A Gorgeous Rice Pudding Recipe for All Your Cozy Needs

Double tapping a pretty bowl is just a few degrees shy of scarfing it down, right? We did both with this beautiful rice pudding recipe from one of our newest Instagram crushes, Christin of @tinytine21. The self-titled "bowl enthusiast" caught our attention when she launched her gorgeous feed and held it steady with her recipe for strawberry coconut nice cream. The spiced rice pudding recipe below is just as pretty, just as easy and offers health benefits you'd never expect form something this cozy...

I know, I know, rice pudding does not sound sexy but I was looking for an alternative to porridge. I have seen so many overnight oats recipes all over the Internet and I was reading about the benefits of rice. I guess not many people are aware, rice is so good for you! Also, for wintertime, warm comfort-food bowls are essential.

Rice provides fast and instant energy, regulates and improves bowel movements, stabilizes blood sugar levels, and slows down the aging process, while also providing an essential source of vitamin B1 to the body. Other benefits include its ability to boost skin health, increase the metabolism, aid in digestion, reduce high blood pressure, help weight-loss efforts, improve the immune system and provide protection against dysentery, cancer and heart disease.

5 Sustainable Fashion Myths + The Truths You Need to Know

Branded with buzzwords we see all over the place now, sustainable fashion can be a confusing concept to latch onto - especially for those who aren't already eyes-deep into it. We love the way Darling Magazine has broken it down for us, offering a clean-cut lesson for newbies and an inspiring refresher crash-course for current obsessees...

The world of sustainability is dipped, breaded, and fried in misconceptions. Every aisle we walk down at our local grocery store has words like “organic,” “eco-friendly,” and “better for the environment,” listed all over them in beautiful hues of blues and greens. But what does sustainability really mean? What does it mean to me or us as a society? We’re beginning to understand that the processes we have used for oh-so-long are not the best of the best, and it is time for a revolution.

It may come as a surprise, but according to Alternatives Journal’s article, “How the Fashion Industry is Picking up the Threads After Rana Plaza,” the fashion industry has the highest use and pollution of freshwater. It takes about 2,700 liters of water to make one cotton t-shirt and 17-20% of industrial water pollution comes from textile dyeing and treatment. That’s a lot of water.

To help debunk some of the myths, here are the five most common misconceptions of sustainability when it comes to the fashion industry or slow fashion...

"Why worry about fashion? It doesn’t affect the environment."

Actually, it does. It affects more than the environment; it affects the air you breathe, the water you drink, and the food you eat. The clothes you wear can even be immersed in chemicals and dyes that seep into your fragile skin.

The fashion industry is the second largest pollutant in the world, right behind the oil and gas industry. If you think about the processes used to create a garment piece, it is pretty simple. Fabric is created from fibers, which are grown in the earth. The earth has been impacted by humans’ use of pesticides and GMOs for faster and more efficient production of these fibers.

Those pesticides and GMOs are then washed into our lakes, rivers, and absorbed into our soil. This water is then consumed by us, wildlife, and vegetation. We then eat and drink the end-result of this process. Not only are we consuming potentially harmful substances internally, we are consuming them externally. The Huffington Post stated that it takes “almost a 1/3 pound of synthetic fertilizers to grow one pound of raw cotton; and it takes just under one pound of raw cotton to make one t-shirt.” When converting cotton into clothing, many hazardous materials are used to create the products; materials like heavy metals, flame retardants, ammonia, phthalates and formaldehyde, just to name a few. These harmful chemicals get into the fabrics we put next to our skin every day.

Another unsettling point is that many times these clothes are then manufactured in countries that are receiving barely enough pay and supervision to keep afloat. They don’t have time for pesticides. They are working to create a product quick enough so that the wildly anxious consumer can enjoy it at the time requested. But, at what cost?

"It’s too hard to find sustainable brands."

We live in a world saturated with social media, the internet, and non-stop chatter on up-and-coming innovations. I believe that if there is a push and desire to find good brands, then there is a way. If you are on the hunt for sustainable brands, then look no further than your Google search bar. Searching the simple terms “sustainable fashion brands,” feeds you a list of articles and blogs on brands locally and abroad that can provide you with all you need to live a life of green power. The results bring up powerhouses like Refinery29, The Good Trade, and Marie Claire sharing their countdowns on amazing sustainable brands where you can get your fashion fix. There is even a directory provided by Eco Fashion World. Just search it, it’s simple as that; if not for you, then for your kids and their kids and their kids.

"Sustainable brands are too expensive and not feasible for every day."

Many of us are familiar with, or maybe even known, for splurge purchases. It doesn’t matter the cost or the necessity, if it is reasonably discounted then we must get it, and we must be the first. Price does not seem a deterring factor when it comes to quality. Think about the last time you considered not buying added-hormone milk. Did you even think twice about it? Probably, not. It just came as instinct that that hormone milk is a no-no. It’s the same thing with sustainable brands and products, it’s all in the quality and longevity of the product; no added hormones, please.

Plus, it is important to see a product’s full lifecycle from the human capital it took to produce it to the time you donate it. Here are a few brands that can make you a little more greener in your everyday life: Thrive Market is perfect for all your daily grocery store needs. They have everything from a cure for your cold to a new toy for your dog. And if you want something a little more local, try your local farmer’s market or organic section of your local grocery store. If there is a vision, there is a way. For a fashion fix, check out brands like People Tree, Everlane, Zady, and Patagonia, to name a few. These brands are as affordable as that $55 blouse from a big box store, but have a little more care for the lifecycle of your garments.

Another great option is to consider vintage, second-hand, or consignment options, which are other methods sustainable fashion favors and reduce waste.

"I can’t impact the deeply saturated fashion industry."

“Fashion can be a universal player in protecting the planet,” Pharrell Williams told National Geographic. One person is all it takes. One place is all it takes. The horrific building collapse in Rana Plaza sparked such a media frenzy of something that had been building for years. It just took one Jenga piece to demolish the whole infrastructure, or at least bring light to it and begin the process of building a revolution.

The power in this life-size Jenga is with people, the consumers. If the consumers demand it, then changes within the fashion industry will come to exist. Just take a second to think about all those other things that consumers have had the power to change in just the past decade: storefronts are no longer a necessity in a market where web presence is stronger, mobile devices are drivers for foot traffic or else everything else can be done “on the web,” online reviews carry more weight than ever for brands, and products can literally jump off the screen due to the amount of real-life graphics available to an online consumer.

Though it is a slow process, retailers and consumers alike are part of positively evolving the industry. According to Nicole Peyraud in a Yogi Times article, “Showing enthusiasm for…sustainable choices, consumers are putting rumors of an eco-fad to rest, actively making deep-rooted change one environmentally friendly purchase at a time.” It really does lie in the power of the people.

"Eco-friendly fashion doesn’t look cool or isn’t really my style."

