis one might seem obvious, but being intentional about hydration can make a huge difference! Here's advice we've shared from nutritionist Kelly Leveque: "Wake up and drink two large glasses of water to help flush out your system and lower blood-glucose levels. It’s especially important if you have been drinking alcohol and might be dehydrated. When you’re dehydrated the volume of blood decreases and the blood glucose remains the same, meaning you have more concentrated blood sugar. Drinking water (ten glasses a day for special occassions) can increase blood volume and decrease glucose concentration.

Take Glutathione For Your Liver
These last two tips come from Dr Frank Lipman and the team at Be Well. "One too many drinks last night? It happens! A good strategy to help avoid a hangover is to stay away from sugary drinks and stick to clear alcohols like vodka and tequila (with seltzer and citrus). But if you did have that one last drink, glutathione, the master antioxidant, can help you bounce back and give your liver a boost. It helps to reduce free radicals and strengthen immunity too. Stress, gaps in our diet and chronic illness, as well as long-term toxic exposure, can not only deplete stores of glutathione but also inhibit its production.

How to Supplement: Take daily. If you know you will be imbibing, we highly recommend 4 capsules of glutathione per day to help aid your liver with detoxification. Check Out

Supplement for Great SleepAccording to Dr. Frank: "Between travel, added stress and late-night parties, vacations can disrupt our natural sleep cycle and leave us feeling less than rested. If you need a little extra help, I recommend these supplements just before bed:

GABA promotes relaxation by quelling overstimulated nerve cells. Check Out

Melatonin helps to synchronize our circadian rhythm so we are alert during the day and at rest during the night. Check Out

5-HTP helps to create the “feel good” hormone, serotonin, which is great for inducing sleep. Check Out

7 Effortless Nutrition Hacks We’re Working Into Our Daily Routines

The truth is that not every food you eat is going to be a superfood. These super-easy nutrition hacks don't require adding an extra meal or supplement. Rather, they're clever ideas for fitting deep nutrition into the things we're already eating on the daily for better well being now and in the long-run.
Our Editor in Chief, Suzanne Hall, recently stopped by the beautiful home of New York Times bestselling author and OG holistic health pro, Sophie Uliano to share  favorite wellness tips in a series Sophie is sharing on YouTube. Sophie's approach to wellness, like out own, thrives in on practical choices with meaningful impact.
Watch the video and skim through the highlights below for nutrition hacks that'll elevate your health daily without complicating your routine...
Drink Actual Mineral Water
Keep the fridge stocked with sparkling mineral water like Gerolsteiner or Pellegrino. These mineral waters come in eco-friendly glass bottles and are packed with minerals (not all sparkling waters are!). A bottle of Gerolsteiner, which we consider to be the champagne of sparkling water, contains 18% daily magnesium. Pellegrino, which is easier to find for most, provides a good dose of calcium.
Green Smoothies, Obviously
Sophie loves taking chlorella and nutrient-dense wheat-grass and barley grass, but that can be a lot to ask of someone who isn't already in the habit of it. If you're looking for a more casual way to get the benefits of daily greens, get yourself a container of Kyo-Green, Sophie's go-to. The powdered blend can be mixed into any juice or smoothie to boost energy and to make your gut really, really happy. Check Out
Supercharge Your Juice

You already know the benefits of drinking lemon water, but there's an easy way to make those health perks work even harder. Suzanne loves drinking Pressed Juicery's spicy lemon cayenne water every day -- one of her favorite nutrition hacks is to mix it with a ginger wellness shot for a dose of gut-soothing ingredients and extra vitamins. Can't make it to a PJ? These bevs can easily be re-created at home.

