10 Everyday Spices You Should Be Using Daily

We put a ton of intention into the way we cook lately. We hunt and gather seasonal veggies from the farmer's market, naturally raised meats from a "real" butcher and only pop open a bottle of wine once we're sure it's organic. But what might trump the health quotient of all of this is that tiny after thought of everyday spices or herbs sprinkled into the butter before roasting everything up!

Herbs and spices for flavor, yes - but herbs and spices for vital health? That's something we're just beginning to catch onto. The key is in finding easy ways to work them into what you're eating as often as possible.

To start, build out your spice rack. Choose three spices you're drawn to and check out our tips below to weave them into the kinds of things we're eating all the time. We're using what McCormick calls the Everyday 10, a list of spices that are familiar, easy to cook with and healthy too...

mccormick spices' everyday 10

Ground Turmeric | We love that turmeric is having a moment. Scientific evidence has been building around the potential health benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties, of curcumin, a compound in the golden spice and we're more than happy to infuse it into more grain and veggies dishes for the distinctive flavor. Remember, a little goes a long way!

Ground Ginger | We love the distinct yet adaptable flavor of ginger, but the fresh root version is often overpowering. Dried ginger allows us to add a dash to just about anything. Try adding this herbal powerhouse to vanilla, mango, chai or berry smoothies for a complex flavor that'll have you hooked. We also love a little ginger in an afternoon cup of tea for an extra kick.

Ground Cinnamon | There's a reason coffee shops everywhere keep that shaker of cinnamon out on their bars - don't ignore it! That innocent pinch of cinnamon in your almond latte can add so much warming flavor and a spicy boost to balance out sweetness and sugar.

Ground Cumin + Smoked Paprika | Hummus makes a quick, high-fiber snack and a dash of earthy cumin or smoked paprika will improve your home batch like nothing else. We also love a light sprinkle of either McCormick spice on sliced cucumbers (take them to the office for easy afternoon hydration and to curb crunchy cravings).

Thyme Leaves + Oregano Leaves | Naturally, these herbs make an ideal match for a good and cozy red sauce, but for nights when Italian's not on the menu, consider throwing a healthy dash of both into a simple vinaigrette. We love the versatile combination of raw oil, good vinegar, spicy mustard and herbs. Learn to make a dressing that perfectly suits your palette and you'll find you're eating more salads in no time.

McCormick Crushed Red Pepper | Facing a dinner recipe you've made three nights in a row? Or a healthy recipe that turned out drab? There's no more sure fire way to amp things up than with the heat of crushed red pepper flakes. Add to grilled veggies, rice bowls, or any plain chicken dishes for a fresh flavor profile instantly.

Garlic Powder + Ground Black Pepper | Garlic powder adds a subtly sweet richness that helps enhance and unite flavors in a dish the way salt would, but without the sodium. Don't underestimate simple black pepper either. Sprinkle both onto roasted nuts, cooked veggies or into hummus for a quick hit of flavor that really satisfies.

Citrus Stuffed Peppers With Quinoa + Tarragon

Technically, stuffed peppers still count as part of our meals in bowls obsession. Chop the top of a bell pepper and you've got an edible bowl waiting to be stuffed and roasted.

Heather Cox of EatRealFoodNYC makes dishes like stuffed peppers easy, healthy and stylish. Her version of this classic dish gets an upgrade with fiber-rich quinoa, fresh tarragon and plenty of citrus. Check out her hemp pesto, lettuce strawberry wraps, and other recipes on TCM here - she's kind of amazing!

Let Go of Negativity With A Crystal Detox

Juice cleanse. Check. Yoga, a little meditation and daily journalling - triple check.

We've been intentional about transitioning to the new fall season, but are still feeling a little lingering mental and emotional negativity that needs clearing and love these two rituals from crystal healer, Heather Askinosie of Energy Muse for just that.

Rituals with crystals? Just remember, these kinds of exercises are all about you and what you're thinking, how you're feeling - adding the crstyals to the equation just helps amplify it all. Speaking out loud to ourselves might be a little unorthodox, but it just helps keep our intentions "crystal" clear!

As the seasons change and we move from summer into fall, it’s the perfect time to take nature’s lead and initiate change in our lives. Allowing yourself the space for inner reflection helps you to identify what limiting thoughts or habitual patterns keep you stuck. The more honest you can be with yourself, the easier it will be for you to break down the layers and break through the walls so you can embrace who you really are.

Fall celebrates change. Your bikinis are placed toward the back of your drawers and your boots come out of the closet as the weather begins to change. As the air becomes crisper and cooler, it’s important to remember to breathe even deeper. Through breath, we tap into an inner voice that says, “This year is coming to an end soon. What can I let go of now to shift, transform and evolve?” This is where your crystals come into play!

Black tourmaline will be your crystal ally to help you become aware and mindful of what no longer serves you (negativity, anger, fear, hurt, blame, etc.) so that you can consciously let go and allow a new energy to take that space. It’s very important to cleanse, purify and release all toxic, negative and unwanted energy from your home and energy body to keep yourself vibrating at your highest self. Once you have released this lower vibrational energy from your space, mind and body, you will feel clearer, focused and centered.

Are you ready to release any limiting thoughts to rid yourself of any negative mindsets? These two black tourmaline crystal rituals will purify and clear your mind, body and soul!

This fall, be a catalyst of change. Let go of what no longer serves you to awaken your highest potential![olists num=1][olists num=2]

Wellness for Introverts: 10 Ways To Live Well All By Yourself

Wellness doesn't work if we're freaking out throughout the journey, and for introverts, the trending, social side of it can be highly draining and generally distressing. If you relate, you're not alone. We had a revelation after a recent team trip to Pause. float studio in L.A. where we each spent a session floating in our own private saltwater pod: solitude can be bliss, and modalities that embrace it can be deeply transformative.

There's plenty of introverted goodness in the wellness world for you lone wolves to fall in love with: We're sharing ten introspective activities and environments to help you turn in, recharge and thrive, without missing out or having to suffer through any dreaded small talk...

Float in a pod designed for one | You know that feeling right before falling asleep where everything is calm, relaxed and totally detached from reality? Floating is designed to you settle into that same meditative state though water that's so salty (thanks 1,500 pounds of salt to be exact) you couldn't not float even if you wanted to. The solo set-up is designed to relax our muscles entierly while blocking out any distracting sensations our brains might latch onto: sight, sound and even feeling (the water is the same temp as our bodies!). Studios like Pause. (our new fave) provide a state of the art floating experience with private rooms for the ultimate wellness immersion experience for introverts: LEARN MORE HERE

Read your heart out | This one is a no brainer. Reading allows you to learn from the pros (without having to interact with them), process the info at your own pace and return to it whenever you like. No one even has to know what you know, but you'll have plenty to talk about when and if you feel like it. Cozy up in your favorite solo spot and get to feeding your brain with our top recommendations: LEARN MORE HERE + HERE.

Create a manifestation journal - alone, at home | Make things happen with your mind and sort out your emotional stuff at the same time! Knowing what we want is a key step to making it appear in our lives, with the challenge being finding clarity on it and commitment to it - something best done alone. We know youre not shy, but spending time with yourself to make what you want manifest means you don't have to ask someone else for help. LEARN MORE HERE.