Let me guess, when you visualize sustainable fashion you are probably envisioning a granola-eating, vegan hippie who loves yoga. This is totally the opposite of the world of sustainable fashion. The brands that exist are numerous with products for everyone, from your daughter to your grandmother, and for every style, from casual, luxury to even retro.

Brands like Reformation, Zady, People Tree, Everlane, Patagonia, GAIA for women, Krochet Kids, Fair Trade Winds, Mata Traders, MadeFAIR, PACT Apparel, Nisolo, Shift To Nature, milo+nicki, Mayamiko, Alternative Apparel, Apolis, Vetta Capsule, Naja, Industry of All Nations, Slumlove Sweater Company, Elegantees, Noctu, Symbology, Brain Tree Clothing, Fibre Athletics, My Sister, Sseko Designs, Sotela, prAna, Wallis Evera, Purple Impression, The Root Collective, Thread Harvest, Raven + Lily, Eileen Fisher, Gather & See, Oliberete, Good Cloth, and many many many more are making it easy to buy gorgeous, one-of-a-kind pieces for all types of consumers (find more here). You can buy everything from your blouse to your lingerie! It really is a matter of purchase power. Do your part; it’s for our planet and the people who live on it.

NYC Bite of the Month: Organic Bento Boxes At Mimi Cheng’s

Remember When you realized that no restaurant will ever really compare to mom's home cooking? For sisters Hannah and Marian Cheng, that moment inspired them to open one together, and make their own organic Taiwanese dumpling dreams come true.

Two years and many rice wrappers later, the sibling duo is bringing their Mimi Cheng's magic to Nolita with some obsession-amplifying additions to the menu. Their new outpost offers the same organic, locally sourced goodness as OG Mimi Cheng's, but with a bento box option that lets us test-drive a variety of bites - perfect for when we're unsure of what we want, or if what we want is all the things.

Our fave NYC foodie, Kat Odell, stopped by to check it all out and is sharing the delicious details here...

What I Ate: Mimi Cheng’s new bento box.

Why I Ate It: My good friends Marian and Hannah Cheng are the tag team behind Mimi Cheng’s, the Taiwanese dumpling shop that now counts a second location right across from Cha Cha Matcha on Broome in Nolita. I admit, I’ve become addicted to their steamed chicken and zucchini dumplings, in addition to their scallion pancakes, which are delicate and crisp on the outside, yet offer a toothsome chew within. At location two they’ve launched bento boxes, which is great for anyone who wants to try a few different favors without committing to just one dish. I am especially keen on the Taipei Tapas assortment, which involves those killer scallion pancakes, your choice of four dumplings, plus poppy pink radish pickles and a mimi cucumber salad.

Why You Need It: By using organic ingredients and locally sourced proteins from craft butcher shop Fleischers, Mimi’s offers a healthier take on dumplings.

How to Build a Clean, Green Capsule Beauty Routine

Less is more, but only if you know what and where to trim. We've called in eco-lifestyle expert, Ashlee Piper of The Lil Foxes, to clear out our closets and challenge us to live a little greener. Now we're taking her tips to the vanity to build a perfectly balanced, streamlined and stress-free capsule beauty routine...

If you’ve read anything over the past few years, you’ve likely witnessed the surge in popularity of the minimalist capsule wardrobe movement. If you’re not yet familiar, 1) welcome to 2016, and 2) check out the whole closet detox series I launched with The Chalkboard last year.

If you’re already a capsule devotee, you’re likely finding yourself loving the benefits of a pared-down wardrobe so much that you’re itching to extend those principles to other aspects of your life. So, without further ado, let’s move from the closet to the bathroom, shall we? Why? Because capsule beauty is all the rage and trust when I say that applying minimalist principles to your grooming regimen will not only save you loads of time and stress in your everyday, but will also present you with an epic opportunity to easily transition your beauty products to those of a cleaner, greener, kinder ilk.

To make this fun and easy, I’ve created a step-by-step guide to creating a beauty capsule. And I’m also sharing some of my favorite products that make my own routine high-performing while still being minimalist and manageable.

I’ve been in the capsule beauty game for years and not only has it afforded me more time in the morning, it’s also helped to improve my skin. As a reformed product junkie, minimizing the sheer volume of things I slapped on my face and body has helped me to establish a beautiful balance that has extended to my complexion. Here are a few of my favorite “gateway” capsule multi-taskers, all of which are vegan, cruelty-free, and for the most part, pretty darn natural. So be voyeuristic and peek in my makeup bag

Do you rock capsule beauty? Tell us what you love and your favorite tips!

Step 1: Observe your existing routine

Sage folks often say, “start where you are,” so that’s what we’re going to do. Add a few extra minutes to your get-ready routine to see what you actually need (hello, soap) versus what you reach for simply because it’s there. Do you reach for the same moisturizer or lipstick everyday? Consider those staples. Do you have products taking up precious physical (and let’s face it, emotional) space that are collecting dust? Put those in the “don’t really need” category. Anything that falls in that latter category, put it in a box or bin and stash it away.

Step 2: Try the pared-down routine

Many capsule exercises have you set a limit to the number of items you have. I won’t do that to you, but now that the superfluous products are out of the picture (for the moment), get ready as you normally would. Are you noticing anything missing? Any products you wish were in your routine that would make things easier? Are you running low on essential items? Did you retrieve anything from the banished product stash? Take note of these things and move to step 3.

Step 3: Stock up + swap, focusing on quality

A minimalist beauty routine means that you have more time and space. It also means that the products that make the cut need to be damn good and work hard, both in performance and in ethics. This is an ideal time to swap out any products that are tested on animals, contain harmful chemicals or simply don’t perform the way you need them to. Use this as an exciting opportunity to explore the burgeoning and wonderful world of natural and kind cosmetics.

Familiarize yourself with ingredient labels and symbols that denote a sterling product like the Leaping Bunny and PETA Bunny symbols, which indicate cruelty-free production, Certified Vegan symbol, which indicates that the product contains no animal by-products or testing, and the Organic and EcoCert designations which, though varied in their regulation, can lead you to safer, more ecologically-conscious products and companies.

Look at packaging (is it recyclable? Compostable? Reusable?), ingredient load (can you pronounce the ingredients? Are there TONS of them?) and prominence of active ingredients (you know, the ones that actually do what they’re supposed to do). You’ll also want to focus on products that can multitask like soaps that can double as shampoo and shave gel, face oil that can double as a hair conditioning treatment, or lipsticks that can seamlessly provide a creamy flush to cheeks. Oh, and buy only what you need (no duplicates). Becoming a discerning consumer will help you find products you enjoy and can feel great about on all fronts.

