Read Between The Vines: How To Stop Killing Your Houseplants

Why what are your New Year's resolutions? Yes, plants are great and all the rage lately for numerous reasons, but our goal for 2018 is to keep more of them alive. These tips on how to stop killing your houseplants from our friends at Free People should do the trick...

A few years ago my friend said he wanted to get a dog. He had never had an animal in his life and didn’t seem like the type of guy who was capable of caring for one. I teased him and insisted he get a potted plant instead, as I felt it might be a lower bar. “If you don’t kill the plant,” I assured, “then you can get a dog.”

He killed the plant and got the dog. Luckily the dog’s happier than ever; seems like he and the pooch made a better pair. The incident of course got me thinking: plants don’t come easily to a lot of us, and they are by no means equivalent to caring for an animal. It’s like the two categories — pets and plants — require slightly different orientations. Of course you can develop the sensitivity and sensibilities for both plant care and pet care — and many of us do. I’d check those two boxes myself, having grown up with both plenty of pets and plants; and especially now that I’m living with a plant-pecking foster hen (not necessarily recommended for city apartments) — and an inordinate number of plants — to the tune of 700 or so. (I know, ridiculously excessive, but it’s like paradise in apartment-form).

The reality is, however, that plants don’t communicate in the same way that pets do. Plants are more introverted, whereas pets are the extroverts of the household. A dog will let you know when she needs to go out — and if you fail to do so, you’ll likely wind up with a mess on the floor. Cats are a bit more sensible when it comes to these matters, as most are potty-trained. But I had a cat that would throw mail at me in the mornings if she didn’t get fed on time. Plants do no such thing. Or when they speak to us, they do so in their own quiet way.

Over the years I’ve learned to watch out for certain signals from my plants to learn what they’re telling me. Sometimes signs like a yellowing leaf or browning around the edges can mean multiple things, but you can often use process of elimination to get to the root of the matter (every plant pun intended). Here are some of the major signs and what to do about them so you can finally stop killing your houseplants:

Wilted Plant

Your plant is dehydrated. If it’s really flaccid, give it water immediately, but if it’s just starting to wilt, water it in the early morning hours with room temp water, as that is the best time of day to water plants.

Brown Tips

Your plant is likely suffering from lack of humidity. Get the plant a humidifier, give it a pebble tray below with water, or create a plant huddle so the transpiration — or the evaporation of water from the plant’s leaves — can create a little more humidity in the surrounding atmosphere.

Leaf Drop

Your plant is shocked. Leaf drop typically happens after transplanting, moving from one place to another, or taking from a high light to low light area. The plant needs to acclimatize to its current environment and sometimes this can take time.

Yellowing Leaves + Brown Spots

Your plant is sunburned. If your plant is close to a window, particularly a window with a southern- or western-exposure, then it may be getting too much sun. Either pull the plant back from the window (even two feet can make a difference) or add a diaphanous shade to cut the light.

Yellow Leaves at Bottom

Yellow leaves can mean many things, but yellow leaves at the bottom of the plant can mean that it needs some fertilizer, or that the plant leaves are just getting old and dying back. Once the leaves turn brown, you can snip off; and if the leaves continue to turn yellow at a rapid rate, then give a balanced liquid fertilizer, like a 10-10-10, diluted by half while watering during the growing season (March – September).

Yellow Leaves (General)

Yellowing leaves that happen throughout the plant often means that the plant has been mismanaged in the watering department. You either watered it too much or too little, so try to get a sense of what your plant’s needs are and get it on a proper watering schedule.

Here’s How To Handle The Full Moon on New Year’s Day 2018

New year, new you, new moon. A powerfully transitional year is getting the exit it deserves with a full moon January 1, 2018 - including all of the energetic shifts this astro-event is known to bring. January's full moon is the wolf moon and is also dubbed a supermoon this year. Here's what you should know, plus a ritual to put all that extra energy to good use from the ladies of Energy Muse...

What could possibly amplify the already charged energy of New Year’s? Try a full moon — like the kind we are looking forward to this January first! That’s right, we’re in for one intense evening of energy, and if we take advantage of this opportunity, that can be a very beneficial thing. A full moon, like New Year’s itself, carries a reputation for inspiring chaos. Rather than allowing this powerful energy to overwhelm you, choose to utilize its influence in a positive way.