Make Your Own Alkaline Water

According to the pros, pH balanced alkaline water is amazing to neutralize acidity in the body while also hydrating. Bottles of alkaline water can be very expensive. Sophie's secret tip is to make your own simply by adding a bit of baking soda to any purified water. Throw in a few slices of fresh lemon for more alkalinity and to give it an extra kick of flavor.
Upgrade Your Latte
Souping-up a morning latte with powerful herbs and adaptogens is one of our daily go-tos. When there's no time to measure out thirty different adaptogens, Suzanne is obsessed with adding Wild Remedies to her coffee. The cute little tin contains a few high-quality and high-impact ingredients your body will love. The blend contains Ceylon cinnamon - known for its crazy level of antioxidants and ability to help balance blood sugar, as well as chaga, a medicinal mushroom with incredible health benefits that enhance focus, memory, energy and immunity. Check Out
Address The Adrenals
Adrenal burnout is a serious issue many of us struggle with, whether we know it or not. Give your body a major boost by taking adaptogens. Sophie prefers taking hers in supplement form -- specifically, a blend by Body Software designed to help the body adapt to stress, with a powerful blend known for healing and boosting your adrenals.
Flax Seeds For Life
Toss some ground flax seeds on salads or in smoothies for a super simple and adaptable nutrition hack. Suzanne became obsessed with flax after reading about it in modern wellness guide, How Not to Die which dedicates a whole chapter to the humble seedWith many chapters covering a wide range of health topics, the full chapter on flax seeds says a lot about their benefits! Keep a bag on hand, grind them fresh (store in the freezer to make them last) and sprinkle them on everything to enjoy the healthy fat, fiber and other nutritional benefits.

TCM Weekend: A Luxe Wellness Guide To Napa

One of the perks of living in California are the incredible weekend trips available in every direction. Point and drive (or fly), you're sure to end up someplace amazing - from Palm Springs to the east, Laguna and San Diego to the south and Big Sur, Napa and San Francisco to the north.

Napa is an incredibly beautiful place and the whole world knows it. Which is why a great time there requires a little planning: the whole world comes here to enjoy the wines and the rolling hills full of grapes. Here's our short list of ways to enjoy a weekend in Napa with all those Chalkboardy values in mind: wellness, clean eats and great design...

Where to Stay

wellness Guide To Napa valley california

Auberge de Soleil is undoubtedly on our travel short list. The property continues to reign at the top of some of our favorite travel lists and it has quite a bit to do with this stunning view. From this vantage point, the Auberge glows with the kind of well-appointed details we crave on vacation. You could almost map out your winery visits from the view at dinner. The spa is world-class, the property as green and lush as you hope Napa to be, and the well-appointed suites are hard to leave for those wine and cheese day trips.

wellness guide to napa spa interior

Meadowood | Driving through the woods and emerging out onto the, yes, meadow surrounding Meadowood there's an undeniable sense that one is arriving onto the set of Dirty Dancing. We fully expected to spy Baby delivering a watermelon at some point on our hikes to and from the property's spa main lodge and can't say it didn't give us a thrill.

Cabins at Meadowood are rustic, charming and equipped with wood-burning fireplaces. Inside the more modern, high-design spa, every treatment room is a suite. Book a body wrap + massage to follow all those wine tastings or, if you're lucky enough to book it, linger in their treehouse suite for two. Meadowood is one of few properties in the world with individual 5-star ratings for their resort, spa and restaurant.

What To Do

wellness guide to napa vinyard

Clean wineries. Smart wines. | We come to Napa to ride bikes, see the rolling hills, and get partially off the grid...but mostly to drink wine. When it comes to recommended wineries, Rombauer and Cade are favorites for their beautiful views and experiences, but, in this case, that's not what makes a top pick.

So many of us skip wine in our pursuit of a healthy life. Perhaps it's because we assume it doesn't matter -- most of us aren't expecting health benefits from our cocktails. The truth is that finding 'natural' wines is quite important If not for yourself alone, then to support responsible agriculture just as you do with natural veggies or grass-fed meats. A sad truth that's almost too much of a downer to include in our travel guide is that certain cancer statistics in Sonoma County and Napa County have caught the attention of wellness watchdogs who connect the healthcare trends with agricultural water issues.

Whether you're ready to make the move to natural-only wines or not, there are some top-tier wineries who are either natural or on their way and deserve a visit. Our favorite naturals in Napa include Grgich Hills, Joseph Phelps, and Frog's Leap.