Step 4: Abstain from shopping + sheriff your stash

The key to keeping things manageable and minimalist in the bathroom and beyond is to be ruthless about what makes the cut. The siren song of glittering makeup store counters can be difficult to resist, but to truly reap the stress-busting benefits of going capsule, you have to keep your stash simple and uncluttered. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy little luxuries like your favorite perfume or a bold seasonal nail polish. Rather it means you have your priorities and you stick to them. You can still have fun and be inventive with your look and routine without falling prey to a constant influx of new and unnecessary products.

When folks go all-in on a capsule wardrobe, it’s often recommended that they abstain from clothes shopping for an entire season, or about three months. If you get your beauty capsule to a good place, you may find it helpful to bypass the flash sales and gifts with purchase hoopla and spend that time and money doing something more therapeutic, like catching up with a friend or going to yoga. You’ll still look great, you’ll likely have more coin jingling in your pocket and you’ll find you have more time overall.

Make This Herbal Infusion For Better Immunity

We've all got to drink our eight glasses of water a day, so why not spike our h2o with functional herbs that'll strengthen and comfort us too? This recipe for an immune-boosting herbal infusion is perfect for the season and comes to us from holistic nutritionist, Kristin Dahl. Make an infusion like this one in a giant jar and tweak til you find your own personal favorite combination...

The body’s immune system naturally defends against disease-causing microorganisms. However, when we are run down and working too much or too hard, our immunity does not function at optimal levels. Stress is one of the top factors that creates cellular inflammation and lowers our immunity and ability to defend against foreign invaders. When our systems become overburdened, foreign invaders eventually take over and make us sick.

A hardy immune system can be maintained by a balanced diet, proper sleep, plenty of water and regular exercise. Taking preventative steps to boost our immune system keeps inflammation at bay and stops illness from taking hold.

Incorporating herbs into our daily meals is a powerful way to kick our immunity into high gear. All herbs contain an array of healing properties that work to support cleansing while deeply nourishing the body. Herbal infusions are a potent source of vitamins, minerals and plant constituents that help to rebuild our cells while simultaneously boosting immunity. Incorporating a variety of herbs into our daily meals adds a boost of nutrition, while infusions act as a potent and concentrated therapeutic antidote.

Make your own herbal infusion by combining one part each of the herbs below. Play around with potency and add more of the herbs you feel drawn to. Two to three cups of this herbal combination will support immunity and help to alleviate and reduce pre-existing flu symptoms.

HERBS FOR IMMUNITY

ECHINACEA: This is a great all around immunity herb because it targets bacterial, viral and fungal infections. Echinacea stimulates white blood cells and the lymphatic system.

ROSE HIPS: Add rose hips to your infusion for a tangy, citrusy flavor. Rose hips are high in vitamin C.

ORANGE PEEL: Orange peel is high in vitamins A and C, and acts as an anti-inflammatory to increase blood circulation. Orange peel also helps with lung health by acting as a natural antihistamine and expelling congestion from the lungs.

PEPPERMINT: Peppermint is a great tea to drink when you are suffering from a cold or flu because of its high levels of calcium, vitamin B and potassium. These are all great nutrients that will boost the immune system. Also menthol, the mint found within peppermint, is a natural decongestant that will help break down phlegm and restrict bacterial and fungal growth.

CALENDULA FLOWER: Calendula is a popular herb for stimulating the immune system and for preventing infection as it has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Calendula is often used for healing and soothing wounds.

RED CLOVER: Red clover contains resin, a substance helpful to the respiratory system. Resin is often used to treat congestion and coughs due to its antimicrobial properties.

GREEN TEA: Green tea* contains an antioxidant called catechin, which is a tumor-fighting agent that prevents the growth of cancerous tumors. This antioxidant also supports the immune system by protecting it against damaging free radicals and cancer causing carcinogens. *Optional – contains caffeine.

How To Make An Herbal Immunity Infusion

Mix 6 Tbsp of dried herbs into a large Mason jar. Cover completely with boiling water, stir with a wooden spoon and add water until full. Place lid on, and let sit for 4-8 hours for leaves or hardy flowers, and 8 hours for roots. Strain and refrigerate. Infusion are most potent for 48 hours, stored in the refrigerator.

Tip: Make your infusion in the evening and then strain it in the morning, or steep half the amount for a quick 20-minute immunity tea.

Inside The Gorgeous Raven + Lily Shops That Empower Female Artisans

HOW DREAMY ARE these photos of Raven + Lily's Texas shops? We love the idea of shopping in a way that gives back this year. Raven + Lily is one of our favorite brands uplifting female artisans by bringing gorgeous objects and jewelry like the ones pictured above to market, both online and IRL.

We're chatting with co-founder and CEO, Kirsten Dickerson (again!) about what makes the design of their storefronts so unique, and how each detail fits into a larger mission to honor our environment and empower women, globally...

SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS CURATION: 80% of the items sold in the stores are exclusive R+L designs, but I also curate other goods from other like-minded socially conscious companies like St. Roche (read our interview), Rose + Fitzgerald, Kopal, Sseko (visit with us) and Gaia.

WORLDLY INSPIRATION: All the elements in both stores reflect my love of Morocco, minimalism, and mid century design.  The architect is Michael Hsu. The lighting is all artisan made in India and Egypt. The large vintage rugs are sourced from my friend Maryam Montague in Morocco and they support her non profit Project Soar. We also source one of a kind baskets (available in storefronts only) from the local Taita tribal women, and the little animals made from the remnants of our apparel designs are also from the community and support families with differently-abled members.

RECYCLED GOODNESS: The wood is all reclaimed wood from either a blacksmith shop in the Civil War era or a 100 year old department store that was torn down in San Antonio.

STENCIL STYLE: The stencils used on the concrete floors are our exclusive design partnership with the Royal Design Stencil Studio. They donate 20% of all sales to fund skills training for HIV+ women in Ethiopia, and over 60 women have gone through the program and gained access to starting their own businesses.  We also sell the stencils in the storefronts.

Fair Trade Focus: We are working with the first fair trade factory in Africa on a carbon neutral zone.  The focus of this partnerships is to provide meaningful employment to the local community which has previously suffered and depended on poaching for survival.  Their efforts have helped to end poaching in this entire region as well as restore the surrounding land. Animals have returned and the people are thriving. We love that this partnership so tangibly shows how shopping ethically can have a very positive impact on people and the planet!

Community Connection: We also love hosting community events in both stores, including fundraisers for local non profits as well as launch parties for magazines and other media events.

Which shops that give back do you love? Share in the comments below!

3 Keys To Stocking A More Sustainable Pantry

The confusion around food labels can feel endless, especially with non-perishables. With so many options available and new ones popping up all the time, where do we even begin to narrow it all down, never mind find new ones to love?

We're breaking down a few core concepts of a healthy pantry (and label terms to look out for) with the founders of farm-to-doorstep delivery service, Out of the Box Pantry, who is helping us stock up on brands and products we can trust...

