Boho Heaven In Ojai: Reason Enough For A Road Trip

'Tis the season for road trips. And while Santa Barbara and Palm Springs both have their charms, for an absolute bohemian immersion experience, Ojai is the place to be. Creative locals Channon and Bianca Roe have just this year opened an Ojai shop filled with luxe essentials they themselves rely on, and, from the look of the shop, we love these people. Sticking true to their local roots and keeping things beyond well-styled, In The Field is a Chalkboard wonderland. Below, Bianca shares a few highlight from the shop's shelves and life tending to one of the town's sweetest new spots...

Herbal Remedies: Nettle Tea To Take The Sting Out Of Allergies

This triple -herb allergy tea from Free + Native Journal is proof of Lacy Phillips depth of knowledge when it comes to all things holistic.  Who knew nettles were anything more than an irritating plant to avoid on forest hikes? We've heard a few to many wellness pros' sing the praises of nettle tea not to pay attention! Check out more from Lacy below on just how effective these herbs can be in remedying allergy symptoms without the side effects of medication... It seems everywhere I turn this season there is a sniffle or a cry of how irritating one’s allergies are. Something as simple as hay fever can be enough to fully debilitate someone and have them wishing that they could replace their nose and itchy eyes with new ones. Two cups of this tea (recipe below) a day during high season will help to reduce - if not relieve - allergy symptoms. It is also incredibly convenient to pack a small jar of this herbal blend to take with you on your spring and summer travels. You never know what new climates and pollen can stir up by way of an allergy fit. Here are my favorite three herbal ingredients to create a super quick tea blend that will send allergies running for the hills. [olists num=1] [olists num=2]

Kitchen Chic: Make These Gluten-Free Vegan Almond Madeleines

Pinkies up. Claire Thomas' remix of these classic buttery French cookies are completely gluten-free, refined-sugar-free and vegan - and ready to dip straight into a little cold-brew coffee, if you ask us. We love Claire's idea to use the cookies as a base for delicate flavors like orange zest and vanilla... Food should be nourishing and delicious. It sounds simple, right? With sweets especially, it can be so hard to find treats that are as good to eat as they are for you. My friend Laurel, the baker behind the grain-free and refined-sugar-free (and sometimes vegan) goodness known as Sweet Laurel Bakery, has shared some of her simplest and most satisfying recipes with me. My favorite thing about her recipes is that they're always made with whole ingredients, no funny stuff or filler, so even the biggest sweet-tooth loves them. Tender, buttery madeleines are one of my favorite cookies to enjoy with tea, and these rich, almond-scented ones are a lovely twist on the classic. The texture is less cakey, and almond is truly the hero here, but it is the perfect base for adding some of your favorite flavors. Vanilla with a touch of cinnamon, maybe? Or cocoa with some orange zest? These little cookies can be adapted to whatever afternoon tea vibe you're after. Enjoy!

AMRAP, Pistol, Box Jump: The 10 Most Common Crossfit Terms Defined

Okay, so Crossfit pro Christmas Abbott sold us on giving this high-intensity workout a try, and we're checking out our very first box. But wait...what the heck is everyone saying? AMRAP? Wallball?!  Crossfit comes with its very own set of terminology, a lot of which might sound like gibberish to an outsider. Now that you're clear on fact vs. fiction and you're amped up to get started, get familiar with the Crossfit terms used during your WOD (...we'll get to that one later). Here's Christmas' breakdown on the ten most common Crossfit terms, what they mean, and how to put them to work:

Out Of The Box: Christmas Abbott Debunks The Top Crossfit Myths

Crossfit is one of those fitness formats we're in awe of, but in all honesty, have always been pretty intimidated by. We mean...look at those barbells! The combo of heavy weights, fast-paced moves, and the fact that the entire WOD (workout of the day) is but mere minutes yet leaves you drenched has left us watching in awe from the sidelines. Until we met Christmas Abbott, the celeb of the Crossfit world. She might only be 5'3", but Christmas is a larger-than-life force in the Crossfit world, a regular at the Reebok Crossfit Games, and author of The Badass Body Diet (which has got to be one of our favorite titles ever). We've been following Christmas on Instagram for Crossfit-spiration, and her fun (and yes, badass) pics finally convinced us to ask her to debunk the biggest Crossfit myths that hold people back. Her answers surprised us: "Adult recess?" We are SO in. Here's the truth about Crossfit - told by Christmas herself - plus her pro tips on how to take your first plunge into the "box"... HOW TO GET STARTED Preparation is key! Scout out the schedule and pick a time to commit to. Plan a comfortable outfit and bring a water bottle and a sweat towel. Be sure to fuel your body before! Grab a snack at least an hour before your workout - it will give you energy and make you feel better in the workout. Arrive early and with a positive attitude. The way you approach the workout will be instrumental to your success! Bring the positive out in full force here. WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A BOX Box hop to find the right box for you. This means try different boxes in your area, not all are created equal. Credentials are important so inquire about the staff. Community is equally important. If you want something fun and upbeat, find the box that embraces that style. Often we don't know until we experience it and that's okay. It doesn't have to be the most competitive box in the area - it has to be the best box for you. COMMON TERMINOLOGY There's a whole different vocabulary in CrossFit and to a newbie it can be confusing and overwhelming. Just like getting started with the workouts, you should keep it simple and start with the basics: squat, press, deadlift. Your coaches will fill you in as needed! That's part of what they do. Superfood Spotlight: Anandamide Bliss Alchemy

Anandamide is often called the "bliss molecule" and is present in abundance in - you guessed it - chocolate. The below chocolate power-food from Sun Potion is really something special. We get a lot of goodies delivered to our HQ - but when a box of Sun Potion's black and gold bottles arrive on our desks, we know we're in from an extra-special treat - and a little bit of education. We're obsessed with their "transformational" tonics and medicinal superfoods. Eager to expand our foodie vocab, we asked founders Scott and Nitsa to give us the scoop on their favorite products and ways to use them, from ashitaba  “beauty potion” to a He Shou Wu ganache. This month, they're breaking down the ins and outs of this cacao-based superfood designed to lift your mood to another level... WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: This is a blend of unsweetened, raw heirloom cacao, Sun Potion Tonic Herbs, superfoods, and spices - and it’s named after the cannabinoid neurotransmitter "anandamide.” This pleasure receptor in the brain is activated when you experience a blissful state - ananda. It is a compound produced naturally by humans and, as neuroscientist Daniel Piomelli discovered in 1996, cacao trees. The Sun Potion Anandamide “Bliss Alchemy” blend is hand-crafted in small batches using high-quality organic or wildcrafted ingredients and freshly-ground spices. The formula has been designed to activate and harmonize the nervous, digestive and immune systems and contains raw Arriba Nacional cacao, tocos, mucuna pruriens extract, reishi mushrooom, suma, maca, rose petals, ashwagandha extract, turmeric, cayenne, cardamom, cinnamon, black pepper, and Himalayan mineral salt. It is an alchemical treat to brighten the mind and open the heart. WHY YOU SHOULD TRY IT: Sun Potion uses an incredible source of raw Arriba Nacional cacao for the anandamide base. The cacao pods are shade grown on 30-60 year old trees in thriving jungle ecosystems in Ecuador, then harvested, fermented, and sun-dried with integrity. When chocolate is heated and processed it loses its active compounds and will not activate the brain in the same way - so it is important when consuming chocolate to choose a raw cacao with the medicinal “bliss-releasing” properties still intact. Current research is revealing that raw cacao may help with stress management, reducing anxiety, balancing depression, enhancing memory and brain function, increasing fertility, and finding a healthy weight balance. Indigenous cultures in South America have been using cacao in their spiritual ceremonies for millennia and it appears there is a reason why! If anything, this blend serves as an excellent alternative or complement to coffee, with the presence of the herbs as a balance to the energizing effects of the cacao. LET’S GET TOGETHER: Add a generous spoonful to water, tea, raw nut milk, potions, smoothies, elixirs, hot cocoa, coconut cream or creative brainstorms - and yes, to the occasional cold-pressed espresso indulgence too. In-joy!