Spend a full day on a productive emo purge | Feeling the feels? Don't worry, we don't have to talk about it. Get it out, reflect and move on by doing something creative, productive and physical with all that pent up angst. We love the idea of channeling that into a cathartic endeavor we can eat the fruits of (or cakes, or cookies or whatever). Trust us, beating some eggs or kneading some dough with mindful aggression is as good as any other therapy. LEARN MORE HERE.

Throw on a sheet mask and skip the spa! | No crowds, no human contact, just pure uninterrupted self-care bliss. Even if someone pops into your home spa-sesh, you can't exactly converse with a sheet mask on your face. Use it as an excuse to indulge in some seriously soothing solo time and look gorgeous after. LEARN MORE HERE.

Try that cupping thing from the Olympics | Yes, someone has to touch you, yes you'll need to talk with them a bit, but afterward you'll have alarming red sucker marks up and down your back that may just keep people from talking to you in line for coffee the next day. LEARN MORE HERE.

Get into an infrared cocoon to detox | Get cozy in a pod that's built for you to physically and mentally disappear into and come out of feeling transformed. Infrared spas are the perfect place to detox, tone and recharge from all that daily human interaction. LEARN MORE HERE + HERE.

Be alone in nature (and in luxury) | Getting outdoors is good for your mind body and soul - and you don't have to go to a human-polluted hike or park or rough it in the wilderness to enjoy it. Glamping allows you to explore a beautifully remote environment, while you bliss out with your tea, trees and luxury linens. Some spots even allow you to bring a pet if you want the company without the conversation. LEARN MORE HERE.

Get sweaty in the comfort and solitude of home | Gyms have so many people, so much sweat and so much energy that doesn't belong to you: it's amazing anyone actually goes, and no wonder introverts might want to stear clear! Working out in the privacy and comfort of your own home allows you to get fit on your own schedule and in your own space. We love resistance band workouts for a full body burn that doesn't even require equipment. LEARN MORE HERE

Hit up a meditation class | Yes, you'll be in a group setting - but with absolutely no obligation to talk to anyone! In fact, the teacher may frown upon it. Feel like an extro, act like an intro. We love MNDFL in NYC and Unplugged here in LA.

Your Smoothie Horoscope: 12 Smoothies For Every Sign

Yup, we went there... on the tails of mercury retrograde, we've tuned in to our subconscious only to realize our smoothie chakra is totally out of whack. We've found ourselves questioning every decision we've ever made and our blender has had a minor existential crisis too. To reclaim our identity, we've found a smoothie for every sign.

All jokes aside, astrology is an interesting way to relate to the world around us and feeds into an approach to wellness that feels personal and tastes like the cosmos hand picked it for you, which it did, which is why this is all happening. Share this with a friend who needs help figuring out who they are again...

Aries| The Spicy Grapefruit
Adventurous and passionate, aires need a smoothie that matches up with their intensity while helping to level it out. Grapefruit is bright and energizing and ginger is spicy, dynamic and detoxifying. Add a pinch of fresh mint to this recipe to help cool off that hot head. TRY IT HERE

Taurus| Strawberry, Basil + Avocado Smoothie
This grounded earth sign isn't one for the complicated or outrageous, but finds deep comfort from a little luxury. Avocado creates a luscious texture that tactile taurus will love to indulge in. Strawberry lights up their romantic nature, and nerve-calming, aromatic basil helps soothe the (sometimes overly) sensitive side of it. TRY IT HERE

Gemini| The Birthday Cake Smoothie
Gemini are playful, clever and always a little unexpected, which is why this birthday cake blend is a perfect pairing. Sipping on an almost-dessert for breakfast innocently appeals to their mischievous side, while offering a protein blast to keep this imaginative air sign's wit sharp. TRY IT HERE

Cancer| Coconut + Lemon Green Shake
As one of the most loyal and loving signs, Cancers know what it's like to really feel the feels. This nourishing smoothie will keep Cancer cool as a coconut, even amidst the moodiest mental state. A heavy hand to dark leafy greens means this smoothie is one they can stay loyal to, while tangy lemon both balances and keeps things exciting - just like a Cancer personality. TRY IT HERE

Leo| Tropical Green Smoothie
Warm-hearted Leo loves to be admired, and their giving nature and creative strength definitely warrant it! This pineapple smoothie cleverly conceals a generous serving of swiss chard behind a sweet blend of fruits and dates. This playful concoction is one that fun-loving fire sign Leo can share with friends - with high praise sure to follow. TRY IT HERE

Virgo| Chai Spice Smoothie Bowl
As the modest and practical brainiac of the zodiac, Virgo needs something that can multi-task to the max. We suggest making a functional morning routine of this chai-spiced smoothie bowl to get caffeinated and well-fed all at once. If you're a Virgo, not to over-think the layers of flavor in chai - mixing it in with coconut and vanilla creates a seamless yet stimulating blend even a perfectionist will love. TRY IT HERE

Libra|Berry Beauty Shake
Romantic and idealistic Libras have an artistic attraction to classic beauty - and a berry smoothie is about as classic as it gets. Just about any berries will blend well together making this smoothie an easily adaptable one you can switch up when they're feeling inspired by your surroundings (or being indecisive, as often is the case). This recipe in particular comes with beautifuying benefits A Libra is def going to love. TRY IT HERE

Scorpio| Vanilla Spice Cookie Shake
Scoprios are known for their passion, mystery, fiery magnetism (and mood). This off-beat blend features a mix of bold spices for a complex yet harmonious flavor that won't pin down or bore Scorpio with something too familiar. Cozy vanilla and cooling yogurt will keep any overly-spicy Scorpio flare-ups in check. TRY IT HERE

Sagittarius| Mango Mint Coconut Smoothie
Freedom-seeking and straightforward Sagittarius loves to explore: This mango smoothie is bright and uncomplicated (at least compared to some others in this list), featuring a flavor explosion of tropical vibes that'll instantly transport the tastebuds of any wanderlusting Sagittarius. A healthy dose of greens offers the nourishment needed to keep their energy and optimism high as ever. TRY IT HERE

Capricorn| Melon Beauty Elixir
This hydrating melon mix is perfect for notoriously practical and patient Capricorn. With only three ingredients and plenty of beautifying benefits for any glowifying-ambitions, the only downside is holding out until watermelon season comes back - but chances are a Capricorn will be just fine with waiting. TRY IT HERE

Aquarius| Beets
Recipe: Run Fast, Eat Slow pg. 28

Charismatic, inventive and independent, Aquarius can't be slowed down - so they need their smoothie to keep up! Antioxident rich beets add a little sweetness and a lot of heart-healthy power for an air-sign always on the run. A punch of ginger helps keep things lively and clear. We love the idea of root veggies in a smoothie because Aquarius is a little rebellious like that.

Pisces| Cashew Cream Mulberry Shake
(Pictured!) Compassionate and sensitive Pisces are known for their adaptability. This creamy blend is perfectly nourishing on its own, but can also be host to other stronger flavors. Tonic herbs, pine pollen and tocos, provides vitality and much-needed nourishing balance for the ones who usually do the nourishing for others. TRY IT HERE

Toxic Timeout: Why A Short Shelf-Life Is A Good Thing

Nothing lasts forever, nor should it - two important truths for life, relationships and especially household cleaning products. Buying products that are designed to live on our shelves for months, years or indefinitely (hello, red flag!) may save us a few extra trips to the store and dollars out of pocket, but when it comes to our health, what's the real cost of these preservative-laden purchases?