This exciting and rare phenomenon is a great chance to start the year off with an energetic bang. Charge your spirit (and your crystals) under the light of the full moon, and set the tone for a vibrant, focused and energetically elevated year.

To embrace the energy of the evening, I have created this ritual to celebrate the New Year’s full moon. Do this ritual in a comfortable area outside, with the full moon in sight. We want to bathe in the moonlight so that our spirit and our crystals can soak in as much of the night’s energizing potential as possible. I recommend that the crystals you use in this ritual will be the same crystals you’ll use for every full-moon ritual you do for the rest of the year.

Through harnessing the energy of infinite potential that a full moon and start of the new year represents, you can proceed into 2018 more invigorated than ever before.

For a slightly more complex ritual for setting intentions with the moon, check out the "Living in Tune With the Moon" chapter of my book, Crystal Muse: Everyday Rituals to Tune In to the Real You.

Using Spectrolite vs Crystal Sphere:
I suggest using either a spectrolite stone or a quartz crystal sphere for this ritual. Choose the one you’re most attracted to.

Spectrolite... is ideal because it is a stone that helps you accept and balance both light and dark energy as you work to realize your destiny. We go through a lot of ups and downs in the course of a year, and it can helpful to tune into an energy that will ground us in the constant focus of our goals.

A clear quartz sphere... is an equally valuable crystal tool to use due its ability to amplify energy, program intentions and bring clarity to situations. Using a quartz crystal sphere in this ritual will allow you to better manifest your intentions throughout the year. By guiding you toward a greater perspective, the elevated energy of clear quartz will remind you not to lose sight of your intentions by getting caught up in distractions that are beneath you.

The Clean Guide to Homemade Broths + Stocks

Behind every great soup is a great broth, loaded with natural flavor and nutrients galore. It doesn't matter if you're a master chef or just scored your first stock pot: if you lock down that liquid foundation first the rest of soup-making is a breeze (and basically guaranteed to be delicious).

Below is your ultimate guide to basic broths, from the pages of Rebecca Katz's Clean Soups. Rebecca is kinda a big deal in the culinary world. These recipes are cleaner than the classics, but just as immunity-boosting and nutritious as the OGs.

Make a batch of bone broth, use some for soup and sip the rest throughout the week; freeze chicken stock in an ice cube tray and add to sautéed greens as they cook; toss some diced veggies into a mug of mineral broth at work and call it a day. However you plant to use these broth recipes, just be sure you do...

Magic Mineral Broth | This is my signature savory broth. Its creation was that wonderful moment when everything came together in the kitchen to create something truly healing. (I must have been channeling someone’s grandmother!) Literally thousands of people have spoken with me about the positive impact this broth has had on their lives. You’ll be amazed at how revitalizing it is. With carrots, onions, leek, celery, potatoes and more, it’s a veritable veggie-palooza and can be used as a base for nearly all the soups in this book. In a bowl or sipped as a tea, it’s the perfect cleansing broth.

Nourishing Bone Broth| Put this one in the time machine. Bone broths are trendy these days, but in fact they’ve been around since the ancient Greeks. It turns out the gelatin that seeps from the bones as they simmer is great for gut health and digestion. Beef bones also contain high amounts of calcium and magnesium, which are great for your bones. One note: Invest in pasture-raised, organic bones, if at all possible, to ensure you’re getting the highest-quality ingredients possible, free of hormones and antibiotics.

Old-Fashioned Chicken Stock| Some things you learn at your father’s knee. But chicken stock? I learned that at my mother’s elbow, watching from my perch on the yellow Formica kitchen countertop as she reenacted her Nana’s chicken stock note by note. Onions, carrots, celery, chicken… it’s down-home, old-time comfort in a pot. I can’t think of a better way to get vital nutrients, with a flavor that will leave you longing for more. Is LED Light Therapy The Wellness Treatment of The Future?

We've seen a slew of unusual wellness modalities from our little perch in the wellness world. More and more, we're seeing a growing interest in these unconventional wellness protocols - from ancient herbs to modern new therapies like the below.

Of course, not all unusual products and modalities are equal. We share only the best of what we discover and experience and, recently, we stumbled into the promising health benefits of LED light therapy.