How To Make Black Salve: A DIY Healing Balm With Activated Charcoal

Charcoal is having a moment, for sure. We love the crazy Japanese charcoal toothbrushes and we've been drinking charcoal in Pressed Juicery's new green juice. We're no strangers to drinking or bathing in clay either, which can draw toxins out of the gut. Stephanie at Hello Natural is walking us through a DIY for a traditional skin-healing remedy called black salve. It's strangely gorgeous and surprisingly effective... Every summer my dad would bring out the activated charcoal when anyone got a mosquito bite or the occasional bee sting. He would make a paste with activated charcoal and baking soda (just add a little water) and apply it to the skin. It makes a major mess so we walked around with a paper towel bandage for hours. I was always skeptical of dad’s natural remedies, but this one worked! So I’m glad that activated charcoal is popular again – and this salve works just as well at drawing out stings, itches and splinters. At first glance, this recipe seems to have an intimidating number of unusual ingredients. Charcoal? Clay? Infused oil? But if you’re interested in building a natural remedy kit these are all good ingredients to have on hand. [olists num=1] [olists num=2]

The New Eggs Benedict: All Our Breakfast Dreams Have Come True

We love Eggs Benedict. We love hollandaise sauce. And we want them all. the. time. We're all about balance here at The Chalkboard, but sometimes we find ourselves wishing there was a way to indulge in this fan favorite every morning without, you know, consuming a full day's worth of butter in the process. Having worked with the one and only Jamie Oliver on food styling, Anna Jones knows a thing or two about changing around unhealthy habits for the better (haven't heard of Jamie's Food Revolution? Read more from back when he was TCM Guest Editor). This writer and cook has officially answered all our breakfast prayers with this recipe for what she calls "The New Eggs Benedict," from her cookbook A Modern Way to Eat. A Modern Way To Eat is filled with vegetarian recipes for how we want to eat in today's world - healthy, satisfying, and accessible with the slightest edge of coolness. A great example? The hollandaise sauce in this recipe has two secret, too-good-to-be-true ingredients: cashews and avocados. Pinch us, we think we're dreaming. I’m not sure I know anyone who doesn’t like Eggs Benedict in all its rich hollandaise glory. This is how I make mine. Roasted slices of sweet potato step in for English muffins, and avocado and cashews blend up creamily in seconds with a bit of tarragon to make a killer super-light hollandaise, creamy but not too rich. The caramelized onions and spinach sandwich it all together. I like to make my hollandaise this way, as I find a butter-laden sauce too much of a treat with which to start the day (delicious though it is). To get a creamy sauce I soak my cashew nuts in water overnight, but, if you forget, half an hour’s soaking will do. For this recipe, you need to get your hands on large sweet potatoes so that they are wide enough to sit the poached egg on top. Other ways to use your healthy hollandaise sauce: Spooned over grilled asparagus, on top of a green spring risotto, next to a simple poached egg on toast, or in sandwiches in place of mayonnaise!

Check Your Posture: 5 Unexpected Ways To Beat Fatigue + Boost Energy

If you feel like you're always tired - no matter how much sleep you think you're getting - grab (another) coffee and join the club. Way too many of us are walking around weary-eyed, yet simply accept it as a part of how things are in today's society. With so many obligations and to-dos, not to mention personal ambitions and professional aspirations, being tired 24/7 is "just how life is." And we're calling B.S. Dr. Holly Phillips is adamant that living a modern life - having a demanding job and/or family, a social life, and a whole slew of responsibilities and activities - does not mean we have to accept fatigue as our ever-constant reality. In her new book, The Exhaustion Breakthrough, Dr. Holly helps readers not only understand the root causes of their exhaustion, but take control and find solutions that last. We're not kidding when we say that this book is a life changer (it changed ours!). From the way you stand all the way down to the color of your surroundings, here's Dr. Holly on five unexpected ways to get your energy back and wake up for good - caffeination not necessary. Do you know a woman who doesn’t at least occasionally complain about being tired? I don’t. That’s true in my medical practice, and it’s true in my personal life, too. We’re so accustomed to this shared weariness that we dismiss it like a run-of-the-mill windy day. Many of us see women’s exhaustion as so common, perhaps even unavoidable, that we figure it’s not worth talking about. My feeling is, it shouldn’t be that way and it doesn’t have to be that way, as my new book The Exhaustion Breakthrough will show you. I wrote the book as a guide to help women get to the bottom of their energy crisis and offer strategies for taking long-term steps to reverse it. That said, every little improvement counts, and the more proactive you can be about kicking up your energy, the more empowered you’re likely to feel. Here are 5 tried-and-true ways to pump up your energy when you need a boost most. [olists num=1]