From non-GMO to gluten-free to fat-free and “all natural,” figuring out which labels we want to eat is complicated. And it’s not just about the label, but the practices behind the label and the intentions of the makers and growers. Which brands are genuine and which just look genuine? Aisles at the best supermarkets may seem full of great choices, but they can also leave you with lots of unanswered questions and a sense of bewilderment.

We source products from trusted vendors we have known and worked with for years whose standards we share and whose efforts allow us to deliver the very best. Our pantry box deliveries are made with many different food standards in mind and we have selected three that we stand behind because they are friendly to the planet, nutrient dense and delicious: biodynamic, heirloom and wildcrafted.

About The pantry Box: Out of the Box Pantry offers a convenient way to stock your pantry with the best quality staples. Not only are you protecting the environment by supporting these practices, but they are also some of the tastiest products you can find.

Boxes are a hand-picked variety of five full-size organic, wildcrafted, biodynamic and heirloom pantry items - from cooking oils to jams, grains, nuts, condiments and more - delivered straight from the farm to your pantry. Accompanied by monthly recipes that are included in each pantry box, you will have everything you need to squirrel away a well-stocked pantry of amazing items that will make your kitchen (and every meal) complete - and at the same time protect and nurture our biodiversity, small-scale growers and makers, and sustainable practices.

Order by December 8th to guarantee delivery before the holidays!

Cranberry Avocado Toast + Other Genius Leftover Ideas

Thanksgiving Dinner is a gift that keeps on giving, and giving and giving... leftovers are great, but  - let's be real - having the same plate of sides for a week can get a bit redundant. Certified holistic nutritionist and cooking instructor, Pamela Salzman, is showing us a few creative ways to use up leftovers with genius recipe remixes. Tap into the full culinary potential of Thanksgiving below!

One of the benefits of all that hard work prepping for an epic meal like Thanksgiving is the leftovers the next day.  There are really infinite ways to transform last night's stuffing and mashed potatoes. Although if you're already over it, you can certainly freeze almost anything, from turkey to cranberry sauce.

Cranberry sauce is, however, one of the easiest items to put to use, whether it is a topping for a warm porridge, French toast, in a smoothie, as a base for a salsa, and more. Cranberry sauce-avocado toast and overnight oats with cranberry sauce are two of my go-tos which require almost no effort - key the day after Thanksgiving when I can manage no more than ordering holiday gifts online.  Here are some other ideas for transforming your Thanksgiving leftovers...

Cranberry Avocado Toast: Top a slice of toasted bread with smashed avocado, cranberry sauce and Maldon sea salt.

Cranberry Overnight Oats:  Combine 2 tablespoons of chia seeds, 1 cup rolled oats (look for certified gluten-free oats to make this a gluten-free recipe) and 2 cups almond milk (preferably homemade). Soak overnight in the refrigerator.  Swirl in leftover cranberry sauce before serving.

Stuffing Egg Bake: Combine 1 cup stuffing with 3 beaten eggs. Bake in 2 greased 4-inch ramekins at 375 for 45-50 minutes or until set and golden brown.

Curried Turkey Lettuce Cups: Anything you can do with cooked chicken, you can do with turkey. For this recipe, improvise a marinade with Greek yogurt, Vegenaise, curry powder, apricot preserves, white wine vinegar, salt and pepper. Toss with chopped celery and shredded turkey, and serve in butter lettuce leaves.

Pumpkin Pie Bread Pudding: Just sub half the bread in this recipe with an equal measurement of cubed pumpkin pie — this is to die for!

Pumpkin Pie Smoothie: Just scrape the pumpkin pie filling into a blender — freeze it if you have time — add almond milk to get the desired consistency, add a drop of vanilla and a pinch of cinnamon to taste.

MASHED POTATO CROQUETTES: Take some grated cheddar cheese and mix it into mashed potatoes. Form the mixture into small patties, dip into egg, then Panko breadcrumbs. Sauté  in olive oil until golden brown and crispy.

Thanksgiving Shepherd's Pie:
To an 8 x 8 casserole dish, add 2 cups leftover veggies, 2 cups of cubed turkey (or 2 cups more veggies), and 1 cup gravy mixed with 1 cup of stock. Top with mashed potatoes and grated cheese or a little melted butter, and bake at 350 until bubbly.

Turkey Quesadillas: On one side of a large whole wheat tortilla, create a layer of chopped turkey, shredded cheese and baby spinach. Heat, fold in half an continue cooking until the cheese is melted and the outside is golden brown. Insert a few slices of avocado and serve with a side of cranberry sauce (which can also be turned into a salsa with some lime, cilantro, green onion and ground cumin)

Stuffing Stuffed Mushrooms: Brush olive oil on mushrooms with the stem removed. Put a spoonful of stuffing in cavity and bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Serve with cranberry sauce.

Gut Feelings: Why Juicing Is Good For Your Microbiome

The microbiome is a mysterious place that's become an increasingly important focal point in the wellness world. Dr. Joe Alcock of Pressed Juicery’s Medical Board is mapping out a few key facts about our microbiome, including how juicing can help our whole system shine. Strap on your science hats, kids - this one has a lot to take in, but is 100% worth the read...

Not too long ago, we thought we understood nutrition. Food is made of carbohydrates, protein and fat along with micronutrients such as iron and vitamins. Malnutrition is solved by meeting recommended dietary allowances in each of these categories. Obesity can be avoided by calculating energy requirements, paying attention to serving sizes and exerting self-control. Simple and scientific, right?

Now we know it is not so simple. We had overlooked a hugely important factor in nutrition and metabolism: the microbiota.

The Mystery of our Microbiome

The microbiota consists of at least 30 trillion microbes, mostly bacteria, that inhabit our bodies. These weigh about two kilograms (four and a half pounds) and can be found mostly in the colon. In the last ten years, research on the gut microbiota is generating new findings at a breathtaking pace. This knowledge has upended the conventional wisdom on diet, nutrition and obesity.

How is the microbiota important in nutrition? A compelling early piece of evidence came from experiments with germ-free mice. Mice in this study were genetically predisposed to be obese, but when they were raised “germ-free” – in a sterile environment without microbes - they stayed lean. When these germ-free mice made contact with microbes, they rapidly gained weight and became obese. This meant that when it comes to fatness, diet alone was not enough. Microbes in combination with diet were necessary to cause overweight and obesity.

Some scientists thought that gut microbes cause weight gain because they help us extract extra calories from our diet. We cannot digest fiber, aka complex carbohydrates, without the help of microbes. Extra energy from fermentation of complex carbohydrates is absent when there are no microbes to ferment them. But the story of obesity does not end there. Gut microbes also cause chronic inflammation. Inflammation happens when the gut microbiota undergoes unhealthy changes (dysbiosis), often caused by diet, and when gut microbes aren’t restricted to the inside of the gut.