Before sharing this interview with InLight Medical's Heather Parkin, we experimented with her treatment recommendations for over three months. We tested the therapy's effectiveness on a family member with an autoimmune condition. While we'd love to wait even further to report a more dramatic effect, we can definitely report that after the three month period, we're seeing a shift.

Does the concept of fighting pain and inflammation with innocent little LED lights seem like a stretch? We get it. Read through Heather's compelling interview below, including her own sister's remarkable experience with the therapy that blew us away.

The Chalkboard Mag: What is Low Level Light Therapy or LED Light Therapy in a nutshell?

Heather Parkin: LED Light Therapy, which is also known as Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT), is called 'low level' because it’s noninvasive, painless and cool to the touch. LED light therapy assists your body in its natural ability to heal. All living things - plants, animals, humans - are built with the ability to heal ourselves naturally. Low-Level Light Therapy, or LED Light Therapy, reduces inflammation, increases circulation and reduces pain. Studies have shown that by increasing our blood circulation, it helps support our innate healing process, allowing our bodies to do what they are meant to: self heal. Scientific effects of increased circulation include:

+ cell stimulation that leads to pain relief and tissue healing
+ improved muscle performance and mental clarity
+ cecreased swelling from injuries
+ detoxifying effects

TCM: How does LED light therapy work?

HP: LED Light Therapy is a unique therapy that harnesses the healing powers of infrared, red and blue light. InLight Medical Systems uses a carefully timed sequence of settings, known as pulses, to create an environment in which change may occur more rapidly. This gentle pulsing emits special wavelengths of light energy that dramatically increase circulation to injury sites and areas of chronic pain. So, if you think about the way plants absorb sunlight from the atmosphere, well, our cells beneath our skin absorb light energy the same way. When we absorb this light energy, it activates our body’s natural healing response. The result is a rapid relief of discomfort, improvement in sensation and regeneration of damaged tissues.

Because Light Therapy is naturally effective on a cellular level, not only does it relieve pain, but it addresses the underlying condition by stimulating the body’s innate healing ability -- something that painkillers cannot do. LED Light Therapy is effective, non-abrasive, non-invasive and restorative.

TCM: What are most people using the light therapy device for? I know it can help with such a wide variety of conditions, can you bucket them into a few categories?

HP: Research has shown that chronic inflammation is the number-one cause of most diseases (inflammatory disorders), and without inflammation, disease cannot grow. Because LT assists the body in its natural ability to heal, by reducing your inflammation and increasing your blood circulation, you can use the lights for just about anything. Inflammatory issues like arthritis, Crohn’s, asthma; digestive issues like IBS, leaky gut, colitis; thyroid Issues like Hashimoto's and hyperthyroidism; neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, peripheral neuropathy, MS, migraines, fibromyalgia, traumatic brain injuries and all of the symptoms that come along with that; hormonal imbalances like PCOS, endometriosis, menopause, PMS symptoms; chronic pain, athletic performance and recovery; PTSD, depression, the list goes on! You can use them at any age and on any living, breathing thing! I even use the lights on my plants at home. I’m that ‘crazy plant lady.’ The motto in my house ‘go on the lights.’ You have a cut? Sunburn? Go on the lights. You are feeling under the weather? Go on the lights. You hurt your knee running? Over-extended in yoga? Go on the lights! Your pet has joint pain? Put them on the lights… You get the idea.

TCM: How long has the therapy been around for?

HP: The use of light and color to help heal our bodies dates back thousands of years. Ancient civilizations across the Earth respected the powers of light and color and recognized the healing properties they possessed. By embracing our roots, going back to the basics and combining it with the technology we have today, we are able to create cutting edge devices like these. It’s funny how something so very simple, so very basic and organic, is becoming the future of healing. Color, light and sound: That’s where we’re headed. Society, as a whole, is starting to take healthcare into its own hands. People are sick of prescription drugs and all side effects that come along with them. We are looking for something else, something natural, something less invasive, something that works!

TCM: Do most people think it's a bit nuts when they first learn about it? How do you help people wrap their brains around this?