When Tuesday Is A Monday: 7 Lazy Lunch Ideas We Love

There are days for elaborate bento box lunches, afternoons for pulling off that 'ladies-who-lunch' vibe...and then there are mornings like this one. Avocado toast all the way! Instagrammer Liz Moody of NotCrazyHealthy has lunch ideas for days, and some of them are what she calls "lazy lunches." We're into it. Liz is on the same wavelength as our team when it comes to non-recipe recipes. We're loving these seven ideas for lunches that can be made in a jiff, but are healthy as can be. Let us know what some of your go-to "lazy lunches" are in the comments. Beyond Liz's list, we love constructing open-faced sandwiches, throwing layers of healthy crunchies and fruits we have lying around on to our favorite coconut yogurt, and putting all the greens we can find into a blender with a bottle of Almond Milk. Being a food blogger is a lot of fun, but some days, you're just not in the mood for perfectly plated food with a lengthy list of ingredients - you just want to eat something simple and tasty and move on! This is why I’m a big fan of the lazy lunch: meals that come together quickly and easily, with ingredients you likely already have in your pantry - and they all still taste amazing.

Take It Outside: A 3-Step Routine To Amp Up Your Run

The long weekend means that most of us are either (a) foregoing the gym for some Memorial Day fun, or (b) cursing the gym for closing early in lieu of some Memorial Day fun! Whichever camp you fall into, there's no reason you can't fit a killer workout in wherever you are, whenever you want. Lifestyle blogger Lauren Gores led us through this outdoor workout that not only involves no equipment whatsoever, it's made up of only three moves total. Perform this sequence three times with 30 seconds of rest in between, and you're done in as much time as it takes to fire up the BBQ... Springtime pushes me to get outdoors more often - the air feels new and the grass seems grateful for more company. Mere minutes spent outdoors, whether in the middle of a busy week or lazy Sunday, always boosts my mood and mentality. When the weather is this good, I push myself to squeeze in more outdoor workouts. My trainer, Mike Alexander, created this park fitness plan for spring - perfect for Memorial Day and all the outdoor celebrations that happen over the long weekend. Superfood Spotlight: Lemongrass

What you need to know: A staple ingredient of Asian fare, lemongrass is far more than just a subtle citrus flavor that's added to soups, curries, and teas. Lemongrass is a widely used medicinal herb, known for its antifungal, antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. It is a tall, perennial grass, which is native to the tropical regions of Asia as well as India, and which is also utilized as a natural pesticide and preservative. Lemongrass contains a wide range of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that are thought to relieve pain, reduce a fever, stimulate the uterus and menstrual flow, lower cholesterol and fight nasal congestion. Why you should try it: Lemongrass gains its medicinal properties from a compound called citronella oil. Citronella oil is popularly used in aromatherapy, and is said to help treat and prevent colds, fevers, and headaches, and to offer muscular-pain relief as well. In addition, it may improve mood disorders such as anxiety, and ease menstrual cramps. Citronella has also shown to suppress the growth of fungi species, such as aspergillus, eurotium and penicillium, helping to prevent infection in the colon, urethra, bladder, gastrointestinal tract, prostate and kidneys. Let's get together: Lemongrass is one of our favorite additions to healing soups, especially our Tom Kha made with fresh-pressed green juice. To use, slice off the bottom of the stalk, and peel off the outside drier layers. Then, with a large, wide knife or rolling pin, smash the stalk to soften. It is now ready to prepare for cooking. Another way to enjoy its benefits is by juicing. Lemongrass offers an extra dimension of flavor to juice, especially when paired with dark leafy greens and tropical fruits. Finally, if you're looking to maximize its therapeutic value, grab a bottle of citronella oil and add it to your favorite essential oil diffuser, like this ultrasonic version from Quooz. Get the green tom kha recipe soup infused with plenty of lemongrass here!