Inflammation can happen after a single meal, caused by a bacterial cell-wall building block known as endotoxin. Endotoxin from bacteria spike the blood within an hour of eating cream and glucose. The appearance of these bacterial products activate immune cells and cause inflammation. Chronic inflammation is involved in many diseases, but especially obesity and diabetes, which are becoming epidemic in many countries. If gut microbes are the cause, they might provide a key to preventing the obesity epidemic.

Gut Microbiota + Juicing

One possible dietary solution involves the gut microbiota. This is possible because nutrients have different, often opposite effects on gut microbes and inflammation. In the previous study, orange juice prevented endotoxin from entering the blood and blocked inflammation. This was an early clue that not all calories are equal. Despite having a lot of calories, orange juice has been shown to block fat accumulation in mice, and is associated with healthy body composition in humans. The microbiota is the missing piece of the puzzle that underlies these findings. Plant compounds in orange juice known as flavanones inhibit the growth of harmful microbes. These ingredients shape the microbiome and strengthen the intestinal barrier. As a result, some plant ingredients protect us against inflammation from endotoxin and have healthy effects on our metabolism.

Recent research has examined how fruit and vegetable juices affect the microbiota, inflammation and obesity. Flavanones in some fruit juices were proposed to have beneficial effects on the gut microbiota. Researchers from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA tested the effect of a fruit-juice diet on the microbiota in 20 volunteers. This diet caused a reduced number of Proteobacteria, a group that contains many pathogens, such as E. coli. The juice diet also changed the ratio of the most common bacteria in the gut, Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. Previous research showed weight loss with similar changes in those microbes, and subjects in the UCLA study also lost weight. The effect of a three-day juice diet on body weight might be attributed to beneficial effects on the gut microbiota. It is unknown if those changes have lasting effects on body weight, but future work will examine that question.

Nutritionists advise that our diets are too low in fiber and vegetables, and too high in refined sugar and unhealthy fats. Microbiome experts propose that these diets are unhealthy mostly because of their effects on gut microbes and gut-barrier function. Fiber, healthy fats, along with fruits and flavanone-rich juices, promise to reduce the harm of the Western diet. We can thank our gut microbiotas for these dietary effects. Long-term studies will be needed to pinpoint what foods are healthiest for us and our microbiotas. In the meanwhile, it makes sense to pick foods that shape a healthy microbiota, and pay attention to emerging evidence on microbiota that gets more interesting every day.

Things to remember:

+ Nutrition is more than food labels. What we eat affects gut microbes and the gut barrier.
+ The microbiota has powerful effects on inflammation, weight gain and obesity.
+ Juices that shape the microbiome and strengthen the gut barrier may protect us from weight gain.
+ Three-day juice diets changed the gut microbiota and resulted in weight loss.
+ The gut microbiota is the key to understanding the link between diet and health.

Our Food Baby Avoidance Strategy This Thanksgiving

The holidays are about enjoyment, but sometimes we enjoy a little too much (and by sometimes, we mean every freaking year) which can lead to less than a vibrant sense of well-being. This year, we're taking tips from functional medicine doctor Mark Hyman about overeating, and how to successfully avoid it without being overly restrictive. From pre-hydrating to eating mindfully (and how) we'll be holding onto these pro tips straight through the season...

With all the parties and family gatherings, it’s inevitable that temptations will arise this time of year. The holidays won’t bring diet disaster if you are equipped with the right tools and have a plan in place. The power is in your hands. Your best bet to overcome them is to prepare yourself for these bumps in the road. Here are 10 tips to help you avoid the holiday pitfalls:

Don’t skip meals: Begin your day as any other day on the plan; do not skip meals to save calories or carbohydrates.

Pre-snack: Eat a protein-packed snack an hour before your holiday meal.

Pre-plan: Don’t think of the holidays as an excuse to gorge on unhealthy food. Plan in advance to make sure there are options available that you can enjoy.

Make smart choices: Scan the spread before putting anything on your plate. Choose wisely!

Set intentions: Set an intention for how you would like to feel after the meal and hold yourself accountable by sharing with a close friend or family member. Or write it in your journal.

Start healthy: Start the meal with a soup, fresh vegetables, or a salad, and avoid any refined flour pastries or sweet appetizers to prevent the cycle of craving.

Pre-Hydrate: Drink two glasses of water with lemon before the meal.

Plan Apres-meal activity: Plan an activity to look forward to after the meal —a group walk, visiting with other friends or family, a group game, or playing with younger family members. Or try offering to clean up and help your host!

Eat Mindfully: Try these tips to eat your meal mindfully:

+ Take five deep breaths before your meal.
+ Sit next to someone you genuinely find interesting and engage in pleasant conversation.
+ Appreciate the colors and smells of your food.
+ Chew thoroughly and slowly.
+ Put your fork down between bites.
+ Breathe in through your nose while you eat.
+ Express gratitude with others before the meal.
+ Have a trusted friend or family help hold you accountable for your goals.
+ Halfway through the meal, put fork down and pause. Take three deep breaths and assess your hunger on a scale of 1-10. Ask yourself how much more you need to eat in order to walk away feeling energized and comfortable. Hint: Usually, this is around “6” or “7.”
+ Close your meal by saying something out loud about how delicious it was and how satisfied you are. Hearing yourself say this can help signal to you and others that you are finished.

Stay Healthy: Most importantly, take time to enjoy healthy, wholesome meals with your friends and family and remember that you can heal your body and mind with each forkful of delicious food you enjoy.

A Genius Dinner Party Tip To Put You At Ease

We adored this piece of entertaining advice from Helen Johannesen of Helen's Wines during our recent wine class. For those of us who are easily overwhelmed with the idea of a house full of guests or even for the seasoned pro who wants to relax their dinner party protocol this holiday season, we love Helen's idea below:

"If entertaining overwhelms you, a very easy thing to do when you have people over is to put out a big ice bucket with a few bottles of white and rosé. Let guests serve themselves after you offer them the initial glass. Also, when you sit down for dinner, grab bottles and throw them on the table - don't hold back! Abundance helps put people at ease."

We couldn't agree more and have a few suggestions on beautiful ways to make this dinner party idea work in real life...

How To Get Rebel Wilson’s Old Hollywood Look

Hollywood flocks to celeb makeup artist Katey Denno for her expertise in red carpet gorgeousness, but what we love about this makeup maven is her clean beauty prowess. This look on hilarious actress Rebel Wilson is case in point. Try the full look for holiday party season using products that won't irritate your skin - or harm the environment. This totally sexy, slightly throwback look can be mastered with tips from the green mastermind makeup artist herself...

Rebel Wilson's peaches-and-cream complexion, stunning smile and gorgeous eyes make doing her makeup so much fun. Because she would be the center of attention for most of the night - taking the stage to receive an award and give a speech - I knew that I wanted to keep her makeup simple so she wouldn't have to worry about touch-ups, yet I wanted to make it glamorous, with a touch of old Hollywood to complement her fantastic ruby-red sequined dress.