HP: Sometimes, yes, they have a hard time. Sometimes they look at me like I’m a total quack! You know, it’s not mainstream, it’s not the norm. Again, it’s cutting edge technology. But, I find if you listen to what their needs are first, their health issues at hand, their concerns, then it’s easier to explain how the lights can help them. When you tell people that the lights are not here to cure or heal them, they are here to assist their body in its own natural healing ability, people understand that. Also, education is key. There is so much information out there, on PubMed.com there are over 3,500 articles on this therapy alone. If you Google 'low level light therapy' or "photobiomodulation + (your health issue at hand)" so many articles and studies will come up. I encourage all of my clients to be their own healthcare advocates. Knowledge is key when dealing with your health, your body and your life.

TCM: Would you share a few client improvement stories?

HP: I have so many, it’s hard to choose one! My sister’s story is super powerful! She was in a skiing accident on Mt. Hood. A man was skiing down the mountain, taking about a 20 ft jump, and landed on my sister’s head. She had to be life-flighted off the mountain, to the ER. She suffered from a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). As you can imagine, all the symptoms you get from a TBI: head shocks, migraines, blurred vision, slurred speech, memory loss, depression, anger, etc. She was experiencing it all. She was on major pain medications: 24 mg of Dilaudid (which is a form of morphine) and 2,000 mg of gabapentin a day, seeing five to six different specialists and nothing was helping. After about six months of this, some friends introduced her to the lights. She did six sessions in two days and was able to get off all her pain medications. In two weeks, she started seeing small, positive changes in her memory, speech and vision. Fast forward several months later, using the lights twice a day, my sister had her life back. She was healthy and no longer suffered from a TBI.

One of my younger clients, she’s 28, was pretty sick before starting Light Therapy. She suffered from Lyme disease, adrenal fatigue, hormonal imbalances and digestive issues; that’s so much to deal with at such a young age. It was heartbreaking. Here was this young, beautiful, talented girl who was unable to live her life free of pain. It kept her from working and traveling; it debilitated her and kept her from living her life to its fullest. She had tried so many different treatments and protocols, but nothing helped her fully recover. She was looking for something, that one thing that would help. Then she found me on Instagram, and that is how she started her journey with Light Therapy. She has been doing the lights now for about six months, and is feeling fantastic. I actually had the honor of meeting her in person, this past summer, because she has been able to start traveling again, and she was in San Diego. And recently, I received a text message from her, stating that she was interviewing for a job and took her first exercise class again! Do you know how amazing that is? She has her life back, working, traveling, exercising, feeling healthy again! She is able to now start living her best life!

TCM: What is most people's journey with the lights? Do most try them skeptical at first?

HP: If you believe you are going to heal, you will. Your mind is half the battle. If people are skeptical, their minds are the roadblock to their healing. If they are open and want to heal, then there is no room for skepticism. All of my clients are blown away by the results they see. One of my favorite things about my job is when I get a text message from a client saying how amazing they feel, how the lights have changed their life, that it’s the best investment they have ever made. Remember, you can use them for just about anything - so it changes the way you respond to your health. For example, a couple weeks ago, I injured my wrist in yoga, practicing inversions. Definitely sprained or strained it, and I was in a lot of pain. In the past, I would have gotten Xrays, had the doctor bandage it up, taken a painkiller, etc. Instead, I have been wrapping it in the lights daily. A week and a half later, I’m pain free, back at yoga practicing my handstands. Not to mention, I’ve saved myself hundreds of dollars in medical bills!

TCM: Let's talk about the skin rejuvenation aspects of this. Most women are becoming familiar with LED based therapies from similar treatments in the spa. Is this the same or different?

HP: LED Light Therapy can boost collagen production, promote tissue regeneration and reduce inflammation! Bye bye puffy eyes, fine lines and wrinkles! Because our skin is directly affected by what’s going on in our bodies, we want to make sure we work on the body as a whole. When your liver and kidneys aren’t functioning properly, it can start to show through your skin. With InLight Medical Systems, you are able to work on your entire body, not just your face; working from the inside out. Unlike when you go see your facialist and you get a LED Light Therapy Facial, they are just working on your face. Which, is great, I’m not discounting its effectiveness, but they are not working on the main organs that support your skin. When you support your skin through properly functioning organs, the result is beautiful, regenerated, glowing skin!