In this month's Toxic Timeout, Amy Ziff - the founder of MADE SAFE -is walking us thought the pervasiveness of toxic preservatives in products we use daily, how these chemicals can impact our health and some insider secrets for smarter - and safer - shopping...

Why Do Products Have Preservatives?

When manufacturing products like personal care, cosmetics and household cleaners, preservatives are necessary to prevent the growth of yeast, mold, bacteria, fungi and other micro-organisms. In today’s global marketplace, most products are expected to last for months or years without degrading, separating or spoiling. Preservatives are necessary to keep these products shelf-stable.

How Harmful Are Preservatives?

Preservatives can often be harsh and have a range of toxicity issues for humans or other animals in the ecosystem. For example, a common class of preservatives known generally as parabens are linked to increased risk of breast cancer, whereas methylchloroisothiazolinone, which is an isothiazolinone preservative, is incredibly toxic to aquatic life, according to the EPA.

Most people want the performance and shelf life of a product with a good preservative without the side effects of a preservative. The issue is that viable preservatives with zero human, environmental or aquatic toxicity are very hard to find and don’t always work in certain mixtures for complete coverage. This is why you’ll often see more than one preservative listed on a label. There can be a primary preservative and multiple “boosters.” There can also be preservatives that are sub-ingredients, meaning they aren’t listed on the product label because they are contained in another ingredient in a small amount.

Grapefruit-seed extract is a good example of why preservatives can be confusing. If this extract is sourced and made naturally, is not contaminated with GMOs or parabens, and there is no concern for amplifying prescription drugs in the system, then grapefruit-seed extract can be a useful preservative ingredient. However, grapefruit-seed extract is often not naturally derived and can be contaminated with concerning synthetic sub-ingredients that don’t appear on the label. This makes it difficult for the average consumer to determine if a product is acceptable for use simply by looking at an ingredient list.

What Should I Look For Instead?

Look for products with expiration dates. Brands that make products with simpler ingredients know that they won’t last for a decade on the shelves. Some may only last six months. This is actually a good thing! Although it does require a shift in mindset and perhaps adjusting the way you buy and use products.

When trying to parse the label on your own, look for essential oil preservatives over complex chemical ingredients that are hard to pronounce. Shop carefully and look for products from brands you trust. Look for third-party seals that evaluate ingredients, like MADE SAFE. This is exactly why our seal exists — we inspect how each ingredient is made, sourced and supplied before granting certification to a single product, including preservatives.

3 Beneficial Foods for PMS We’re Already Craving Anyway

Well, that's convenient. According to holistic wellness coach, Nicole Granato, these three crave-able eats are actually doing our bodies good at that taxing time of month. Chances are most of us need more healthy fat in our diets in general - and let's be real, an avocado fudge-pop seems like something we might be able to manage to get a hold of our hormones. Check out these three essential foods for PMS prevention, cramp management and a healthy cycle overall...

Healthy fats, protein and whole grains are among the most essential foods for women - and for a healthy menstrual cycle. We commonly think eating salads and low fat foods keeps us healthy, but this really may be doing the opposite for you when it comes to your monthly cycle. If your body does not get enough fat and whole grains containing iron, magnesium, fiber and a range of vitamins, it may have a hard time producing enough blood in your body in general, which will be harder for your monthly cycle to come! Try adding these foods into your diet for a healthier menstrual cycle.

Why Prebiotic Foods Matter Just As Much As Probiotics

No, That's not a typo. Prebiotic foods help create a cozy home for those essential gut health helpers we're always talking about - probiotics.

While we may be stocked up on kimchi and kombucha, prebiotic foods are key to help our bodies process all that healthy bacteria. Kitchen goddess, Candice Kumai has the full scoop on this often overlooked topic, including three incredible recipes from her modern classic cookbook, Clean Green Eats...

We know you’ve heard all about probiotics, as probiotics can help with gut health, clear skin, healthy brain function and can keep your immunity strong and well. I’d love to introduce you to prebiotics!

Prebiotics are plant fibers that feed your good bacteria (think food for bacteria), and they are essential to your body’s health and wellness. Prebiotics help your good bacteria to flourish. It’s important to have a healthy balance of good bacteria in your beautiful body, and to make sure you are getting both pre and pro-bacteria along with your daily vitamins and protein.

favorite prebiotic foods include: oats, bananas, dandelion greens, asparagus, flax seeds, chia seeds, edamame, avocado, raw garlic and onion.

Just as it’s important to focus on your health and daily meals, it’s essential to get a healthy serving of prebiotic foods on your plate every day to feed your probiotics and continue to keep them strong! I’ve selected a few of my favorite prebiotic recipes for you to try. Delish![olists num=3][olists num=2][olists num=1]

Do Celebrities Influence How We Shop? Let’s Talk About It

Do celebrities influence our shopping habits? On one hand, it's a silly question. Of course we're influenced by the public figures in our social feeds and on our magazine covers. They say we become like those we spend the most time with and, in the same sense, are we not being influenced by those most often appearing on our screens, big and handheld? We're inspired by people we admire to shop the things they vouch for. But, on the other hand, we also somehow believe we're immune to all these celebrity endorsements. Are we just kidding ourselves? (When it comes to the category-defying bastions of style, the Olsens, quite possibly, yes.)

Over the past few weeks there has been a lot of buzz about Kim Kardashian stocking up on Pressed Juicery's charcoal lemonade, a product we literally keep stocked in our office fridge everyday (see why here). We already love this detoxifying juice, there's no doubt, but somehow knowing that this body-conscious babe relies on it as well made us feel like our favorite juice got an upgrade.

We're influenced by celebrities all the time, we must admit. Even if that influence is subtle...we're just not sure how we feel about it. Certainly, celebs are not our top influence - we'd like to think our families, friends, favorite teachers, authors, artists and thinkers influence us much more. But the influence of celebrity these days cannot be denied.

Often, we experience the effect of celeb behavior, style or buying habits as a super subtle, overarching trend that settles in to our opinions on fashion, beauty, health and culture. There's not necessarily a hierarchy for these influences, the most tasteful celeb does not usually take the cake - often, it's the other way around: we're influenced by whomever most frequently appears in the day's headlines.

We think we're pretty savvy consumers. Wouldn't you say so of yourselves? How do you feel about the undeniable celebrity influence - however big or small - on your own consumer behaviors and cultural perceptions of things? We want to hear from you on this topic and thought our charcoal juice experience was the perfect opportunity. Weigh in below!

Sleep matters. Like, a lot. But these ideas from certified holistic nutritionist, Kristin Dahl, have nothing to do with getting a full eight hours. Most of us could use more energy and are overlooking these easy opportunities to get pumped up. Here are nine ways to nurture our systems daily for more energy and head-to-toe balance - especially during that extra energy-draining time of the month. Be sure to click through the links for recipes and more info on each point...

Due to excess stress, environmental toxins and endocrine disruptors, most of us experience hormonal imbalances intermittently throughout our lifetimes. As we age, our overburdened systems no longer tolerate the high-sugar, low-protein, minimal-sleep, high-toxin lifestyle of our youth. We begin to require regularity in all areas of our life to nourish and balance our constitution in order to thrive vibrantly like we once did effortlessly.