Skin Prep: Because this was the first time I'd worked with her and I didn't know her skin type yet, I prepped her flawless skin with hydration from the Evercalm Global Protection Day Cream from REN's sensitive skin line. (I've learned that as a makeup artist, you can never be too careful with what you put on skin!). I then used Kjaer Weis' foundation brush to sweep on Kjaer Weis foundation (I knew I wanted a more matte finish to her skin so she could go powder-free), and pressed and blended it in using a dampened (and then wrung out in a towel) beauty blender.

Eye lights: Keeping her eye makeup simple with a bit of a late 1940s vibe was key for me, so I pressed shadow from RMS Beauty - ‘Sunset Beach-43,’ which is a crushed pearl highlight - all around her eyes along both lash lines, and into the inner corners. I then used a slightly more taupe/cocoa shade along the crease of her lid, also from RMS Beauty - 'Tempting Touch 71.'

Liner + Lashes: Along her lash line I pressed jet-black liner from W3LL People, and then went over it with liquid black liner from Zuzu. I curled her lashes and applied multiple coats of mascara from Honest Beauty, along with a row of strip lashes from Girl Get Glamorous.

Brow game: Her brows were filled in using Eco Brow, in a mixture of Liz and Penelope, and I always keep cotton swabs on hand to blend, blend, blend the edges for a natural look.

full flush: I love a hint of a pink flush on cheeks, so I dusted 'Apple Blossom, a light, petal pink loose-powder blush from Alima Pure onto the apples of her cheeks.

peekaboo Lip: I finished the look with a few good swipes of lipstick from Ilia Beauty, in a pale peachy pink nude, called 'These days,’ which I then topped with a hint of Ilia's 'Peekaboo' gloss to draw even more attention to her gorgeous pout.

How To Make A Crystal Gratitude Grid Or Centerpiece

Want to lower the risk of family quabbles and up your centerpiece game at the same time? We love this unique and specific look at making a gratitude-inducing crystal grid from Heather Askinose of Energy Muse to add a meaningful burst of energy to any table you set this season...

Thanksgiving is the time of year that we are reminded to be in a state of gratitude. It’s a time to show gratitude to the people in our life, count our blessings and reflect back on how we have been supported throughout the year. But what happens when a dark cloud crosses over your mind and you feel overwhelmed by the demands of the holiday season? On one hand, you’re excited to spend time with friends and family, but in the back of your mind, you see memories of peaceful conversations around the holiday table taking a tension-filled turn. Will old strained relationships or last year’s arguments resurface? If you’re hosting Thanksgiving this year, are you having nightmares of everything not being picture perfect, as you envisioned?

Guess what? This year, I have a secret for you: harness the calming Earth energy of crystals, making them part of your Thanksgiving centerpiece to keep the good vibes and gratitude flowing. Crystals love to be the center of attention, right where all the action is. They are able to connect with every person at the table, encouraging everyone to raise their spirits and vibrate higher. You know a crystal is happy when you look at it and it’s sparkling. When they’re put in a place of prominence at the center of the table, it’s as if the crystals are bringing their “best vibes yet,” benefiting the entire table of guests.

Place a crystal grid in the center of your Thanksgiving table this year to emit harmony, peace and tranquility in your home and to everyone sitting around your table.

Time is precious — it’s our most valuable commodity. This Thanksgiving, take the time to love, embrace and cherish everyone in your life, even the people who have been difficult this year. Why would you do that? You do it because those are the people who gave you an opportunity to grow. The more grateful we are for everything in our lives, the more we all have to celebrate. The earth is here to support you. Work with her this season and feel her nurturing energy around your Thanksgiving table. Blessings...

Mantras of the Thanksgiving season:

I am grateful. I have an attitude of gratitude.
I reconnect to the energy of Mother Earth and reconnect to myself.
I am loveable.
I am calm.
I am empowered to create the life of my dreams.

The day before Thanksgiving

Cleanse your crystals: Place all your crystals out in the sun for at least four hours to cleanse them. If you’re unable to place them in the sun, you may also immerse them in the smoke of burning sage, palo santo wood, frankincense or copal.

Program your crystals: Crystals attract, magnify and direct energy, but the secret is, you need to direct your crystal! When you program a crystal with your intention, that’s where the magic happens. You’re giving your crystal a purpose and the possibilities are endless from there.

Hold your crystals in your hands (or place them all in one area if there are too many to hold), close your eyes and take three deep breaths. Ask that the highest vibration of love and light clear all unwanted energy or any previous programming. Repeat out loud three times: “I program this crystal to hold the intention of gratitude, harmony and peace. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

The crystals will hold the energy and space for your intention. If at some point during the day, you need a breather, just take a look at your crystals on the table and they will give you a gentle reminder of your intentions for your Thanksgiving this year.

How To create your Thanksgiving Gratitude crystal grid

Sage the room: Cleanse the room where your Thanksgiving table will reside by burning sage. This rids your space of any negative, unwanted or lingering energies so that your space is clear and clean for all your loved ones.

Place a slab of petrified wood in the center of the table: This will work as your base and foundation of the grid. Petrified wood helps to transforms situations. It emits a stable, safe and secure energy, evoking a calming, grounded ambiance.

Add shungite: On top of the petrified wood slab, place four shungite stones in the outermost corners. Shungite has been touted as the miracle molecule of the 21st century and is excellent to work with when you want to neutralize an environment.

Add jasper: Place two red and two yellow pieces of jasper in the four directions, alternating the colors. This is symbolic of receiving support from the four directions (north, south, east and west) and knowing spirit has your back.

Complete your grid:  Place a programmed quartz crystal in the center of the grid, which holds your intention for the entire grid such as love, gratitude, harmonious communication and blessings.

Add selenite under the table: Place a selenite crystal under the center of the table, on the ground, to fill the room with white light and dissolve any tension or blocked energy.

Ground the room: Place four shungite cubes in the four corners of the room with your table and grid to ground the room and create an energetic vortex of stability.

TCM Editor’s Pick: Genius Reusable Beeswax Food Wraps

Here's what we love about detoxing our kitchens and cooking with clean foods: everything on our counters is becoming more and more beautiful. Less plastic means more wood and glass. Less processed foods means fewer obnoxious boxes and bags and more bowls of fruit and fresh growing herbs.

Along those lines, we swooned over these cotton and beeswax food wraps at first glance. They're kind of gorgeous compared to zippy plastic bags and they are far more functional (and realistically reusable!) than we first thought too. Check them out:

What it is: Let's start with what it's not: wasteful, toxic or made with mysterious and health-harming metal or plastic material. Abeego's reusable, organic and surprisingly chic (as far as food storage solutions go) wraps come in several different sizes and simply need to be rinsed to be reused - so it's convenient as well. According to their website, you'll buy new wraps before needing to throw old ones away - they're built to last.