Have you tried LED light therapy yourself? We'd love to hear about it.

Inside The Secret Gardens At the Huntington Library

Fine - the gardens at The Huntington Library may not be secret, but we're often shocked to find out just how many Angelenos have never been inside this horticultural wonderland.

Recently, we dragged a small group of friends across the city to Pasadena for a day of library tours, art gallery wanders, garden walks and high tea inside the Huntington's sprawling rose gardens. We can't recommend our afternoon itinerary any more highly. Here's what the Library is all about and why you should plan a visit soon...

+ The Huntington's collection of rare books include the Ellesmere manuscript of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, a Gutenberg Bible on vellum, and a world-class collection of the early editions of Shakespeare’s works. T

+ The Library collection is gigantic and includes more than seven million manuscripts; 420,000 rare books; and 1.3 million photographs, prints and ephemera. Included in the Library's collection of photographs are all seven Ansel Adams portfolios.

+ The Library is one of the largest and most complete research libraries in the United States in the fields of British and American history and literature.

+ There are two art galleries on property, the Huntington Art Gallery and the Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art. The first houses one of the most distinguished collections of 18th- and 19th-century British paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts outside London, including Thomas Gainsborough’s Blue Boy.

+ Inside another D.C.-like building, The Dibner Hall of History and Science shows the development of astronomy, natural history, medicine and light.

+ In 1919, Henry and Arabella Huntington created The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, including Huntington’s outstanding collection of rare books and manuscripts. Henry and Arabella are both buried on the property in a mausoleum designed by John Russell Pope, the architect who also built the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C.

+ The botanical gardens encompass 120 acres and are broken down into an almost Disney Park-like experience, leading garden goers from one extremely different environment to the next including a subtropical garden, desert garden, Japanese garden, rose garden, and a forest of bamboo. The gorgeous structure inside the Japanese garden is considered one of the best examples of early twentieth-century Japanese architecture in the United States.

+ A giant 16,000 square-foot greenhouse on property is filled with lowland tropical rain forest, a cloud forest, and a carnivorous plant bog and plant petting zoo.

+ Inside the property's beautiful rose garden, a small cottage houses the Rose Garden Tea Room where tea, champagne and all forms of modern tea sandwiches and cakes are served, including vegan and gluten-free options.

The Art of Stopping Time: 5 Un-Resolutions For Busy People

If this year taught us anything it's that learning to 'be chill' is way more challenging than we thought -- and more important to prioritize than ever. We're taking tips from Pedram Shojai, 'The Urban Monk' and his new book, 'The Art of Stopping Time' which is all about finding more opportunity to enjoy life, even when you don't have a second to spare...

One of the biggest complaints I hear from my students is that they are too stressed out and don’t have enough time to get everything done. We’re all struggling to find time in our lives, but somehow there’s less of it to go around each year. We’re too tired to think, too wired to focus, less efficient than we want to be and guilty about not getting enough time with our loved ones. We all know that we feel starved for time, but what are we actually doing about it? Precious little.

My newest book, The Art of Stopping Time: Practical Mindfulness for Busy People, is designed to change that, to bring us back to a healthier connection with time and achieve Time Prosperity.

Time Prosperity means having the time to accomplish what you desire in life without feeling compressed, stressed, overburdened or hurried. It brings us peace, better decisions, better health, more family time and re-alignment of our priorities in a way that helps us bring back fulfillment and purpose.

In The Art of Stopping Time, I walk readers through ancient spiritual practices and practical life skills that help us stop time and achieve Time Prosperity. Below are a few of my favorite tips to living a better life!

5 BREATHS Is All It Takes

Set a timer for 30 minutes to go off throughout your day. Each time the timer goes off, take five deep breaths from your lower abdomen and focus on those breaths, then go about your day. This is a quick fix to reset the rhythm of your day and slow down for a less hurried and more energized day.

ASSEMBLE YOUR LIFE GARDEN

Imagine your life as a garden: You have limited water and need to leave space for each plant to flourish. Think about what’s important to you, list these items and then imagine how much energy must go into the sustained growth of these items. Get realistic about how many plants you need to grow and cultivate and which plants are weeds that take up valuable resources in your life. Once you have decided how much water to allocate to make your plants flourish, you can avoid over-commitment and stress.