There are several remedies and tools that work to re-regulate our body systems to increase energy, reduce PMS symptoms, boost libido and enhance fertility. As each of us is unique, we all require slightly different protocols to re-align and heal. Even so, the following considerations can offer radical transformation for most...

Support the lymph System:

The lymphatic system is a complicated network of fluid-filled nodes, vessels, glands and organs that are present throughout the body. Although we may not see or feel it, the lymphatic system is a key detoxification pathway. It cleanses toxins and protects us against harmful invaders. It works by carrying toxins away from the tissues and into the bloodstream, where it can be filtered by two of the body’s main detoxification organs: the liver and kidneys. Support lymphatic detoxification by properly hydrating throughout the day, exercising daily, dry brushing, rebounding, getting regular massages and using breathwork techniques or practicing breath-focused forms of yoga. It’s also imperative that we keep our detoxification pathways clean by cleansing seasonally with whole foods, focused self-care routines, spiritual practice and stress reduction.

 Increase Protein:

Start every day with healthy fats and proteins. Think blueberry-based smoothie with protein powder and coconut mct oil + cinnamon, or eggs and greens + avocado. Include protein at every meal and never go longer than three hours without eating. Eat well-balanced snacks by combining crunchy foods with healthy fats and protein-rich foods like hummus, pesto, guacamole, hard-boiled eggs and nuts, paired with crunchy veggies.

Reach for foods low on the glycemic index. These foods convert slowly to energy in the bloodstream, helping you feel more balanced. Low-GI foods include low-sugar fruits (like berries), low-starch vegetables, nuts and seeds... and protein-rich foods. Consume more complete proteins like quinoa, buckwheat, amaranth, spinach, tempeh, coconut yogurt, eggs, hemp seeds, goji berries, chia seeds and most protein powders. When combined, the following foods make complete proteins: beans and rice, nuts and grains (oatmeal with nuts), nuts and beans, lentils and rice.

 Drink more water:

When you hydrate properly, extra salt leaves your body in your urine and will help stop swelling and bloating that can both be uncomfortable and drain our energy. Adequate water intake also ensures that you will be hydrated, eliminating regularly and supporting the regulation of all body systems so they don't have to work harder than they need to. Shoot for half your body weight in ounces daily!

 Reduce caffeine intake:

Caffeine can cause blood-sugar fluctuations and stress the adrenals. It is also highly stimulating to the nervous system and overconsumption increases cortisol and adrenalin production. Eliminating/reducing your intake will help to alleviate general pain, menstral cramps, reduce internal stress and decrease overall body tension. This will also give your adrenals a chance to rebalance and heal. Try this around your cycle and you will notice a dramatic shift.

Increase fiber:

High-fiber foods like whole grains, legumes, cruciferous vegetables and low-sugar fruits will help the body to effectively eliminate excessive hormones from the intestines and liver, particularly estrogen.  Cruciferous vegetables are high in indole-3 carbinol, which supports liver detoxification. These food sources are also loaded with protein and B vitamins to nourish the endocrine system and support the adrenals.

Reduce/eliminate sugary snacks + processed foods:

Cravings for sweets trend upward when you're tired, under stress or have PMS, but cookies, sweets and processed foods will send your blood-sugar levels on a roller coaster ride. When you have a blood-sugar crash later on, you’ll feel tired and irritable. Limiting your sugar supply sets the stage for steadier moods and stable blood sugar. Around your cycle especially, load up on sweet potatoes, which offer a natural source of sweetness and are high in antioxidants and fiber. Eat more avocados and bananas - both are rich in potassium, which plays a huge role in keeping mood swings in check. This important mineral also helps to reduce fluid retention and decrease bloating. Lack of adequate potassium can lead to muscle cramping, which is possibly the worst symptom of all. In addition, B6 may improve mood, irritability and breast tenderness.

Reduce salt:

Too much salt increases fluid retention, creating excess bloating and fatigue. Processed foods such as canned soups and packaged snacks are especially high in sodium as well, so avoid them whenever possible. Be sure to reduce salt the week before your cycle and be sure you are using low-sodium, mineral-rich Himalayan salt.

Use Herbal Support:

Use ashwaganda as an adoptogenic hormone balancer - it works to heal adrenals, rebalance hormones and support restorative sleep. Ashwaganda is best in tincture form. Add in turmeric to help reduce energy-draining inflammation. Drink chamomile tea, as it contains properties that relieve muscle spasms and may therefore help reduce the severity of menstrual cramps. In addition, chamomile also reduces tension that may lead to anxiety and irritability. Red raspberry leaf tea remineralizes the body, is high in B vitamins and tones the uterus, relieving menstrual cramping. Drinking milk thistle and dandelion tea throughout the month also helps to keep the liver clean, enhances digestion and supports blood-sugar regulation.

Increase your mineral intake:

Consume magnesium-rich foods; vital for regulating hundreds of functions in the body, magnesium plays an important role in preventing mood swings and irritability, poor sleep, headaches, bloating and fluid retention. Add more magnesium-rich foods to your diet, such as pumpkin seeds, dark leafy greens, figs and bananas.

Increase iron-rich foods before and during your menses to replace what you’ve lost each month and to avoid anemia. High sources of iron include: beet root, spinach, dark leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, lentils, chickpeas, navy beans, kidney beans, olives and nettle tea. Blackstrap molasses also contains 3.5 mg of iron per tablespoon, and has been used in folk medicine as a "blood builder" for centuries.

Don’t Over Dewy It: How To Highlight The Right Way

You glow, girl. This step-by-step process (mask, moisture, Cosmic Dancer!) from celebrity makeup artist, Katey Denno will teach you how to highlight right. We all know there is a wrong way. So wrong.

Katey is a pro who never fails us (yes, you ARE seeing a lot of her lately!) when it comes to nailing the looks we love, from flawless natural brows to a sheer smokey eye. This pro guide to highlighting addresses skin health and makeup - crucial. Skin goals all the way with gorgeous up-and-comer, Annaliese Ugalde...

As the seasons change, it's imperative to keep skin hydrated in order to maintain a healthy glow. Finding the right recipe of toner, serum and moisturizer is a must. But what about adding a little extra glow in just the right places with a highlighter? You may have read that 'strobing' (adding a luminescent highlight strategically to your face, by using either a cream or a powder) is all the rage. Well, this way of tricking the eye by adding 'light' has been a very popular technique that creates dimension and an overall more youthful light-bounce to the face forever. It's just that the products to make this kind of magic happen have gotten better and much easier to use. Reflective particles have gotten smaller, creating a much more natural - and much less glittery - appearance, and textures are more buttery, allowing them to blend and melt into the skin - again, in powder, cream and even liquid.

In order to replicate Annaliese's look of total radiance on yourself, using nothing but the best in products that are nothing but good for your skin, these are the essential products and process I recommend...

Face Mask: Weekly masking to draw out impurities is a great idea for those who are annoyed by those little under-the-skin bumps. One of my favorites is the chocolate mask from Jenette All Natural Skincare.

Face Oil: Whether you're new to using oils and serums or an experienced pro, if you haven't tried The Revitalizer from Biossance, you're missing out. It's honestly great for all skin types from the most sensitive and/or acne prone, to dull and dehydrated. Three drops pressed into a damp face is the best way to prep.