Need more to do? Most of us focus on wine and food while in Napa - and rightly so. Where you stay in Napa is crucial to enjoying a quiet stay away from the crowds. Between all those cheese plates, be sure to explore the surrounding area's plethora of cozy towns. Bikes can be rented almost everywhere and, to be honest, the winding drives are even better. See our note on spas above.

Where To Eat

wellness Guide To Napa food

The Restaurant At Meadowood | A special occasion dinner in Napa is almost always required. A Three Michelin-starred modern American wonder, the Restaurant at Meadowood is the only restaurant in Napa so highly awarded but for the famous French Laundry. Chef Kostow's tasting menu is presented in the inventive style we've all come to expect from young top chefs, but the delicious way he celebrates Napa's local produce is not as common as you'd think in the valley. In many top spots, traditional French food still reigns. Whether you're traveling to Napa with a lover, friends, or family, you know how crucial it can be that your clean eating plans can also please a crowd. The menu here is something that foodies and wellness lovers alike can (deeply) appreciate.

The service at Meadowood is James Beard award-winning, the wine list is (of course)  a treat, and we're sure the grey-blue Howard Backen-designed dining room has inspired interior redesigns everywhere.

Archetype | A more casual spot that still provides a design thrill is Archetype in St. Helena. There's a touch of 'Nancy Meyer's movie' feeling to the dining room and  the menu is based on hyper local and foraged ingredients. Try the cauliflower steak for yourself and rest assured there are plenty of more traditional options for whomever you may be dining with.

have a picnic | Just want to be outdoors enjoying the scenery? Pack a picnic. Many wineries allow you to bring a picnic to enjoy on their grounds and there are so many scenic spots to hole up in on Napa's wineries that it seems they were designed with a picnic lunch in mind. Dean & Deluca is hard to miss in St. Helena and stocks everything you can imagine for the perfect basket lunch.

What about wellness? | A successful trip to Napa requires a little indulgence. How to stay well in between those charcuterie plates and big Napa cabs? Try our guide to feeling good while traveling here -- we designed it with a trip to Napa in mind!

How To Wash Your Face: Are You A Water Only Or Double Wash Kind of Girl?

There are few absolute truths in skincare because all of us have different skin. While one person might exfoliate every day, another with sensitive skin might find a weekly scrub just right. Some pros swear by slathering on SPF every morning, but others will skip for a little medicinal sun absorption instead. Opinions in the beauty world always vary. Which takes us to the age-old debate about good ol' step one: what's the best way to wash your face?

For many proponents of the 'less is more' way of life, washing just with water in the morning can prevent skin from constant stripping. And we've met some water washers with great skin. But for the 'do the most' camp, keeping things squeaky clean, then feeding the skin with nourishing products is the only way to live. Many Korean skincare fans will are proponents of the multi-step cleansing process with an oil cleanser and a gentle cleanser.

So, which is correct? Skincare is ultimately an intuitive process. Listen to what your skin is telling you it needs and choose between these two methods below. Or stick with your own routine - and tell us what it is in the comments below!
On Double-Washing

January Olds is an aesthetician and founder of January Labs skincare who is self-proclaimed obsessive compulsive about washing her face, cleansing three to four times a day.

I usually wash my face in the morning, then after my workouts and before I go to bed. Some might find this a bit much, but it is really the ONLY way to keep the pores clean and small. My esthetician is always amazed by how little extractions I need when get facials….she says it’s a true testament to the product I created specifically so I could wash my face 3-4 times a day without drying my skin out. As a trained aesthetician and product educator, I can attest that all those myths on over-washing your face are not true……with the caveat that you’re using the right sulfate-free cleanser. When I created the January Labs Pure & Gentle Cleanser, the key ingredient I was looking for was Willow Bark, a natural salicylic acid to keep the skin lightly exfoliated and also help with inflammation and acne. I also made sure that the bottle was large enough to last with all the many times I wash my face a day!