Why We're Obsessed: The ingredients! These wraps are made from organic cotton and hemp, and treated with jojoba oil, beeswax and tree resin. They smell amazing and the clean coating ensures that food stays fresh in the fridge and uncontaminated in it's wrap. The natural antibacterial nature of beeswax adds another layer of chemical-free safety. Genius!

What To Do With It: Use a wrap to store the second half of your avocado for later, to seal a prepped buddha bowl for a healthy office lunch, or around fresh herbs and greens to keep them crisp and delicious. Warm the wax with the heat of your hands and mold it to you liking for literally anything; when it cools it will create a seal and hold it's shape around the food item or plate. The wraps are also ideal for holiday kitchen mayhem: we love them for storing pre-chopped veggies or to wrap up a cheese wheel- we think the wraps are pretty enough to serve!

ABC’s The Chew Co-Hosts on How To Throw An Epic Thanksgiving

We're thrilled to share these Thanksgiving day tips with you from our Guest Editor's Emmy Award-winning co-hosts at The Chew. With two Iron Chefs, a couple of cookbook authors and a lot of TV host personality among them, we dream of having this team in our kitchens later this week. The next best thing? This list of the foodies' top tips, favorite culinary memories and what they'll be cooking this year. (Mario is making an Umbria-themed spread with truffle gravy, people - NBD!)

Clinton Kelly is squashing the stress of pulling the day together, Daphne is sharing her ultimate hosting advice and Chef Michael Symon is getting nostalgic with us about magical aromas and the best leftovers...

The best dish you personally make for Thanksgiving...

Mario Batali: I make everything. Here is this year’s menu, themed from Umbria: turkey porchetta; chestnut, fennel sausage and dried quince stuffing; vin santo/black truffle gravy; Macoun apple sauce with roasted quince; Swiss chard neci al forno; shaved Brussels sprouts with Chianti vinegar and pecorino; sweet potato mash with sweet garlic; roasted cipolline with sage; frisee with bacon and poached pears; cranberry trebbiano compote; and for dessert, castagnaccio with sour cream.

Daphne Oz: I make all our pies. Pumpkin pie with a sugar-cookie crust is my specialty. There’s never any left.

Clinton Kelly: Roasted beets topped with crème fraiche, grated fresh horseradish and lemon zest.

Michael Symon: My turketta. I originally made it in a Thanksgiving battle in Iron Chef almost ten years ago, but it has graced our table every years since. Let's face it, when you pack a paste of guanciale, capers, garlic and chili flakes into a turkey, it is guaranteed to be tasty!

Carla Hall: The double sweet potato pie - it has a layer of the traditional sweet potato filling on the bottom and a layer of white chocolate sweet potato mousse on top.

Your Top prep tip for Thanksgiving...

Mario: I build a schedule starting Monday with daily prep lists of things I can do way in advance. I brine the bird Monday, bone it Tuesday and make the stock for the gravy slowly Tuesday night. On Wednesday, I prep all of the vegetables make the stuffing and roll the turkey, prep the dry mix for the cake, make the apple sauce and cranberry compote and set my schedule for Thursday so that I can truly enjoy the day, just by following the schedule.

Daphne: I chop all my veggies the day before. (Or buy them pre-chopped! No shame.) Only make dishes you’ve made many times before – you want to avoid surprises as much as possible when you’re entertaining and juggling many moving parts. Set up your drinks table in advance so any early birds can help themselves and buy you a little time. Once your guests arrive, either invite them into the kitchen with you (only if you can stay relaxed with them in there!) or go be a guest at your own party. Everyone is taking their cues from you, so most importantly: Have fun!!

Clinton: When your guests ask if they can bring something, say yes! People enjoy contributing to a party, but don’t let them bring whatever they feel like bringing. Assign them projects like fresh bread, desserts, cranberry sauce so you can check them off your list. My goal this year is to cook the turkey, stuffing and gravy – and let everyone else do the rest.

Michael: Plan ahead and stick to the schedule! Don't be afraid to start prep a couple days before the big day. On the day of Thanksgiving make a very detailed oven schedule so everything is going in and coming out on time. Remember the turkey needs to rest and will stay plenty hot for up to a hour after removed from the oven!

Carla: For timing purposes and getting the food to the table at one time, plan and balance your menu with hot, cold and room-temperature items. See what you can fit on the stove top at one time and what can fit in the oven at one time. Don't forget about other external cooking sources like the crock pot.

Best thing you ever ate at Thanksgiving?

Mario: My fave thing has always been the stuffing; in our family it has always had lots of onions celery, fennel, sausage, toasted bread, sage and black pepper and it is consistently excellent through many iterations. I change the theme of our Thanksgiving meal every year. In recent years, my table has been New Orleans, Alsace, Lorraine, Santa Fe and Barcelona.

Daphne: I’m a fanatic for sides, and I love my mother’s stuffing. Full of shallots, celery, sage, thyme and a thorough soaking of broth, butter and olive oil, it is a miracle any actually makes it to the plate with everyone in our family descending on the dish as soon as it comes out of the oven. Her corn pudding is also monumental. It’s basically corn niblets, creamed corn, sour cream, corn muffin mix, and all the butter in the world baked as a casserole. Make triple. Clearly, sweatpants with plenty of stretch are a Thanksgiving necessity at our house.

Michael: My pap’s turkey and dumpling soup... it is not only fantastic but stirs up all the memories of my childhood and the magic aromas that fill a house on Thanksgiving.

Carla: I have to go with the cornbread stuffing. It gets me every time.

Clinton: A huge pile of my grandmother’s stuffing (a fairly simple recipe of white bread, celery, egg, salt and pepper) slathered with her homemade giblet gravy made from the pan drippings

Notes From Inside This Week’s Clean Beauty Panel At Soho House

Earlier this week we joined TCM readers and other natural beauty fanatics for a panel discussion on clean beauty at one of our favorite spots in the city, Soho House West Hollywood. As part of an ongoing series of discussions between industry leaders, makers and consumers named EcoSessions our editor in chief, Suzanne Hall, moderated a panel of three passionate industry pros we love.

Our panel included the green makeup artist, Katey Denno (see our recent video series with Katey), the founder of Vapour Organic Beauty, Kristine Keheley, and the founder of ILIA Beauty, Sasha Plavsic. Vapour and ILIA are both on our short list of top green beauty brands and we loved hearing more from these leaders in the industry.  During the evening these pros addressed topics from non-negotiable ingredients to avoid (nix the synthetic fragrance!), favorite products that could convert skeptics (see what 24 natural pros have to say) and what changes they've been most excited to witness on the clean beauty scene - from eco-packaging to the firestorm of interest in the whole industry of late!