Moisturizer: If you're still feeling dry in certain parts, but not others, try adding another layer of moisture just where you need it. Try the cool new Flash Hydro Boost from Ren that you massage in, just where you need it (or all over, of course). Wet your finger tips and then massage that in until fully absorbed. It really does lock in moisture. Let your hydration layers absorb for two minutes (I like to use this time to brush my teeth).

Foundation:Apply a foundation ever so lightly to the center of your face, blending outwards with either clean fingers, a brush, or my favorite - a dampened beauty blender, squeezed free of water in a towel just prior to using. I'm loving blending Kjaer Weis's foundation under eyes, around the sides of the nose, and anywhere else skin tone may be uneven. I'm also a big fan of the foundation sticks from Vapour Organic Beauty.

Highlighter: Now it's time to play with your highlighter. On Annaliese I used Ilia Beauty highlighter stick in 'Cosmic Dancer,' warming it up between my fingers, then pressing it along her cheekbones, in the inner corner of her eyes and along the bridge of her nose. You can also apply it on the cupid’s bow for a little added attention to your top lip.

Chef’s Table + 10 Other Top Documentaries To Watch Now

Which docs are you obsessed with? Same. Maybe? We think we know what you might like and this hit list from our friends at Darling is pretty close to it.

We can't get enough of every season of Chef's Table - and you should check out our coverage of GMO, OMG, The True Cost, and everything our friends at Food Matters have to say about health docs!

1. Chef’s Table
The same man (David Gelb) who created Jiro Dreams of Sushi thought up this docu-series, so it’s no surprise that it is a visual masterpiece. Feast your eyes here if you are remotely intrigued by foreign flavors, faraway lands, or the grand risks that the world’s highest ranked chefs take in order to pursue their passion for creating and feeding people. Although you may be tempted to start this series from its beginning, we recommend starting with episode three of the first season. It’s the biographical piece on Francis Mallmann, in which Patagonia’s scenery is stunningly crisp and the chef’s tactics so wonderfully complement it.

2. Janis: Little Girl Blue

This recent release is a work by Oscar-nominated director, Amy Berg. It lets us into the deeper caverns of Janis Joplin’s life story, which is an innovative feat. Joplin’s creative life is laid bare here, as Berg ventured to tell her story in a way that honored the artist’s own, genuine perspective. Berg stated, “The only way to tell Janis’ story was through Janis’ voice. Her letters show the vulnerable artist, daughter, and lover Janis was in her short but impactful life.” While Joplin’s tumultuous story is a heavier choice, we find this lead female rock ‘n’ roller’s story to be a necessary window into the history of American women’s relationship with music.

3. Alive Inside: A Story of Music & Memory

While we’re on the topic of music, we found this documentary to be particularly unique. If you are looking for an uplifting, mentally-stimulating watch, this would be it. Filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett reveals the healing quality of music, its ability to overcome human medical travesties where medication is not enough. Social worker Dan Cohen is shown utilizing the great power of music to combat Alzheimer’s and redeem people from years of solitude and hopelessness. Those who are featured in this film are truly seen brought to life by the freedom of song.

4. Private Violence

This piece, directed by Cynthia Hill, is a flame held up to the frustratingly common exploitation of women. In the film two survivors of domestic violence, Deanna Walters and Kit Gruelle, bravely share their experiences with partner abuse. Their stories debunk modern assumptions and unveil the reality of an ugly, invisible world that lurks within the homes of too many. On this visual platform, women claim their voice; they are heard and they are finally honored in their truth. Both women guide us into a future without domestic violence.

5. Happy

We’d call this one of those “oldies but goodies.” Released in 2011, it might not be so old, but it already feels like a classic. Director Roko Belic takes his audience on an adventure to answer the infamous question: What really makes people happy? He broadcasts people’s experiences with happiness, pointing us in a direction to achieving greater happiness throughout our days. Watching this is akin to listening to a chorus of wise elders whispering into our ears, “These are the things you must practice before you die, young ones!”

6. Somm: Into the Bottle

If you consider yourself a wine connoisseur in any capacity, this documentary was pressed for your palette. The engaging sequel to Somm, this piece is segmented into 10 chapters and conveys the multi-faceted process of winemaking, without forsaking the ultimate enjoyment of drinking it. Wine, beer, and spirits writer Esther Mobley shared in her review of the film, “As a wine lover, I’m most interested in this question when it comes to books, films, TV shows about wine: Does it convey the pleasure of drinking wine? That’s the ultimate litmus — and the reason that any sommelier (even those that love taking hard tests) does what she does. On this count, Somm: Into the Bottle succeeds. It leaves you thirsty.”

7. Virunga

Deep in the Congo is Virunga National Park, where the last mountain gorillas live. Orlando von Einsiedel and Leonardo DiCaprio have teamed up to share the bold work of a small band of park rangers, including an ex-child soldier, an orphaned gorillas’ caretaker, and a conservationist who preserve and safeguard this UNESCO world heritage site from its adversaries. While militia and poachers threaten to undertake this area, its protectors remain emboldened with their convictions and, further into the documentary, even the filmmakers get involved in the tumult that surrounds this corner of the world. This one truly is a grand story, complete with risk, courage, and relevant purpose.

8. Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief

If you have ever been curious about the grey controversy that lies beneath Scientology, please sit down to this film. Alex Gibney presents eye-opening angles by shining a light on former members of the Church of Scientology, revealing a highly discomforting abundance of injustices that skulk beneath its facade. This pick surely does provide a refreshing clarity and leaves us with a renewed sense of moral conviction to stand by those values which ring true to our very bones, rather than submitting to the faulty authority of those who might be hungry for power.

9. Twinsters

This one is a miraculous product of modern technology and, in an interesting way, it speaks to a deep sense of wonder that all humans can relate to. (Remember being a kid and questioning whether there was another person “out there” with your same interests, your same thoughts, your same face?) Samantha Futerman and Ryan Miyamoto record the incredible inter-national discovery and reunion of two separated twins, one of which being Futerman herself. Futerman and Anaรฏs Bordier, adopted from South Korea and raised on different continents, find one another through social media and spectacularly reconnect.

10. (Dis)Honesty: The Truth about Lies

This documentary appeals to one of our most commonplace curiosities. It reaches out to help us understand why lying is so prolific when we have all been taught its inherent immoral value. Intriguingly, it accomplishes a kind of human unification, humbling us with the reminder we are not as perfect as we might have previously believed; we are instead united in our flawed nature.

11. Unbroken Ground

There’s a saying that the earth is not inherited from our ancestors but borrowed from our children. As much as we may have the best intentions to learn more about where our food comes from or what’s in season, our consumer culture disconnects us from the land, and can leave us asking too small of questions. In Unbroken Ground, Director Chris Malloy introduces agricultural pioneers challenging the environmental crisis by implementing biodiversity and regenerative methods for farming and fishing. Here you’ll meet families and towns who have made their livelihoods and local economies part of a new revolution.