SET Meaningful RITUALS

Let’s look at any rituals you observe in your life. What are they and why do you do them? So many of the things we do in modern times come from ancient origins. They used to mean something. What are you doing in life that helps you stop time and connect with that which is meaningful? Can you be better at it? The point is to find something that serves you and allow it to be an anchor in your life. Find a way to connect with what you need and make a plan to build healthier practices into your life.

DOING NOTHING

Practice being. It may take a while to get the hang of it, and you may think you’re going crazy, but that’s just the crazy talking. Take ten minutes to simply sit through the discomfort and just be. Watch how your mind is always looking for something to do. It takes Zen monks years to really master this, but if you actually commit, you will reach the peaceful serenity of a relaxed mind.

King of Oils: 8 Powerful Uses for Sacred Frankincense Oil

Want the easiest health tip ever? Begin integrating essential oils into you usual wellness practice (or keep doing so if you're already on board).

Discover some powerful pairings here -- but few oils multi-task the way frankincense oil can. This healing powerhouse is one of our favorite natural remedies for wellness issues of all shapes and severity. Read below as functional medicine expect, Dr. Josh Axe explains the mind-body benefits and top uses for frankincense oil...

Essential oils are organic compounds that come from the bark, flower, fruit, leaf, seed, or root of a plant or tree, and these oils are so potent that just one drop can have a positive effect on health. Used topically, aromatically or ingested, each essential oil has its own unique set of health benefits. Frankincense, often called the “king of oils”, is one of my personal favorites that I use daily.

Frankincense comes from the resin of trees of the genus Boswellia. It has been used for thousands of years for spiritual purposes (you may be familiar with its history as one of the first gifts given to baby Jesus by the wise men). It also has a lengthy history as a traditional medicinal and beauty aid.

But ancient history aside, frankincense definitely has several benefits that warrant its use in today’s modern times. Here are eight of the top uses for frankincense essential oil:

Reduces Inflammation

It is widely known that inflammation is at the root of most diseases today. And because frankincense oil contains boswellic acids, which research has shown can reduce the inflammation associated with inflammatory diseases like asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, frankincense can be a powerful first life of defense against many common ailments. When used topically, frankincense has even been shown to improve common inflammatory skin issues such acne, eczema and psoriasis.

Improves Oral Hygiene

When it comes to oral health, frankincense oil is a perfect addition to a daily routine because of its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. A study published in 2011 looked at Frankincense’s ability to improve plaque-induced gingivitis, and the findings were impressive. After frankincense treatment, participants showed significant reduction in key measures of oral hygiene status including gingival index and the plaque index.

I highly recommend looking for natural toothpastes and mouthwashes that contain frankincense or including frankincense oil in your own homemade toothpaste.

Relieves Joint + Muscle Pain

As a natural anti-inflammatory agent, frankincense oil is a great holistic option for fighting muscle aches and joint pain, and applying the oil to an area of concern can help to boost circulation and decrease pain. For sore muscles or joints, simply combine several drops of frankincense oil with a carrier oil (like coconut) to massage into the problem area.

Frankincense is even recommended to be taken internally to help prevent cartilage loss and inhibit the autoimmune process for patients with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or bursitis symptoms.

A Natural Household Cleaner + Air Purifier

Skip the toxic cleaners and try using essential oils to clean your home. As a natural antiseptic, frankincense oil can help to kill germs that are lurking on the many surfaces in your home. Using it in an essential oil diffuser can also help to cleanse the air, especially if you or someone you live with has recently been sick. Not only will it disinfect areas of your home or office, but frankincense acts as a natural deodorizer with its sweet, yet refreshing, scent.

Relieves Stress + Anxiety

A big plus to using frankincense oil to clean and disinfect your living spaces is that the scent left behind (often described as sweet, musky and earthy all in one) can help to naturally calm you down. How so? Frankincense is known to have anxiolytic properties, which is a fancy way of saying it can help reduce anxiety. If you’re not in the mood to clean, just simply diffuse frankincense oil into the air and let the stress of the day melt away.