As every body is different, one of the most important takeaways was how crucial it is for consumers to take charge of their own safety and knowledge - not just rely on branding. Below,  as promised to panel attendees, we're sharing our short list of the most trusted resources to guide your green shopping.

Have a burning beauty question? Email us or leave your comment below and we're happy to address! See all our natural beauty coverage here.

EWG's Skin Deep DataBase | Check out individual ingredients as you read labels and even look up specific products and get their ratings in this massie database. You can even download an app to scan barcodes and systemize cleaner shopping on the fly. LEARN MORE

The Never List | Never say never, unless it's to these toxic chemicals found in many cosmetics. This list from the founder of always-reliable Beautycounter clears up confusion about those mysterious ingredients we can't pronounce by explaining what they do so we actually know why to avoid them. Grape Kombucha Cocktail With Ginger (And Vodka)

Real unprocessed kombucha contains a hint of alcohol in it... so why not take things a step further and create a healthy cocktail with the fizzy stuff? We think this cocktail recipe will be a hit at many the girl gathering this holiday since so many ladies we love are as hooked on the 'buch as we are (Can you blame us? Check out these health benefits).

Ariane Resnick's The Thinking Girl’s Guide To Drinking is a cute guide to healthier imbibing (get our list of better ingredients) and we love her clean tips for mixing better drinks.

If you're living an alcohol free life, we support you! But hang around The Chalkboard long and you'll find we offer wellness tips that work for a wide variety of lifestyles. If you love to host parties and mix up drinks, don't miss Ariane's new book and our favorite recipe from within its pages below...

Having grown up in rural Massachusetts, I spent years going to summer camp next to the Welch’s factory. I’ve since learned that Concord grape flavor is nostalgic even to those who never saw the purple palace in person. (Okay, fine, that’s a lie. The building was a normal color, I just couldn’t resist the alliteration opportunity.)

When choosing a vodka for this drink, if you’re sticking with gluten-free selections I recommend a grape vodka over a potato one, for the obvious reason. The taste won’t be drastically different, but I love themes. Ginger liqueur is included to offset the risk of this tasting too much like a bad college party. As ginger aids digestion, it’s a natural match with kombucha in terms of the health value, and the flavors meld well together.

Our obsession with overnight oats is well-founded and only one woman beats us out: the queen of gluten-free granola herself, Elizabeth of Purely Elizabeth.

We know there's nothing truly ground-breaking about overnight oats when you break it down, but it's actually life-changing for the healthy girl-on-the-go and we're obsessed. The queen of gluten-free goodies is telling us how she makes overnight oats at home herself and we're geeking out and making all the flavors below this week. So far the pomegranate mix is our fave!

Join in and try all three recipes and tell us your favorite combos in the comments below (we love it blended with almond butter and chia jam!)

All of this cozy, gluten-free hubbub is our way of celebrating Pressed Juicery's seasonal release of our favorite product of the year: spiced almond milk with cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom. Drink it straight, spike your coffee with it or whip it into your overnight oats like Elizabeth below...

3 Infused Water Ideas To Keep Holiday Guests Hydrated

Picture this: it's a Saturday night in December, your holiday party is in full swing, eating this and drinking these...and everyone is completely dehydrated. We love getting ahead of little 'wellness moments' like these - and providing a cool-looking infused water station right along side your bar is the way to do it. More about that later this month, but for now, check out these gorgeous infused water recipes from our girl, Lauren Gores Ireland, who always knows how to entertain in style...

‘Tis the season of parties! This time of year always makes me feel incredibly grateful, because it pulls in the ones we love. The holidays remind us to celebrate togetherness, which is what I love most about this season.

Next time you’re pulling family and friends together, consider an infused water station with festive flavors. Flavored sips are a mindful alternative to cocktails, and they’re always a favorite at my house. Fill large mason jars and other dispensers with colorful fruits and herbs that will both taste delicious and look beautiful on your countertop.

I shared some of my favorite flavor combinations below. The best part is infused water is incredibly good for our bodies! Everything from our skin, to digestion, to our mental clarity receives a boost! Infused water can help flush out toxins, ease our appetite, and improve our mood.

Note: Infuse your water about 30-minutes before guests arrive. This will provide enough time to boost flavors, while still keeping fruits fresh and ripe!

APPLE + CINNAMON | Thinly slice a few apples and place them in a large water jug with about 10 cinnamon sticks (adjust amounts by how strong you want your flavors to be). Cinnamon makes everything taste like fall! Plus, this spice is full of antioxidants. This anti-inflammatory ingredient is also said to boost your immune system.

GRAPEFRUIT + MINT | Slice one grapefruit and combine it with several sprigs of mint for a refreshing flavor. Grapefruit works wonders for our bodies — boosting metabolism, strengthening our immune system and even reducing stress. Mint is also a great appetite cleanser, while helping ease nausea and digestion.

BERRY + SAGE | Get creative with this one, and include any combination of berries. If you want a colorful water station, try adding a cup of raspberries and a cup of strawberries with several sprigs of sage. Berries are packed with antioxidants, aiding in both illness and stress. Plus, it provides just enough sweetness to feel like a treat. Sage will add a beautiful color contrast, and is also known to help with inflammation!

Health At All Costs: 5 Solutions For Better Indoor Air Quality

We all do it, we all need it: Like drinking water and getting sleep, breathing is one of the easiest (and most important) ways to improve health. So easy, in fact, that sometimes we forget that not all air quality is equally pure or beneficial - or that there's something we can do about it.

From the most common air quality contaminants to our favorite resources for clearing them out, read on for a rundown of how to improve the air quality of your home or office, and make the most of that sweet, sweet O2. Breathe a little easier with this essential information...

7 Home Air Quality Concerns

Toxic Dust. PBDEs (also known as toxic dust) are a known nervous system toxin and currently used in plastics and fabric, most notably, in electronic devices. They can accumulate in the body and may damage the live, kidneys and affect the brain and behavior, according to the EPA who, in December, officially named PBDEs “chemicals of concern.”

Mold + bacteria. Found indoors and outside, mold can have a big impact on indoor air quality.

PolleN. Plants and flowers can release microscopic pollen into the air that can then be trapped inside our homes.

Household odorS. Gas stoves and cooking food process itself can also emit fumes and VOCs into the air.

Pet dandeR. Cats, dogs, and other household pets can shed microscopic material around the home.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Some household air fresheners and cleaning products can contain VOCs, which can be released into the air. According to a study carried out by the US Environmental Protection Agency, toxic fumes released from cleaning solvents and deodorants are some of the most common indoor air pollutants.

Formaldehyde. Foam that can be found in textile-covered furniture can release formaldehyde gas. Additionally, some carpets, rugs and their backing materials can emit VOCs when new, and potentially throughout their life.