The Power of EFT Tapping + How Can It Help You Heal

We work hard to help ourselves heal (physically, emotionally and spiritually), but sometimes - if you're a human - the damage runs deeper than we can reach on our own. EFT tapping is a fascinating therapeutic technique designed to tear down the emotional barriers blocking us from accessing all-encompassing wellness. Integrative nutritionist and self-love sageJennie Miremadi, has experienced the transformative benefits of EFT tapping firsthand, and wants us all to feel the freedom of releasing the weight of emotional baggage. Here's Jennie...

Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT (often called tapping) has been touted as a solution for a whole host of issues, including: stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD, trauma, physical pain, phobias, weight management, cravings, and scholastic, business, athletic and artistic performance issues. As an EFT tapping practitioner, people often ask me two questions: what exactly is EFT? And, does it actually work? Let's explore...

What is EFT?

EFT tapping is a technique designed to help reduce the intensity and impact of prior traumatic events. EFT functions on the assumption that people can improve most areas of their lives by removing or releasing unresolved emotional barriers. Indeed, EFT is often described as emotional acupuncture without the needles.

how do you do it?

In EFT, you use your fingers to tap on particular points of your body and face that are specified in traditional Chinese acupuncture and situated on energy pathways–called meridians–that run through your body. While tapping on the meridian points, you simultaneously think about a past event, incident, or memory that evokes a negative emotion. Thinking about the event coupled with simultaneous meridian point tapping is believed to release or lessen the intensity of the negative emotion. This makes it possible to think about that same event, incident, or memory with a much lower emotional charge or without experiencing any negative emotion at all.

What's It Used For?

Here’s an example of how EFT tapping works: let’s pretend that three years ago you tripped in front of a huge audience right before you were about to give a speech. When you think about this incident, you feel embarrassed and angry with yourself for not being more careful. Imagine you were to rate your level of embarrassment on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being the most embarrassed you could be and 0 being not at all embarrassed. You also rate your anger on the same scale.

If your embarrassment was a 5 before starting EFT and your anger a 7, after doing rounds of EFT, these levels are likely to drop to a 0, so that you can think about the time when you tripped without feeling embarrassed or angry. After doing EFT, your perspective might also shift so that instead of feeling angry with yourself for not being more careful, you might believe that you were brave for getting back up and giving the speech after tripping. EFT may help you feel a profound sense of relief and unburdening about a particular memory, in addition to potentially changing your perspective on it.

You can also use EFT to address broader issues and beliefs. But, because EFT assumes that our specific life experiences form our issues and beliefs, you use EFT on specific events related to those issues and beliefs, not on the issues and beliefs themselves. For example, if you believe “I am a failure,” you wouldn’t use EFT directly on the broad issue of “I am a failure.” You would identify distinct memories from your past that support your belief of “I am a failure.” It might be that time in 8th grade when you auditioned for the school play, but didn’t get the part, and then in high school when you tried out for the soccer team but didn’t make it. You would make a list of all of the events supporting your belief of “I am a failure” and use EFT on each of them.

But... Does It Actually Work?

Using EFT to clear the specific incidents that make up your belief of “I am a failure,” makes it possible for the belief itself to ultimately crumble. However, clearing a belief or issue rarely happens overnight. Even though you might clear a specific event related to the belief “I’m a failure” in one or two EFT sessions, the broader belief of “I am a failure” is unlikely to be gone in such a short amount of time, especially if there are numerous unaddressed incidents from your past still supporting that belief. Thus, keep in mind that while EFT has the potential to be life-changing, working through issues and beliefs can take time.

For the skeptics out there who think EFT not only looks strange, but also sounds too good to be true, there are scientific research studies published in peer-reviewed journals that support use of EFT for anxiety, depression, phobias, PTSD, pain, physical issues, weight loss, cravings, professional and sports performance.

For example, three separate randomized controlled trials (“RCTs”) found that one EFT session was generally sufficient to resolve phobias. Each of the studies also included a period for participant follow-up and found that participants’ phobias remained at substantially lower levels than before the EFT treatment. In another RCT where EFT was used with war veterans, after six EFT sessions, participants’ symptoms of PTSD dropped to a “normal” range and remained at that level upon follow-up. And, an RCT of participants in an EFT-based program for weight loss found that during the year following the weight loss program, program participants lost 11.1 pounds on average. These are just a few of the many studies that support EFT’s effectiveness.

Despite this abundance of supporting research, I have read stories of and encountered people who have previously tried EFT and have said that it didn’t work or the positive effects didn’t last. In an upcoming part II of this series on TCM, find out why many people aren’t reaping the benefits of EFT, how to avoid ineffective EFT and tips for using the practice effectively on your own.

Have you heard of EFT tapping? Have you tried it? Would you want to?

NYC Bite of the Month: OCA Positive Food’s Gluten-Free Taco Crepe

We're never sure just what our New York lady, Kat Odell is going to send us each month in our NYC Bite of the Month series. We've seen goat milk lattes, Peruvian zoodle bowls (it's a thing), and discovered Inday, thanks to Kat and now she serves up this.

These gluten-free tapioca crepes are essentially healthy Brazillian tacos and Eater editor, Kat Odell, is all over the budding trend: starting with these beet-dyed babies, and now on to this stuffed version by OCA Positive Food. Get into this Brazillian buzz food below...

What I Ate: OCA's tapioca crepe stuffed with cubed serrano ham, buffalo mozzarella, dates, walnuts and basil.

Why I Ate It: Because tapioca-based gluten-free crepes are a fantastic, healthier bread replacement. They're devoid of gluten, grain and sugar, and take on a chewy, mochi-esque texture.

Why You Need It: Though New York already counts a few Brazilian cafes that serve regional staples like pรฃo de queijo (chewy Brazilian cheese bread) made with manioc (what we in the U.S. know as tapioca, or cassava/yuca) flour, newbie OCA in Soho is the city's first eatery dedicated to crepos (crepe + taco?!) made from that same ingredient. Personally, I love the chewiness of Japanese mochi and these crepes - which serve as a blank canvass for pretty much any flavor combination - offer a similar chew, plus they're an awesome and better-for-you bread replacement.

You Need This: How To Destress Fast With Yogi Tara Stiles

What are We doing (but, actually) while that smoothie is blending, that first phone call of the day puts us on hold or our favorite show goes to commercial? We're taking the challenge to put those moments in between to good work and boost our capacity for living well.

This undemanding (but impactful) meditation from the new book, Strala Yoga, by rebel yogi and two-time TCM Guest Editor Tara Stiles, is an instant destresser. Super key as we prepare our immune systems for the colder weather (learn more about the connection here and here). Set a timer for five minutes, take a deep breath and try out Tara's quick and dirty destress meditation below...

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in my life so far is that change — whether small or large — starts with me. I needed to let go of tension, frustration, and judgment so I could be more loving in the world, which would translate into others feeling more loved and more loving. I could create a ripple effect of love if I could change my own ways. We all go through tense moments, days, weeks and even years, but it’s never too late to soften, relax and connect right back inside. With a few simple breaths, we can reconnect to ourselves.

I learned this meditation from my good friend Mallika Chopra. She learned it as a kid from her dad, Deepak Chopra. It’s about connecting to what matters most in your life and formulating a clear intent about how you want to be in the world. It’s incredibly useful as a daily practice, and it’s especially practical when we feel swept up in the stress of life.

So let’s take a moment to reconnect in order to shift how you feel. Freeing yourself from this will help create a shift beyond just you...What do you need to let go of? What’s holding you back?