LA's got some pretty sweet eats, but when it comes to chowing down on the latest and greatest foodie finds, NYC's got it going on. Eater Drinks editor and top foodie Kat Odell is our go-to gal when it comes to taking a bite out of The Big Apple - especially since things like cauliflower "steaks" and purple potato doughnuts have our mouths watering all the way on the opposite coast. Each month, we’ve enlisted Kat to scope out the most mind-blowing small bites from around the city (think goat milk coffee and seed crackers with squash tahini spread)...selfishly, of course, so we can live vicariously bite by bite. This month, it's all about the matcha. Chalait is one of Kat's favorite midday pit stops, and after hearing about this dreamy green find, we can understand why! Get all the deets below, and be sure to steal her pro tip on your next visit to the West Village....

Trust Your Gut: Why Improving Your Digestion Means Better Immunity

The root of almost all chronic diseases starts in your gut. Most of the diseases” being diagnosed in epidemic proportions—such as heart disease, cancer, autoimmune diseases, insomnia, depression, asthma, diabetes, and arthritis— can all be traced back to your injured and irritated gut.

– Alejandro Junger, M.D.

Digestion might not be water cooler fodder in your office, but in Chalkboard land, it's another story. We're always talking detox, cleansing, fermented foods, colonics and other gut-related topics. And honestly, we're hoping others catch on soon: our digestive systems are directly connected to our immune systems and can be either our greatest ally or our worst enemy when it comes to cancer prevention. Holistic health pro Elissa Goodman digs into the ins and outs of keeping your gut in tip-top shape for the long haul... A lifetime of poor eating, stress and environmental toxins has thrown our guts off balance. Our diet lacks beneficial bacteria that our guts needs. The “bad” bacteria is winning the fight and most of us aren’t doing what it takes to strengthen our “good” bacteria. This is so important, because we have 10x more bacteria than human cells in our body. Our constant exposure to stress, illness, inflammation, antibiotics and the American diet taxes our guts. While your gut is responsible for breaking down food and absorbing nutrients, it’s also the home to 70-80% of your immune system. Without a healthy gut, you can be exposed to bacterial infections, viruses and cancers.

A Celebrity Chef’s Most Requested Recipe: Gluten-Free Veggie Fritters

Mikaela Reuben is a private chef for umpteen actors whose names you'd recognize and apparently they all have one thing in common: cravings for these veggie fritters. Mikaela says, "Because these vegetable-dense morsels of goodness are easy to eat on movie sets, yam and zucchini fritters have become a favorite for some of my actor clients. They are a great way to satisfy a snack craving, and they make a wonderful addition to a breakfast with eggs, as a topping on a lunch salad, or as a part of dinner! Yams are rich in fiber and vitamin A, and taste amazing served in this smoky fritter form." We are loving this recipe - and the woman who whipped it up is pretty swell too! Hidden Agenda: What Happens When Generosity Comes With Rules