On Washing With Water

Adina Grigore, founder of SW Basics, author of the Skin Cleanse explains why she only washes her face with water.

My love for washing with water started out of desperation. My skin was in a complete and total crisis. I was itchy, red, inflamed, oily and dry at the same time, and constantly breaking out. But I was doing everything "right." Cleansing, toning, moisturizing, spot treating, seruming, massaging, aromatherapying, yogaing. Plus I was eating super healthy, and my skincare routine was full of wholesome, natural products. I couldn't figure it out, so I gave up. I started rinsing with water as a break for myself, but to still feel somewhat clean. The results were miraculous and permanent. I experienced immediate relief. My skin got brighter, clearer, and calmer. To this day, I've pared back to a small handful of products I use sporadically. Otherwise, I only wash with water.

Your skin knows how to take care of itself. It produces its own moisture, flushes toxins, and kills harmful bacteria. It doesn't need your help. Water is slippery enough to cleanse your skin of excess dirt and sweat. Let your hands do the work of a face wash (we're all so afraid of our hands these days, clean them well and get over it). Not even the safest, cleanest products in the world can compete with the simplicity of water. If high-quality beauty products are your greens juice that's great, I'm not saying to get rid of them, just like I wouldn't tell you to quit drinking your greens. But I would tell you that you have to keep drinking water, too. It sounds silly but it's one of our life forces, and it's a really powerful one.

Plus, let's talk about how much time you save when you wash with water. My entire routine takes me under two minutes. If I get a little dry, I dab on some oil. When I want to add more products in, I do. But to me, the idea that you need to layer on products to get good skin is completely false. I didn't have good skin until I switched to this routine, and now I feel like I'm more in tune with my skin, while simultaneously experiencing virtually no flare-ups but way, way more free time (that I fill telling people about washing with water).

How Much Do You Know About The Plant-Based Diet?

Almost every healthy diet on the planet has one thing in common: they are plant-based. From veganism and vegetarianism to paleo and low carb diets, almost every diet designed for optimal health entails eating more plants - vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains and legumes included.

We've got nothing against good, clean animal products (in fact, ask us more and we'll tell you they're crucial!), but we embrace the idea of a plant-based diet that's loaded with a rainbow of veggies. We asked the pros from the raw wellness culinary school, PLANTLAB to break down the basics of the plant-based diet for us.

What is A Plant-Based Diet?

The popularity of plant-based diet has exploded in recent years, but what does it actually mean? As one of the only 100% plant-based culinary schools in the world, we at PLANTLAB Culinary Academy are rooted in it, and we're here to provide a clear understanding.

plant-based and vegan are not the same. The beauty of plant-based is that plants are - like the name says - simply the base of your diet and lifestyle. At its core, a plant-based diet simply consists of minimally-processed, non-animal ingredients that are often organic and local -- and thus more in season in your particular area. It is designed solely to link you more personally and healthily with the fuel you put in your body.

it's flexible. There is an inherent flexibility to plant-based that allows for a more unique, individualized diet. Plant-based can be more approachable than veganism, which is more of a mandate.

Veganism requires that its followers never use animal products of any kind, which extends into areas like fashion and beauty. Also, despite its rigidness, it is not necessarily healthier. There are many processed foods, like Oreos for example, which are vegan but definitely neither healthy nor comprised of plants.

But being plant-based isn’t just about a diet; the motives behind being plant-based can extend into other areas of daily life. As subscribers begin being more conscious about - and seeing the benefits of - what they put inside their body, the great majority of those who embrace these foodstuffs naturally start looking at the products they use on and around their body as well. It becomes more of an overall lifestyle, which allows those benefits to both grow and compound.

A plant-based lifestyle should be one where you are mindful of how food is affecting your body, mind and overall health. That’s it.

What Are the Benefits?