A 5-Minute Meditation for Stress Relief

Sit Down. Settle into a seated position, however you are comfortable.

Turn In. Close your eyes and allow your attention to drift inward. Allow yourself to sway side to side and forward and back to find a nice, neutral, balanced place.

Inhale. Take a big breath in and lift your arms out and up overhead. Press your palms together and bring your thumbs to your heartbeat. Soften here for a moment. Take another big inhale through your nose.

Exhale. Breathe out through your mouth. Twice more just like that. Settle here for a moment.

Explore. Take a moment and ask yourself the following questions silently. There is no need to come up with an answer; just ask and allow space for the question to settle with you. Take a few moments in between questions: Who am I? What do I want? How can I serve?

Return. When you are ready, open your eyes and relax your hands on your thighs.

This Gluten-Free Zucchini Pizza Crust Changes Everything

WE WOULDN'T EXPECT pizza to be a solution for loading up on more greens, but are happy to be surprised by this veggied version from plant-based blogger McKel Hill. This green pizza from her new cookbook, Nutrition Stripped piles in three distinct layers of fresh green goodness, and its health factor isn't diluted by piles of cheese or a carby crust. Find the recipe below and get even more from this plant-based blogger babe here!

Zucchini is a surprisingly chameleon-like vegetable. I find myself using it in everything - frozen in morning smoothies, pureed in desserts and, now, grated in pizza crust! Zucchini pizza is a great way to sneak in extra servings of vegetables and it is naturally lower in carbohydrates and higher in five than traditional crusts.

This recipe pays homage to the cauliflower crust, which is one of my most popular recipes from the blog. Both of these recipe components, the crust and pea pesto, can be enjoyed on their own, yet when combined, it’s evident they’re meant to be enjoyed together. [olists num=1][olists num=2]

This Coconut-Kale Smoothie Will Change The Way You Cardio

Green means go. And Shalane Flanagan should know - she's a record breaking long distance runner with four Olympics under her belt.  We love seeing real life recipes like this kale smoothie from athletes like Shalane who aren't joking around about energy levels.

This dynamic, fruitless kale smoothie is her own personal running fuel and comes from her New York Times bestselling cookbook, Run Fast, Eat Slow. We haven't seen a ton of cookbooks from athletes, but we're hoping the break out success of this one starts a trend! Try this super-hydrating protein smoothie from the book with this note from Shalane on how it came to be...

Portland, where we live, is a small city packed to the brim with creative people churning out incredible food. Lucky for us, you don’t have to go to a fancy restaurant to experience an inspiring dish. In fact, some of our favorite spots to chow down are the endless food carts. And one of our favorite carts to cruise by when we’re in need of a health fix is the Kure Juice Bar.

This kale smoothie recipe is inspired by our go-to smoothie at the Kure. Not surprisingly, it’s called The Extra Mile. One sip of this refreshing, fruit-free smoothie and you’ll be ready to go (and keep going).

Join The tribe – Mornings With Philosophie’s Sophie Jaffe

With an instagram tribe the size of a small digital village, a line of coconut butters and the like that give life to smoothies everywhere, and a few adorable mini-me yogis always in tow, Sophie Jaffe is living proof that her Philosophie superfoods really do give a girl the kind of high-vibe energy she claims.

Amongst our regular TCM contributors, Sophie is probably the most energetic - and possibly the most bendy! We're blaming it on the Green Dream coconut butter jars that can be found in every corner of her life--once you try the stuff, you'll understand.

Enjoy this glimpse at Sophie's morning routine with her boys, her yoga and all those superfoods. Get inspired, find a tip to work into your own morning and consider replacing one of those grouchy A.M. impulses for one of these intention-setting rituals...

A Homemade Tea Recipe That Might Help With PMS

PMS is no jokeWe're always intrigued by natural remedies for the cramps - and the crazy - that roll in around that time of month, and a homemade tea with red clover and mint may be just what the doctor ordered. This herbal recipe comes from woods-dwelling writer, shamanism student and Our Body Book contributor, Vanessa Kunderman, who's helping us forage our way into feeling better...

Foraging has always been innate in my family, and there is something exceptionally grounding about harvesting something from the earth’s wild belly, and savoring it in the comfort of the home.

It’s my first summer in our new home outside of the city, and our land is teeming with lush, organic plant life. It seems every week there is something new in bloom, from the tubers on wild hazelnut trees, to the sunburst of flaming tiger lilies. One of my favorite finds is red clover.

I first heard of the health benefits of red clover when I began having irregular periods as a young adult, and it was touted to relieve PMS symptoms. But red clover is such a rich source of estrogen-like chemicals called isoflavones, that it not only soothes some of the irritations during your monthly cycle, but menopause as well.

Isoflavones are a plant-derived chemical that is easily recognized by the body, helping the body to purify the blood and acting like a diuretic to detoxify and balance the immune system while equalizing estrogen. Since it’s relatively easy to find, it makes a great partner for a light and earthy tea.

NOTE: Whenever ingesting any form of wild harvest, always be sure that there are no chemicals or toxins near by, such as exhaust from vehicles or harmful pesticides. Always consult your doctor to be safe when trying something new; red clover is not for everyone, particularly those struggling with certain cancers.

Happiness. Our September Guest, Julianne Hough, actually helped to redefine the word in the Merriam-Webster dictionary. (True story, keep reading.)

There's not a one-size-fits-all answer to the question of how to be successful, but personal happiness is surely part of the equation. Keeping important relationships intact while reaching for your dreams is not always easy, but necessary according to our September Guest Editor, Julianne Hough, who literally danced her way to the top - and still has great girlfriends to speak of. It's not a feat not every woman has been able to achieve.

We asked Julianne to share what success and life balance look like to her and we love what she had to say. Hard work and dedication to her own health helped land her a career doing what she loves most - dance! And that same passion has helped her keep life in balance while developing other successful endeavors, including a new collab with fitnesswear brand MPG Sport...

Living Well with Celeb Nutritionist Kelly LeVeque (Smoothie Heaven, Basically)

We know a lot of nutritionists (like, a lot). What we love about one of our fave contributors, Kelly LeVeque, is that she dazzles with her smile one moment and knocks people off their feet with her clinical knowledge the next! This girl knows what's up with your gut and your fridge - and it doesn't hurt that she counts everyone from Jessica Alba to Kate Walsh as clients.

We're starting to ask a few of our favorite friends and contributors the Q's we normally reserve for celebs and top doctors. Their answers have begun pouring in - and we're loving them! Read through Kelly's thorough answers to our Living Well With... feature below and expect to take notes!

My food philosophy in one sentence: Less rules; more light livable structure. Less cleanses; more daily cleansing.

Daily supplements: I like simple supplementation with the most important vitamins and minerals to support my cellular function.
My daily supplements include: vitamin D/K2, Omega3 Innovations Omega Cure, soil-based probiotics, B-rich multivitamin and magnesium or rhodiola as needed for stress or sleep.

At least once a week I cook…Tacos! Shrimp, fish or grass-fed beef smothered in guac and loaded with veggies.

Go-to juice or smoothie: My Be Well Spa Smoothie! Get the recipe below, and check out my TCM article for tips on crafting a functional smoothie.