Giving gifts to others is a way to show them that you care...but they can also be a sign of something else. Relationship expert Ellie Burrows calls out the sometimes-hidden agenda behind the art of generosity - and the kinds of gifts that are of true value. File me under “giver.” I get high off of generosity. You name it, I love to give it: time, thoughts, money and presents. Especially presents. Historically, I have been very proud of this aspect of my personality. It feels good to give. Ask any of my friends and lovers and they will tell you that generosity is one of my core values. It’s as obvious as my green eyes and brown hair. Someone who is generous of spirit is lauded, and rightfully so. There is so much need in this world; those who can give, absolutely should. But for the first time in my life, I see a major problem with how this particular attribute shows up in my life. And I’m feeling an enormous amount of relief around this discovery. I send people flowers on their birthdays (also sometimes Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day and anniversaries). New apartment? Flowers. New job? Flowers. New baby? Flowers. New tooth? Flowers. Totally kidding on the last one, but maybe if it was “real” surgery like wisdom teeth extraction or something that involved stitches, I’m sure you can guess... flowers. While one could argue that the above paragraph sounds like a classic compulsion case, that’s not what is really going on. There’s something much more fascinating at play: There is serious rigidity in my generosity. Rigidity. Generosity. Those words feel almost oxymoronic, don’t they? Somehow through the lens of rigidity, my beloved attribute of generosity all of sudden feels a bit icky, maybe even trite. Every month on The Chalkboard, I post something and call someone out on his or her choices in relationships and love. This month, I’m calling myself out. So here are my cards. These are the contributing factors that lead me to be to be stringent in giving stems. “That’s how I was raised.” (#nurture) That’s the sentence equivalent of a closed door. Think: non-starter, not up for discussion, that’s just the way it is. Inquiry and curiosity need not apply. But I love questions, so I’m going to open that door and walk through it. For better or worse, I grew up in a house where I learned that giving was how one demonstrated love. That deserves further exploration – but not here. Probably best for a small room with a couch and trusted professional. I’m dealing with the need to be liked. (#anxiety) Aren’t we all? Isn’t that why social media is so tremendously successful? We want to be seen. We want to be cherished. But in the case of my flowers, it’s less about approval and more about appreciation. I appreciate someone with flowers and in turn he or she will appreciate me for being thoughtful. Therefore he or she likes me and considers me a good friend. A two-birds one-stone gift - like when a lover gets you lingerie - everyone wins. Friends might not know how much I love them if they don’t have a physical symbol to remind them. (#insecurity, also #projection) Real friendship is rooted in love, which is eternal and intangible. It can’t be made tangible by a bunch of colorful and nice-smelling cells with an infinitely short lifespan. Mic drop. See, it could be argued that I send flowers from fear, not from love. When it comes to interacting with our beloveds, I'm sure we can all relate to a version of these limitations: nurture, anxiety, insecurity and projection. I read The Five Love Languages more than a decade ago. The premise of the book is about learning how you love and how your beloved loves back. Basically you have your own love language, your partner has his or her own love language, and fluency in both is ideal for a harmonious relationship. I liked to be loved through “Words of Affirmation,” and also “Physical Touch.” But I like to love people in my life as if their preference is “Receiving Gifts.” Ridiculous. Who am I to assume everyone wants to be loved in that way? (FYI, the other two languages are “Quality Time” and “Acts of Service.” It’s a great book. Consider reading it. And while we’re on the topic, maybe don’t read it. It’s up to you to decide how you want to love and be loved, free from categorization.) I vehemently believe that life is a dance amidst polarities - light and dark, pleasure and pain, and of course, fear and love. I write about this a lot. Where we fall between extremes tell us a lot about who we are and how we are occurring in our worlds. I'd like to draw your attention to a nugget of wisdom that’s been helpful for me and maybe you will also find it useful. Although I’m not a practitioner, it comes from the Kabbalistic tradition and I think it’s kind of beautiful. On the Tree of Life, kindness is opposite judgment. Although I usually loathe the latter word, in this particular context I like it. This judgment is about boundaries – about ensuring a push/pull in all that we do. If we give without awareness, without clear intentions, without discernment, without boundaries, then we can lose ourselves in our giving. So when it comes generosity, I’m still learning to dance. This week it was a friend’s birthday. A confluence of things like forgetfulness and commitments (also known as being human) lead to the inability to get flowers to her doorstep on her big day. Initially, I was hit with a kind of weight that felt like guilt, but it quickly passed. And then I felt something else. I felt empowered. Empowerment that can only come from a lesson learned. I picked up the phone and I was present, simply wished her a happy birthday and told her I loved her. That kind of love, the real stuff, doesn’t wilt and die so easily.