A plant-based diet includes foods that are nutrient-rich, containing minerals, vitamins, fats, fiber, antioxidants and protein that help the body thrive. When you eat a food in its whole form, where it has not been manipulated or processed, you are also getting it in its most nourishing form. Nature knows better than we do, after all. When you process a food, not only are you are often stripping it of its inherent nutrition, but you are also likely adding in salt, sugars and other chemicals to replace what was taken.

Simply put: Eating plant food in its natural form - or close to it - helps the body function properly, boosts the immune system, provides antioxidants and is extremely anti-inflammatory. You are no longer antagonizing your body’s system with foreign substances it neither needs nor wants, forcing it to unnecessarily work harder to process what you put in. As such, a plant-based diet has also been shown to stabilize blood sugar, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, prevent diabetes, help protect from chronic disease and autoimmune disorders and help with weight loss.

Our bodies know what they want -- this capacity is built in. Our bodies need and crave the foodstuffs that come from that natural world, with as little doctoring as possible. It’s worthwhile to start from this natural, basic point, not because this article you're reading is now saying so, but rather because your biology does.

Are you on a plant-based diet? How do you label the way you eat clean?

How to Channel The Energy of This Week’s Full Moon in Aquarius

The energy of the moon is powerful enough to control the ocean's tides -- it's a small leap to imagine it affects us humans too. As we gear up for the full moon in Aquarius this week, we're checking in with Sophie Jaffe, founder of Philosophie (and proud mama of a new baby girl!) all about the meaning of this full moon and how we can harness its transformative potential. Light up your palo santo and make it a party...

Every time a full moon comes around I get excited with energy. A full moon is a magical period for celebrating your growths and achievements at this midway point of a moon cycle, solidifying and growing your relationships and loving on yourself. A full moon is about celebration and manifestation. This is a time to gather your friends, have a dance party, go out and bask in all your women fierceness. You are a goddess!

Each full moon is charged with energy. Some people react very differently with each full moon. Take it all in and sit with whatever wave you’re riding. The full moon is a great time to self-assess yourself and your goals in order to make them a reality. It’s a time to go a bit crazy and let your wild woman out.

Bask in the sacred energy by gathering your favorite soul sisters, harness goddess power, release and let go. Prepare for a vibrant, energetic circle. Or go out for the night and dance until dawn then hold a small intimate, sacred moon circle in the morning. I also recommend setting out all your crystals overnight so they can recharge.

A Ceremony for the Full Moon in Aquarius + Lunar Eclipse

The full moon on July 27th rests in Aquarius. If you needed a cosmic sign for change, then this high-vibe, bold full moon is it! While you won’t get a view of the eclipse in America, its energy is so powerful you can feel it right down to your bones. Free-flowing Aquarius is the sign of collaboration and togetherness. It’s all about uniting around a higher cause and the creative impulse to fight for our beliefs. This sign is more about universal love than intense one-on-ones. This water sign moves with the energy of the tides. It’s a great time to unite with friends, family or strangers around a value you believe in down to your core. It's a time of political activism; this full moon energy gives you the power to truly harness all your beliefs.

What to Gather for a Full Moon Ceremony

Stones and crystals or dried herbs:
Set out anything earthly in nature.
I also recommend setting out all the crystals around your home to recharge for the next cycle.

Candles:
Ignites your passion and causes a spark of internal energy
(use white, dark blue or green).

Feathers/essential oils:
Healing and symbolizes a new beginning
(we recommend patchouli or cypress oils).

Journal + pen:
Essential to harness any thoughts and emotions that arise during your circle.

Stones:
Obsidian, clear quartz, garnet, tiger's eye, smoky quartz.

Sage or palo santo

Moon deck

Journal prompts: What change do you want to see in your life? Does everything in your life currently have a need or purpose? Is there something that doesn’t fulill you?

AFFIRMATION: Burn palo santo or sage, and repeat this affirmation out loud five times or more: When I allow myself to believe in my power, I can create magic.