Acts as an Anti-Ager

Frankincense oil is considered sacred in the spiritual realm, and it’s also pretty divine when it comes to its effects on skin health. It’s not uncommon to see frankincense essential oil on a list of natural ways to combat the signs of aging, and the oil can be diluted and applied anywhere you have fine lines or saggy skin.

Reduces Scars + Stretch Marks

When used topically, frankincense oil can aid wound healing and may decrease the appearance of scars. It may also help decrease the appearance of stubborn stretch marks. To reap these benefits, simply mix two to three drops of frankincense with equal parts of a base oil (such as almond, jojoba or coconut) or a lotion, and apply the mixture directly to the skin.

Helps Fight Cancer

Research also points towards frankincense oil, specifically that from the resin of the Boswellia sacra tree, as a natural anti-cancer agent. In a 2011 scientific study, frankincense oil was shown to induce cancer cell death in human breast cancer cell lines, similar to previous research conducted with human bladder cancer cells.

Frankincense is known to have blood-thinning effects, so people with problems related to blood clotting should not use frankincense before consulting with their health care provider. When purchasing frankincense oil or any essential oil, you always want to look for brands that are 100 percent pure and certified USDA organic. These are the highest grade essential oils with the greatest healing properties.

The 6 Best + Worst Plant Gifts According To LA’s Premiere Nursey

All we want for Christmas is plants -- and maybe a few other pretty objects.

The pros at LA's top plant paradise, Rolling Greens, narrowed down the best and worst plant gifts to give this holiday season. Instead of bringing your hostess a bouquet that's bound to wilt in a few days, consider one of these lush, live and absolutely lovely plant gifts instead...

5 Best Plant Gifts Christmas Cactus: These plants grow really fast and have the temperament of a succulent.

Mini Trees: This time of year, rosemary and lavender are sold as mini trees as well as cedar and pine. Perfect holiday hostess gifts - and they smell good too!

Paperwhites: Simple yet elegant blooms that are easy to care for, making them a great hostess gift.

Amaryllis: Beautiful big blooms.

Poinsettia: Classic and bring a bright pop of color; they're not as poisonous to animals as they are made out to be. They can upset a cat's stomach, but a large amount needs to be ingested for it to be a severe problem.

5 Worst Plant Gifts Maidenhair fern: These ferns grow naturally along streams and waterfalls, so trying to make it thrive indoors can be a challenge. It is a nice alternative to cut flowers, however.

Fiddle Leaf Fig: These trees are finicky, finicky, finicky. They require very, very bright light, warm temperatures and high humidity.

Dumb Cane: This plant is highly toxic to animals and shouldn't be gifted to anyone with furry friends or young children.

Hydrangea: Two words: water hog.

Firestick: This plant has highly irritating and has toxic sap in its branches when broken open.

Got your plant? Great! Now learn to keep it alive with these simple tips.

Our 12 Best Healthy Cocktails To Mix Up ASAP

We've said it a million times and we'll say it a million more: balance is key to living well. For some of us, that might come in the form of the occasional boozy beverage, and the ones below are some of our all-time faves.

Each of these pretty little libations are crafted with real ingredients -- not mystery syrups and sugary mixers -- producing the closest thing to a "healthy cocktail" we could ever imagine.

From a fizzy kombucha and vodka-based bev to a farm-to-table masterpiece (a soulmate for brunch), these healthy cocktails are fun, flavorful and spiked with just the right amount of wellness vibes.

TCM TIP: To dress up your drink even more, consider making these flower ice cubes, floral syrups, or simply snag a new pretty vessel from The Shop!

Sparkling Honey + Coconut Punch | If there was ever a drink for new years or other sparkly celebrations this is it, bright bubbly with a gentle buzz to match. MAKE IT

Manuka + Mezcal | Sweet and smokey, plus a refreshing blast of blood orange and beet juice blend. We love the rich red color for halloween but the bold flavor is something you can enjoy all year MAKE IT

Watermelon Jalapeño | This is nothing short of summer in a glass. We used Pressed Juicery's limited edition watermelon jalapeno juice, which you wont be able to get your hands on but you can easily make your own. MAKE IT

Persimmon Rosé Sangria | As long as persimmons are in season we want to get them into every dish we can. This big batch cocktail is easy to make ahead, perfect with a holiday meal but just as joy-inducing any other time. MAKE IT