Just DIY It: Summer-Ready Succulent Boxes

We're ready to get outside. And stay there. Here's a tip: gather a few friends for a fun afternoon that secretly has them redesigning your outdoor space! Feed them some of these jalapeno cocktails and they'll never be the wiser.  This succulent wall DIY comes from Cherie Marquez of La Fleur Kitchen. She recently hosted a workshop at Communal LA and we're picking up her tips to share with you. Check out more Communal workshops here and then get that garden growing!  Living walls help to produce more oxygen in your space just like any other plant but also naturally removes the toxins in the air we breathe. Its also a great focal point and quite the conversation starter while entertaining guests in your home or having clients come to your business. Living walls are fairly easy to create once you have all the materials, all it requires is patience. To create your living garden, start off small and work your way up to a bigger piece... Step 1: Create your box The most common way for beginners is to build their own out of an old vintage wooden frame. With unused wood from your home or from your local reclaimed lumber yard, use scraps to build out from the back of your frame to create a shadow box effect about 2" - 3" deep. Do not fasten to the frame just yet. Cut a piece of chicken wire and weed guard (found at your local gardening and hardware store lightly bigger than the opening of your shadow box and staple that between your frame and shadow box. Fill with 2 parts cactus mix and 1 part potting soil. Now attach the shadow box to the frame. Now close the back of your shadow box with a thin piece of plywood. Here are the layers of your box: Layer 1: vintage frame Layer 2: chicken wire Layer 3:  weed guard Layer 4: 2" - 3" shadow box (filled with soil) Layer 5: back cover Step 2: Flip Your Frame Flip your frame so that the shadow box is down and you're looking at your frame. Now you're ready to design your living art piece. With aquarium tweezers (found at your local pet store), punch holes in the weed guard to make an opening for your succulent cuttings. Place them throughout, creating the design you want. Keep in mind they will grow, so leave some space in between. Once you have all your succulent cuttings in place, you can surround them with moss. This will also help keep the moisture in since you won't be watering them very often. Step 3: LAY IT FLAT Let the roots take in! Lay it flat for a few weeks, depending on the size and the cuttings. Water it with a garden hose on the mist setting, 1 - 2 times a week in the beginning. Laying it flat for 2-4 weeks is ideal. You can slowly start to train it to go vertical by propping it up at an angle slowly each week. Once the roots have taken and your living wall is ready to go vertical, you are ready to hang it. Step 4: Show it off Invite some friends over for a little get-together and I bet someone notices your beautiful living art piece. Additional tips: - Water on mist control. On hotter days during the summer, if you feel it needs a bit more watering then do so, just don't over-water. - Be creative and explore other options on your next living-wall base, there are often many different ways. - Experiment with various plants too, just keep in mind where you want your piece to end up, whether that’s inside or outside, direct sun, partial sun or shade. The options are endless.

Superfood Spotlight: He Shou Wu

You can't have "superfoods" without the word "super." We're constantly oohing and ahhing over the nutritional powerhouses that come across our desks - and recently, the most super of them all have been the black and gold bottles from Sun Potion filled with what they call ”transformational foods.” These supercharged superfoods boast ingredients like tonic herbs, mushrooms, medicinal plants...the list goes on! Last month, brand founders Scott and Nitsa gave us the scoop on ashitaba (plus a cinnamony "beauty potion" we've been whipping up in lieu of our normal lattes!). This month, we're learning about the three little words that make a huge difference in the way your body functions: He Shou Wu. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW: He Shou Wu has a rich history of use as an anti-aging, blood-building, beauty and rejuvenation food. The prepared extract of the tuber (polygonum multiflorum) is considered a tonic for the blood, hair, skin, nervous system, sexual center and spirit. He Shou Wu may support healthy immune function, energy levels and graceful aging. WHY YOU SHOULD TRY IT: This plant is deeply nourishing and rejuvenative. He Shou Wu is considered a kidney jing tonic - kidneys being the battery packs of the body and jing being the primary essence in Oriental medicine. For the modern lifestyle (especially those of us who live in an urban environment or work in the digital world!) our jing is often depleted and this herb helps to replenish it by tonifying the kidneys and liver and strengthening their cleansing action. On an external level, the root extract is reputed to strengthen the nails and restore natural hair color; He Shou Wu translates literally as "Mr. He's Black Hair." He Shou Wu is an excellent source of iron and zinc and is believed to raise the SOD (super oxide dismutase) levels in the body, which assist in clearing free radicals from the system. LET'S GET TOGETHER: The simplest way to take He Shou Wu is to place half a teaspoon in a glass of warm water or tea. As with all the tonic herbs, it is most effective if consumed in small, regular doses over a lifetime. For daily use, it is important to use a prepared, powdered extract of the herb from a source that is organically grown - or even better - harvested in the wild without exposure to contaminants. He Shou Wu makes an excellent addition to teas, elixirs smoothies, nut milk potions, raw chocolate (like the ganache recipe below) - even coffee!