Daily breakfast: I always start my day with one of the low sugar, meal replacement smoothie recipes I created for my clients! My Be Well Smoothie formula helps develop a blood-sugar balancing meal in any flavor with enough protein, fat and fiber to keep you full for four to six hours, feed your microbiome, turn off hunger hormones and nourish your body with amino acids, fatty acids and phytonutrients. It limits fruit to 1/4 -1/2 cup, depending on your body composition goals, and some are totally fruit free. A killer go-to is my Spa Smoothie, loaded with greens, cucumber, avocado, lemon and mint (find my recipe below!).

Ingredient in products I always avoid: High omega 6 oils such as safflower, sunflower, corn, cottonseed and soybean oil. These industrial seed oils are in a number of processed foods (even the healthy ones!) and can throw off the delicate balance of omegas in the body creating an inflammatory state. I focus on protecting that balance by decreasing omega 6 oils and increasing my wild-fatty-fish intake.

Fave healthy food on the go: I lean on grocery and health stores with a salad and hot bar like Erewhon (see trends!) or Whole Foods (how we splurge!). I can easily grab salmon and roasted veggies, a chicken salad or lentil soup and kale salad.
The Fab Four is a light structure I built to help my clients remember what nourishing foods they should eat to elongate their blood-sugar curve, support hormone production, microbiome proliferation and healthy body composition. The Fab Four is simply; protein, fat, fiber and greens! Hot or cold, cooked or raw it allows you to eat what you love and mix it up! In combination, the Fab Four works to turn off eight hunger hormones in the body, it ensures you are getting the essential fatty and amino acids you need for cell regeneration and helps you build a complete meal that will keep you satisfied for four to six hours so you eat more real foods and less fake snacks.

Fave workout: Working out is a moving meditation for me, so... I prioritize what's going to make me the happiest at the time. Choosing the right workout always comes down to what fits in my schedule, the instructor and what my body is craving. I workout 4-6 days a week and my schedule is constantly changing so I have a laundry list of L.A. favorites including: Orange Theory Fitness, SoulCycle, Cyclehouse, Maha Yoga, Yoga Hop, Playlist, The Body or a private training session with my friend Mike Alexander of Madfit. It's all about consistency and getting at least 1-2 days of strength in to maintain tone and metabolism.

Once a week for my health I... Soak in an Epsom salt bath (1 cup Epsom salt and a few drops of essential oils) and read a good book without my phone or just breathe. Honestly, it’s all about carving just a little me time out and listening close enough to hear what I need in the moments of downtime. I also make sure to carve out time for human touch! Making time for sex or serious cuddling releases dopamine in the brain to combat stress and nourishes my most precious relationship: the one between my husband and myself.

3 staples always on my vanity: Organic oils and my Honest Makeup. I am literally addicted to facial oils and my medicine cabinet is stocked: calendula from Eminence, squalane from Oak & Ashland, marula from African Organics and this blend from CocoKind. Face oil is my organic secret for preventing breakouts, staying hydrated and preventing wrinkles. If my skin needs a little extra love I will go for one of my stronger serums like vitamin C with hyaluronic, post exfoliating.

Current reading list:
The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo by Amy Schumer.
Pretty Happy by Kate Hudson.
Always Hungry? by David Ludwig MD.

5 things always in my travel gear: Protein powder packets, individual fat packs from Artisana (coconut oil, coconut butter and walnut butter) and my Primal Kitchen Collagen Bars.

I prefer real meals, however; in a pinch I can whip up an airport shake or munch on a clean-protein and fat-based snack. You will also always find my yoga tune-up balls and workout gear - the best thing post long flight is a sweat and fascia release.

Fave healthy getaway: Four Seasons Maui! I love the island - from the moment I step off the plane I am transported to the surf days of summer in high school. I naturally wake up early for sunrise yoga, eat loads of fatty fish and organic produce, enjoy a the juice bar and paddle out to catch as many waves as humanly possible before sunset.

Non-negotiable: Quality protein, produce and pantry products! I love to eat out, travel and celebrate life so I like to ensure my kitchen at home is an organic sanctuary.

My protein powder is organic, non-GMO and tested for heavy metals. I order grass-finished beef monthly from the Butcher Box and wild fish from Vital Choice. My go-to eggs are pasture raised and omega-3 rich (fed flax seeds) from Vital Farms. My produce is organic or pesticide-free from the farmers market. I use Thrive Market for my dry, canned and packaged goods. (This is a great way to snag a deal: ask your farmers market vendors if they follow organic practices most of the time, but can’t afford the organic certification.)

Simplest way to improve health: Enjoy the journey! Transforming our mindset, our nutrition and our bodies is a journey. It takes practice to be present, to see that big leaps start with small steps and to not get discouraged if we have setbacks. Learn to enjoy it by breaking your “big goals” down into attainable action steps that can reinforce how strong, brilliant and beautiful you are.

Just look at the week ahead of you: Plan a workout with a friend and create a healthy meal plan to nourish your body. Step by step, you’ll build a healthy lifestyle, and moments of clarity and opportunities for fun will follow. True progress happens when we enjoy making it happen and when we get out of our own way. By focusing on eating real and nutrient-dense food, and striving to build a healthy, active lifestyle, you’ll take the important first steps to being well and it will naturally become a lifestyle.

Crazy health idea that actually works: Biological ketosis using ketone esters (not keto acidosis, you maintain low glucose levels) and circadian IMF fasting; they both work well and can be used to help a client combat insulin resistance, lower elevated blood sugar and insulin and reset. I only occasionally incorporate these programs for red carpet deadlines and always closely monitor my clients. Ketosis, isn’t an excuse to eat cream cheese: For my clients we use high quality fats like MCT and algae oil and strategically eat greens to maintain fiber and phytonutrient levels. I created EIMF or evening intermittent fasting because front-loading calories and lighting up in the evening supports the circadian rhythm and cortisol curve instead of stressing the body. This also helps calm anxiety that comes with fasting and instead calms hunger hormones immediately. Dinner might be a simple dandelion tea blended with coconut oil or a late lunch and fasted dinner.

Remember, body composition goals are easily and naturally hit with blood-sugar balance, microbiome support and anti-inflammatory foods so it’s always better to go with a slow and natural change.

If I could give just one piece of health advice it would be... I try to instill balance in my clients by giving them light structure around what they should eat and breaking down their rigid food rules and cleansing habits.

Binging and cleansing cycles swing you back and forth like an out of control pendulum ball. Happiness and health are attained when you find balance. Balance isn’t when you stop moving and live a rigid, on-plan, perfect life; you are human, and none of us is perfect. When you are focused on a perfect food day you aren’t present, and most likely you are anxious, irritable and thinking about food all day. Instead focus on turning off hunger hormones and thoughts about food and know it be okay to swing a little from time to time. Balance is found with intentional movement to eat clean, sweat and even enjoy a glass of wine with friends. Accept who you are, love who you are and build a lifestyle focused on health, not some abstract idea of “perfection.”

My current mantra: Self love! When was the last time you looked in the mirror and reinforced the things you love about yourself? And not just your physical attributes, but all of the unique, beautiful pieces of your personality that make you you and no one else. The reasons you’re a good daughter, or why your friends think you’re funny, or why the barista at Starbucks thinks you’re endearing. True confidence emanates from within. Self-love, self-acceptance and positive reinforcement keep your spiritual soil fertile. That’s where positive body image grows from.