Are You An Aspirational Shopper? (It May Not Mean What You Think)

Do you consider yourself an aspirational shopper? We know -- more labels, but we find this one interesting. For years, marketers have defined an aspirational shopper as one who is obsessed with luxury labels and who projects a sense of self based on their proximity to top-dollar trends. While we know the 'label whore' shoppers still exist and aren't mad about it (heck, we all have that friend who can't stop with the LV or the Gucci), more often, we find that modern shoppers have moved away from big brand names towards smaller 'brandless' brand - maybe a few responsible ones too.

This vibe has become a trend unto itself which stirs some mixed feelings for us over here. Things get complicated when something cause-based becomes trendy. However, on the whole, we embrace the new definition of the aspirational shopper that global trend reporter GlobeScan defines this way: "materialists who believe they have a responsibility to purchase products that are good for the environment and society."

Interesting, right? This alternative definition of 'aspirational shopper' is right up our alley, as well as a continually growing trend that can't be ignored. We believe the huge upswing in health and wellness interest has helped all of us become more thoughtful consumers. Once the realization sets in that we have to be our own advocates when it comes to shopping clean food and beauty, the jig is up on fashion, home goods and other consumer endeavors too. Non-toxic living is a slippery slope that often begins with clean eating.

According to GlobeScan's report, Millennials drive this kind of responsible buying behavior, but the trend is cross-generational as people of all ages become more aware, concerned and empowered in their buying habits. The smartest brands have harnessed that sense of collaborative effort in which consumers feel like they are part of the good happening.

Whether it's shopping brands that are sustainable, green, non-toxic, ethical, socially responsible or all of the above, most of us are inspired by this trend toward business that's better for all of us. If, like us, you identify as an aspirational shopper, here a few issues you might identify with and that all of us should keep top of mind to keep ourselves responsibly engaged...

Green washing. Being a socially responsible company these days is as cool as having nap pods and a bike rack behind the reception desk. Beware the green-washing products and campaigns some brands launch to give consumers the impression that they're sustainable, all the while continuing on with largely irresponsible practices like toxic products or mis-managed waste behind the scenes. We've all seen it, though it's sometimes tough to spot. Don't be an 'easy' shopper; be savvy and think about a brand's big picture.

Tit for tat. On the other hand, are you expecting too much from your brands? Expect a billion dollar corporation to pivot toward waste-free products within the year? We applaud the passion, but don't forget to be practical. Sustainability and an increase in social responsibility are major efforts and big ships turn slowly. Don't forget how hard it was to turn your own makeup supply or kitchen pantry into havens of toxin-free living. Change takes time. And we're all in this together.

Vote with your dollar. We digress. Every purchase we make supports the interworkings of a company whose operations have real impact. Not sure whether to spend the extra dollar on the brand you know is doing things right? We totally understand. Make wise choices, but consider your money an investment in the kind of food (or fashion) system you want to be a part of.

Consumer break down. No, not-post consumer recycling -- we're talking about full-on consumer break-down. Which is how we feel sometimes when trying to buy a simple bottle of soap and deciding which brand is actually the most mindful choice on the shelf. ('Didn't that small organic company just get purchased? Are they still legit? This bottle is recycled, but the other brand has better social responsibility claims!') All the marketing efforts and the steep learning curve of being a responsible consumer can be down right overwhelming and can sometimes lead to complete consumer burn out. Pace yourself.

Giving back. We love it when a company gives back to their community or cause of choice. But is our passive contribution to the effort by buying more products for ourselves really making a difference? Fortunately, the answer is yes. However, giving this way can provide us with a false sense of accomplishment that shouldn't replace our own thoughtful efforts to support the causes we care about directly.

Transparency Part of the surge in corporate social responsibility has to do with transparency. In the digital age, it's simply not as easy for companies to hide or ignore poor practices from the prying eyes of hyper-aware consumers. But, remember that transparency goes both ways. As consumers, we may detest the effects of fossil fuels or plastics on the environment, but 95% of us rely heavily on them. As we wean ourselves off the substances in question, we've got to have patience - most importantly, with ourselves.

Do you consider yourself an aspirational shopper? What do you think about how central these themes have begun to feel in our cultural conversations? What are your most important shopping habits and where do you see all of this going?