Bowl + Spoon: The Sprouted Kitchen’s Quinoa Salad Recipe

They're not just for soup anymore: there's something about eating from a bowl that makes any meal more fun. From smoothies to soba noodles, we feel like a kid every time we ditch plates and cups and go for the bowls (maybe it's the idea that we can throw pretty much anything together, tack "bowl" onto the title, and deem it a culinary masterpiece). The Sprouted Kitchen, the food blog we love to stalk on Instagram and beyond, has taken our bowl obsession to another level with their new cookbook, The Sprouted Kitchen Bowl and Spoon - a collection of simple, healthy meals the way we all love to eat them: in a bowl. Invite a couple of friends over to the house for a pre-summer gathering and whip up this well-balanced, nutrient-dense quinoa bowl recipe for the crowd. No plates allowed. In the summer, I try not to spend as much time in the kitchen prepping; I lean toward meals that are quick and light. The goal is to make a few things in bulk that will keep for a few days and that I can throw together for easy meals. This salad packs up well for beach days or picnics, and is just as great with a couple of fried eggs on top for brunch. The simplicity beckons you to use fresh summer corn and tomatoes. While it’s a simple crowd-pleasing (vegetarian, gluten-free) dish for dinner al fresco with friends, the fact that both the quinoa and kale can hold up dressed for a few days make it a lovely dish to keep on hand for quick meals. I use a 1 to 1.5 ratio of quinoa to water here because I like it on the al dente side for salads. This leaves you with individual grains as opposed to mush. If you find yours in need of a bit more liquid, just add a couple more tablespoons. I bake the tomatoes to hover somewhere between oven-dried and fresh. I like the bits of juice and also the concentrated sweetness that the oven imparts to these summer gems. Leave them raw if you’re in a hurry, but baked, they make the salad special if you have the time.

Camille Styles’ 20 Party-Ready Pantry Staples for the Avid Hostess

It's Friday afternoon, and you just decided you're in a hostess-y mood. And so you invite a group of besties over for happy hour and dinner at your place...then panic getting your grocery list together. Entertaining should be fun and easy, allowing you to focus on great conversation and belly laughs. For the avid hostess who never passes up an opportunity to entertain guests, lifestyle blogger and party stylist Camille Styles is about to change your life. To avoid the afternoon grocery rush and kitchen frenzy, we've asked Camille for her top pantry staples to have on hand for a party waiting to happen. Grab a copy of her new book, Camille Styles Entertaining, that's filled with ideas for stylish, carefree gatherings for any occasion - then get your pantry ready to party! My favorite kind of entertaining is the laid-back, no-fuss variety - inviting a few friends over for dinner, opening a bottle of wine while I put together a few simple but delicious dishes, and sitting down to enjoy the meal with my friends, feeling neither worn out nor frazzled. Creating such an easygoing atmosphere is the direct result of preparation on the front end, and the extra effort to get organized pays dividends come party time. One of the greatest tools a prepared hostess can have in her arsenal is a well-stocked pantry. It gives me peace of mind to know that if last-minute guests stop by for drinks or even dinner, I can rustle up something scrumptious. And if the idea of hosting a dinner party after a demanding workday makes you break out in hives, just imagine that your kitchen is so well stocked that all you need from the grocery store on the way home is a few salmon fillets and veggies for a salad. So what are the items I reach for constantly, the ones I could never live without in my kitchen? Garlic, olive oil, herbes de Provence - they’re standbys that I reach for on an almost-daily basis and that never let me down. But there’s also a new guard rising up in my kitchen, ingredients like Maldon sea salt and fish sauce that are fairly recent yet equally essential additions to my pantry shelves. Here are a handful of the items that are fundamental to my cooking, both for multi-course dinner parties and weeknight family meals.
